'Glass blew up'

SUV crashes through window of convenience store; customer treated

News-Messenger reports

Two Vietnam veterans on their way to the veterans' clinic in Ann Arbor got an unexpected surprise about 8:30 Monday morning when an SUV came crashing through a convenience store's front window. "There was a big explosion. Glass just blew up everywhere," William Scott said.

Fremont police officers at the scene said William K. Lytle, 21, 1829 Buckland Ave., was driving a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer that became stuck on a gas island at the Friendship Sunoco, 914 W. State St. When Lytle pressed on the accelerator to free the vehicle, the peddle became stuck, sending Lytle Network Newspapers inside the store at the pop section. Lytle declined to comment. "I wanted to run but I couldn't run," said Homer B. Shepard, who was standing near the window deciding between pop and water. "My adrenaline took off and left me." When Scott heard the crash he hit the floor and looked up and saw his friend Shepard trembling. Emergency crews treated Shepard at the scene but he was not transported.

OFFICER GEOFFREY STULTS shovels pieces of glass from a window that was broken Monday morning when a driver crashed into the front of the Friendship Sunoco store at 914 W. State St.

One clerk said she'd never witnessed this type of accident. "We were screaming until we saw what happened," Alissa Abdoo said. Lytle was in the vehicle by himself and was not injured. Officers said he'll be charged with failure to control a vehicle on private property. Two-liter Coke products were spilled and strewn over the front of the store where they mixed with broken bits of glass. The store remained open.
