The legendary Junkers Ju 52/3m was born in 1929 as a single engine transport for Bolivian airline LAB. The aircraft design got the well known three-engine recognition very quickly, and was produced for Lufthansa and other airlines during the thirties. The Ju 52 was acquired by the new German Luftwaffe in1934. The original purpose was for crew training, but because the Luftwaffe had its new Do 11 bombers delayed, the Ju 52 was fitted with full bomb equipment and more than 2/3 of the existing bomber squadrons used these "auxiliary bombers". They reached the frontline in 1936 as a part of the Condor legion in the Spanish civil war. In the late 30's when the Luftwaffe had enough modern bombers, the Ju 52s were assigned transport duties. The first Luftwaffe transport group was established in 1937 and when WW II started the Luftwaffe had 552 Ju 52/3ms in four groups. The Ju 52 served over all fronts in large and growing amounts. They became famous during the airborne operations in Norway, against Dutch forts in May 1940, and also in the most impressive German airborne operation, the invasion of Crete in May 1941 where 271 Ju 52s were lost. They became very useful later in the war on the Russian front as well as in North Africa. The time of German victories ended in late 1942 and for the rest of the war the Ju 52, nicknamed Tante Ju, were very often employed in supplying the surrounded German armies and had high losses. The Ju 52 remained to be the Luftwaffes main transport aircraft until end of the war, although production was terminated in 1944. Altogether 4,835 Ju 52 were built in many versions. Production continued after the war in France (AAC.1 Toucan) and in Spain (C-352-L). Ju 52s were used by many air forces and airlines after the war, the French AAC.1 saw combat again in Indochina in the 50's. Many surviving Ante Ju's around the world are still in flying condition and remain a veritable flying legend.
