PHOENIX CINEMA

A P R I L & M AY 2 0 1 3

WELCOME
This Spring sees a varied mix of main features ranging from Potiche director Franois Ozons In The House to Danish thriller A Hijacking. Other features on offer include ensemble piece A Late Quartet, Ryan Gosling in The Place Beyond the Pines and the Oscar nominated documentary The Gatekeepers. The highlight of the coming months has to be the return of Phoenix favourite Pedro Almodovar with his new film Im So Excited. In an attempt to avoid the pun, lets just say we are looking forward to this an awful lot. Dont miss a preview on 23 April with a satellite Q&A and a double bill of his earlier work on 21 April (see page 29). Weve packed in so many special shows in the next two months that I cant include them all here but head to page 25 for more details. Highlights include an 80th anniversary screening of King Kong, The Dam Busters, a classic 60s Doctor Who double bill, documentaries and two more late-night collaborations with Cigarette Burns. Also check out pages 16 & 17 to find out about our holiday workshops and special family screenings during the Easter Holidays and Half Term. Our summer season of opera from Glyndebourne is now on sale, and look out for more information on the new Met and Bolshoi ballet seasons in coming weeks. Our members enjoy priority booking on top of discounts for selected special events, so now is the perfect time to sign up! We are also delighted to present a new strand that looks as famous art work, beginning with EXHIBITION: Manet on the 11th and 15th April. On a final note, we are supporting the Grange project, part of the Big Local scheme, which has given 1million to improve the lives of those in the community in and around the Grange Estate. If you would like to voice your opinion, please contact Paul Bragman on 0208 442 2379 or paul@communityregen.net. - Neil Rebak, General Manager 1

FROM FRIDAY 29 MARCH

FROM FRIDAY 5 APRIL

In the House (15)

1hr 45. France 2012. Directed by Franois Ozon. With Fabrice Luchini, Ernst Umhauer, Kristin Scott Thomas, Emmanuelle Seigner, Denis Mnochet, Yolande Moreau. In French with English subtitles. French director Ozon (Potiche) is back with a dark comedy drama, with more than a hint of Woody Allen, that plays with the lines between reality and fiction, voyeurism and action. A school boy becomes obsessed with the home-life of a friend, and attempts to insinuate himself into the household, telling the tale through his essays for his teacher, Germaine (Luchini). Germaine and his wife (Scott-Thomas) become fixated by his writing, both outraged and entranced and begin to shape the story to their own will...
3

A Late Quartet (15)

1hr 45. USA 2012. Directed by Yaron Zilberman. With Christopher Walken, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Catherine Keener, Imogen Poots, Wallace Shawn. An acting showcase, A Late Quartet, gives some of the most talented names in the business the chance to demonstrate their abilities. Tension, lust and hidden resentments come to the surface when Peter (Walken) announces his retirement after 25 years as cellist in a worldrenowned quartet, forcing the other members (played by Hoffman, Keener and Ivanar) into exploring problems in the lives they lead outside the music.

FROM FRIDAY 12 APRIL

FROM FRIDAY 19 April

The Place Beyond the Pines (15)

2hrs 20. USA 2012. Directed by Derek Cianfrance. With Ryan Gosling, Bradley Cooper, Eva Mendes, Ray Liotta, Rose Byrne. A mysterious motorcycle driver, Luke (Gosling) leaves his life in a travelling Carnival of Death to attempt to connect with his newborn son and former lover (Mendes). Desperate to provide for them, he decides to commit a crime, a decision that leaves him on a collision course with an ambitious Police officer (Cooper) and a corrupt police department. As the sweeping drama unfolds, the legacy is felt for years to come. The Place Beyond the Pines is the highly anticipated follow-up to Derek Cianfrances 2010 Blue Valentine, reuniting him with star Ryan Gosling, and marking his first collaboration with Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper (Silver Linings Playbook).
5

Love is All You Need (15)

1hr 56. Denmark/Sweden/Italy/France/Germany 2012. Directed by Susanne Bier. With Pierce Brosnan, Kim Bodnia, Trine Dyrholm, Paprika Steen. In Danish and Italian with English subtitles, and English. Ida (Dyrholm) is a relentlessly cheerful hairdresser who catches her husband cheating on her on the same day she discovers her cancer is in remission. Philip (Brosnan) is a middle-aged widower, struggling to deal with the death of his wife many years earlier. When her daughter and his son announce their whirlwind nuptials to be held in an idyllic Italian villa, the two collide, clashing at first, but learning to bond over their troubles. A treat for intelligent adults who also enjoy lighter fare, Oscar winner Susanne Bier (In a Better World) has delivered a warm romantic romp despite its sad tinges, that has charmed audiences in Cannes and Venice.
6

