Black day for ‘Comer as production

stops at Ormonde Brick
Candidate calls on council to use local brick in local authority housing

Workers at Ormonde Brick in
Castlecomer were devastated at the
announcement on Wednesday that the
production of bricks at the factory was to
stop for the foreseeable future.
This was the stark but inevitable news
that was somewhat expected by
employees as they have not worked at the
plant since Christmas when it closed for
production for a five month period.
It is understood that there is an over-
supply of brick in storage at the factory
yard and not much demand for the
supply. This is being given as the reason
for the decision to cease production at the
plant for ‘an indefinite period of time’.
The decision will affect 42 employees
who are currently on lay-off at the
Ormonde Plant although the company
will continue to trade, with normal sales
and dispatch functions.
Employees have been informed of the
decision by management and the
implications of this indefinite cessation of
production for redundancies and
remaining employment at Ormonde will
be discussed with employee
representatives and union officials over
the coming weeks.
A statement from the company to the
Kilkenny Advertiser said, “ The decision
to suspend production operations
indefinitely is taken with great regret but
is now seen as unavoidable. Management
at Ormonde Brick acknowledges the
efforts and co-operation of employees
throughout the difficult trading period
which has prevailed in recent years.”
The company was unavailable for
interview since the announcement,
however, people on the ground in
Castlecomer have been downbeat about
the announcement.
Martin Carroll, independent candidate
in the local elections said that this news
has confirmed what many people knew in
Castlecomer. He called for Roadstone, the
owner of Ormonde Brick to be fair to the
workers when working out a redundancy

Kilkenny brand is vital to the growth of our city

Farmers are suffering this
week. Each week there
appears to be a different
category of people who are
'suffering' as a result of cuts in
the economy.
Glanbia has cut its milk
price again leading to protests
outside the offices in Kilkenny
and farmers are at their wits
end trying to make ends
meet.... joining everyone else!
However, we are an
agricultural country - we are
renowned for our top quality
dairy produce, meat produce,
and crops. We have a large
proportion of our land-mass
devoted to agriculture. Ireland
is seen as the 'Emerald Isle'
where 'fresh' and 'home-
grown' and' home-made' are
key words and top sellers.
What are we going to do if we
don’t have this sales pitch
anymore? This is part of the
Ireland 'brand' as such. If we
lose this branding - what do we
have left? One of the dearest
countries in the European
Union.... that's certainly not
going to help in bringing
tourists to our recession-
ridden country and we are so
heavily reliant on tourism. We
seem to be killing each other
off here!
I've said it before, Kilkenny
more than many places, is
reliant on tourism and
agriculture. If these two
industries fail on us - we are
left with very little as all else
depends on it.
The Government should be
seen to be nurturing these
industries and doing
everything in their power to
prevent their demise. Our local
government should also be
seeing that local farmers are
getting a fair deal wherever
possible and that tourism is
encouraged and sought-after in
an aggressive and competitive
manner. Farmers have been
managing well over recent
years as the EU has been
generous in subsidies and this
has kept many a small farmer
in business - however, these
subsidies are running out and
are not as readily available
anymore. Farmers are really
feeling it.
Times are changing for all
sectors and tourism which is
integral to our local economy
will suffer unless we become
very competitive. For example
our hotels should be looking at
reducing prices for people
visiting, not demanding that
people stay for two nights over
a weekend rather than just
one. This was an indulgence
that may have been permitted
in Celtic tiger years - but
intelligent operators should
realise that this is not the way
forward in the future.
We have seen some very
positive PR for our city over
the weekend with the Kilkenny
400 celebrations broadcast on
national television. This year
Kilkenny can benefit from this
celebration if it is handled
correctly. But the council
should be telling people that
this is taking place - outside of
Kilkenny!!! Locally we are all
going to go and see the parades
and the entertainment but the
people who don't live here
know nothing about it until it
happens which is ultimately
too late.
Kilkenny needs to be
marketed more than ever or
our medieval city will become
just another city and this
would be the saddest outcome
of all from this recession.
Kilkenny is special and we all
know it. As does everyone that
comes to visit but we have to
entice people here. It is a
terrible shame that there are
hoardings and concrete and
bollards and machinery
donning our parade area for
the Kilkenny 400 celebrations,
as this is what is featuring in
all the photographs of our
parade of the charter’s last
weekend - we won't forget how
long this project has taken in a
hurry as it will be recorded in
all of our photographs of the
event.
Another tourist season and
our castle is surrounded by
bollards. I don’t know how the
businesses on the street are
coping for the past year - it
couldn’t be good for business....
On another note, I thought it
was quite intelligent of Batt O'
Keeffe to announce that he is
not going to introduce college
fees - er, sorry, the decision on
college fees... prior to the Local

