Letter from Our Lieutenant Governor

Well hello there SDSU, My name is Amanda Spendlove (but most people just call me Spendlove) and Ill be serving at your Paradise Division Lieutenant Governor for this upcoming year! In case you didnt know, Circle K is broken down into different levels; the district level, the divisional level, and the club level. San Diego State is part of the California-NevadaHawaii district, as well as the Paradise Division. Paradise division encompasses schools from both the San Diego area and HAWAII. Well isnt that neat, and I get the wonderful opportunity to serve the clubs in this division as your lieutenant governor! This year, I hope to bring these clubs together despite our difference. I hope to foster community and friendships between the members of our division and help bring back some of the smaller clubs that have lost touch with us. Im really excited for this upcoming year, and I hope all of you are too. I have a lot of plans and goals, and I hope youre ready for them! Lots of Love, (Amanda) Spendlove <3

Kiwanis One Day Part One by Whitney Oleman April 6, 2013
Kiwanis One Day (part one!) was a great time! We worked with Kiwanis, Key Club, and Kids Against Hunger San Diego to package food to be delivered to villages in Guatemala. The food was entirely organic and vegetarian and pretty good. Some of us were in charge of placing the food into packages, others weighed the packages to ensure they contained the right amount of food, others sealed them, and all of us contributed to the decorating of the boxes. It was a wonderful event with amazing people and at the end of the day we could actually see the fruits of our labor. Alpha Project is an organization that works toward empowering communities by providing work, recovery and support to individuals who are motivated to change their lives and become self-sufficient. The Alpha Project has been in charge of the Winter Shelter since 1996. Although their main purpose is to provide shelter during the coldest months of the year, they also provide services that drive self-sufficiency. Meals and personal hygiene supplies, case management, medical and counseling services, employment assistance and housing assistance are all available. This winter, a large group of SDSU Circle K members, including myself, made Alpha Project one of their service events. We were to serve dinner to the homeless population of the Winter Shelter. Although we usually served at Embrace the Streets, going to Alpha Project was a good change of pace for us. The food line was very well organized by the regular volunteers at the Winter Shelter, and there was no want for more food by anyone who was served Relay for life is a 24 hour event that helps to raise money for the America Cancer Society so they can fund various cancer treatments and accessories. We repped some Circle K pride by fundraising the 3rd most out of all the groups, $1,200!!! Not only was this an amazing service event, but there was also some intense club bonding going on. This 24 hour event kept us busy with various club participation games (which we got 2nd in as a club!!), live music, and of course, large amounts of walking. Our club definitely became stronger from this event. We had a decent turn out this year with around 20 people total participating, but we can do better next year! Thanks to all that came and hope to see you next year! that night. Everyone was very grateful and accommodating and our group of SDSU Circle K members all left with a desire to return to the Winter Shelter and serve there once more. Hopefully we will be able to offer our services to Alpha Project more often in the future.

Alpha Project by Nia Hilton March 24, 2013 Hannahs House by Jessica Marin April 14, 2013
Out of all the services Ive attended, Hannahs House has been the best. At Hannahs House we were able to paint and help make a difference! I was able to embrace the little kid inside of me. Our first task was to cut bear and turtle stencils. There was only one pair of scissors so we all had to wait our turn. When it was my turn, I realized that cutting out a perfect turtle was actually a bit harder than I thought. When we finally finished cutting, we were led outside to the parking lot where we were instructed to paint turtles and bears on the parking spots. I took time perfecting my turtles. I drew flowers, dots, hearts, and even wrote words such as love on a few of them. My turtles came out as a mix of girly and psychedelic since the main colors I used were turquoise, pink, orange, yellow, and dark blue. After we finished painting turtles outside, our next task was to paint flowers on the walls in the inside of the building. Although our service was supposed to end at midday, we stayed past that time and continued to paint!

