ASSIGNMENT ON DEVELOPING A BROCHURE
Submitted to-Dr. Kirti By- Devika Atree Roll no.-SMBA11040 Section-B
Q1. Identify how assumptions caused problems in this case?
A1. The first assumption that Finley did was being depended on external advertisement agency. There was no synchronization between him and the advertisement company. In the end of case study its mentioned that Finley cannot understand why he did not get what he wanted the first time because thats their business and they should know how to do it.
This statement\assumption of his show the complete dependency on external advertisement firm. When the first time Finley called the advertisement firm they send him a representative. Now this representative was new on job and asked him some questions about his project, which were what they were involved in, where they were located and their surroundings. Finley assumed that these entire questions would suffice the need and would be enough for creating a brochure. But there are lot more things an advertisement company should know kind of branding, product positioning, target market, competitive design of logo etc.
Response delay and inconsistency in the work frustrated Finley. The representative assured him that he would return in one week of time with ad idea but he didnt. Here the assumption of Finley caused lots of problem and waste of time.
Finley in the next meeting with the representative mentioned that he wanted a brochure and logo that use soft sell to introduce his idea to toplevel executive as an investment. Which Finley assumed that would be known by the Advertisement Company.
Q2. What actions would you recommend to the advertising representative to ensure this does not happen again?
A2. There were some areas and juncture when advertisement representative was at fault.
a) Being the ad representative committed to come back in one week of time, which he didnt. My recommendation is one should be always on time even the work is not completed. As in Finleys case, time was money to him. Him getting agitated on the delay of work time was expected.
b)The representative should have gained all the information like kind of branding, product positioning, target market, competition design of logo and objective of the firm value proposition Finley wants to sell. Only after that he should have start working on ad idea. It was obvious that the desired outcome will not be possible as the transfer of information between the ad representative and Finley was incomplete.
c) Should have taken a regular follow up with Finley. Cause regular follow up would have improved the synchronization level. It was ad representatives responsibility to stay in touch with Finley and give him regular development report so as to know if there was something that Finley wanted to add to the advertisement or remove certain elements. Clearly there was a breach in communication between the two.
d) Would be the representative turned up with only one idea or tag line BEAT THE HOTEL GAME WITH THE SUIT THING. He should have turned up with some more ideas. There might have been a
perspective on the representatives part that what me made would get sanctioned by Finley. The representative being new to the job should have shown his utmost capability and talent to gain his clients confidence but on the contrary there was just one proposal by the representative and that too got rejected. Though later, after knowing what exactly Finley wanted the representative came up with another ad which was liked by Finley but not totally.
