St. Anselm
Anselms father was rich and stubborn. He wanted Anselm to spend his life looking after the family estates in the Piedmont, a region in northwestern Italy. However, Anselm wanted to be a monk. When he was 22 years old, Anselm entered the Benedictine Abbey in Normandy, a region in France. Only three years after his ordination, he was elected prior. He treated the monks in his care with great kindness. Anselm became known in England, and in 1093 he was named Archbishop of Canterbury. It was a difficult position for a man who was already 60 years old and in poor health. The king of England, William Rufus, wanted to control Anselms decisions. Though Anselm was a gentle and humble man, he would not yield an inch to the king. The other bishops were afraid, so Anselm was forced to stand alone. Though he longed for the peace and quiet of his monastery, he fought endless legal battles and was even sent into exile for a while. Anselm spoke out against injustices. He said that slavery was wrong. Through his efforts, a law was passed making the sale of human beings illegal in England. He cared for the poor people in his diocese. He also wrote hundreds of letters giving spiritual direction to people who asked him for guidance. When William Rufus died, henry I became king. As first he struggled with Anselm, just as Rufus had. But in time, Henry came to respect Anselm so much that when the king traveled he left the bishop in charge of the country. Anselm found time to write books and essays about the Christian life. Because his work was so rich in meaning, he has been given the title of doctor (teacher) of the church. St. Anselm, pray for us.