Kilkenny’s 400th birthday kicks off with zany antics

Our Marble City’s 400th
birthday was celebrated
with a weekend of
colourful and cultural
activities which took place
over the Easter Bank
Holiday weekend at the
castle.
The streets and castle
grounds were filled with
street theatre,
entertainment and live
performances, kicking off
the nine months of
celebrations in Kilkenny
that will mark the 400th
anniversary of Kilkenny's
city status .
Entitled Fever 400, last
Saturday's activities
marked 400 years to the
day from when King
James I, then King of
Ireland and son of the
infamous Mary Queen of
Scots, granted Kilkenny a
charter designating it a
city, a title much-coveted
by Kilkenny people today.
The Kilkenny Borough
Council made the decision
to host Kilkenny 400 a
number of years ago, a
decision now very timely
to boost tourism in the
area. Kilkenny's
commercial prosperity
was hugely increased
with additional trading
capabilities awarded
under city status in 1609. It
is hoped that the Kilkenny
400 Festival will have a
similar effect in providing
a welcome boost to the
area's tourism industry
today. In a bid to attract
visitors to Kilkenny in
celebration of the City
Charter, Kilkenny's many
historic buildings,
including Kilkenny Castle,
Rothe House and Gardens
and Kilkenny Design yard,
threw their doors open to
the public for free
admission.

history, having had a
charter-right to local
government since the
early 13th century and
this year celebrating 400
years since the granting
of our city's charter" says

Swimming pool closure is
disaster for swimming club

News that the Watershed
swimming pool may re-
open within two weeks is
not being greeted with
much optimism by
Kilkenny Swimming Club
which is livid that the
closure of the facility has
disrupted its swim team’s
training for over two
months.
In an open letter to the
Kilkenny County Council
and other interested
parties, chairperson Mary
McMorrow said that she
was “writing to the
nameless and faceless on
behalf of the 157 children
who are members of
Kilkenny Swimming Club
which has been brought to
its knees by the extended
closure of the Watershed
pool.”
Ms McMorrow said in
her letter that she “was
appealing on behalf of all
of the children for you to
stop

reaction to the pool’s
closure which has
seriously curtailed
Kilkenny’s competitive
swimmers since early this
year.
Problems with the tiles’
anti-slip surface has
forced management to
close the pool until the
tiles have been deemed
non-slip and safe once
again.
Ms McMorrow said,
“...to the members of our
club the closure is nothing
short of a disaster, we
have been brought to our
knees competitively,
financially, and socially.
“We are trying to keep
the teams swimming
between the Rivercourt
Hotel and Hotel Kilkenny,
but it is very difficult and
we have some very
promising swimmers who
have been severely
affected by the closure.
Perhaps worst of all is the
effect on the 28- strong ‘A
Squad’. These are
swimmers who have
dedicated themselves to
swimming for many years
now and it is for them that
the closure hurts the
most.
“Swimming is hugely
competitive at national
level and you cannot
afford to miss out on
months of training
without consequence.
This particular group
were travelling to Carlow
and New Ross for the first
seven weeks of the closure
(in anticipation originally
of a closure of four to six
weeks). Unfortunately,
both Carlow County
Council and New Ross
County Council could only
offer limited pool time
(but hang your head in
shame Kilkenny County
Council, at least they bent
over backwards to help us

training time has been

This ceremony is a proud
tradition of the Order of
Malta. The ceremony is in
keeping with the military
history of the Order of
Malta, a history dating back
to the Knights of St John in
1066. The historic setting of
Kilkenny Castle is very
fitting due to the long
history of the order and the
city’s current celebration.
This event is a truly historic
event for the Order of Malta
in Kilkenny as it is the first
time such an event has
organised in the city. The

privilege of the attendance
of the Knights and Dames
of the Sovereign Military
Hospitaller Order of St John

