_________________________ is on a mission, practically a one man carnival of kaleidoscopic colour, innervated energy and engrossing sound.

His rise from an unidentified, paper bag wearing animated individual, to mastermind behind some of the UKs most quirky live gigs has not gone unnoticed. Dumb, daring and unconventional, _____________ is a man that needs encrypting. A stunning debut album in ___________, a major record deal with DFA records and an assiduous tour schedule have given him the platform to put ____________ on a lofty pedestal. But however this does not mean that it all hasnt been bitterly questioned and criticised. Some people do not grasp the concept, even if there is always an invite to the modernised indie disco. How I want my live show to come across is welcoming and auspicious __________ explains. I just really wanted to do a dance thing that was like, come on, Come on, its fine were having a bloody good laugh. Thats fundamentally why I started to do __________. It could never be cool, could never be underground, and could never have a remote air to it. I felt much safer and much more honest than giving myself some nifty DJ name and wear a fresh pair of trainers every week *cough* the abhorrent DJ Fresh *cough*. I like the idea of dance music, electronic music and synth pop without the fake persona involved with them. It was really a self-centred reaction to that. At a time where DJs and producers are belligerently starting vitriolic blog turf wars on the merits of genre and production, __________ is equally unabashed and unequivocal when it comes to the gimmick of his own work both live and on record. Its a focus, seriousness and single mindedness that characterises much of this interview and indubitably his personality but its also what drives much of the playful imagination that has come to symbolise what ________ defiantly stands for. I think more of a gimmick having a huge wall or LED screen and hiding behind that, lets take Albarns Gorillaz as an example, he reasons I certainly think the way we deal with the shows is quite honest. People always talk about the confetti and dancers on stage but Ive only got two little confetti cannons that will only reach the front row if Im lucky and the dancers, well they are just friends of the family. Its minor really but know one notices that, if I get paid more Ill turn into one of those acts that arent really on stage anymore, he muses. Underpinning much of the success is a stalwart commitment and refusal to bow down to genre. Once alienated by the house scene and enraptured by the monstrous power of jungle, specifying genres is the single thing not welcome. For __________, theres obviously a great source of pride in his style-hopping diversity, but its also one thats opened him up to the mainstream and, probably, the prospect of being considered the one thing hes castigated against for so long. Yeah its nice. Its what I wanted and I feel more open to write music that I want to write and not just create stuff, which fits in to a certain sound. Its become a level of popular but lets be straight about this: its not cool. Blogs, papers and

magazines have always had questions marks over it and that completely fine with me. _________ has answered most of those questions. A debut that captures both the blaze of colours and the energy of the live show, its a vibrant blend of mainstream-friendly big beat, electro pop energy and easy going lyrics. An allegation of intent, its a record determined to outlive fleeting dance-floor trends, but it also presents a challenge of balancing the earlier tracks which got ________ out and in everyones faces, and the new (which the blogosphere are obsessing with). That was a funny thing for me because I knew that some fans had known my music for a couple of years, I supported EELS, Field Music and The Klaxons which obviously got people standing at my merch stand asking for music. There is my version of the record and the industries version of it, theyve definitely clashed. Of course, I was thinking, Is that going to work? and even though about three tracks had been around for a good while, if you think about the amount of people that heard it first time around, the number hearing it on the album will be a vast increase. And theyre some of the best tracks. To make up for that I made the record longer than would be expected, some would say that was brave, however if youre a fan it could be seen as a god send. I wanted to create something that you could come back to in a year, and there is still some stuff to unravel. I dont know, is an album something, which can be used as a puzzle? I dont really get the concept of an album, I would much rather release a collection of tracks, at the same time. He laughs disconcertedly. Pigeonholing is a desperately dirty word for any producer. Scene, style and genre get celebrated, aped and glamourised before being chewed, swallowed and regurgitated back into the blogosphere. The wave is ever changing and deciding to slow down and stick to your own pace is brave and mostly seen as moronic. Unwavering in his dedication to make music the right way, ____________ might be a snapshot of various references but, so far, it remains incomparable, if not unique. Thats how Ive tried to view it, avoiding whats new says ____________. In the last couple of months writing the record, I was just listening to what music I love instead of what is cool, popular, hip or whatever. I didnt even want to react to it or bounce off it in any way because I wanted things to stand up. It might sound old in six months time or a month, but the goal was certainly to stay as reference free as possible Its hard in dance and electronic music because its all about referencing. You definitely have a small voice in your head when you write music. Some of them are mainstream listeners going, Fuck! This is weird, and then the intellectual listeners are responding with This has all been done before. I tried to go down the route I was feeling most insecure about, find something that felt bad and then further focused on that. I had hoped that if I tried to make it even more wrong, it would sound right at the end but like nothing that has been released before.

For all the fun and carefree abandonment _______ evokes, theres noticeable hard edge to _______. Fresh faced he might be, but his motivation and ambition is tangible. Having released earlier EPs through Greco Roman, the move to DFA was considered and knowledgeable decision to simply hit a bigger more relevant audience. And ______s biggest benefit, being abel to now pay rent. That was it. If i wasnt with a major record label, I wouldnt be able to afford it basically. Ive been on the road for a year non-stop and that is only because ive signed that contract and I got an advance and some money to live off for a bit. I would never have been able to do that without DFA. Its why so many indie bands sin with a major label and then get dropped, they havent really got an option. It just costs to much money to take a band on tour and play for only 39 people and his dog. Its really shit. The economics and logistics aside, the dream hasnt really changed. Inspired by - and clearly devoted to - the live show, this is where the glitter ball heart of _____ is abundantly evident. Admittedly, finding the concept of deconstructing his debut record very hard, the overall live experience, or the prospect of helplessly watching it crumble, is never far from ______s mind. When Im writing anything. Ive always got the live show at the back at the back of my head. Most of them are ready to go anyway, but then but I may then change the tempo or vocals, I may add extra keyboard or take some out. At the moment it is not as slick as it should be musically its not where I want to be, but I dont think there is another way to write. I still have that thing where the mac is doing 70% of the graft and the vocals and keyboards are doing the other 30. It still feels really tight and dance music as a whole is supposed to be tight, however if you go back to those indie discos, its quite loose. Id rather it felt like a disco band than a techno DJ. All the reasons that mean _________ and ____________ shouldnt be cool have evolved into the exact opposite and instead are the main reasons why fans feel invited by happy adoration. Driven and dedicated to the cause while still having a lack of serious self-consciousness is a raw talent in which dance music abides, _________s all-encompassing, all- access approach to the experience make _________________ both credible and incredible. While ______ would modestly never admit to it, it is more or less a mission completed. My managements favourite part of any of my shows is when I fuck something up, he smiles But when I mess up and I feel the whole show is falling apart I will apologise and feel really dumb about but everyone will just shout Yeah! And carry on. There is something in that, there is something in showing you are a human being up on that stage and not a computer or a fully functioning robot. Its why I wanted to do this, to not be that, to make it fun.

The types of people that come to my gigs are so varied. There are indie kids, dance kids, 40 year olds and just people you wouldnt expect to see at any music venue around the country I cant think of a better thing than that. Some bands have that kind of clan but Im really happy and comfortable with my mixed audience. That is one thing that Im the happiest about, I am almost sort of smug. That is definitely part of the mission.
