Louis Barruol from Chteau de Saint Cosme is one of the stars of the Rhne and hands down one of our greatest Rhne discoveries. Saint Cosme is located in the heart of the Gigondas appellation and is one of the oldest estates in the region. Louis is the 14th generation of winemakers and took over from his father in 1995. He knocked off all fining, filtering and excessive use of sulphites and the result has been a series of accolades and recognition as one of the best winemakers in Gigondas. Saint Cosme has been one of our favourite French wineries for a while now and their 2011 Ctes du Rhne was awarded Best import in our Best Of 2012 edition. Louis and the rest of the Saint Cosme team will be joining us again at this years Vintage Cellars International Wine Fair. Everyone has a favourite style of red wine and our tasting panel is no exception. However, no matter what your favourite red is its hard to overlook a great Barossa Shiraz. Our panel pick in this edition is made for us by the team at St Hallett, one of Barossas best, and is a deliciously juicy single vineyard Shiraz with classic dark fruit flavours. From the spectacular 2010 vintage, its an expressive yet elegant wine. You can read more about the St Hallett and our other panel picks on page 4 and 5. Although red wines and winter go hand in hand theres always an occasion for sparkling and white wines too. We have a broad selection of great white and sparkling wines worthy of a celebration. One to mention is the delicious Ruffino Prosecco DOC. Its dry, clean and has a zesty finish guaranteed to please. Cheers,

ere thrilled to present this single vineyard Shiraz from one of the finest vintages experienced in recent times and made exclusively for us by one of Barossas best. For just a touch over six decades now St Hallett has forged a reputation for crafting full flavoured, textural wines made entirely from Barossa fruit, sourced from some of the regions oldest vineyards. The Sonntag vineyard, located in the southern district of the Barossa Valley and highly regarded, is traditionally tended by multi-generational Barossa grape growers and depicted by its deep alluvial red loam soil profile. Ideal growing conditions, driven by warm days and cool nights, prevailed throughout the summer and autumn and produced highly expressive and compact, yet elegant wines. As per the St Hallett philosophy, minimal intervention was employed in the winery letting the fruit speak for itself. Extended maturation took place in a combination of new and old American oak barriques to compliment the pure Barossa fruit. Classic dark fruits, liquorice and hints of chocolate prevail and theres a touch of black pepper spice for interest. The perfectly integrated, savoury tannins and a persistent finish make this a complete package, sure to please.

Innovative winemaker Justin Lane is the man behind some the most exciting, idiosyncratic and distinctive set of wines weve stumbled across in recent times. Based in McLaren Vale, the portfolio of wines is based around letters, each depicting symbol and meaning. T in this case stands for Tarot, its relevance here to the transformation of a 100+ year old Grenache vineyard from which this wine is made. The addition of Shiraz and Tempranillo to this medium bodied blend works by adding depth, structure and spice to the appealing, deliciously soft and round Grenache. Produced in small quantities so be quick and pick this wine up today!

The phrase over delivering is one that tends to be used and abused quite often, but its certainly not the case when it comes to this Yarra Valley gem. Innocent Bystander is a specialised group of winemakers and viticulturists lead by accredited winemaker and Yarra Valley identity, Steve Flamsteed. They seek identity by producing high quality, small batch cool climate wines. Utilising a blend of traditional techniques, including wild yeast fermentation, barrel fermentation and lees stirring, this medium weight Chardonnay shows hints of creamy and nutty complexity while maintaining the pristine citrus and white nectarine freshness associated with Yarra Valley Chardonnay.

Bremerton vintners boast a proud and significant history in the much unheralded Langhorne Creek region of South Australia. The Bremer River flood plains rich soil, combined with fresh cool evening breezes from Lake Alexandrina, provide a micro climate of mild to warm summer days and cool evenings. Its perfect for long ripening of grapes and produces intense and sought after cool climate flavours. The result is a delicious and seamless expression of rich and spicy dark fruits with well supported elegant oak and gentle tannin structure.

