William Topping, Colin Pitman, Michael Harper October 8th, 2010 Universal TV Remote Control Project Description: The

desired project is to build a pre-programmed universal TV remote control with a database of common TV codes. The goal would be the to limit the amount of programming required for the remote, to the point where the user would simply point the remote at the desired TV. If the TVs code exists in the remotes database the remote will emit that code. Microcontroller: For the remote to function as desired, a PIC microcontroller with sufficient memory to hold all the codes will be required. After researching the different PIC16F family members the PIC16F87X microcontroller looks to be an appropriate choice because of its four data banks and relative simplicity in design. Design Challenges: Speed and optimization will be a big factor. The remote will potentially have to search through and execute a large number of codes each time a button is pressed. The method of searching through these codes will have a direct affect on the response time of the remote. In other words the time between pressing a button and execution on the TV should be a second or less.