Gentleman Eddie is laid to rest

The passing of Eddie Mackey, 44 Michael
Street, Kilkenny, after a long illness
borne with great courage, brought
immense sorrow to his wife Mary and his
many friends and relations.
Typical of his lifestyle Eddie slipped
away into the next world quietly and
without fuss. He was a senior clerk with
An Post during his working life.
As a young man Eddie became
involved with the Legion of Mary and also
gave a lifetime of dedicated voluntary
service to the Credit Union movement,
serving for many years as both a
supervisor and a director of St Canice’s
Kilkenny Credit Union. In 1977 his great
work for the Credit Union was rewarded
when he was elected president. In his role
as president he oversaw the opening of
the new premises and the purchase of
their computerised system. So dedicated
was Eddie to the principles of the Credit
Union movement that he seldom if ever
missed a meeting, either monthly or
convention.
He was a lover of a game of cards and
enjoyed a crossword puzzle, especially a
cryptic puzzle. While not a fanatical
GAA follower he followed the fortunes of
the Black and Amber hurlers and took
great pride in the fact that his nephew
Brian McEvoy was an All-Star and county
player of great distinction.
When ill-health overtook him he spent
some time in Archersrath Nursing Home,
where he received the best of attention.
His last few days were spent in St Luke’s
Hospital, Kilkenny, where he passed away
in the excellent care of the nursing staff
there.

mayoral office was held by a small
group of councillors sometimes for
years on end, and there is no doubt
there was during those years a serious
fault with a system or council
membership that allowed that much
control by such a few people.
This ownership of the mayoralty by
the few was not something that was
confined to one party. How did Tynan,
Crotty and McGuinness manage to have
about 15 mayoralties among them in
those years? What type of members of
the corporation (as it was called then)
sat year after year and accepted this?
Despite the pact that now exists
between Fine Gael and Labour I do not
believe anyone would accept the same
mayor year after year after year in
present times.
The present and future is what
councillors must concentrate on. There
have been occasions lately where
particular councillors talked a lot about
fathers and grandfathers and uncles
who held mayoral office in the past. This
is of minor interest generally and
relevant only to the people involved, or
for their own family gatherings or even
a small bit of padding in an address, but
no more.
For public occasions it can be
overdone. It can look like an appeal for
affirmation of their importance based
on their forebears. Well it does not do
it........ nor does one’s forebears give
anyone the right to be a councillor or
mayor. It’s all about the present, and

O’ Hanrahan takes the plunge after years of

Joey O’ Hanrahan has
finally decided to follow his
heart and put himself
forward for election for
Kilkenny County Council
although he has a verbal
pre-nup promising his wife
that he would never do it!
With politics virtually
flowing through his veins,
Joey is no stranger to the
ups and downs of being a
public representative. His
father, Petie O’ Hanrahan
was a Fine Gael councillor
for Thomastown in his
time and politics was
always being discussed in
the O’ Hanrahan
household when Joey was
growing up.
“I’ve been involved in
Fine Gael since I can
remember. I was putting
up posters for my Dad
when I was in short
trousers. I have personally
been involved in the
Thomastown Fine Gael
branch for the past 20
years. I’ve been chairman
for the past three years
and I have been chair of
the district branch also.
Fine Gael has been a large
part of my life, as has
Thomastown and the
surrounding areas. I ‘ve
lived there for most of my
life bar a short period that
I spent in London when I
was training. It was always
in the back of my mind to
run for the council and I
was just waiting for the
right time. I think this is
the right time now. When

