JUSTIFICATION FOR SONGS Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent (Victor Hugo, 1880). Based on the quote above, we can see that using songs in ESL classroom is about to introduce the students to the new environment which they cannot get in usual learning process. The quote explains that music can explain the thing that we cannot see, hear or say in words but at the same time it is really important to us. Using songs in the ESL classroom are very relevant because the students will motivate and learn in a fun and productive way. A gigantic benefit is the fact that using music can lift the atmosphere in class, bring in a boost of energy and zest for life that captures the children's attention and motivates them in their quest to learn English. Along with the music, melody and rhythm actions can be found to go with the song. Integrating music and actions makes the students lesson appeal to wider learning styles. Actions may be used with any song and not just with obvious 'action songs' like Head Shoulders Knees and Toes. This immediately pushes the boat out to reach more pupils by encompassing a variety of learning styles in class. Kinesthetic and tactile learners will latch on to using their bodies to the music while Auditory learners are in their element listening. Visual learners see others making the actions and can look at story pictures or vocabulary flashcards relating to the song. Everybody is happy, except for the tiny minority of people who do not like music! It is explained well why we chose Head Shoulders Knees and Toes as a song to teach in ESL classroom. This song is a great and popular action song for kids and yet good for parts of the body vocabulary too. As we can see, this Head Shoulders Knees and Toes requires the students to make their action regarding on the lyrics. For example, the students will know where is their head when they touch it while singing and the different actions for different parts of the body. Furthermore, this song is really short and easy to memorize. We all know how songs can stick in our heads and this is exactly what we want for our English language learners. Regarding on the pedagogical principles, the students must have some

background knowledge of what they are doing so with this song the students already know their parts of the body and it is kind of to sharpen their memory and vocabulary. The second song that we chose is Five Little Monkeys that has a good phonics to be learnt, work possible with rhyming line endings. Using this song, the students will practice saying the lines in rhythm. In the next lesson out comes the song again for a short portion of the lesson. This time you might have a session saying the words in the rhythm of the music then repeat this and add in the actions you put together in the last lesson. Finish playing the song once with children doing the actions and attempting to join in where we can. The students can learn phonetics while they are singing this song. This song has a clear rhyme pattern to do some phonetics work on particular phonemes. For example, the students will be able to pronounce bed, head and said in a right way which are these different three words has a d ending sound. It is necessary that pupils know or at least have some idea of content of the text. This is to ensure that their schematic knowledge will be drawn upon when comprehending the text or doing the tasks. Constructivism will enable pupils to build new knowledge and concepts based on existing knowledge or schema that they have. The students have to be assisted by the teacher to acquire new knowledge and solve problems through pupil-centred active learning and the teacher teach them through this song. When it comes to the learning colours, the song that related and suitable to be learnt by the students is I Can Sing A Rainbow. This song is really good and relevant for students exposed to the colours. Why rainbow? Because the students will get high interest when they learn about their surrounding and it is based on their basic and prior knowledge. The texts should have a connection with students here and now learning context. It would be motivating for students to study the literature which is currently being discussed in their society, particularly when that literature has been interpreted through other media, such as movies or musicals. Experiencing the here -and-now literature would help students understand that literature is neither useless nor faraway, and that literature is part of our life. So it will motivate the students to sing and learn that song and at the same time this song can be confidence building. Using songs for ESL is a way for children to listen and practice English in a group, joining in when they can

without being singled out, and gradually achieving more with each listening. A huge boost in confidence can be gained from this, which percolates through to all learning. In that case, the students will actively involve in the literary class. The forth song that we chose is In My House. This song clearly has their grammar values that can make the students practice of there is and there are. Songs represent a good teaching tool through which students can learn and practice certain grammar structures in a non-threatening way. Generally, grammar has been considered as a grueling unavoidable part of any language learning. The songs with grammar value present authentic language with the authentic grammar interwoven. It is also bear the pleasure aspect in a form of music and enjoyable punch line in jokes which help memorize the words and grammar. In this way the grammar students are exposed to remember better than in the form of simple course book exercises. This song has a possible grammar points can be found in them and especially good for practicing different verb forms along with the grammatical tenses. By using this In My House song, the students will be able to differentiate between the plural nouns and singular nouns because every line in this song tells about plural and singular nouns. We have discussed that the song that we chose have their pedagogical principles that has to be followed because nowadays many English songs are hopeless for ESL learners. Most English songs have too many words as they are written for native speakers so young ESL beginners have no hope of being able to sing along. Furthermore, many popular songs have inappropriate content for the classroom at least in many cultures. As we choose the suitable songs, we have to aware with the sensitivity of students culture and background. Songs based on values have to be incorporated in teaching and learning in order to impart the importance of good values for the wholesome development of individuals. And the most important while using suitable songs for ESL students is the song must not be biased towards boys or girls but it must be impartial (neutral / unbiased). When the songs are selected, ensure that they will match with the age and maturity of the pupils.
