DoubIe Workshop Day: Sat., ApriI 18th
Fingerplay Boot Camp & Caregiver Circus
With ECE/StoryteIIer Kevin MacKenzie

Who is Kevin MacKenzie?
Kevin MacKenzie is an Early Childhood Educator and professional storyteller who is passionate about child
development. He has worked in early childhood; in schools, in adult literacy, with "at risk¨ youth, and he trains
performers and storytellers in the art of being courageous and playful. His workshops are lively, hands-on events that
leave you inspired, refreshed and motivated! Kevin is the Author of the popular "Fingersplay!¨ DVD of original action
rhymes and activities.
Visit his website, www.storiesbykevin.com for more information.

The Workshops:
1 FingerpIay Boot Camp - 9:00AM to 12:00PM
Quite often, we get bored of the "Five Littles¨ (witches, pumpkins, sausages etc). Children do too. When our bag
of tricks stops growing, we stagnate, and the children feel it. Rethink fingerplays, and infuse energy into your
group times. Fingerplay Boot Camp! fills your bag of tricks to overflowing. Find new ways to connect with kids.

Benefits of attending this workshop:
Beef up your fingerplay repertoire!
Turn busy, noisy groups into focussed, enthusiastic groups.
Learn the secrets of creating fantastic fingerplays.
Recharge your enthusiasm for group times and rediscover your playful nature.

Who Needs FingerpIays?
This workshop is open to parents, preschool and daycare staff, teachers,
teaching assistants, literacy workers, library staff, volunteers who work
with children and anyone who would like to boost their fingerplay skills.

But Why?
Language is alive. Language moves. Language, especially in young children, is physical.
Fingerplays, action rhymes, chants, and body language games are essential to growth.
These special gifts are a way to honour children's strong need to learn concepts and skills through motion,
imitation, unity, creation and joy.
Fingerplays glue the children's attention to the activities, to your circle time and to you.
Fingerplays provide a flow between other storytime activities ÷ a break, and a necessary vehicle for focusing
wiggles and group contagion.

DoubIe Workshop Day: Sat., ApriI 18th
Fingerplay Boot Camp & Caregiver Circus
With ECE/StoryteIIer Kevin MacKenzie
2 Caregiver Circus - 1:00 PM to 4:00 PM

Background:
PIay is a central pillar of early childhood development. Children
learn concepts, skills, ways of being (and not being), and about
their relationship to their environment - who they are, through the
discovery process called play. Play is exploration, and exploration
prepares the learner for literacy and life.

We are taught the value of play in development, and we
understand that play is crucial to growth. Play is the first langauge
of the early childhood environment and curriculum.

Caregiver Circus is about caregivers, parents, librarians, and
anyone who works or plays with children - speaking the language
of play - fluently. Ìt is about knowing play from the inside out, not
merely from reading about how imporant it is for children, but
knowing what it feels like, by speaking the language - by playing.

This training aIIows you to experience pIay in ways that wiII:
Open your eyes to play by giving you a child's eye view.
Make you better at observing children's play.
Give you insight into how to program in order to nourish play and learning.
Give you insights into your own relationship with play, and goals for expanding your creative skills.
Show you that play is not as different for adults as you may think.
Demonstrate the value of adult play to lesson planning, relationships with co-workers and parents, stress
management and, job and life satisfaction.

Participants in Kevin's workshops have said:
... it was (an) extremely valuable experience, and Ì am so glad Ì attended. Ìt re-affirmed my confidence and
encouraged much creativity. Ì learned so much and look forward to putting these skills to use.
