Welcome
Thank you for your interest in the 2012 issue of ASETs Annual
Salary Survey. The survey is always one of the most popular
resources at the ASET booth at tradeshows and career fairs.
Users report that the surveys real-world snapshot of actual
income levels is a valuable complement to the salary information
routinely collected by government and industry.
THANKS
ASET emphasizes the substantial value of this report to its
many internal and external audiences and therefore it is
with sincere gratitude that we thank the ASET membership
for participating each year. Your involvement in this process
has helped establish ASET as a true professional organization that produces information which is widely used and
respected.
As an incentive to complete the survey, a number of valuable
prizes were awarded at random to survey respondents. These
prizes were kindly provided by the sponsors below, to whom
ASET extends its thanks:

The ASET Salary Survey is just one example of the many ways
that the Association, along with the technicians and technologists who comprise its membership, seeks to continually
strengthen the value and importance of its role as an advocate
for the technology profession in Alberta.
Found across the province of Alberta and the Canadian territories, our members represent a wide scope of technology fields,
as shown in the bar chart. Over its 49 year history, ASET has
grown to become the second largest such association in Canada.

R.E.T.
Not to be confused with field of work [left], we also asked members to specify the
industry they or their firm primarily operate. The industries identified were created
using definitions compiled from Statistics Canada, Alberta Economic Development,
and other professional associations.
P.Tech(Eng.)
Among all respondents, members span the fields of applied science, engineering,
and information technologies. Although some fields are very strongly represented,
the relative proportions are similar each year. In some circles, field is otherwise
known as the members discipline.

3 Year Trends
Respondents specified their years of technical experience (in their reported field
of employment), as well as a more broad grouping called employment level.
Consult the Glossary of Terms on page 19 for more detail. Looking at ranges of years of experience,
we can see some indication of the types of roles technicians and technologists may play as they
gain experience.
The majority of respondents are C.E.T. employees with 5-14 years of technical experience. Comparing
the total income for this main demographic, we can see trends across fields of work. Representation
can affect reliability so please consider the number of entries when examining the data.

Region
The majority of respondents continue to be based in either Edmonton or Calgary (approx. 65%)
with a larger percentage of those based in Edmonton. There was a significant shift in responses
here: Edmonton lists 854 reporting in 2012 vs 582 reporting in 2011. This did not translate into similar increase in rates of response from those based in Calgary (679 reporting in 2012 vs 572 in 2011).
In most cases, however, reporting rates remained fairly steady from all other regions.
Employees in Fort McMurray continue to report the highest average total income of all
respondents who work in Alberta.
