About the Course Supply Chains are results of the integration of interactive processes within an organization, and across firms upstream as well as downstream. Each process may consist of a number of functions performed by entities belonging to different domains of specialization and reporting relationships. Managing a supply chain, therefore, is a complex exercise of integrating a large number of transactions in a large number of functions across organizations in a practical and economic manner so as to contribute to the profitability of all members in the chain. Objective The objective of the course is to enable the participants to understand the functionalities in SCM and the functional integration needed to succeed in a globally competitive business environment. It aims to develop an insight into different types of supply chains, supply chain strategy formulations, frameworks, complexities and trade offs. The course, among other aspects, is aimed at bringing about familiarity with concepts of demand distortions in supply chains, Sourcing and Distribution strategies, Contracts management, Procurement and Vendor Management issues. Participants will be encouraged to discuss and articulate on contemporary issue in logistics and global supply chains including appreciation of risks in supply chain performance and mitigation strategies. Pedagogy The course will be covered from operations and logistics perspective and emphasize on managerial issues in functional integration. Apart from input sessions on concepts, frameworks and strategies, there will be discussions on classical case studies to bring home practical issues involved in decision making. The concepts will be drawn from various reference books available in the library or material distributed in the class. Simulation exercises and out door visits will be a part of the pedagogy including inputs from corporate executives. Expectation from Participants Each participant is expected to come to the class with pre reading of cases and other prescribed materials as and when required. This being a practical subject it will be necessary to supplement class room activities with reading of journals and books available in the library and during the autumn internship. Surprise quiz from time to time will be a regular feature. Each academic group shall prepare a term paper on a topic of choice for submission and presentation.
