Experiment 3

D-C Power Supply

2012-13

In this experiment, we will assemble and study the performance of a d-c power supply, which consists of a power transformer with a 912V (rms) secondary winding with a centre tap, two rectifier diodes (1N4007), a shunt capacitor filter and a voltage regulator (IC 7805). A 33 5W resistor will be used as the load (R) for the power supply, and a 1 resistor will be used for observing the diode current waveform. The complete circuit diagram of the d-c power supply is given in Fig. 3.1. The assembly will be done step by step as described below, and the assembled circuit tested and studied after every step. 1N4007 diodes + A-C Mains + vs + vs D1 D2 C 1 +

Fig. 3.1 Circuit Diagram of Complete D-C Power Supply 1. Measure the amplitude of the a-c voltage vs across each half of the centre-tapped secondary winding of the power transformer with the CRO. This gives the value of Vm for the d-c power supply. 2. Test the given diodes with the Component Tester, and connect diode D1 to obtain a half-wave rectifier. 3. Observe and sketch the waveform of the rectifier output voltage vu. Verify that the peak of the output voltage is almost equal to Vm. 4. Connect the second diode D2 to obtain a full-wave rectifier and repeat step 3. 5. Connect a 100F electrolytic capacitor, paying attention to its polarity, as C. This gives an unregulated d-c power supply. Connect the 33 5W resistor as the load (R) for the unregulated power supply 6. Display and sketch the waveform of the voltage vu and the voltage iu across the 1 resistor. Note down the values of the peak-to-peak ripple voltage Vr and the peak diode current Ip as measured from the CRO. 7. Repeat step 6 with (i) C = 470F and (ii) C = 1000F. Compare the values of Vr and Ip obtained with the three values of C, and comment the effects of varying C. 8. Connect the regulator IC 7805 to complete the d-c power supply, connecting the 33 5W resistor now as the load (R) for the regulated power supply. Display and sketch the waveform of the unregulated voltage vu and the regulated output voltage vo for each of the three values of C used earlier, and comment on the effects of varying C.