Hay Fever Play by Hilario Moncado April 14, 2013
"HAY FEVER!?, what I dont have that!" said no one ever! That is because Hay Fever was a play that our very own Martin Quach deigned a set for. This comedy set during the great depression in England and focused on a wealthy family that had issues with one another rather than financial problems. Going with Circle K peeps made this British comedy that much funnier with traits that we can all relate to and scenes that were filled with laughter and bewilderment. At the end we saw Martin, complimented him, and congratulated him in his great efforts put into the set and how wonderful it was! "It was like we were really there!" says Lisa K. It was a great time with good company!

Man Hunt by Andrew Tran April 21, 2013

As night time was approaching, each member of Circle K, as well as new faces, prepared for a night of fun and action. Three rounds were played, and with each round, new hunters were picked. Throughout the three rounds, the hunters pursued their victims viciously, tracking down their prey and denying them from entering the safe zone. In the first round, Andrew Tran was the only survivor, being the only one to make it to Echo Rocks, as the hunters were able to hunt down the others. In the second round, the intensity grew, as the round lasted longer and the safe zone being a patch of grass near the EBA building was more difficult to get to. Although that was the case, a group of survivors made it while others whom did not make it, valiantly tried. In the third and final round, the hunters were now accustomed to how the game works and were more alert than ever. The hunters guarded the safe zone with their life as many of the hunted tried to make it into the safe zone from all different angles but were unsuccessful. There were no survivors in the third round as the hunters walked away with a victory. Overall, the night was fun and successful! This will not be the last of the Hunters and The Hunted! Standing outside of East Commons at 3pm sharp on Saturday, April 27th were Yvonne Velasco and Jordan Takeuchi looking sleeker than the Secret Cookie Service. All dressed up in streamlined suits with envelopes in hand, they were prepared for what would become an unforgettable event. Members from the Wong Dynasty, Hun Daisy Assassins, Hunesian Hawks, and Lucky Crickets all came out to support their teams in the first ever Circle K Scavenger Hunt. What started off as a friendly race soon became an intense marathon as members from the different families sprinted across campus to various locations such as the Turtle Pond, the Starbucks on College Avenue, the Business Services building (that youve probably never been to either), and Graffiti Valley to finish it off. After almost two hours of nonstop running to the indicated locations and searching for the next clue, the Lucky Crickets caught up to the Hun Daisy Assassins lead and came out on top as the winners of the scavenger hunt (chirp chirp!). Special thanks again to Yvonne and Jordan for making this all possible!

A Farewell from the Family Heads
I remember our first family social at Tapioca Express. It was a tad awkward at first over boba and tea, but things only got better from there. We went on to win the first Family Competition San Diego Scavenger Hunt, foreshadowing a long-lasting family unity and greatness. We braved the halls of the Haunted Hotel with our allied Lucky Cricket family, and came together to carve out a bad-ass family pumpkin. We broke bread with our Cricket Allies, giving thanks for our long-lasting alliance; and made our own assassin village out of gingerbread, frosting, and candy. We gathered forces to come support our fellow Hun Daisy in his singing exploits that made Hunisian Hawks fall from the sky in awe and the Wong Dynasty bow down in humbleness. We studied and trained our hearts out until the setting sun, to bring honor to our family, ancestors, and cow on the battlefield of finals. We touched the heavens jumping on the giant trampolines of Skyzone, and skated on ice until our legs could take no more. All throughout these adventures, having many family dinners that would give the voracious Cricket appetite a run for their money. I am so proud of the dedication these assassins have shown to making our family what it is today. I cannot imagine the year without them there to make me laugh over their ridiculous antics, from impressive photo bombing and family picture taking, to the random body rolling and the memorable conversations we have come to share. They are quite a unique, talented, humorous, and exceedingly caring group of individuals that I have truly enjoyed getting to know. They are all filled to the brim with potential. I look forward to seeing what they accomplish after the year is up and they have left the family nest to begin their own battles without me there to watch over them. What a bittersweet day that will be Love, HDA Momma

Congratulations on being the Family Competition Winners!!!!

