1. Over 443,000 people die each year in the United States from diseases caused by tobacco 2. There is no risk-free level of secondhand smoke exposure. Even brief exposure can be dangerous. 3. An estimated 88 million nonsmokers in the United States are exposed to secondhand smoke 4. 90% of current smokers began smoking as a youth 5. Exposure to secondhand smoke causes about 150,000 to 300,000 new cases of bronchitis and pneumonia annually among children 18 months or younger 6. Secondhand smoke exposure causes an estimated 3,400 lung cancer deaths annually among nonsmoking adults in the U.S. 7. All tobacco products-cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobaccocontain nicotine 8. Nicotine chemically changes the brain, causing addiction 9. Nicotine is a drug that is as addictive as cocaine and heroin 10. Nicotine increases your heart rate and blood pressure, which can lead to increased risk of heart attack 11. Cigarette smoke has more than 4,000 chemicals 12. 50 of those chemicals are known to cause cancer

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) is designed to extend affordable, quality health care to millions of additional Americans regardless of age, income, or pre-existing conditions and shift the health care system to one that prioritizes prevention. First 5 Madera County, Madera County Public Health Department and Darin M. Camarena Health centers will host a symposium on May 24th from 12-2PM at the Department of Social Services building (700 E. Yosemite Ave.) to facilitate discussion amongst community members to learn more about the ACA and establish partnerships to ensure compliance for all of Madera County. Another symposium will be held at Cru Winery on May 23rd 5:30-7PM (20146 Road 21) for physicians only. For more information about the symposium, please contact First 5 Madera County at 661-5155.