A big McLaren Vale Shiraz that has all the weight and impact we've come to expect, but it retains elegance and poise. if you're after value then this Shiraz from a notable region does the trick.

This Shiraz is on the money for a well-made wine offering regional and varietal charm. it shows rhubarb, plum and blackberry fruit, with a fine grained texture and juiciness in the finish.

weve long been fans of Tash Mooney's boutique family winery, Fox Gordon. Pronounced flavours of blackcurrant, vanilla and softer spices dominate the palate for a long and elegant finish.

Gemtrees Uncut Shiraz showcases the best of McLaren Vale's regional characters. Smooth and velvety, offering layers of black cherry, spice and pepper flavours that melt seamlessly together on the refined finish.

ts nearly 200 years since the first Shiraz vines were planted in Australian soil and bless their juicy heart, weve loved the grapes they produce ever since. Shiraz is the great Aussie red grape, the safest bet in Australian red wine. Warm-climate, cool-climate, coastal or inland Shiraz just seems to grow well and tastes good as a result. Better still, Shiraz reflects the place its grown better than most grape varieties do. Grown in warm climates like the Barossa Valley, Langhorne Creek and McLaren Vale and Shiraz often tastes wonderfully sweet and fleshy, plump and juiced up with yummy goodness. Grown in cool areas like the Grampians and the Yarra Valley and it can be spicy, savoury, even a little bit autumnal. Its not so much a matter of preference from there, as occasion. Nothing quite beats a gloriously gutsy, warm-climate Shiraz on a cold winters night, especially (in my case) if Im drinking it while sitting and watching the footy. But those lighter, fresher, spicier tones of a cool climate Shiraz really come to life when youre supping at a dish that would be overwhelmed by overtly-rich flavours. Same same, but beautifully different. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

Created using selected parcels from Bendigo and the Grampians, the Chalambar epitomizes Seppelt's long heritage and expertise with old Victorian vineyards. It has interesting spicy and meaty notes, a hint of mint and dark berry fruits.

In Clare Valley Shiraz fruit flavours get ripe without being heavy. Pikes Shiraz shows this quality with ripe dark fruit and hints of chocolate, liquorice and spice. The palate is soft and balanced with a backbone of dusty tannins.

Tim Kirks Hilltops Shiraz is an affordable and worthy everyday alternative to his flagship Shiraz Viognier. A savoury medium-bodied red with peppery red cherry fruit flavours and great Rhne-like qualities.

The palate is opulently intense and mouth coating with a unique combination of flavour and grace, as you would expect from a McLaren Vale Shiraz. Chapel Hill harnesses the power of terroir and really delivers with this wine.

Sourced from ancient vineyards in Barossa's northern Ebenezer sub-region, the Bishop shows lovely fruitcake intensity. The palate is finely crafted with rich plum flavours of dark stone fruit and spicy, tight cedar oak.

Dense black centre with a deep garnet rim. The nose shows lashings of dark plums and chocolate with hints of mint. A wine of great dignity, its structure is superbly taut, with intense depth of fruit reined in by the firm tannins.

This modestly priced Coonawarra Cabernet showcases classic varietal and regional characteristics of red cherry, dark berry and mint flavours. Subtle toasty oak and gentle tannins with excellent length.

From one of the coolest sites in McLaren Vale and well suited to production of Cabernet Sauvignon. Its powerful and full-bodied with plenty of regional and varietal characters. Rich blackcurrant and mint flavours with a fine tannin finish.

An important part of the Jim Barry range, The Cover Drive has layers of mint, white pepper and a hint of liquorice on the nose. The palate has lovely soft tannins and shows a touch of plum balanced with subtle French oak.