area. Joey is still hopeful
that Fine Gael can win at
least two seats, with his
hopes pinned on himself
securing one of those
seats.
“Currently Pat O’Neill is
the only sitting councillor
for Fine Gael, Willie
Barron and I are also
running for Fine Gael in
this area and we are
hopeful of gaining two
seats. There are only four
seats this year so one
person will be losing their
seat one way or the other
at least. I will be hoping
that I will be able to pull a
second seat for Fine Gael
but it is all to play for. We
are all canvassing our own
areas and hopefully it will

Joey was a jump jockey
for some years, though, his
occupation in farm

risky these days. He is a
well-known face in the
Thomastown area and
when he appears on the
doorsteps he is being
greeted favourably as a
familiar face. He maintains
an interest in the horses
and his daughter Joanne is
carrying on his interest.
However, even canvassing
takes second place if there
is a hurling match that his
son Robert is taking part
in and GAA is definitely
high on the list of priorities
in the O’Hanrahan
household.
“I would be familiar with
most people in my area as
I have been involved in the
GAA and the community
for a long time now. People
are positive to me on the
doorstep. I’m getting good
vibes and people are
happy to see a new face.
I’m getting lots of good
wishes and hopefully they
will transfer into votes,”
said Joey.

within the next two years.
She warned however that
big promises had been
made by government
before but had not been
delivered upon.
“The CSO recently
informed us that Ireland
has almost the lowest level
of broadband access in
Europe. This embarrassing
statistic is holding us back
from reaching our
enterprise potential.
“I have a concern about
the methodology used to
assess broadband
availability. The

problem in our electoral
area. We were promised

this is the case in my own

that is no way to run a
business in a rural
community. So I would
hope that the promised
broadband availability
means what it says.

happened and I am not too
confident that it will now.
Even if this wouldn’t have
brought new jobs in the
authority to the area, it
would certainly have had a
knock-on trade and these
jobs would have been for
small and medium-sized
businesses. I am hoping
that the Government will
not completely renege on
this decision and we will
see the authority out in
simply being held back by
the pathetic levels of
broadband available to
homes and businesses. We
live in an era when
broadband is necessary for
so many things – for
students, for businesses, to
pay bills – it is part of the
fabric of everyday life.
Those who are denied
access to broadband are at
a serious disadvantage.”
“I am calling on the
Government to ensure that
all houses, schools and
businesses in Kilkenny
have access to broadband
within the timeframe
promised. Our economic
recovery is dependent on
the availability of these
basic services.

Safety measures at
schools are also an issue
that Joey is particularly
worried about in
Thomastown.
“There is a new school
and no safety precautions
in place as there is some
problem with ownership of
land. The school needs a
pedestrian crossing,
ramps and lights which
would make the area
around the school safe for
children crossing the road
and coming and going
from school. It’s vital this
happens before there is an
accident.”
Joey is also very
insistent that there be a
community healthcare
centre located in
Thomastown.
“Currently the people of
Thomastown have to go to
Kilkenny to get their eyes
checked, x-rays carried out
or any other minor
medical procedure done. If
there was a health centre
in the area, this would not
be necessary. They could
just visit their local clinic
which would be a huge
advantage to the elderly
and those with small
children. This would also
improve on waiting list
problems being
experienced at St Luke’s
Hospital. We need a one-
stop-shop for health
services in the town,” he
said.

“It has got the go-ahead
but it is not open as of yet.
I am delighted as it will
keep people shopping in
our own area and it will
also create jobs for our
own area which is vital to
our community. If people
are coming to
Thomastown to shop, it
will also bring much-
needed knock-on trade for
our other local businesses
and this is what is needed
right now - business and
jobs.”
Farming is an area that
Joey is very familiar with
and he hears first-hand the
problems that the farming
community are
encountering in Kilkenny
every day of the week. He
understands their
concerns and he is hopeful
that once the economy
picks up things will also
pick up for farmers.
“Milk prices have never
been so low. Subsidies
have been cut and sheep
farmers are really
struggling. Farmers had
grown to depend on
subsidies and now they are
not getting them. This is a
large percentage of their
income cut in one fell
swoop. The future was
clear and farmers had
budgeted for a certain
income from subsidies but
all this has changed,
leaving them in a very
precarious position,” he
added.

