Martin x

Arnold And what's your phone number?

Martin
Arnold
Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay. This statement's being recorded, being

tape-recorded. Does that meet your approval?

Martin Yes.

Arnold Okay. I'm taking this statement in reference to

the events that occurred on August 20, 2008,
that occurred during the PRP football practice.
Please, describe the events of that day from the
beginning to the end of practice as best you can
remember? What do you guys start out doin'
that day when practice started?

Martin Uh, we usually do, uh, team stretchin'. Then, it

was, uh, we had team take-offs.

Arnold Okay.

Martin Then we break into, uh, individual period.

Arnold Individual groups?

Martin Yeah.

Arnold O.K. like, position groups?

Martin Yes sir.

Arnold Okay.

Martin … running back, o.l. lineman …

Arnold Gotcha.

Arnold Gotcha. Uh, what's after that?

Martin Uh, then we get a water break.

Arnold Is that, is that when y'all have a water break

after that, or during that time?

Martin That was the first time, That was the first time
we had a water break.

Arnold First water break?

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay.
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Martin Then, we went back and did some more, uh,

individual prepare, no, group. Yeah.

Arnold Group stuff?

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay.

Martin And then we came back in to 7 on 7.

Arnold Okay.

Martin Which is like, you know…

Arnold Start scrimmage and stuff?

Martin Not scrimmagin', but it would just be like, h,

offense against the defense and special teams.

Arnold Gotcha. Gotcha. Okay.

Martin Then I think we got another break for water.

Arnold Okay.

Martin Then, I think, like, you know, like, 'cause, you

know, to be honest with you, a few of us was
like loafin' around and all that…

Arnold Yeah.

Martin …messin' up.

Arnold Okay. And what happens, you guys start

runnin' or what happened after that?

Martin Yeah, he's, yeah. That's, yeah.

Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Arnold And what happened, what did, what did Coach

say?

Martin Well, it's like you thinkin' you come loafin'

around, so…

Arnold Okay.

Martin …after we had, after that, our last water break,

we had to come back and line up.

Arnold Okay.

Martin That, line up and start sprinting.

Arnold How many, are water breaks given usually to

the whole team, individuals, or groups, or just
all the above?

Martin Most of the time it'd be, yeah, he'd ask us if we

need water or anything.

Arnold Okay.

Martin So then we'll go over.

Arnold Did you do that by groups? Or did you…

Martin Yeah. It'd be like runnin' backs would go

whenever they need water. Linemen would
go…

Arnold Gotcha.

Martin …whenever they need water.

Arnold How many water breaks did y'all get on that

day? Do you know? I know you said up here,
Page 5 of 16
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

you had, uh…

Martin It's about, probably about two.

Arnold Two?

Martin About two, three.

Arnold You think you had two or three?

Martin At least that much.

Arnold Okay. I'll put two or three down. Uh, and so

after the last water break, what did Coach say,
or what happened then?

Martin Like I was sayin' before, it's 'cause we was

loafin' around…

Arnold Yeah.

Martin …basically. He's, uh, 'cause it was, really, we

was, it was uh, I think it was that because it
was, uh, two days before scrimmage. So, you
know, he had to…

Arnold Naturally. He had to…

Martin He had to, we had to be on point and stuff.

Arnold Yeah.

Martin He had to, you know, get, do what he had to do

done.

Arnold Yeah. That's right. All coaches do that. So…

Martin Yeah.
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Arnold Uh, so after that last break, then, you said he

got on you guys for bein' lazy, or bein', uh…

Martin Yeah. Loafin' around.

Arnold …loafin' around.

Martin Messin', uh, messin' up on all the, uh…

Arnold So you said, you think you all were doin' the
sprints for loafin'?

Martin That, and, uh, uh, most likely, just because, uh,
he said it's conditioning part anyway. So…

Arnold Okay.

Martin We had to be in condition to play.

Arnold Well, that's true.

