SAMAL YOUTH LEADERS


Empowering the youth as future leaders has been one of the main thrusts of the local government of Samal, one of the few towns in Bataan that provide leadership training opportunities to the youth in Bataan.
With the passionate leadership of Mayor Gene Malibiran of the said town, a Leadership training Seminar for Samal Youth Leaders was conducted last March 10, 2012 at the Fort Morong Resort in Morong Bataan. At least 100 SK leaders, out-of-school youth leaders, and other youth leaders in the municipality were chosen to partake in the one-of-a-kind leadership development program which was organized under the Youth Development Program of the municipality. Mr. Nomer N. Varua, a former student leader and now an instructor in BPSU, together with Mr. Aaron Rondilla, also a former student leader and currently an instructor in Bagac Campus and the CSC Balanga Campus officers, served as lecturers and facilitators. Youth leaders were given informative and interactive discussion on the principles of leadership and teamwork and to cap the entire leadership program, extreme teambuilding activities were conducted during the afternoon. In the processing of learnings session, the youth leaders had rekindle their commitment to dedicate their time in helping build Samal in particular and the country in general.

Mr. Tyron dela Rosa leads the conduct of Basic Emergency Response and Disaster Triage Training at the BJMP Bataan District Jail. The program aims to train inmates who are prepared to face disasters and natural calamities.

The OES Dinalupihan facilitated the registration of children to the municipal civil registrar last January 11, 2012. But prior to the registration, officers from the Office of the Municipal Civil Registrar will first conduct an orientation for the residents of the said barangay.

SERIES OF REMEDIAL READING PROGRAMS CONDUCTED IN ORANI


To address the recurring reading problems among elementary schoolchildren in Alikabok Elementary School, Orani, Bataan, a remedial reading program which benefitted thirty-five Grade III pupils was conducted in the said school on February 10, 2012. The project was led by Dr. Felicisima V. Tungol and assisted by Third Year Bachelor in Elementary Education students, which was headed by Ms. Lenie Grace de Jesus. Mr. Mario Victoria, the newly-installed school principal facilitated the smooth conduct of the program. Apparently, the schoolchildren who experienced the remedial program provided a very positive reception that the group of extensionist intend to expand its remedial reading program from kindergarten to grade VI. Parents were present in the said program to get involved in the remediation program. The February 10 remedial reading program was followed by another program on February 17 in the same school, covering Fourth Graders during this time. On March 2, 2012, Grade One pupils were targeted to benefit from the said intervention program. The same team of student volunteers from the BEED III of the said campus participated in the conduct of the successful program. On March 13, 2012, the said project team conducted the same remedial reading program in Paraiso Elementary School in the same town. Selected 35 pupils in the grade three level were chosen to benefit for the said program, mostly preidentified as slow readers for them to maximize the benefits of the remediation program Remedial reading programs are used to help students who are not reading on grade level. They are designed to assist students having learning difficulties and/or who have missed key components of reading instruction. They are geared more for students who are considerably behind their peers than those who are only slightly behind their peers.

STRESS MANAGEMENT SEMINAR FOR PARENTS IN ORANI


In a world where stressors has fast becoming the sources of minor and even major illnesses, the BPSU Orani Campus conducted a Stress Management Seminar on March 12, 2012 for parents of children in Alikabok Elementary School, Orani, Bataan. It was the second time that Orani Campus sponsored a stress management program for the said barangay. Ms. Khristina Ann Dimarucut, a psychology instructor in Orani Campus, served as the resource speaker in the seminar attended by 38 individuals, mostly parents of schoolchildren in Alikabok. Ms. Dimarucut was assisted by third year BEED students. There were sharing of parents experiences related to stresses during the open forum conducted to culminate the half-day activity. Gifts in the form of school supplies and reading materials were given away to the participants. The said program was proposed by Engr. Yoland Simbul, the campus Dean of Instruction.

BPSU OES, CHR SPONSORS CAPACITY ENHANCEMENT TRAINING PROGRAM FOR BARANGAY KATARUNGAN

For the first time in the extension programs of the university, a professional development training program was conducted last May 9, 2012 for the benefit of the officials and members of Katarungang Pambarangay in the town of Orani, San Simon, Dinalupihan and Barangay Bliss from Balanga City.
The project targeted only the adopted barangays of the university as only a few can be accommodated in the venue. Mr. Reynaldo Francisco, a retired DILG official served as the resource speaker in the said training program which was held at the BPSU Orani Hostel. The goal of the training is familiarization and enhancement of knowledge of the rules, principles and procedures guiding the Lupong Tagapamayapa of each barangay. Specifically, the project aimed to train the members of katarungang pambarangay in the basics of the Philippine justice system; understand the Legal, Philosophical and Organization Aspects of the katarungang pambarangay; discuss the various best practices on Lupon Administration; discuss the basics of Jurisdiction and Venue, Cases

