Wool Soaker

Designed by Anna Tapp I made the soaker shown from Lion Fishermans Wool. Before felting the soaker, I dyed it in Kool Aid. I found that a slightly felted soaker is a more effective moisture barrier for a very wet diaper.

Materials: 3 (6) oz. 100% wool worsted weight yarn Size 9 (5.5 mm) knitting needles for felting, size 6 (4 mm) needles if not felting Tapestry needle 3 Stitch holders elastic Gauge: 21 sts and 26 rows = 4 for larger needles NOTE: The directions are written for size Large (X-Large). Large is equivalent to 18-24 months, and X-Large to 2T-3T.

Back: Cast on 54 stitches Row 1: (K2, p2) across. Row 2: (P2, k2) across. Rows 3-4: Repeat Row 1-2 ribbing pattern. Row 5: (K2, yo, p2tog) across to last 2 sts, k2. Rows 6-10: Repeat Row 1-2 ribbing pattern. Row 11: Knit across. Row 12: Purl across. Rows 13-14: Repeat Rows 11-12. Increase Short Row: Row 15: K to last 8 sts, turn, p to last 8 sts, turn, k to last 9 sts, increase in next st, k to end. 55 sts. Row 16: P to last 9 sts, increase in next st, p to end. 56 sts. Rows 17-18: Repeat Rows 11-12. 56 sts. Rows 19-38 (46): Repeat Increase Short Row 5 (7) more times. 66 (70) sts. Normal Short Row: Row 39 (47): K to last 8 sts, turn, p to last 8 sts, turn, k to end. 66 (70) sts. Row 40 (48): Purl across. Rows 41-42 (49-50): Repeat Rows 11-12. Rows 43-50 (51-58): Repeat Normal Short Row twice more. 66 (70) sts. Rows 51-52 (59-60): Repeat Rows 11-12. Set aside and do not bind off. Front: Cast on 54 sts. Rows 1-12: Repeat Rows 1-12 for Back. 54 sts. Rows 13-52 (60): Repeat Rows 11-12 for Back. 54 sts. First Leg: Using Figure 1 as a guide, place Back on stitch holders in the following way - First 28 (30) on one, next 10 on one, and last 28 (30) on one. Row 1: Using Figure 1 as a guide, pick up end of Front, k22, pick up stitch holder with the last 28 (30) sts of the Back, starting at the most inward stitch, k28 (30) across to end of Back. Row 2: Purl across. Continue in pattern until from desired length. Last 6 Rows: Knit across. Bind off. (About 24 (30) rows for shorties) Second Leg: Place Front on stitch holders in the following way - Center 10 on one holder, last 22 on another holder. Row 1: Using the Figure as a reference, pick up end of Back, k28 (30), pick up stitch holder with the last 22 sts of the Front, starting at the most inward stitch, k22 across to the end of Front.

Continue as for First Leg. Bind off. Figure 1 (written for Size Large)

Finishing: Sew side seams. Remove the center 10 sts from the holders and sew together opening. Weave elastic through yo holes in waistband. Felting: For a more dense and water resistant soaker, carefully felt the finished product until you have your desired size/thickness combination.
