As I am writing this article, it is the second day of Spring with the temperature outside being 30 Degrees.

But we know that Spring is coming and before the Ap ril 2013 end of April we will be seeing flowers blooming and trees budding. Jesus Cicero United many times reminded us of things that were to come through reminding us of Methodist Church the nature around us and how sure it was. It is that same sureness that gives P AST OR B yron Frit z us our Farmers Almanac and many of the wise old sayings from our grandP. O. Box 617 parents. Something else that is just as sure, is how in our human nature, we Cicero, IN. 46034 will soon begin to complain. Right now as soon as the temperature reaches above 60, and stays in that range, we will all talk about how wonderful it is to Pastor 1 begin to wear shorts, take off our shoes and feel the green grass beneath our feet. But when the Spring rains fall more than two days in a row, we will fall General News 2-7 back into complaining; when the temperature begins to climb into the 80s and stays there, we will begin to complain about how hot it is and will have Birthdays & completely forgotten about the cold of winter. You see, we have inherited our Anniversaries 4 ancestors disposition of complaining just like they did in the desert when 5 they didnt have enough water or food,. They got tired of eating manna; they Those Serving wanted real meat and then received quail for a whole month. Then they 6 started complaining about having the same meat every day. Where do you Prayer Requests think all this complaining comes from? Is it because we feel we deserve Youth 6 more, or because we do not have everything that we want? Is it because we set our desires too high and complain when we dont reach that goal? Have April Readings 7 you ever stopped to think about what is controlling your life, what truly makes you happy, no, not only happy but what brings you Joy? For some people Just for Kids 10 they have never really felt Joy; they try to live in the moment of happiness, Calendar 11 but happiness goes away as quickly as it comes. There is no guarantee of happiness because it is connected to events and things that are not permanent. The only things that are truly sure are that the seasons of the year, such as Spring, are coming and a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. Once we have this relationship, we find Joy; however it has nothing to do with possessions or status, but everything to do with a daily walk with God. God says, I will never leave you or forsake you, so we are to have an unspeakable Joy. Re Joyce in the Lord always and again I say rejoice. The world is not going to change; we will have cold weather, hot weather, wet weather and dry weather, especially in Indiana, so learn to look to God for the signs of life and rejoice.

I recently ran across an old e-mail that I had received which I thought was fitting for the Easter season and because Pastor Byron has been encouraging us to read the Bible each day - in fact reading through the whole Bible during the year. (The readings for each day in April can be found on another page in this newsletter.) Perhaps you may have even received this e-mail. Ever wonder what would happen if we treated our Bible like we treat our cell phone? What if we carried it around in our purses or pockets? What if we flipped through it several times a day? What if we turned back to go get it if we forgot it? What if we used it to receive messages from the text? What if we treated it like we couldn't live without it? What if we gave it to kids as gifts? What if we used it when we travelled? What is we used it in case of emergency? Is this something to make you go.....hmm.....where is my Bible?

Oh, and one more thing. Unlike our cell phones, we don't have to worry about our Bible being disconnected because Jesus already paid the bill. Makes you stop and think, "where are my priorities?" And no dropped calls! When Jesus died on the cross, He was thinking of you!
~Dennis Schrumpf, Church Council Chair & Lay Leader

Acts 20:28 So guard yourselves and Gods people. Feed and shepherd Gods flockHis church , purchased with His own bloodover which the Holy Spirit has appointed you as elders. Our new shepherding program has begun. We have been blessed to have folks willing to serve in this way. Christ wants all of us to know we are special, that He cares for each of us. This is just one way that Cicero UMC will accomplish this. It is time to thank those who have agreed to be shepherds. It has been a blessing to speak with each of you and experience the Love of God in your voices and caring spirits. We also began a new welcome center program at the same time and again are encouraged by the folks who have dedicated their time to watch over this each Sunday. It is important to say thank you for your willingness to serve in such a way. This is a way for strangers to find comfort and become friends.

April Scouting News

We would like to thank all of you who may have contributed to our recent Scouting for Food drive. Your donation was greatly appreciated and will remain in the Cicero community to assist those in need. In April our Troop will be participating in the Del-Mi District Spring Camporee. One of the highlights of this camporee is learning who the Troop has elected to the Order of the Arrow (OA), which is the Brotherhood of Scout Honor Campers. To be eligible to be considered for the OA a Scout has to meet certain requirements. Then, his fellow Scouts must decide which Scouts best demonstrate those requirements in their daily lives and Scouting activities. Those are the Scouts who are then elected to the OA. A Scout is not allowed to campaign on their own behalf or on the behalf of another Scout. Each Scout must decide on their own who to vote for. The OA election is by secret ballot and only the Scoutmaster and OA election team know the results. Our election was held in late January so we are eager to learn who those OA candidates are. Thank you for your support of Scouting at Cicero United Methodist Church. ~Dennis Schrumpf, Chartered Partner Representative