Petaluma White Label Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2010

A lot of time and care has gone into the making of this wine, and it really shows. Careful selection of fruit from the world famous Terra Rossa soil, long maceration and almost two years ageing in French oak barriques results in a smooth, velvety wine with rich, mouth-coating tannins that will reward several years of careful ageing. The wine exhibits classic Cabernet characteristics of black cherry, cassis, cedar, a touch of dark chocolate and a hint of blackcurrant leaf and mint. e need principles in life. Theres room for all manner of outlandish behaviour as long as were underpinned by firm, decent principles. Thats why we all need Cabernet Sauvignon; it is the principle of wine. Shiraz is the good time grape, Pinot Noir the perfumed seducer, but Cabernet is the firm footing we all need, the wine with the greatest staying power, the bones on which fleshier grapes can sit. This latter point of course is why blends of Cabernet Sauvignon and Shiraz, particularly in Australia, and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot are peak red wine styles. Shiraz and Merlot are the sex, if you must think that way; Cabernet Sauvignon is the commitment. Combine the two and youre in the running for a long and happy love affair with red wine. Cabernet has even been known to team well with the easy-going Sangiovese; Cabernet gives casual wine styles a seriousness, a weightiness, a drama. Thats precisely why peak regions for Cabernet Sauvignon - Margaret River, Coonawarra, the Clare Valley and the best vineyards of the Barossa Valley are so prized. Every life, every cellar and every wine rack needs a healthy selection of Cabernet and its blends. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

Woodlands make wines that rank amongst the best in Margaret River. Elegant and medium bodied with flavours of ripe mulberry, tobacco leaf, cedar and spice. Youthful, fine and focussed with strong echoes of Bordeaux.

veryone wants Pinot Noir. Everywhere I go its the constant refrain. Gone are the days when Pinots lighter flavour was scoffed at; now its lighter flavour is celebrated. It doesnt compete with food, but complements it. It seems perfect with lunch and at home with dinner. Cherried, sappy, spicy, ridiculously perfumed, satiny on the tongue, seductive and at times a touch sordid are common traits of Pinot Noirs personality. Its all very grown up. How about this: Pinot Noir has become commensurately cooler the more here and in New Zealand we have embraced its cool climate desires. Grow Pinot Noir in the cool Yarra Valley, Mornington Peninsula, south island of New Zealand or indeed its home in Burgundy - rather than in warmer regions - and it gives itself up deliciously. From Waipara Hills comes a Pinot that highlights varietal character without lacking in flavour. These guys continue to impress us! Bright and fleshy with a savoury edge, it offers superb value and should not be missed.

Winemaker Dimitri says the move to organic and biodynamic winemaking has helped Champy achieve balance and typicity in each wine. This Pinot is clean and bright with a full ensemble of Burgundy fruits on a solid foundation.

This is a more voluptuous take on Pinot with high toasted oak, caramel flavours sitting with all the usual black fruit and cherry characters. There's still excellent varietal charm, but it comes in a full flavoured and balanced package.

The last few vintages of Cloudy Bay Pinot Noir see this wine step out of the shadows of its famous Sauvignon Blanc sibling. It has an inviting nose of strawberries and smoky spice with a soft palate thats integrated with fine, silky tannins.

hange isnt merely as good as a holiday; change is what a holiday is. Tempranillo from Spain (if you like Shiraz, youll like this), Gamay from Beaujolais (if you like Aussie Pinot Noir), softhearted Merlot from our beloved Barossa (instead of Cabernet and Shiraz) and a McLaren Vale take on the great French/Spanish and Italian, respectively, grapes of Grenache and Sangiovese. There is a feeling, in life as much as in wine, that the tried and true is the cornerstone of life, but that difference and a sense of dare is vital to keeping things fresh. Although technically part of Burgundy, the region of Beaujolais dances to its own tune. Made from Gamay, and from one of the region's most famous producers, this wine is bright with raspberry and cherry notes and finishes with the softest tannins.

Grant Burge pioneered Merlot in the Barossa Valley, planting the first of the variety at his Hillcot vineyard in 1982. This is a stylish and obvious varietal example with mouth-filling plum, cassis and raspberry flavours. One of Australias best Merlots.

