to river travel in London
London is a riparian city in the truest sense, and its history and development has been intertwined with the winding Thames throughout the ages. Travelling on the river provides a relaxing way of getting about that both avoids the unpredictability of road traffic, and offers some littleseen vistas of the capital. After a period of stagnation, the river has been coming back to life over the past few decades a trend that will only continue as we make it cleaner and more pleasant. We are recognising its unfulfilled potential and I am currently working with Transport for London, river operators and pier owners to develop a co-ordinated approach to make going by boat more convenient for tourists and commuters alike expanding services, upgrading and extending piers, and rolling out Oyster. In the meantime there are some fantastic services already on offer. This comprehensive guide, along with the information on Transport for Londons website, will help you to plan your journey with confidence whether commuting, travelling to our two riverside Tate galleries, or enjoying a gentle trip on the river taking in the sights of Westminster, Kew, or Maritime Greenwich. However you intend to travel on the Thames I hope this guide will provide you with all you need.

Fares and ticketing

Buying your ticket You should purchase your ticket from the ticket office prior to boarding the boat. However, on some services, you will need to buy your ticket on the boat. Please check local publicity at piers for details. Child and Senior Citizen rates Throughout this booklet, fares for children apply to those aged 5-15 years inclusive. Under 5s travel for free. Senior Citizen rates apply to those of pensionable age who are not Freedom Pass holders. Please refer to individual fare information for details.

Fares discounts
In line with the Mayors Transport Strategy, the majority of riverboat operators offer discounts off the normal adult and child fares featured in this booklet (see individual fare information for details). Freedom Pass holders Many operators offer 1/2 off the normal advertised adult fare on production of a valid Freedom Pass at the time of travel. Travelcard holders Many operators offer 1/3 off normal advertised adult and child fares on production of a valid Travelcard or Oyster card, loaded with a valid Travelcard, when purchasing a ticket. Some restrictions apply. Oyster cards with pay as you go are not accepted. London Student Union Card holders Holders of London Student Photocards may also qualify for discounted fares. Please check with individual operators for the availability of this discount. Dogs and bicycles It may well be possible to take dogs and bicycles on board: please check with the boat operator in advance.
