BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

WELCOME

Congratulations on your promotion to Brown Belt, the beginning of true expertise. By now you are very capable of protecting yourself and the people you love. More importantly, you have developed mental and emotional skills to improve your health, relationships and quality of life. In two years of training, youve performed literally thousands of repetitions of basic strikes, kicks and blocks. Youve memorized seven complex kata and 117 self-defense techniques. You know how to hit and how to dodge. You know how to throw and how to land. You know how to breathe and how to relax. The next step in your journey is to apply this knowledge to the rest of your life. Delayed Sword just isnt appropriate in the board room or with your spouse. A solid front kick isnt useful in traffic. But the idea of remaining unhurt by attacks and then moving straight to solve the problem can be used anywhere. Sincerely,

Jason W. Brick President, Bushido Martial Arts

CREED

I will apply myself to the study of karate. I will push myself consistently to develop my mind, spirit and body beyond what I once believed to be my limits. I will think with clarity. I will move with purpose. I will act with love. I am a martial artist. I will achieve these goals.

ESSAYS Opening Comments

As a beginning student you learned what to do. Block here, strike there. Move just so. You learned strict patterns by rote and repeated them on demand. As an intermediate student you learned how to do it. A block must be aligned with your center and angled correctly, else it wont work. An effective strike is relaxed until the moment of impact. Your stances must be deep and solid, but not so much as to limit mobility. As an advanced student, your next challenge is to begin to express your kenpo personally. Put yourself in the motions, literally turning your Senseis kenpo into your own. Start by becoming involved with each and every motion in you kata or technique. Commit to your training not just physically and mentally, but emotionally. One place this can be difficult is with your earliest material. By now you know Short One Kata well enough to do it without thought. At this point of unconscious success, its easy to let the mind wander as we run through our basic material. Instead, commit to adding emotional involvement to your earliest techniques. By doing so, we open a door to important discovery even in the simplest of our basics.

BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

ESSAYS Historical

Just as all good martial artists are constantly growing, so do all quality martial arts develop and change. Kenpo is ever expanding as new ideas are developed and new realities enter the picture. For example, grappling sports and ground fighting have found new popularity in our media and culture. As this means grappling-type attacks are more likely now, many Kenpo schools have added a wrestling or grappling component to their programs. Our own Bushido Kenpo has added much to Ed Parkers original system. Weapon skills, techniques and forms were imported from the Tracy Kenpo System, as well as kata from Tang Soo Do and concepts from Kosho Ryu and Aikido. When our senior teachers realized that many of our weapon disarms are unrealistic given current technologies, we retooled those techniques to make them work in the real world. In the larger picture, Kenpo has grown, evolved and changed across the world. Many of the original Kenpo Seniors have developed their own systems and started their own organizations. Kenpo 2000, Kenpo 32, Kenpo 5.0 and Kenpo Sublevel Four are examples of how other masters have evolved the art. Our art will continue to grow, just like a good student continues to grow. As you advance in rank and skill, your own insights may well contribute to this evolution.

BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

ESSAYS Ethical

Loyalty Loyalty means sticking to your guns. Its doing right by your beliefs, your commitments and your people despite obstacles in your path. It means not allowing selfishness, hardship or fear distract you from your path. This is a simple, accurate and popular definition, but by no means the entire story. A key part of loyalty is making intelligent choices about where you place your support. It is neither blind obedience nor fanatical devotion. Loyalty can mean serving an idea at great personal cost. It can mean having an uncomfortable conversation with a friend who makes self-destructive choices. It can even mean having the person you are loyal to accusing you of disloyalty. Like faith, blind loyalty serves neither the giver nor the recipient. Loyalty can only be meaningful as part of a critical, intelligent decision that is reexamined as frequently as it is reinforced.

ESSAYS PhilosophicalPage 1

Taoism is a philosophy from eastern Asia, especially popular in China, Korea and Japan. It is not a religion, though its precepts have been incorporated into many religions from that part of the world. In this way it is much like western morality. The concept of not stealing or killing is a moral precept independent of Christianity, but still appears in the Ten Commandments. Taoism is a complex worldview with a deep history, impossible to understand in just a brief essay. There are two facets of the philosophy that are particularly important to the study of martial arts. These are Detachment and Strength in Softness. Weve discussed detachment in earlier essays: the ability to remain calm under duress through stepping back emotionally. A specific image is a powerful representation of this idea. A pebble drops into a pond, where the water ripples for just a moment before returning to perfect stillness. To expand, detachment does not mean apathy or turning a blind eye to problems. Rather, detachment allows us to perceive and solve problems more effectively. If we separate ourselves from our assumptions and attachments, we become better able to view the world as it is, rather than as we want (or fear) it to be. Without this separation and perspective it becomes impossible to find the right path.

BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

ESSAYS PhilosophicalPage 2

Similarly, detachment allows us to make decisions and act without clouded judgment. Often, the things we care most about fill us with such powerful emotion that we lose sight of the best action. Consider a fight with your spouse or another close friend. Its likely the situation would be resolved better, even avoided entirely, if one of you were able to approach the situation free of negative emotion. How would it have gone if you were both in a state focused on the shared goal of solving a problem? Detachment gives us the power to approach important challenges in that positive mental state. Strength in Softness carries its own image: a tree after a snowstorm. Thick, powerful branches break under too much snow. The load is too much for even their vast strength. In contrast, a young and flexible branch merely bends under such weight. The snow sloughs off and the branch survives. By now youve experienced this concept in sparring, grappling and sensitivity exercises. Like your physical training, this can be explored in the mental and emotional domains. The next time youre wearing yourself out trying hard, try soft instead. Of course, no philosophy can be explained in a brief essay. Some texts for further reading include The Tao of Pooh by Benjamin Hoff, Tao Te Ching attributed to Lao Tzu and the Anelects of Confucious. A little closer to home, many of the parables of Jesus Christ show a philosophy remarkably in line with Taoist thought.

ESSAYS Mental

We discussed chi during your Advanced Green training, looking at it as a tool to collect your focus. Chi can also be a tool to achieve calmness and relaxation. It can even be use to relieve pain and accelerate healing. There are many ideas as to what chi is or isnt. The simplest and most useful definition is to view it as a tool to help you focus your intent through imagery and concentration. To calm and relax yourself using chi, simply close your eyes and picture your body as a silhouette. For most people, the silhouette with be a certain color. For many people, its the same color each time. For others, a different color every visualization. As you breathe deeply, simply change the color of your silhouette. Starting with your feet, fill yourself with a calmer color (like a blue or a light yellow). Continuing to breathe, have the color rise up from your feet until your entire body is this new, calm shade. Once youre filled up, breathe deeply for another moment, then open your eyes. A similar technique can be used to help heal minor injuries. Imagine the injured area as a different color from the rest of your body. Then fill the injured body part with the regular color. This takes time and concentration. Many people will find that the area seems to resist changing color. But with focus, you can use this method to relieve the pain.

BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

ESSAYS Physical

The snake stylist is expressed in two aspects: the constrictor and the viper. Imagine a boa constrictor or Burmese python. Now picture an asp or rattlesnake. These are two very different pictures of the same sort of animal, but both vital parts of the snake concept. The constrictor controls an enemy, first making him unable to mount any attack or defense before finishing the encounter. Wrapping, grabbing, winding, wrist and leg locks, leg bars and throws are major weapons on a constrictors arsenal. Whenever possible, the constrictor seeks to steal an enemys mobility and render him helpless. For such tactics to work, the snake must have a solid connection with the ground. The heels and balls of the feet must be planted. Keep stances wide and powerful, moving from your hips and core. If you find a constrictor technique doesnt work, look first to your stance and your grounding. More often than not youll find the problem is there.

BASICS & CONCEPTS Page 1

Kenpo Code Words As mentioned earlier, the core of Kenpo is an alphabet of motion. Each basic move is considered a letter. The art of Kenpo consists of combining these letters into words, sentences, even poems of motion. To extend this metaphor, you may also have noticed that certain words have specific meanings when found in a technique name. Several words represent a certain move or concept. For example, what can you predict about a new technique with the word storm in the name? The following is an incomplete list of Kenpo Code Words, left undefined for your own exploration. Encounter Range When analyzing a technique or planning an attack, range is an important consideration. Throwing an elbow at a distance of four feet doesnt work any better than throwing a wheel kick at a distance of one foot. Your techniques and kata have already given you an instinctive understanding of distance. In terms of theory, hand combat can be viewed as occurring at five different ranges. The ranges themselves will determine the sorts of strikes, techniques and strategies you can use at that moment. Its also important to consider how to move safely from one range to another as the encounter evolves. The ranges to consider are: Safe Range: completely out of range of all weapons, even if one combatant takes a step to close the distance. Bridge Range: out of range of all weapons, but close enough to come into range by taking a single closing step. Long Range: within range of kicks and punches without taking a closing step.

BUSHIDO MARTIAL ARTS

BASICS & CONCEPTS Page 3

Short Range: within range for short kicks and punches, ideal range for elbows and knee strikes. Grappling Range: close enough to effectively use grabs, holds and throws. Ground Range: on the ground, actively rolling in a grapple.

BASICS & CONCEPTS Page 4

Learning Phases Encoding your Kenpo (and most other skills) consists of three distinct stages for each new skill, idea or technique. The ideal phase is the process of dissecting and analyzing a new technique. In this phase, students memorize the structure and sequence of the skill, learning the basics of how to apply it. By the end of this phase, a student understands how to use the skill in the environment predicted by the technique as a whole. The what-if phase consists of taking into account variables outside the original predictions of the technique. The student begins to modify the technique, adding, subtracting or changing aspects as the situation demands. The formulation phase occurs when the student is able to apply discoveries from the what-if phase back to the ideal phase of learning. The student can perform a technique automatically regardless of anticipated or unanticipated variables. This phase represents a true understanding of the technique, where adaptation is easy and automatic.
