2013 NATIONAL STAGE MANAGEMENT CONFERENCE SUNDAY 17 MARCH 2013 TRICYCLE THEATRE LONDON

PROGRAMME PARTNER: Association of British Theatre Technicians

The ABTT campaigns to ensure regulation is appropriate for theatrical presentation. We seek to be a voice for the practicing technician and we rely upon our membership to enable us to do this. We provide training and professional development for working technicians and we strive to establish the means by which technicians may gain recognition for their skills and experience whenever and wherever required. The Association was established to advance the understanding of the technical subjects connected with the theatre and theatrical presentation and to promote good theatre design and technical presentation of theatrical works. In order to do this we advocate efficient standards of planning for the building or reconstruction of theatres and promote theatre design offering the widest possible scope for theatrical presentation. We encourage improvement in the design and the proper installation and use of stage equipment. We advocate an enlightened and flexible approach to measures for public safety in theatres. We encourage high standards of work in all technical matters relating the theatre. We facilitate the exchange of ideas and information amongst theatre technicians in any part of the world, paying attention to the different needs and opportunities of each locality, organisation and form of theatre. www.abtt.org.uk

WELCOME
Rebecca Emery
SMA Chair
Welcome to the Stage Management Conference 2013! Due to the overwhelming success of last years inaugural event we are back bigger, better and in a fantastic new venue here at the Tricycle. After receiving such great feedback for last years conference we have looked into many different areas of interest for our panel discussion, breakout sessions and surgeries in order to give all our Stage Managers as much help, information and food for thought as we can. I hope you have a great time and look forward to meeting old friends and hopefully making new ones.

Andy Rowley
SMA Executive Director
Let me add my welcome to this, our second stage management conference. Last year Barbara talked of the event being a world first, and although we know of some gatherings of stage managers in the US, we still believe that you are attending the only conference by stage managers, and just for stage managers worldwide. More importantly, this is an event where busy backstage people can take a day out: a day off from thinking about other people and organising their lives; a time to think about our own lives and careers and strike off items from personal to do lists. Maybe the most important aspect of this gathering is to share thoughts and ideas, even problems, with our peers in a safe environment. Here we can make new contacts and to use the other N word - network! It is likely that very few stage management spend enough time thinking about themselves and about what they need in their working lives. I hope today will offer that chance, and give us a stimulating opportunity to refresh and renew our enthusiasm for our very demanding - but satisfying - jobs. As one member said last year: you caught me at a time when I needed to be reminded of what I do and why I do it The SMA exists - as you do - to support Excellence in Performance. Today is one example of how we can support excellence in your work and help you to build your career.

Highly respected in the industry as an inspirational and creative theatre professional, Jodi is a passionate advocate for the value of stage management skills and experience in the industry as a whole, and sees the National Stage Management Conference as an important opportunity for stage management to debate, renew contacts and network - which she regards as a key skill. PANEL DEBATE Theatre styles are changing, more stage management than ever are fulfilling multiple roles, and the technology that we all use continues to evolve very fast. We shall be looking at the future of the work we do and asking some hot questions that we will all need to address in the next ten years. How can we all make sure that we have the skills needed to compete?

SESSIONS
Can you work as an SM and look after children? Can, and should, we share our jobs? Is it crazy to expect to have a personal life and an SM job? We know that SM'ing involves 'anti-social' hours, but are our employers doing enough to help? Identifying the weapon; its type and what it is made from to help you decide whether to repair, clean or destroy. Basic maintenance and cleaning advice on swords and guns. Including Q&A. Stage Electrics brings us up to date with the latest portable SM desks and comms, and seek your views on the next steps for stage management technology - a really great session to learn more about stage technology from the experts, and share new ideas affecting show callers and all stage management. What is stress, how to identify it, manage it and prevent it. We will be looking at the mental health challenges facing personnel working in the performing arts and the support available through BAPAM (British Association for Performing Arts Medicine). You can email the SMA Office in advance with your CV or any queries regarding accounting or insurance and we will make an appointment for you to see one of the experts at the conference. Or simply sign up for a 1:2:1 on arrival at the conference - or just drop by any of the experts tables during the day.
