This script originated from north eastern Brahmi script in 10th century, in which
the cute-angular style has remained preserved. The prime region where this script
has been in vogue is the ancient Mithila region in north Bihar of India. In this
script historical records carved on numerous idols, copper plates and stone slabs
of post 10th century are available . Although Devanagari script and thereafter
16th century onwards Kaithi script has also remained prevalent in this region but
most of the Samskrit manuscripts and Tantric Yantras written on palm-leaf and the
paper made of cotton are available. Those books of the scriptures are available in
Tirahuta also known as Mithilakshar or Maithili script till the middle of 20th
century.
Presently this script is known to very few scholars; today rare scholars are
available who are able to do transcription of ancient manuscript.
Even today the manuscript collected from north Bihar are kept and
preserved in museums and personal preservation of the people interested in antics
and ancient scriptures & culture, which have not been published so far.
Transcription of these manuscripts for publication and detailed description to
understand ancient Indian literature & cultures is much desired.
For making descriptive catalogue of manuscripts send us the digital copy of 1st