BJMP Disaster Triage from page 1


The BPSU-BJMP partnership has continued to prosper as the Phase 3 of the Disaster Triage and Basic Emergency Response Training Program is currently being held at the Bataan District Jail. The training was opened last January 31, 2012 and will go through until February. Thirty (30) female participants from the jails female dormitory are currently under the training program. The trainees for this program will also participate in a skills Olympic designed to test their knowledge on disaster and basic emergency response. The program, which is under the tutelage of Mr. Tyron dela Rosa, was began inside the jail since August 2011. The BJMP authorities in the province has been a great working partner with the university.

PMMA BENCHMARK BPSU EXTENSION PROJECTS


Extension staff and officials from the Philippine Merchant Marine Academy (PMMA) in Zambales visited the University Office of Extension Services last April 19 to benchmark extension projects conducted by BPSU. Mr. Arnold L. Pasamba, the Extension Director of PMMA consulted Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson on the recent extension projects of the university. Strategies on linkaging with various organizations and local government units. Dr. Joson showcased the university extension projects over the past five years, focusing on the four thrusts of extension: agriculture and natural resources, engineering and technology, social and behavioural sciences, and health and related sciences. Mr. Pasamba commended the universitys extension programs for it comprehensiveness and strategies implemented.

In its continued pursuit to propagate the vision and mission of the Gig and the Amamzing sampaguita Foundation, Inc (GASFI), another book donation activity was conducted by the GASFI-BPSU Unit last March 27, 2012 at Bani Elementary School in Balanga City. Five boxes of reading materials were turned over to the school principal Mr. Ramil Cobales. Staff from the University Library Information Services (LIS) in the person of Mrs. Francisca Llamzon. Mrs. Josephine Tanciongco, and Ms. Marissa Dulce Cruz were present during the event. They provided insights to the school teachers on how to organize and store the books properly. A mini-program with lectures on the importance of reading was conducted through the discussions led by Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson and Mr. Nomer N. Varua.

STRESS MANAGEMENT SEMINAR FOR BPSU ORANI CAMPUS TEACHING AND NON-TEACHING PERSONNEL
The BPSU Orani Campus commenced the Academic Year 2012-2013 with a stress management seminar for both teaching and non-teaching personnel held last June 6, 2012 at the BPSU Orani Campus Hostel. The physical and psychological enhancement seminar was intended to arm the participants with identifying the potential sources of stress and how to manage, control, or prevent them. Campus Psychology instructor Ms. Khristina Ann Dimarucut served as the lecturer covering the topics Eustress, distress, and Stress. The talk was followed by an informative discussion of Mrs. Digna de Guzman who discussed the causes of stress and how to transform a negative stress into a positive one. Campus Director Rudy Flores, Technical Coordinator Mrs. Caridad S. Villafuerte, and Extension Services Coordinator Mrs. Elizabeth L. Medairos and Campus Chairman for Extension Dr. Felicisima V. Tungol were present to grace the event.

LOW-COST BUT NUTRITIOUS FOODS TAUGHT TO PARENTS


BS Hotel and Restaurant management students were able to come up with recipes that are low in budget but high in nutrition. These kinds of recipes are important in todays world where family budgets for food are getting tighter and tighter every year. With their new invention in the classroom, Mrs. Bernadeth B. Gabor thought of disseminating her students discoveries to parents and come up with a community program that provides free training to parents to prepare such recipes. On March 23, the program came into realization. More than 30 parents from Balanga City attended the cooking demo program where they learned how to come up with classy meals from cheap ingredients. The project was sponsored by the College of Arts and Sciences THRM Department.

Provincial Council on Disability Affairs, BPSU partners for team-building project


The Provincial Council on Disability Affairs (PCDA) tapped the services of the university in conducting a team-building seminar for the employees and staff of the said office under the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). The event was held at La Vista Inland Resort, City of Balanga, Bataan last March 13, 2012. Dr. Perla B. Estrella and Dr. Elizabeth Joson served as the resource speakers in the said capacity-building activity. Dr. Estrella discussed the psychological and social dimensions of groups and working with groups. This provided a clearer view among the participants on how groups can work together successfully as one directed toward a unified goal of empowering the differently-abled in the province. Dr. Joson, on the other hand discussed effective collaboration with teams to facilitate success in the targets of an organization. The University and PSWDO have been working together for years in various areas of social concerns.