Irish membership of the
European Union and of the
Eurozone is providing stability and
support for our country, even at
these very rocky economic times.
Mr Alyward said, “I want to be re-
elected to the European Parliament
so that I can go back to Brussels and
work with the European
Commission, EU Governments and
with fellow MEPs on putting in
place more EU programmes to help
in the economic recovery of our
country.
Irish companies are drawing
down over €1 million a week from
Europe to support projects that
promote new technologies.
Between January 2007 and
October 2008, 353 different Irish
projects secured over €83 million in
funding from the EU under this
framework programme. Many of
these successful applicants were
from the small and medium sized
enterprise sector.
“Within the last six months
alone, Fianna Fáil has organised
two key conferences in the
European Parliament in Brussels on
the issue of how best Irish
companies can draw down funding
for EU research and technology
projects. These conferences were
attended by over 300 Irish
companies alone.
“If we are to maintain jobs in our
country and secure new investment
into the Leinster region into the
future we must be to the forefront of
new cutting edge technologies.
“The European Investment Bank
in Luxembourg recently signed off
deals with three Irish banks which
will entail over €310 million being
provided to small and medium sized
enterprises in Ireland over the
coming weeks.
At the recent meeting of EU
leaders in Brussels on March 19 last,
an agreement was reached on the
terms of a new EU economic
stimulus package. This has resulted
in the European Union providing
€110 million to Ireland to build a
new electricity interconnector
between Ireland and Wales. This
will help to create jobs and protect
out future energy needs because we
will be able as a country to break
away from our dependence on gas.
Ireland will also benefit from a
new €165 million EU fund which the
EU has put aside to support new
wind energy projects and we will
also secure up to €30 million from
Europe to provide new broadband
facilities in rural Ireland.

opportunities to the Irish people
before and it is doing so again.

year’s Rhythm and Roots Festival
Recession busting festival rocks its way towards Kilkenny

Since 1998, the Guinness Kilkenny
Rhythm and Roots Festival has
attracted some of the finest names in
the Americana canon; acts like
Calexico, Giant Sand, Ryan Adams,
Alejandro Escovedo, Mark Eitzel, Guy
Clark, Ray La Montagne, Richmond
Fontaine, Rodney Crowell...the list is
very long, and these are but a few
names who have been drawn to the
magnet of the Marble City Mardi Gras
in the past.
Country, folk, blues, bluegrass,
rockabilly and cajun - all forms of what
we like to call Americana, are well
represented over the four days of the
May bank holiday weekend.
The best part about this festival
(besides the music!) is that the majority
of the events are free of charge making
it the perfect recession-busting festival
of the summer.
From midday to midnight audiences
meander through the medieval streets
sampling the huge range of music in the
30 plus venues, hosting over 30 acts
from Ireland, USA, Canada, UK and
Sweden and with over 80 ticketed and

