Society's Motto The first word of the Phi Kappa Phi Motto is Philosopha (fe-loh-so-FI-uh, with FI as in fee not file). For historical reasons the Society translates this Greek word as the love of learning. The second word of the Motto is Kratet (Krah-TAY-toe). Kratet is a verb meaning to rule. In our Motto the word has the form of a strong exhortation that calls on us to let the love of learning rule. The last word of the Motto is Phtn (Foe-TONE). This word occurs in ancient Greek poetry an drama with the meaning of mortals in contrast to the immortal gods. In our Motto it refers to all humansmen and womenso we translate it was the word humanity. Thus, in saying the Phi Kappa Phi Motto, Philosopha Kratet Phtn, you are calling on yourself and others to have your lives ruled by the love of learning. Membership Membership to the Honor Society is only by invitation and is earned by meeting Phi Kappa Phis criteria of excellence and good moral character. Those invited include the upper 10% of seniors and 7.5% of juniors, along with outstanding graduate students, faculty, administrators, professional staff and alumni. Society's Logo The badge of the Society is a globe against the background of the sun, whose rays forms an expansive corona and radiate in a number of symmetrical and equal concentrations from behind the globe. These signify equivalence among the various branches of learning and represent dissemination of truth as light. Encircling the globe is a band containing the Greek letters (Phi Kappa Phi). It symbolizes a fraternal bond which girds the earth and binds the lovers of wisdom in a common purpose. The seal of the Society features the badge in its center. The badge is surrounded by a crenelated line that represents the battlements and walls of Troy. In the space between this line and the periphery of the seal appear three stars just above the badge, one for each of the three original chapters. Below the badge is the phrase Founded 1897. PKP Foundation Organized and incorporated in 2002, the Phi Kappa Phi Philippines Foundation remains to be key partner of Chapter 045 (University of the Philippines) of the Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. With the aim of supporting Chapter 045s programs and activities, the foundation has established a membership assistance fund to enable nominees to join the honor society in cases where their financial state limits their capacity to pay their initial membership fees. Supported nominees eventually return the financial assistance given them allowing succeeding nominees to avail of the same assistance. Together with Chapter 045, the foundation has also sponsored and organized a series of lectures dubbed as Culture of Excellence Lecture Series. Not only do the younger members of the honor society benefit from the knowledge shared by experts, the series also serve as a platform for promoting collaborative engagements among those from the government, academe, industry and non-governmental organizations. The foundation aims to promote academic excellence through multi-disciplinary research as well as fellowship programs made possible by its judicious utilization of grants made available to the foundation through its various fund generation activities.