Martin We had to be in condition to, you know, to…

Arnold Okay. How many sprints did you're group

run?

Martin Uh, it'd be the li'le guys and it would be the,

uh, linemen…

Arnold Linemen?

Martin So…

Arnold Which group do you run in?

Martin I run in the li'le guys group.

Arnold Li'le guys. Alright. How many you think you

ran? How many…
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Martin Uh, I wasn't…

Arnold You, do you all call 'em sprints, or what do you

all call 'em?

Martin We call 'em gassers.

Arnold Gasures. Okay. And that's back and forth, up,

back; side-to-side. Right?

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay. What, uh, how many do you think your

group ran?

Martin To be honest with you, I really don't know.

Arnold Don't know? Okay. That's alright…

Martin I know, uh…

Arnold …And if you're, was it more than usual, less

than usual, about the same?

Martin It was probably about the same. But it was

probably, you know, because we was loafin'
around, so…

Arnold Yeah.

Martin ...I think it's probably…

Arnold How many did you, did you ever take any of
your equipment off? Your helmet, your
shoulder padding? Anything else?

Martin Yeah. He let us take that, uh, the shoulder pads

off and the helmets off.
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Arnold How many did you run before you got to do

that?

Martin Uh, we was probably halfway done.

Arnold Halfway?

Martin Half, about half of it done.

Arnold And give me a guess on how many you think

you ran. If you just had to give me a guess.

Martin Maybe ten. Fifteen.

Arnold Okay.

Martin Close to it. Just put 10 to 20.

Arnold Okay.

Martin So it was about… Yeah.

Arnold That's fair enough. Uh, so you were about

halfway when you had to take... Did you take
your helmet and your shoulder pads off, or just
one or the other?

Martin One or the other.

Arnold You know, the first the shoulder pads…

Martin It'd, it'd just been the helmets.

Arnold …then the second?

Martin It 'ave just been the helmets. Come back, and

shoulder pads.

Arnold How many did you run in

Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

between that time?

Martin It was just one.

Arnold One? Okay.

Martin Just one. Soon as you get done with that one…

Arnold So you did another ten or so after you took off

your helmets and your shoulder pads?

Martin I don't know if it was ten, but we did the other

half.

Arnold The other half. Gotcha. Okay.

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay. That makes perfect sense. Yeah, it's

hard… You know, it's hard for you to sit here
and say how many did you run? You're tired,
you're tryin' to get through it…

Martin Yeah.

Arnold …You're not countin'. You're just hopin' you

finish up. I was the same way.

Martin I wasn't, uh, worried about getting' through, I

was… 'Cause, you know, we conditioned, uh,
all the time so… I was just, I was just runnin'.

Arnold Yeah. But you just wanted… You still…

Don't you wanta finish it because you know
you're…

Martin Yeah.

Arnold …in shape, and you wanta…

Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Martin Yeah.

Arnold …you know, get through it. And when I'm

sayin' through it, I just mean just so you can be
done because you're… At some point you’ve
got to get fatigued.

Martin Yeah.

Arnold But if, if you don't wanta give… If you

wanta… I mean, some could 'ave run more.
I'm sure therer were guys that day, they would
'ave run more. Not me when I run. But… But
you were okay? You didn't get sick or
anything?

Martin No.

Arnold You know, throwin' up or cramps or anything?

Martin No.

Arnold Okay. You're in pretty good shape?

Martin Yeah. I'm in pretty good shape.

Arnold Good. Uh, how, total time of runnin' sprints or

running gasures, how long do you think that
was? Minutes? That kind of thing.

Martin Maybe half an hour.

Arnold Half an hour? Okay.

Martin I think half-an-hour at least.

Arnold Okay.
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Martin Maybe the next one went 30 minutes, too. I'm

not for sure.

Arnold Okay.

Martin That day. 'Cause, you know, you out there in

the sun, you...

Arnold Right. It's hard to…

Martin …you ain't got time…

Arnold Right. You know where to watch, obviously.