It's hard to imagine that back in the
sixties Wales, and Cardiff in particular,
seemed like an exotic destination.
This was long before the arrival of low
cost flights and for most people the only
affordable way off the island of Ireland
was by ferry to Fishguard or Holyhead.
I was reminded of Cardiff over Easter.
Jimmy Rhatigan, leader of the singing
and poetic talent in the corner of
Cleeres, was missing for a few days,
although he did make it back for the
regular Monday night trad session.
“He's gone to Cardiff,” I was informed.
Then I remembered this was the bi-
annual trip by Freebooters Football
Club to Wales, a tradition that has been
going on since the fifties.
I was a regular at the old 'Comer Road
soccer grounds throughout my
secondary school days in the sixties and
the trips to Wales were big news in
those pre-recessionary times. This was
an era when the church still had huge
influence and I'm sure that soccer and
all it's followers would have been driven
from the country if the hierarchy had
found out what was going on.
Younger readers may find this hard to
believe, but any form of contraception
was banned in Ireland until 1979. Every
now and then there are black and white
clips on Reeling In The Years showing
Nell McCafferty, Mary Kenny and others
bringing condoms on the train from
Belfast, which was still a criminal
offence during the seventies. Little did
they know that the boys from
Freebooters were practising their own
form of family planning long before this,
although I don't think they waved their
purchases at the customs officers when
coming through Rosslare..
Kit bags would return from the Cardiff
trips stuffed with condoms and the odd
Playboy magazine for distribution
among eager soccer fans up at the
'Comer Road grounds on a Sunday
morning. Welsh sales statistics must
have shot through the roof every two
years when the boys in blue descended
on the chemist shops of Cardiff, looking
to stock up, camel-fashion, for the
following two years.
I wonder has anyone ever done a study
of family sizes in the sixties in
Kilkenny? My theory is that research
would show that while the GAA crowd
fathering much smaller families.
Maybe the GAA was right all along, that
soccer crowds were not to be trusted.
We had the hurlers and Gaelic
footballers doing their best to increase
the population of the country that had
been in decline since the Famine. What
were the soccer crowd doing? Picking
and choosing when to have children, all
compliments of Freebooters and their
trips to Cardiff. No it just wasn't good
enough - what was sauce for the soccer
goose was sauce for the GAA gander
who had to go and organise trips to
Australia and the States, just to give
their lads the same opportunities.
The soccer pitch on the 'Comer Road is
long gone, you can get condoms up in
Lidl or any cornershop and Playboy is in
most newsagents, if you could reach up
that high to get it. But the trips by
Freebooters to Cardiff still continue. I'm
looking forward to a full report from
Jimmy. I wonder is there anything to be
had in Cardiff that can't be bought here
at this stage. I doubt it, sure didn't we
even have our own lap-dancing club for
a while?
Overdue at the library.
I was walking along the quay, heading
towards the Canal Square to check out
the Kilkenny 400 celebrations on Easter
Saturday night.
The works on the square seemed to go
on forever, but they were miraculously
completed with hours to spare in time
for the celebrations.
I took a look at the works outside the
library, that seem to be taking just as
long. It looks like there's a new
wheelchair accessible ramp and railing
under construction. I don't know who
the contractor is, but it's been going on
for at least six months now and still
looks a long way off completion. War
and Peace, Ulysses and the complete
works of Cecilia Ahern were completed
in a shorter time.
Maybe they could introduce a penalty
system similar to that inside in the
library. Allow, say, two months for the
job and then a penalty for every overdue
week. The fine for an overdue book is 50
cent, I think, so if they put a €500 per
week penalty on the construction work
it would result in the work finishing
quickly or else there would be a tidy
sum in the library kitty.

round of the National
Hurling League takes place
this Sunday.
Usually the outcomes of
these encounters would fill
the GAA section of the
national papers on a
Monday, however with
Kilkenny and Tipperary
already through to the
final, the decisions that are
taken at the annual
congress in Cork are more
likely to dominate the
headlines. Saturday is the
day that Kilkenny man and
GAA president Nickey
Brennan, hands over the
batton to Cork man Christy
Cooney.
I'm sure Nickey will be
happy with his time in
charge. He will have his
critics just like any other
president who has gone
before him, but he will
know that goes with the
territory. Nickey might not
have had as many big
decisions to make as his
predecessors but he was a
man with a solid pair of
hands. His legacy will be
the restructuring of the
championship which
allowed Galway and
Antrim into Leinster along
with a new league format
which saw the country’s so-
called top eight in the same
division. The results of the
annual congress next
Saturday at Rochestown
Park Hotel will also be on
his CV. Three years might
not seem like a long time
but when you are expected
to be at every dog fight it
must seem like an eternity.
I'm sure he will be
delighted to finally have
some time for himself and
his family. I don't know if he
