Although we have made every effort to ensure the information in the Calendar is accurate, neither the compilers nor Scottish Hill Runners can accept any responsibility for
any errors or their consequences. We suggest that for any amendments to race details, you should check the Scottish Hill Runners website at www.shr.uk.com. For races at
Highland Games events, we advise you to phone the organiser before travelling (particularly for the race’s start time), or visit www.albagames.co.uk.
If you find any errors in the Calendar, or have any amendments to make, then please e-mail the corrections to scottishhillrunners@yahoo.co.uk, or contact the Secretary
(address below).
A team of SHR volunteers has helped to produce this calendar. Thanks are due to Chris Upson (team leader), Ian Nimmo, Malcolm Patterson, Ronnie Gallagher (championship
races) and Louise Burt (advertising), plus Mark Johnston and Alasdair Anthony for Scottish Athletics information. Many thanks also to John Hepburn
(www.wagtailgraphics.co.uk), who has designed and printed this calendar.
Committee: Dave Cummins (Convenor), Malcolm Patterson (Secretary: 6 Nigel Gardens, Glasgow, G41 3UQ. 0141 632 6986, malcpat@yahoo.co.uk), Louise Burt (Treasurer),
Ronnie Gallagher (Championships and Journal: 0131 661 5484, ronnie_gallagher@yahoo.co.uk), Chris Upson (calendar co-ordination) Ian Nimmo (membership), Andy
Spenceley (statistician) and Jamie Thin.
SHR annual membership runs from 1st January and costs £8 (£2 junior/student/unwaged); cheques payable to ‘Scottish Hill Runners’. The cost for additional members at the
same address is £4 each, but only one copy of each printed publication will be sent to that address. To join the SHR, please send your name, address, phone, email, club, date
of birth with cheque to Ian Nimmo (Membership Secretary) at: 5 Whitehouse Terrace, Edinburgh, EH9 2EU; 0131 447 4735, ianimmo@googlemail.com.
Alternatively go to www.shr.uk.com/HowToJoin.aspx for instructions on how to complete the process electronically.
Race Categories
The UK Athletics Rules for Competition (1st April 2008) at www.ukathletics.net state the following:
(1) An “official UKA Fell Race” is one held under UKA Rules for Competition.
(2) A fell race is one run on fell, hill or mountain terrain and shall be categorised as follows:
Category A
(a) Should average not less than 76m (250 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).
(b) Should not have more than 20% of race distance on road.
(c) Should be at least 1.6km (one mile) in length.
Category B
(a) Should average not less than 38m (125 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).
(b) Should not have more than 30% of race distance on road.
Category C
(a) Should average not less than 30.4m (100 feet) of climb per 1.6km (mile).
(b) Should not have more than 40% of race distance on road.
(c) Should contain some genuine fell terrain.
So, e.g., Ben Nevis is category “AM”, because it has 96m of climb per km, and is 14km long.
Under 12 3 km
Over 12/Under 14 5 km
Over 14/Under 16 6 km
Over 16/Under 18 10 km
Minimum age limits are stated for each race in the Calendar. Age groups are defined by the runner’s age on 1 January 2009.
N.B. So as an example, when a race states “Over 12”, this means that the race is only for runners who were 12 years of age or over on the 1st January (i.e., born in
1996 or earlier).
There may be races where the organiser sets more restrictive age limits than those stated above – for example where there is a lot of climb or rough terrain. These age limits
are stated in the Calendar where known, but you are always advised to check with the race organiser before travelling.
If you would like a copy of the Junior Hill Running Race Calendar 2009, which is a separate listing of all hill races suitable for juniors, then please contact the Secretary (address
above).
Senior Championship
The SHR Senior Championship for 2009 consists of the following six races: Clachnaben (M), Screel (S), Stuc a'Chroin (L), Arrochar Alps (L), Meall an t-Suidhe (S) and Meall a'
Bhuachaille (M).
1. To complete the Championship, you must complete one race from each category (S, M, L), plus one other: i.e. four races in total. NB: For the 60+ category, runners are
allowed to complete any 4 out of the 6 races. Each runner who completes the Championship will be awarded a memento.
2. Medals will be awarded to the first three male and female runners in each category – Senior, V40, V50 and V60. Category winners will also receive a trophy, to be kept for
one year. Category is determined by runner’s age on the day of the race. Team prizes will be awarded to the first Senior and Over-40 teams, four runners to count for
Senior men’s teams and three for Senior women’s teams. Over-40 teams are three runners to count for both men and women. NB: An athlete can only count for one
Club's team in a given championship race.

Under 23 Championship
The 2009 SHR Under 23 Championship consists of the following five races: Clachnaben(M), Screel (S), Meall an t-Suidhe (S), Junior Home International Trial Open Race at
Menstrie (S) and Meall a' Bhuachaille (M).
1. To be eligible, runners must be born in the years 1987 to 1990 (ie they have to be under 23 for the whole of 2009). They must also have Scottish eligibility, i.e. be Scottish
by birth, or by residence, or via a first-claim Scottish club.
2. To complete the Championship, you must do at least 2 races. Runners count their 2 best results.
3. Points are awarded to the first 10 men and women, with the winner receiving one extra point:
i.e. 11 points for first, 9 points for second, 8 points for third, etc. The winner will be the runner with the highest score from their two best results. If two or more runners
have the same score, they will share the positions.
4. Medals will be awarded to the first three men and women, and mementos given to all runners completing at least two races, regardless of Scottish eligibility.