FROM FRIDAY 26 APRIL

FROM FRIDAY 26 APRIL

Promised Land (TBC)

1hr 46 (TBC). USA/United Arab Emirates 2012. Directed by Gus Van Sant. With Matt Damon, Frances McDormand, John Krasinski. Corporate salesman Steve Butler (Damon) is forced to confront his environmental conscience when a protester (Krasinski) stands in the way of a lucrative deal he is brokering to drill for natural gas pockets in a small American town. Van Sants drama addresses questions about the complex moral and environmental issues of fracking (the controversial process used to obtain natural gas) but also uses it as an opportunity to look at the grassroots democracy of the rural community with only themselves to depend on.
7

The Gatekeepers (15)

1hr 40. Israel/France/Germany/Belguim 2012. Directed by Dror Moreh. With Ami Ayalon, Avi Dichter, Yuval Diskin, Carmi Gillon. In Hebrew with English subtitles This Oscar-nominated documentary lifts the curtain on the shadowy figures who run Israels secretive internal security service, Shin Bet. Six men who have all headed up the organisation appear on camera and discuss their involvement in the last forty years of Israeli history. The film is divided into seven segments which follow a loose chronological order, and looks at the escalating involvement of Shin Bet in events such as the Six Day War, the Occupation of Palestinian territories and targeted assassination. However, the real power to this film lies in the personal confessions and reflections of the men involved and the moral issues at play.
8

FROM FRIDAY 3 MAY

FROM FRIDAY 17 MAY

Im So Excited (TBC)
1hr 30. Spain 2013. Directed by Pedro Almodovar. With Javier Cmara, Pepa Charro, Cecilia Roth. In Spanish with English subtitles. Almodvars 19th film sees him returning to his more flamboyant comedy roots, and also reunites him with frequent collaborators Penelope Cruz and Antonio Banderas (in cameo roles). The films centers around a group of travellers and airline crew on board Peninsula Flight 2549 to Mexico City when a technical fault endangers their lives. As the pilots strive to find a solution, the flight attendants and chief steward try to forget their own personal problems and devote themselves to making the flight as enjoyable as possible for the passengers - in body and soul. Dont miss the special gala preview with live satellite Q&A with Pedro Almodvar on Tuesday 23 April.
9

Mud (12A)
2hrs 10. USA 2012. Directed by Jeff Nichols. With Matthew McConaughey, Tye Sheridan, Jacob Lofland, Reese Witherspoon . Matthew McConaughey had something of a career renaissance in 2012, leaving behind lazy romantic comedies, and receiving rave reviews for his turns in Magic Mike and Killer Joe. Mud sees him continuing with darker more challenging roles, as he plays an fugitive on the run who befriends two Arkansas teenage boys, who help him evade the law while he tries to reunite with his lover Juniper (Witherspoon). Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter) wrote and directed the coming-of-age tale, but had been developing the story since his student days, when he was inspired by Mark Twains classic novel Tom Sawyer.
10

FROM FRIDAY 17 MAY

FROM FRIDAY 24 MAY

In Danish with English subtitles. When the crew of a Danish cargo ship are hijacked by Somali pirates, the story unfolds following the dual narratives of the plight of the prisoners and the efforts of the negotiators in Copenhagen trying to facilitate their rescue. Writer/Director Tobias Lindholm is probably better known as a writer for hit Danish TV show Borgen, although he has also contributed his talents to last years The Hunt. A masterclass in building tension - Mark Adams, Screen Daily
11

HISTORY OF THE PHOENIX

Education
Our film education and heritage work engages with children, young people and the community throughout the year. Are you an educator? Please visit our website phoenixcinema.co.uk/ education to find out more about our great value workshops and termly screenings for both primary and secondary age pupils. Or email Tara Cleary via education@ phoenixcinema.co.uk for more information.

The Phoenix Cinema is one of the UKs oldest purpose-built, continuously operating cinemas. Beneath the vaulted ceiling which dates back to 1910, the history of film has been shared with millions of audience members. From silent films with live music through two world wars when newsreels were the only source of moving images that captured events overseas; from the clicking reels of 24 frames a second to the digital projection of today, the Phoenix has witnessed it all. The other unique aspect of the Phoenix Cinema is that since 1985 it has been a cinema of the community, run by a charitable trust for the community. Saved from the wreckers ball by the formation of The Phoenix Cinema Trust, it is a wholly independent single screen cinema showing the latest independent and foreign films and reinvesting its profits in education work and maintaining this historic building.