This month in youth group we learned about standing up in faith against the wrongs in life. From Easter having been purposely put in a position to help others, to Peter stepping onto the water in faith. We learned all things are possible with God and through Him we can change the world. We are also exploring how other people explain Jesus' miracles away and how we can explain them with God's very own word. Coming up we will be learning skits and dramas in preparation to lead Sunday service someday in the near future. If you have a teen, or know a teen in 5th grade or higher, we would love to have them. We start our worship at 2pm every Sunday. All are welcome. ~Joe Green, Youth Leader

A Word of Wisdom You cannot stay where you are and go with God. You cannot continue doing things your way and accomplish Gods purpose in His ways. Your thinking cannot come close to Gods thoughts. Energy Saving Tips from http://www.wikihow.com/Save-Energy-in-Your Home

1. Turn down the thermostat. Turning your thermostat down by just 1 degree can reduce your energy consumption by over 5%. You wont even notice the difference in room temperature. On the same note, dont heat rooms when you are not using them. 2. Decrease the hot water temperature. Your hot water thermostat neednt be higher than 60 degrees centigrade (140 degrees Fahrenheit). Any higher and you will only be mixing it with cold water to cool it back down for use. 3. Wash economically. Only use the washing machine when you have collected a full load. If you must wash a partial load, use the economy or half load setting. Also, modern washers work just as effectively at 40 degrees Centigrade (100 F) as they do at 60 (140 F), but the reduced temperature will make a difference in terms of energy used. Tumble dryers use up a huge amount of energy. If possible, hang your closes on a line instead. This is better for your clothes as well. 4. Reuse water coming out of the tap that would drain otherwise. When you turn on the tap to wait for hot water, for example, put a container under the tap until the water is warm enough and then use the

water in the container to water plants or use for other purposes. The heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing.
~Blaise Pascal

Keep on Believing
Through major life challenges, Christian singer-songwriter Jeremy Camp has learned to walk by faith
and cling to his hope in Christ. While he was growing up, Camps family (which includes a brother with Down Syndrome) struggled with poverty. When Camp was just 23, his wife of several months died of cancer. The first song Camp wrote after her death was the chart-topper I Still believe. In the chorus he sings: I still believe in Your faithfulness I still believe in Your truth I still believe in Your holy word Even when I dont see, I still believe Camp says trusting in God during lifes valleys takes lots of courage. You can say, All right, Lord, I dont get it, but Im going to trust you. and go to the only One [who] offers life and hope and peace and joy. Sometimes-controversial preacher Henry Ward Beecher (1813-1887) once received a letter containing two words: April Fool. Immediately, Beecher wrote to a New York newspaper, describing the missive. I have received many a letter where a man forgot to sign his name. he wrote. This is the first time I ever knew of a writer signing his name and forgetting to write a letter. Raindrops tumble to the ground cause God directs them to come down. Little seeds sprout from the ground cause God directs them up, not down. Tender roots sink in the ground cause God directs them to go down. Pretty flowers will be found where raindrops tumbled to the ground.

A Prayer Give us, O Lord, a steadfast heart Which no unworthy affection may drag downwards; Give us an unconquered heart, Which no tribulation can wear out; Give us an upright heart, Which no unworthy purpose may tempt aside. Bestow upon us also, O Lord our God, Understanding to know you, Diligence to seek you, wisdom to find you; And a faithfulness that may finally embrace you; Through Jesus Christ or Lord.

Something Greater As long as we live, our self-absorption and our insecurity will walk together, holding hands and swinging them back and forth like two little girls on their way to a pretend playground they can never find. Human nature dictates that most often we will be as insecure as we are self-absorbed. The best possible way to keep from getting sucked into the superficial narcissistic mentality that money, possessions and sensuality can satisfy and secure us is to deliberately give ourselves to something much greater . . . [Christ] showed us that giving, rather than getting, is the means to receiving . . . To find yourself, your true self, you must lose yourself in something larger.

St. Thomas Legacy

The Sunday after Easter is known as St. Thomas Sunday because the gospel reading is always about the disciple who was absent when Jesus first appeared after rising. Doubting Thomas refused to believe the Resurrection until he touched Jesus wounds. A week later, he had that opportunity. Jesus told Thomas, Do not doubt but believe. (John 20:27, NRSV).
The following quotes examine the role of doubt and faith in the Christian life: Doubt is not the opposite of faith; it is one element of faith. ~Paul Tillich There lives more faith in honest doubt, believe me, than in half the creeds. ~Alfred Lord Tennyson Doubt is a pain too lonely to know that faith is his twin brother. ~Kahlil Gibran My hosanna is born of a furnace of doubt. ~Fyodor Dostoesky
