Madhrasathul Ahmadhiyya, Male SCOND TERM TEST 2003

PHYSICS Grade 10 Paper: 4 Alternative to Practical Duration: 1 Hour

Name: Reg. No. . Class: . Instructions to candidates Read the instructions carefully. Write your name, index number, class and register number. Answer ALL questions. Write your answers in the space provided on the question paper. Use a blue or black ballpoint pen to answer. Index: .

Information for candidates The number of marks is given in brackets ( ) .

SECTION A 1a) The diagram illustrates an experiment to measure g, the acceleration of free fall. A ball is dropped which breaks a light beam on photodiode. The clock is started when the ball stops the light shining on the photodiode. Vertically below the first light beam a second light beam shines on another photodiode. When the ball continuing in its fall breaks this beam, the clock is stopped.

i)

Mark on the diagram the distance you would measure.

If s is 5 cm and t is 0.1 s, calculate the value of g. [2]

iii)

Explain one way, other than taking the average of a number of readings, by which the reliability of the experiment could be improved.

b) In an experiment to measure the acceleration of free fall, a mass of 1 kg was attached to a piece of tape. The mass was allowed to fall freely and the tape passed through a ticker timer which made 50 dots on the tape every school. The tape (not drawn to scale) is shown below. Measurements taken from the tape show that the velocity at X was 25 cm/s and the velocity at Y was 125 cm/s. [1]

Calculate the acceleration of the 1 kg mass between X and Y. 2. a) The diagram shows a flask containing water at 80C. A tube from the flask is connected to a vacuum pump. [2]

i)

What would be observed as the air above the water is withdrawn by the vacuum pump? ii) Explain the observation.

b) The table below shows the temperature of a liquid in a beaker as it cools in a laboratory. Temperature/C Time/minutes 86 0 60 1 55 2 55 3 55 4 55 5 49 6 41 7 [3] [1]

i) ii)
3.

Draw a graph of temperature against time. State the freezing point of the liquid. . A magnet is moved steadily towards a solenoid as shown in the diagram. The ends of solenoid are connected to a low-resistance centre-zero galvanometer. As the N-pole of the magnet is moved towards the solenoid, the galvanometer deflects to the right.

a)

What will the deflection on the galvanometer be when i) The magnet is moved ore quickly towards the solenoid? ii) The magnet is turned round so that the S-pole faces the solenoid and the magnet is moved away from the solenoid? [1] [1]

iii) The magnet is held stationary with half the magnet inside the solenoid?

b) How will the deflection on the galvanometer alter when the N-pole is moving towards the solenoid if i) A high resistance is placed in series with the galvanometer? [1] [1]

4. Sofoora and Shafinaz used the apparatus below to investigate the changes in pressure in a gas as the temperature is varied. To vary the temperature of the air in the flask the water bucket was used. The temperature inside the bucket could be raised by adding boiling water.

They obtained the following results:

Temperature in C 0 15 30 45 60 75 90
a)

Pressure in kPa 95 100 105 111 116 122 127

How do you think the girls obtained the starting temperature of 0C in the bucket? [1]

b)

What precautions would they have taken to ensure that the temperature of the air inside the flask is the same as that shown on the thermometer in the bucket? [2]

c)

Their results are plotted on the graph below.

[1]

i)

On the graph draw the line of best fit. Firux suggests that their results showed that the pressure is proportional to temperature. Haleema did not agree, saying If that were true then doubling the temperature should double in the pressure. Our results dont show that! Do you agree with Firux or Haleema? Discuss.

5.

a)

The diagram shows an object OO placed in front of a converging lens. The image is formed on the line XY.

i)

Draw three rays leaving O (the arrow head at the top of the object) and passing through the lens. Show clearly the position of the image. Show the path of two rays leaving M (the mid-point of OO which pass through the lens and travel to the image.

b)

Suppose the lens were dropped and broken into two approximately equal pieces. What effect, if any, would this have on the brightness and size of the image formed in (a) (i).