A real hidden gem from this switched-on producer based in the McLaren Vale. This wine has the full range; earth, cinnamon spice, blueberry, cherry and plum. Mark Faber, Vintage Cellars Wynyard

Coriole was one of a few wineries paving the way for Sangiovese in Australia. Cherry and raspberry fruit, with a bevy of spice and a smidge of vanilla. Years of experience with this classic Italian grape make Coriole's example one of the best in the country.

Glorioso Reserva Rioja 2007

This is 100% Tempranillo and great value for genuine, honest Rioja. In Australia a 2007 vintage red may be considered an aged release, but after spending three years in oak and one year in bottle, as per Reserva regulations, this wine is just a baby. It has a very enticing nose of sweet berries, a hint of leather and freshly ground coffee. Flavours of rich and complex dark fruits are balanced by well integrated oak and spice. The silky tannins and long finish just add to its appeal.

BLENDS

ne of the great shames of Australian wine appreciation - if I can be so presumptuous to suggest - is that blends of different varieties are often seen as lesser wines than those made with a single grape type. Poppycock. Its a bit like saying that a team of champion players cant outdo a team of champions, or that in selecting a great team youd pick all the same kinds of player. Great teams require attack and defence, discipline and flare. Its the same with wine. The right grapes, blended to make the wine taste better rather than for mere convenience, is often the best way to create the best wine. The southern Rhne Valley - where lots of different varieties are often used to create the regions reds - is a fine example. CAMPBELL MATTINSON

This delightful blend of indigenous Portuguese varieties, is one of our best-selling imports and a much-loved favourite. It's savoury and earthy with flavours of raspberry, dried herbs and liquorice. A handy red to have at the ready.

This traditional Australian blend provides a full bodied and rich palate with velvety tannins. Subtle oak brings depth of flavour and structure to the dark berry fruits - including mulberry, plum and a touch of mint and savoury spice.

Made from old Barossa bush vines, Teusner's Joshua is two thirds Grenache with splashes of Mataro adding earthy complexity, while Shiraz fills out the structure. Savour the vibrancy of spice and red berry fruit without the intrusion of oak.

A classy red from an iconic producer. Aromas of briary plums, currants and subtle notes of star anise. The plush palate has layers of dark fruit supported by a spine of acidity and finegrained, silky tannins.

LEnclave des Papes Ctes du Rhne 2011

Great Ctes du Rhne red wines, typified by this latest release from LEnclave des Papes, hold a special place in the hearts of many wine enthusiasts. Characteristically medium bodied in style, these wines express themselves through their pronounced yet subtle spectrum of red and dark berry fruits, backed up with intriguing rustic notes of earth, wild herbs and charcuterie. A blend thats typically dominated by Grenache with percentages of Shiraz and Mouvedre to compliment and contrast. This example sees Shiraz take the lead role contributing to a soft and silky mouth-feel. All is topped off in typical savoury fashion and with a very moorish length. 12

irra Wirra has a long and proud history as one of McLaren Vales most famous wineries. It was established by local cricketer and eccentric, Robert Wigley, who made it one of the best wine producing estates in the state. After his death the winery was run into despair and abandoned before it was purchased by Greg and Roger Trott in 1969. The two cousins rebuilt the winery and once again made Wirra Wirra a McLaren Vale icon known for producing intense and beautifully crafted red wines.

Plenty to like about this fullbodied McLaren Vale Shiraz. Dense black fruit and dark chocolate flavours with ripe tannins woven throughout the length of the palate. A wine with medium-term cellaring written all over it.

One of Wirra Wirra's flagship wines and deservedly so. Lovely rich cassis and blackcurrant fruits line the mouth providing a long and persistent palate with excellent cellaring potential.

Crafted from Rapaura Springs' family estate vineyards, this wine exhibits distinct individual and varietal characteristics. With classic tropical notes as well as citrus and fresh herbs on the palate it combines complexity and structure with clean cut acidity, providing an exceptional premium style at an affordable price point.

