Presidents Message
2 June 2013 Greetings all, Our board of directors had online board meeting on June 1, 2013. It was attended by our entire executive and board as well as 6 observers. Two hours is just not enough time to thoroughly discuss all the issues that need to be discussed. We did however decide to split the Not-For-Profit changes into two stages: Name change only for the 2013 AGM. We will work on Articles of Continuance and Bylaws for the 2014 AGM. This will allow us to work out details about how the new bylaws will affect membership and chapters and allow the chapters to discuss the changes at the chapter level. As well, there will be a panel discussion at CIS Halifax to explain new legislation to members. I would like to thank the members of the Not-For-Profit task force who met on four occasions over the last few months to work together to help ensure a sound legal foundation for Ostomy Canada Society to fulfill our vision to be Canada's voice for people living with an ostomy. Special thanks to Ann Ivol for chairing this task force and bringing the recommendations to the board. I would also like to thank the members of our fund-raising committee who have agreed to meet regularly and come up with and implement ideas on how to raise awareness, at the same time as raising much needed funds for UOAC. There will be some new events coming soon and we will let you know the details as soon as we have everything set up. The board of directors will meet in person in Halifax on August 16, the day before the Chapter Information Session (CIS), and attend the CIS on August 17 and meet again the afternoon after the Annual General Meeting on August 18. The Ostomy Halifax chapter is going to have a great get together. See more information later on in this UOAConnection! Bladder Cancer Canada hosted a patient conference in Toronto on May 25. UOAC set up a booth at this conference with Ann and Roger Ivol as well and John Molnar representing UOAC. It was held at the International Centre, Mississauga. It was well attended and included over 100 attendees from the Toronto area. Our board got to speak to some of the organizers and we are developing partnerships with them. Our friends to the south of us, the United Ostomy Associations of America (UOAA), have a conference in 2013 and are inviting their Canadian friends to come join them in Jacksonville Florida. The theme this year is Bridge to Acceptance. Registration fees and hotel rooms are very reasonably priced. Activities start on August 7th and continue through August 10th. To find out more information or to register for the 2013 National conference, go to http://www.ostomy.org/ conference_2013.shtml.

FROM THE EDITOR

EDITORS MESSAGE Its getting close. The annual general meeting of Ostomy Canada (nee UOAC) is just a couple of months away with arrangements set for a busy and productive session. Decisions will be made that will positively affect all of us ostomates for years to come. Tied in with the AGM will be a Chapter Information session being staged by Ostomy Halifax with great assistance from Frederictons Judy Steeves who is arranging the program and hosting the August 17 event. Judy has a great list of speakers lined up who will bring chapter presidents and representatives from across Canada information on how better to operate their organizations. Also happening that day, and it will be a happening, is the 40th anniversary luncheon of the Halifax chapter. Started in 1973 by Bette Yetman and Ruth Kenney, among others, Halifax is the largest chapter in Canada with close to 300 members, of whom at least 60 show up for monthly meetings. Halifax has made major contributions to national Bette was a national president, started the Connection, and has been an advocate for Ostomates for years. She is a past recipient of the Maple Leaf Award (2006), Presidents A ward (2000) and Renaissance Award (2001). Ruth was named ET of the Year (2002) and ET of the Year by UOAA in 1993. In addition Betty Woolridge, Maple Leaf Award recipient in 2007, started Spouses and Significant Others in Halifax and then spread it across Canada. Halifax is hoping each and every person attending the AGM will attend the luncheon, a sit-down affair with entertainment, celebration and plenty of door prizes. Tickets are limited to the first 100 (60 have already been sold) so act fast. There is a form with this Connection with all the information needed to buy tickets. Kudos to Lisa Gausman for a marvelous edition of Ostomy Canada. Some great writing, captivating stories and marvelous visuals.

Congratulations and thank you to those who have put their names forward to accept positions on the next Ostomy Canada Board of Directors. While there will be no formal election, members from across Canada are looking forward to meeting the new board member and wishing them well as they accept responsibility for keeping our organization thriving and healthy.

SEE YOU ALL IN HALIFAX AUGUST 17 AND 18. Joel Jacobson

2014 UOAC Conference in St. Johns

Delilah Guy has been appointed Conference Administrator for the 2014 conference in St. Johns. She will be working closely wi th St. Johns chapter president and Chair Carol Wells along with other members of the Gander and St. Johns chapters. Watch this spa ce for updates in the coming months! The dates for the Conference are July 31 August 2, 2014. We have the Delta St. Johns tentatively booked. Come see Canada`s coolest city to quote Danny Williams.

Royal St. Johns Regatta

The Royal St. Johns Regatta is North America's oldest annual sporting event with documented proof of 1816 boat races. There is credible contention that St. Johns regattas were held even earlier than 1816, likely in the 18th century. Held on Quidi Vid i Lake in St. Johns, Newfoundland, the regatta is scheduled for the first Wednesday of August. If weather isns suitable, and wind con ditions are very important, the event is postponed until the next suitable day. Since Regatta Day is a civic holiday in St. Johns, t his means that the weather actually determines whether or not workers have the day off --- a matter sometimes complicated by late-night parties associated with the end of George Street Festival the night before. Crews row six member, coxswained, fixed seat racing shells that are as identical as possible and are the property of the Royal St. Johns Regatta Committee. Mens crew row a 2.450km course, womens crew row a 1.225km course, and all crews aew required to turn buo ys and return to the start--finish line. A growing number of people, local and foreign, visit Quidi Vidi Lake each year for the event, averaging around 50,000 in recent years. It has also become a popular spot for both provincial and federal politicians to meet the public. Also from the rowing competitions, the Royal St. Johns Regatta is well known for its lakeside entertainment. The Regatta host hundreds of booths operated by i ndividuals and organizations, ranging from various games of chance to food and drink. This years Regatta will be held on the 7th of August

Quidi Vidi Lake

Quidi Vidi Lake is a mile long body of water located at the east end of the city of St. Johns, Newfoundland. The lake has a long history of hosting sporting evants, with the most renowned being the annual Royal St. Johns Regatta, said to be the oldest con tinuous sporting event still held in North America. The former Pepperrell Air Force Base (now called CFS St. Johns) was located on t he north shore of this lake and the Virginia Waters, a stream which meandered through the air base, flows into Quidi Vidi Lake. Quidi Vidi Lake has a 3.8--kilometer (2.4mile) walking trail surrounding it. This trail is very popular among Newfoundlanders as people from afar.

George Street Festival

The Biggest Little Street in North America comes alive for six days of musical entertainment: The George Street Association has announced the headline acts for all six nights of the 29th Annual George Street Festival, happening on the famous downtown St. Johns cobblestones from August 1st through August 6th, 2013. We have continued to raise the bar with respect to the quality of entertainment that has ever performed on stage at the Geor ge Street Festival. The George Street Festival attracts music fan all over North America ans we are able to provide a collection of artists that our George Street patrons have asked for.