Senior Championship
The Scottish Athletics Championship Race will be The Deeside Brewery Clachnaben Hill Race on Saturday 11th April. Only individual members of Scottish Athletics will count
for the Championship (although the race itself is open to all in the usual way).
Awards will be presented to the Top 3 finishers in each of the following categories: Open (male and female), Vet 40 (male and female), Vet 50 (male).
Awards will be presented to the first finisher in each of these categories: Under 23 (male and female), Vet 50 (female), Vet 60 (male).
For Vets, category is determined by age on the day of the race. Under-23 is defined born in the years 1987 to 1990 (to be consistent with IAAF rules, runners have to be
under 23 for the whole of 2009).
There is also a club team competition, with first four to count for men’s teams, and first three to count for women’s teams. There won’t be an Inter District event at this year’s
championship race, however the fixture will be the main event from which teams will be selected to represent the Scottish Districts at the Inter Counties Championship
(Hutton Roof Crags 23rd May), although form from other races will also be taken into consideration.
Junior Competitions
The Scottish Athletics Junior Championship will take place at Ben Lomond on Saturday 9th May using the same junior courses as in 2008. The Championship is open to
members of Scottish Athletics. The categories are U19 (defined as born 1990–92), U16 (born 1993-94), U14 (born 1995-96), with separate male and female awards.
The Scottish Athletics Junior Hill Running League was introduced several years ago to encourage competitive opportunities for junior hill runners. In 2009, the League will
follow the same format of recent years. Runners will be awarded points based on their best two results of the three nominated League races, which are:
1. Scottish Athletics Junior Championships, Ben Lomond, 9th May. This is also the first of the two WMRA Youth Challenge International selection races.
2. Scolty Junior race, Banchory, 7th June. This is the second of the two WMRA Youth Challenge International selection races.
3. Junior Home International Trial Race, Menstrie, 30th August.
The League is open to members of Scottish Athletics. The categories are U19 (born 1990-92), U16 (born 1993-94), U14 (born 1995-96). Points are awarded to the first
eighteen individuals in each category, with points for the team competition following the same scoring format: 1st place 25 points, 2nd 20 points, 3rd 17 points, 4th 15 points,
5th 14 points, reducing at one point intervals down to 18th one point. As a bonus, all runners and teams who complete all three league races will be awarded an additional
two league points.
The Eddie Campbell Memorial Medal is awarded at the end of each year for excellence in junior hill running. The criteria are sportsmanship, commitment and outstanding
performance, with particular emphasis on the races detailed above. Full details can be found at www.scottishathletics.org.uk (under “Performance” > “Selection Policies”).
Aberdeenshire Series
The Aberdeenshire Series consists of the following three races: Morven, Cairn William, and Bennachie. Competitors must complete all three races, and the combined times are
used to determine the series results. Contact - David Hirst, 01339 881448.

Insurance
Scottish Hill Runners offers its own insurance policy as a privilege of SHR membership. This provides third party liability insurance for all SHR members as race organisers or as
participants for any hill race. N.B: Race organisers should note that cover is not automatic - they must register their race with SHR (Ian Nimmo) and complete the safety sign-off
document well in advance of their race. For more information, as well as the required documentation, go to www.shr.uk.com/Insurance.aspx; or contact Ian Nimmo as above .
Clubs affiliated to Scottish Athletics are covered by the UK Athletics insurance policy for all their organised athletics activities including any races promoted by the club. Race
promoters who are not athletics clubs may now affiliate to Scottish Athletics under the new category of associate membership if they wish to have their races covered by the UK
Athletics insurance policy. Scottish Athletics rules require affiliated bodies to obtain a permit for any open race they promote. Race organisers therefore have a choice of
insurance through either SHR, Scottish Athletics, or privately-arranged insurance.
Race organisers should carefully examine the available insurance schemes (there are differences!) and choose the one they judge most suitable for their requirements. For the
Scottish Athletics insurance, contact John McDonald at 0131 539 7320 (admin@scottishathletics.org.uk).
Remember that gross disregard for accepted good safety practice may invalidate any insurance.
Please send the Secretary, Malcolm Patterson (address above), in confidence, a note of any problems, accidents, incidents or near misses that occurred during your race. These will
only be made public with your permission. You will be helping SHR to draw on your experience to offer a better service to runners and organisers.
Race Results
Could race organisers please send their race results to Ian Nimmo, ianimmo@googlemail.com, as soon as possible after the race, preferably as an Excel spreadsheet. Results will
be published on the SHR website at www.shr.uk.com. We would also appreciate a short race report to post on the website.
We limit the number of teams to 500 and the event always fills to capacity. The limit ensures that we are able to visit fine venues that
might otherwise be impossible to use. The relaxed and friendly atmosphere on Friday night at the Event Centre camping field allows
friends to meet up and old acquaintances to be renewed. Wilf's Outdoor Catering provides Friday evening meals in the marquee and a
post event meal.
We like to make our event exciting and build a sense of anticipation. Apart from providing an approximate travelling time, we keep the
venue secret until just before the event so that the area is a 'surprise' to all competitors. We have been known to move 1000 of you up
to 40 miles on the Saturday morning to an unexpected start so that you can enjoy the challenge of running over the mountains for two
days as you head over the hills to finish back at the Event Centre.
Why not make a date with the LAMM and find out for yourself why many consider it the most enjoyable event of the year. We’ll see
you in the Highlands.
