Introduction

Windows let in light and gives a beautiful view of surrounding in a house. It also provides ventilation in the house. Windows are generally comprised of a sill, sash, head, jamb, frame and panes. The head is the piece that runs horizontally across the top while the sill is the part that runs horizontally across the bottom. Jambs run vertically up the sides of the window. The sill, head and jambs combine to form the frame, which may be made from various materials, and the sash, in turn, frames the panes. There are a number of window designs available, including awning, casement, picture, fixed and more, according to The Home Depot.com (2011). The important component of windows is the glass because it is transparent so that people could easily view the surroundings. According to Windowhelper.com (2013), the common materials used for the frame of the windows are wood, aluminium, vinyl, and fiberglass. Glass for windows throws open several advantages. It has a classy, elegant look that can greatly enhance the ambience. Coloured glass can also be matched to be in sync with the rest of the interiors. At a functional level, it is hassle-free to clean & maintain. Also, since it is not affected by moisture or scratches, it remains durable for long periods of time. Glass for windows cuts the amount of heat entering the building and thus helps save on the energy costs of the building. The group aims to substitute polymethyl methacrylate to the glass in the windows in houses. Polymethyl methacrylate is lightweight and it also inhibits the characteristics of glass. this material is normally used in making aquariums so it can inferred that it is durable and with quality also (Britannica Encyclopedia, 2013). It is significant that the glass be substituted for the house windows in order for a new material to be used and to give more options. Polymethyl methacrylate is more transparent from glass so the view in the house is clearer. Glass is commonly used material in many objects. Unfortunately, The price of glass is quite high especially when the glass is thick or with quality. When the glass used is thicker, it becomes less clear (polymersciencecenter.com, 2012).
