FineReader Engine 8.1 supports the PDF/A ISO Standard. (ISO 19005-1: Document management - Electronic document file format for long-term preservation - Part 1) This standard is based on PDF 1.4, imposes some restrictions regarding the use of colour, fonts, annotations and other elements to optimise the documents for archiving.

Today the PDF file format is already used for archiving purposes. But the variety of versions and features of the format cannot guarantee that every PDF file can be read or even opened in 20 years time. Some important element could be missing (like fonts), or the documents could contain programming code that might not be supported in the future. PDF/A is a prospective archiving format recommended as a standard for long-term preservation of page-oriented documents. The format will be used for reliable data exchange in national archives but also in enterprise and government environments. Developers can create applications that control PDF conversion precisely by specifying which PDF data is used for recognition and can influence the speed of PDF processing. FineReader Engines intelligent conversion scheme can also automate the process.

FineReader Engine 8.1 offers additional control over PDF conversion. Selectable criteria include: - whether the text should be recognised or simply imported from an input PDF file, - whether text should be compared with the original PDF and corrected or not.

Full-page CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) Export to PDF and RTF

ABBYY FineReader Engine 8.1 enables conversion of documents in Chinese (both simplified and traditional), Japanese and Korean into PDF and RTF with vertical text and complex layout retention. Ability to further support additional applications in Asian regions. FineReader Engine 8.1 now altogether recognizes 190 OCR languages. Ability to further support additional applications in Middle East regions. As a result FineReader Engine 8.1 offers three pre-defined processing modes (Fast, Balanced, Accurate/Default) that easily allow developers to select the quality and speed ratio that suits their processing requirements. EAN 13 supplemental remains the standard in the publishing industry for encoding ISBN numbers on books. Enables a potential increase in recognition accuracy and efficiency by allowing customers to work with dictionaries customised for their specific industry or application.

New Thai OCR language Support

New Hebrew OCR Language Support

A new Balanced Processing Mode which strikes a balance between recognition speed and accuracy.

Extended barcode support for EAN 13 supplemental barcode types. In addition to internal FineReader Engine dictionary types (standard, user, and regular-expression-based dictionaries), additional support for external dictionaries created by using rules of integrators and third-party developers.

Engine processing settings can be stored together with parameters of the host application.

The "single .ini file profiles" simplify integration and maintenance.