Hunesian Hawks

The superior Hunesian Hawks of the great San Diegan circle K have been soaring high throughout the semester. Beginning as fledglings to the Hawk Clan we have all done what we can to be there for each other and share in some fun times. Our family has been enjoying the doughy goodness of a few cooking hang outs, first having Gigi make up some amazing curry early on in the semester and then having her, Jessica, and Spendlove lead us in some baking of goodies. It was heartwarming to see the family join together to bake a gentlemanly cake for the family head Scott to show their celebration of his birthday on April 1st and giving signed wings to always show that Hawks fly high! It was amazing to see one of the hawks, Martin, demonstrate his passion for theatre and set design as the club went together to see his play Haw Fever and now our very own Amanda has stepped up and taken the position of Lieutenant Governor for Paradise Division. School is hard and everyone gets caught up in the work at times, but everyone also has done their best to be there and show their support for each other. Everyone should be proud of the friends they make and the difference they make for others. KA-KAW

I'm very proud of my Wong Dynasty family. When the year started, I was freaking out about how I was going to keep up with everyone and be a good father. I feel bad that a lot of our family members didnt come out to our family events but I'm really happy that those who did go to our family events really treat the family like a real family. I go to the meetings and get welcomed by "hi father". Whether they're just saying it or not, I'm proud that I had the chance to make a relationship with those within my family. A lot of our socials consisted of going to get food. Sometimes we go to supermarkets (or three supermarkets). I think the biggest part of our family coming close would be the dance practices put on by our own Tran Vu. To practice together and actually be dedicated to learning the dance really brought our family together. Everyone put in an effort to make it to the practices and worked hard so that we didn't only know the moves, but be good at them. I was so proud to see that kind of dedication in something as small as a club family. To me, I wanted to create a group of people that knew each other as friends and could go to each other whenever they needed help. I feel like I can confidently say that when I look at Wong Dynasty, they look like a real family. I can confidently say that I know active members of the family on a personal level because we take the time to get to know each other. We have danced, we have had yogurt fights, and have had memorable times together. I hope I made an impact on their college life and that this has helped them to feel welcomed to Circle K, feel like they have friends within SDSU, and a family within SDSU Circle K.

Deep in the jungles of China, hidden in the hills of Mongolia, and hiding in the villages of Tibet, there are many members of our kind, but few deserve our title. 'Lucky', 'Fortunate', 'Good-Karma', it doesn't matter. All that matters, is that our ancestors have helped deliver honor to families (and cows) throughout the history of man. The start of this year's Lucky Cricket dynasty began with an introductory bonfire that featured the respective families of this generation within the SDSU Empire of Circle K International. Events that followed were several Express of the Tapioca (which allowed the members of this family to redeem their 'luck', because every family member has earned a free boba drink of their choice). We then invaded and conquered the Haunted Hotel in Downtown San Diego. It was a fearsome battle, but our luck in survival prevailed! Things heated up when we held a delicious Pumpkin Pie baking social, and then participated in the honorary club-family pumpkin carving contest. Victory was a trait that was seen in our bloods, when we won 'Best Baked Good' at the Kiwanis Family Softball Tournament thanks to Marissa Amat. As time went by, the Lucky Crickets gained an alliance with the Hun Daisy Assassins. The treaty, which proved evident in our codominance in Penny Wars, and a co-movie & Pre-Thanksgiving dinner social, mirrored our greatest fellowship with one another. As the Circle K year comes to an end, the Crickets have made a last hurrah with several more dinner & movie socials, and supportive socials at APSA's Fashion Talent Show, and the viewing of Hay Fever (a play designed with the help of our Immediate-Past Social Chair, Martin Quach). Throughout history, many have supported those in need, and conquered those who were deemed conquerable. These acts of deliverance have brought honor to those who earned it. Now it has been our turn to deliver that honor! Not only to ourselves, but to Circle K! We are the few that are immune to the trials of bad fortune. We are the restless, that will continue to survive in any battle fought. We are the Lucky Crickets.
