James Johnson Comp II Sect 2 Assignment 1 3/5/13 Attention All Speeders Most people speed and they shouldnt.

Its not always a good choice because one they dont always know the condition of the roads and two it could cause some major problems. Some of those major problems could be wrecks, deaths, injuries, hospital visits or severe road rage incidents. Hopefully people would follow the speed limit if they knew the severity of what speeding could really cause. Who would want the thought that they caused a wreck or possibly could have killed someone? When you first look at the billboard your eyes are immediately dawn to the giant words Days in hospital bed. The reason for picking gray is that gray is considered to very gloomy or dreary. Speeding, if you look at it, could be very gloomy. The slogan for the billboard is Slower is better, and then under the slogan you see Elm Grove Police. The Elm Grove Police Department developed a way to promote the concept Slower is better. They placed Interactive billboards by roads where speeding was a big issue. They are triggered by speeds above 25 mph. So thats showing that there is reasoning behind the billboard being placed there. There have been questions on if the billboards message gets through to most drivers and psychologically when a driver sees his or hers speed limit they usually slow down. Well depending on how fast the driver is going the answer should be made soon on if the billboards message got through.

The billboard in Milwaukee takes a different approach in reminding drivers to stay within speed limits. The billboard displays ethos, pathos, and logos by showing the many days that you could spend in a hospital. That number could persuade someone to really think about how fast they drive and if they really want to spend that many days in the hospital. It could also play at pathos that seeing how the police department decided to put this up, maybe they have a way of watching who speeds and if the sign isnt a big enough warning then the police will have a way to get the person. You can say that it plays around with peoples feelings and emotions. Either they slow down and stay safe for the rest of the day and hopefully the rest of their life or they can speed up and be in pain for quite a while. Theres much ethos behind this billboard. The main purpose behind it is to have fewer wrecks and deaths and to have more drivers practice caution and safety. Isnt every states job to make sure that their drivers are safe or try their best to make sure that everyone is safe? The billboard does a good job at showing the safety that a person needs to take while driving and also the serious consequences someone could face while on the road or speeding. It holds the driver accountable and makes them aware of the consequences of speeding. The reason behind this sign is to get people to think about their driving and the speed limit. Youre driving and along the road you see this giant billboard. While looking at the billboard you notice that theres this random number displayed on it. What you dont know is that number is the speed the car in front of you was going. You notice that beside the number there is a saying Days in hospital. Well that person going 46 will

understand what the billboard meant by because the number of days in the hospital was how fast they were driving. One way that you could look at the billboard is like an either-or fallacy. Either you can follow the speed limit or you could spend some weeks in a hospital bed, choose your poison. Also it could be used as a scare tactic. This is the speed limit if you dont follow it then youre going to be in the hospital. One bad thing about the sign is how small the actual speed limit is displayed. When driving down a street you would like to know the speed that you should be going so that you wont get stopped by the police. If someone is really going forty-five and the speed limit is twenty-five they may not notice what the actual speed limit is. The ad is a good way to get the message around. It plays around with peoples emotions, which a speed limit should do. People speed from time to time because they either feel like they are in a rush or they are already late. If youre late, just be late. If more billboards were around like the one show then people would probably think twice before they speed drivers could actually think about how severe speeding could be for them and others around them.