Provincial Council on Children, BPSU team up to build teamwork, friendship


After the successful conduct of team-building activities for officers under the Provincial Council on Disability Affairs (PCDA), another identical program was conducted last March 23, 2012 at the Sinagtala Resort, Orani, Bataan, this time, for the officials and employees of the Provincial Council for the Protection of Children, which is also under the umbrella of the multiawarded social services arm of Bataan, the Provincial Social Welfare and Development Office (PSWDO). The team-up of Dr. Perla B. Estrella, Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson and Ms. Lady Fatima Dianco discussed the principles and concepts of leadership and teamwork, the dynamics that make it successful, and the steps to take to achieve a collective goal as one organization. Mrs. Marilyn Tigas, PSWDO Head Officer and adviser of the PCDA and PCPC, was grateful for the contribution of the university in the undertakings of the PSWDO.

Samal health workers receives therapeutic massage training


Seventy-five (75) Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) of Samal town were trained on Basic Therapeutic Massage in a collaborative project between the University and the Local Government of Samal. The training, which was conducted last March 21, 2012 at Casa Generosa, Samal, Bataan, was facilitated by Ms. Leslie Jorge, an instructor in the BPSU College of Arts and Sciences and a certified masseur. All participants were trained for eight hours and were given the chance to practice their newly-acquired skills through the resident-volunteers who received free massage that day. The university and the LGU of Samal have been closely collaborating in various social projects benefitting mostly the youth, senior citizens, women and those in the agriculture and fisheries sector.

Dinalupihan Elem receives intensive reaing program

The English Language and Literature Advocates (ELLA), the campus association of Bachelor in Secondary Education major in English students, together with its faculty adviser Mrs. Loida Garcia, sponsored an English Remedial Teaching and Read-a-Thon Tutorial Lessons for the school children of Santo Nino Elementary School. The program commenced last August 31, 2011 and was closed out on March 2, 2012. The sevenmonth program had a two-fold purpose which was to pupils in the depressed areas improve their reading comprehension skills and motivate them to enjoy reading. Parents and teachers were highly involve in the conduct of the said activity, with the schools ParentTeachers Association taking the lead in collaborating the organizers. At the end of the program, the pupils skills in reading has significantly improved as revealed by the reading evaluation conducted by the project team.

FIRST AID AND BLS-CPR OLYMPICS


After the successful conduct of series of emergency preparedness and disaster response training programs among the inmates of Bataan District Jail (BDJ), a skills Olympics dubbed First-Aid and BLS-CPR Olympics was conducted last May 21. The Olympics served as a culminating program that showcased the skills and understanding of the trained inmates regarding emergency response. participants came from both the male and female dormitories. The participants were given an emergency scenario in which they have to troubleshoot the problems and apply what they had learned in the yearlong training programs. Mr. Tyron dela Rosa and Dr. Edgardo Suberi of the College of Nursing and Midwifery Balanga Campus served as facilitators/trainers in the said activity. The university has been involved in conducting such programs in the said facility since 2011.

BASIC EMERGENCY RESPONSE AND DISASTER TRIAGE TRAINING (Batch 3)

Disaster and emergency preparation training programs have been one of the prime extension projects of the Office of Extension Services this 2012. Dr. Elizabeth A. Joson. Ms. Monette Rodriguez, and Mr. Nomer N. Varua attended the First Philippine Association of Extension Program Implementers Inc.(PAEPI)-sponsored National Workshop on Geographic Information System held on March 31 at the Maritime Academy of Asia and the Pacific (MAAP). The said workshop aimed at training the participants on the use of geographic mapping for research and extension. Dr. Alejandro Tongco, a GIS expert from the Oklahoma State University, USA served as trainer and resource speaker. The PAEPI is the countrys largest network of extension program implementers based at MAAP, Mariveles, Bataan.

Basic Emergency Response and Disaster Triage Training Batch 3 was conducted last January 31, February 6, 7, 13, 14, and 20, 2012 inside the detention facility. The purpose of the training is to provide individuals with first response tasks the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, treat and transport patient sick or injured as a result of an emergency or disaster. The course was led by Mr. Ronald Tyron dela Rosa and was assisted by Dr. Edgardo Suberi and Mr. Aristotelle Quilana using the interactive lecture method (ILM) of instruction that is objective based, performance oriented, tested, and highly participatory. The experience of the instructors were enriched by the interaction between the participants. Interactive lectures and demonstration practice sessions are used to present the course content with exercises and written evaluations used to assess participant learning. A total of 44 inmates in the said facility benefited from the training. The course was ended with an emergency scenario in which the trainees had to independently solve the emergency situation on their own. Mrs. Verzonieta Iguico and Mrs. Imelda Hualda, Clinical Instructors in the College of Nursing and Midwifery served as evaluators in the scenario, who gave the trainees passing marks for successfully performing the task.