The hot summers and cold winters of Waihopai Valley in Marlborough provide ideal conditions for growing high quality Sauvignon Blanc. The small portion of barrel ferment makes all the difference in taking this wine to the next level above the realms of other Sauv Blancs. It's elegant, but boasts surprising power.

Hand tended from vine to bottle, the nose offers lifted ripe tropical fruit and citrus flavours followed by a finely tuned palate of guava and stone fruit flavours. A wonderfully expressive wine that finishes long, dry and refreshing.

From one of the oldest winemaking families in Pouilly sur Loire, the Mollet-Maudry family, comes a fresh style of Sancerre. It has aromas of melon and guava and follows through with a palate of texture and zing. Absolutely delicious!

White peach and nectarine are given a squeeze of grapefruit, then secondary flavours of tight grained oak and cream integrate on the palate. The winemaking influences have been treated with restraint and the resulting wine is balanced and modern.

Located in the heart of Burgundy, the village of Lugny is surrounded by great Chardonnay vineyards. A perfectly balanced wine with aromas of subtle citrus and hazelnut. The palate has a rich stonefruit complexity with an elegant, fresh finish.

Some appealing funk on the nose with distinctive barrel ferment characters. On the palate delicate yeasty notes mingle with white peach, melon and nuts while the oak is spicy yet subtle. Poised and elegant.

Fashion forward, this is the new generation of Chardonnay. Bright, pristine and lean. The palate is taut with intensity, honing beautiful tension between a fine veneer of oak used to frame the fruit. The finish is long and lingering.

For a few years now, Kooyong's Sandro Mosele has produced this Ballewindi Chardonnay exclusively for us, and he is certainly yet to disappoint! Sandro uses whole bunches and barrel fermenting before letting the wine spend 10 months in French oak. There's peach, subtle notes of cream and honeydew melon on the nose. The palate balances ripe stone fruit flavours with hints of citrus and a creamy texture. It's delicate yet rounded, and is a leading light for modern Aussie Chardonnay. 15

Built with ripe, vibrant fruit, this Gris shows traces of apricot and honey. It's a spicy, clean style with consistent weight and length across the palate. From the team at Catalina Sounds and more zippy than some, this is a wine that's hard to put down.

Chardonnay adds texture to the fruity and herbaceous characters of Semillon and Sauvignon Blanc in this well balanced blend. Passionfruit and citrus peel aromas with a touch of tropical fruit sweetness on the finish.

Assemble an antipasto platter and serve with this vivacious dry white. Delightful aromas and flavours of fresh apple, pear and lemon shot through with crisp and cleansing acidity amount to a perfect match for alfresco luncheons.

In classic Alsatian style, this Pinot Gris exhibits floral aromatics, followed by a subtle touch of toasted bread. Rich and well balanced on the palate, this is a wine with great persistence and finishing with clean acidity and a touch of residual sweetness.

This exciting wine has nashi pear and rose petal with hints of roasted almonds on the nose with vanilla pod and pear on the palate. Its another amazing Pinot Gris coming out of New Zealand, with texture and balance to die for!

From a single vineyard planted in the 1880s, this Riesling is quintessentially Eden Valley, with fragrant lemon and lime blossom aromas. The elegant palate is driven by pure fruit that has great balance, line and length.

This is a more poised and delicate Riesling than we've seen in the past few years. Pear and sweet grapefruit open the show, followed by fresh lime and notes of talc. Racy acid helps the fruit flavours linger.

Consistently one of the best SSB blends, with a LTC (Little Touch of Chardonnay) adding generous weight. Brilliantly constructed using selected components fermented in oak to add texture and loads of sophistication.