Martin Just practice.

Arnold Did any of you or your… Did either you or

any of your teammates ask for a water break
during those gassers?

Martin I 'on't know if anybody down on my end asked

for water.

Arnold Okay. Did, uh, did you see anybody else

getting' sick?

Martin Maybe a…. Yeah, a few people. I mean, you

know, there's mostly the big guys.

Arnold Right.

Martin Maybe a few small guys.

Arnold What were they doin'? Were they… Were

they throwin' up? Were they just havin' trouble
breathing'? All the above?

Martin Uh, some people was like… You know, 'cause

you know, like dried out. So you not really
Page 12 of 16
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

throwin' up any.

Arnold Yeah.

Martin They could just spit.

Arnold Okay. But you didn't get sick during, during

the sprints?

Martin No.

Arnold You know the names of anybody else that got

sick?

Martin Uh, Uh, the only two people, you know, that
was, two people that was (inaudible)…

Arnold You know their names?

Martin …I got a call. The people there? Parents were

there?

Arnold Yeah. Do you know his name?

Martin Max Gilpin.

Arnold Max. Okay. And Max who died, obviously.

Who was the other one you know?

Martin Uh, I don't know for sure. I know, I know I

seen his face, but…

Arnold Okay.

Martin It was Antonio, I think.

Arnold Antonio. Okay. Good.

Martin I think.
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Arnold And you know which one of those guys got

sick first? Or went out first. Or passed…

Martin Uh…

Arnold …What, did they pass out, or do you know?

Martin Uh, I think Antonio got sick first.

Arnold Okay.

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Do you know what happened to him that he

just didn't… Did he drop out, pass out, you
know?

Martin Nah, he didn't drop out or anything. I think

he's just… Most likely, I think he just went
into shock probably.

Arnold Okay.

Martin You know, just because, you know…

Arnold How about Max?

Martin Well, Max, uh, maybe he had to much water in

his body; 'cause, you know, he's a big guy…

Arnold Yeah.

Martin …so… You know. That's what I was thinkin'

more or less.

Arnold Well, but did you see him fall down or did
he…
Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Martin Nah…

Arnold …did he take a bre…

Martin …I didn't see him fall down.

Arnold …or what did he do? Okay. Uh, during the

prac… During any of the practices this year,
have you seen anybody, any of your teammates
be injured or quittin' the team?

Martin Uh, no. Being injured? No…

Arnold Like if somebody gets injured, sprangs an

ankle, somethin' like that. What is the normal
protocol? What do they normally do?

Martin Most likely they… It's a med bag we have,

you know…

Arnold Okay.

Martin 'Cause, you know, we have, I 'on't know, like a

coach doctor, you know. So, you know…

Arnold Do they treat 'em right away when they get

injured like that?

Martin Yeah.

Arnold Okay. Good.

Martin Treat 'em right away. He'll, they'll let 'em leave
practice and then go straight to the whirlpool.

Arnold Okay. But you have a trainer or somethin'…

Martin Yeah. So…

Statement: Marquess Martin / Case #08197(A)
Date: September 9, 2008

Arnold …you know, a coach or…

Martin … to relax they muscles.

Arnold Okay.

Martin (Inaudible).

Arnold Uh, has anyone influenced you in any way to

withhold information or change any of the
facts that actually occurred during that
practice?

Martin No.

Arnold Is everything you're telling me truthful?

Martin Yes.

Arnold Do you have anything else you want to ask me

or anything else you wanta add about that day
or football in general?

Martin Uh, yeah. I mean, you gotta respect this, uh,

him and the coaching staff because they…
Like you said, it's PRP, It's, uh, pure hard-
nosed football. So he expects you to come
here and work hard every day.

Arnold That's right. And for the most part, do you

guys work hard every day?

Martin Yeah. It's a tough football team. And just

sports in general.

Arnold Yeah. So you think that, you got respect for

Coach and the staff, and they respect you to
work hard every day.
