Object Relations Theory in Relationships

Object Relations Theory deals with the expectations we form from childhood experiences that influence our adult relationships. We relate to others based on templates formed by age 7 from our relationships with parents. In relationships, each person brings these "internal objects" that can lead to problems if their expectations are not met, called a "pathogenic introject." Projective identification is a process where one person manipulates another to behave in a prescribed way to fulfill their relational needs formed in childhood, such as needing to feel cared for, powerful, or sexually desired. Personality disorders develop from nurture, not nature, and are characterized by inflexible patterns of behavior that impair social and occupational functioning.

When we get married both individuals come into the relationship with internal objects they acquired in their 0-7yrs. When the couple react in a negative manner because of the established template and it because serious problems it becomes a pathogenic (contaminated) introject. These are figures of the past that are diseased.

Object Relations Theory Process called Projective Identification Are patterns of interpersonal behavior in which a person induces other to behave or respond in a prescribed or predictable fashion.