Chalkboard Frankland River Riesling 2012

Made in partnership with some of Australias and the worlds great wineries, the Chalkboard Series brings together famous regions and skilful winemakers under one label. Each wine is carefully selected to represent true varietal and regional style. This Riesling from Frankland River is made by the gurus at Frankland Estate and was our winner of Best Value in the 2012 Best Of Corporate edition. The nose is fresh and zippy with intense lime, apple and mineral aromas. Its zesty with bags of citrusy flavours, a pure, linear palate and best of all it punches well above its weight.

The lifted biscuit and strawberry and cream characters of Pinot Noir contribute to the palate richness, while the citrussy Chardonnay adds fruit structure and fine acidity. Bottle fermentation and aging on lees give it complexity and lovely nutty flavours.

In the midst of a Prosecco revolution, there is simply no better choice than the latest shipment of Ruffino, which really shone in a recent blind tasting. This delicately sparkling, gently scented Italian specialty makes for perfect drinking with or without food. It's brimming with the typical freshness and vibrancy of floral, citrus and green apple, while delicate honeyed and exotic notes creep in adding further appeal. Its dry, clean and the zesty finish is guaranteed to please, as does the value!

It was only a matter of time before this famous Sauvignon Blanc producer took advantage of New Zealands cool climate to make a refreshing sparkler. An elegant 100% Chardonnay cuvee with lively bubbles, hints of peach and a crisp finish.

This pinnacle sparkling wine from Seppelt has lifted citrus aromas complimented by complex nuances of brioche and biscuit. The mouthfeel is long and creamy with lemon sorbet, green apple and nutty flavours. Perfect for any occasion.

Ed Carr has spent the last 15 years on a quest to produce world class sparkling. Mission accomplished! Vanilla, nougat and exotic spices on the nose, followed by a palate bursting with lychee, truffle and cinnamon flavours. A complex and elegant wine.

Piper-Heidsieck Brut Champagne NV

No list of great Champagne houses would be complete without Piper-Heidsieck. It consistently over-delivers on quality, thanks to the precision of Chef de Cave, Regis Camus, winner of no less than 7 International Wine Challenge - Sparkling Winemaker of the Year honours. The medium bodied house style captures all the great hallmarks of purity and finesse associated with great Champagne. Gentle toasty notes support a framework of fresh flowers, juicy apple and citrus, that finishes squeaky clean. 19

each

The Gimonnet family has been cultivating vines in Champagne since 1750. Floral in style with plenty of character, the palate starts off soft and pillowy before revealing a sharp mousse in the background and a good acid backbone.

A stunning display of refined winemaking from the house that strives for finesse, balance and elegance above all else. The incredibly fine bead draws your attention, with tight and persistent bubbles. A great Champagne and our Best Sparkling winner in 2012.

This is a subtle and delicate blend evenly split between Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier. The reserved 2004 vintage is classical in style with fleshy palate weight, fruity depth and impeccable balance.

Gordon Graham Black Bottle Scotch Whisky is a unique blended whisky that contains all seven Islay Malts. Established by the Grahams, a family of tea blenders back in 1879, it offers a distinctive taste when married together with Speyside, Highland, Lowland Malts and Grain Whiskies. Its rich and golden in colour and offers a fresh and fruity nose with hints of peat you would expect of an Islay based whisky. The finish has that smoky warm feeling.

It has been almost 200 years since a copper still was operating in London. That was until Prudence was commissioned by Sipsmith to begin distilling a Barley Vodka and a London Dry Gin back in 2009, out of Hammersmith, London. The Sipsmith Gin is made from carefully sourced botanicals from around the globe such as Juniper berries from Macedonia, Orange Peels from Seville and Cinnamon Bark from Madagascar. The Gin is dry with a zesty, citrus finish. Its smooth enough for a Martini, but also rich and balanced which makes it perfect for a Gin & Tonic. Distilled in copper for purity, the Sipsmith Barley Vodka is made from the best spirit from the heart of the run. It has a clean, almost creamy mouth feel, slightly sweet palate with buttery barley and peppery vanilla. The palate is sweet throughout with a nutty, lightly peppery finish.
