University of North Texas Summer 2013 Intensive English Language Institute Week 4: June 24 - 30

Restaurant Night: Friday, June 28, 5:30 - 8:30 PM. Have you ever wondered what kind of food is served by a local restaurant? Do you want to know where you can find good food in Denton? Try a new restaurant with one of your IELI teachers or staff members! Each teacher will take a group to a different restaurant and give you advice on which dishes are best. Sign up in Ambers office (SYMR 202) by Thursday, June 27. Students are responsible for paying for their own meal and providing a tip the waiter/waitress. Cowboys Stadium Tour and Rangers Game: Saturday, July 6, 1:00 PM - 11:30 PM. Explore Cowboys Stadium with IELI and learn about the architecture, engineering, art, and business decisions behind the world -famous stadium. Well visit the football field, the Dallas Cowboys locker room, and more on a guided tour! Afterwards, well go to Rangers Ballpark and cheer for Yu Darvish and the Texas Rangers as they play the Houston Astros! Tickets are $5 for IELI students and $30 for family and friends. A limited number of tickets are available, so sign up in Alissas office (SYMR 205) beginning July 1st!

There will be a Ramadan Celebration Friday, July 5, from 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 203. Amber needs some student volunteers to help plan this event. If you are interested in helping, there will be a meeting Wednesday, June 26 in SYMR 201D.

Class photos will be next Monday, July 1, during Communication classes. Dress nicely and be prepared to smile!

There will not be classes on Thursday, July 4, for the United States Independence Day. UNT and DCTA buses will not run that day.

UNT 101: How to Apply Meeting Tuesday, June 25, 12:101:00 PM in SYMR 271. If you are interested in learning about UNT and the many programs offered, you should attend this meeting.

All students need to make sure the contact information is correct on their My.Unt.Edu page. Your address, phone number, and e-mail address need to be correct. The university and IELI will contact you through the information that is given on your student page. If you do not know what information is on your My.UNT.Edu student page, stop by MARQ 314, and they will show you where to look or help you update your information. Call the Health Center NOW to schedule your appointment. Phone number: 940-565-2333, Press option 2 When you go to the Health Center, you must bring three forms with you: TB Screening Record, Medical History Form, and TB Screening Form. You should have received the forms at orientation. If you need extra copies of the forms, have questions, or would like help making your appointment, come to Ambers office, SYMR 202.

All new Summer international students are required to be screened for tuberculosis after beginning classes at UNT/IELI. Come by Ambers office (SYMR 202) to make your appointment. You must complete a TB test before Thursday, June 27.

The Department of Teacher Education and Administration at UNT needs 3-5 volunteers. UNT students in the Teacher Education program want to meet with you for 1.5 to 2 hours and give you feedback on your English skills, strengths, and weaknesses. If you want to participate, contact Prof. Ricardo Gonzalez (Ricardo.Gonzalez@unt.edu). All information you give them will be confidential.

Meet a labbie: Ying Jin My name is Ying, and I am a student assistant for the IELI computer lab! I am from China. Heres some fun facts about me: I speak Japanese, Chinese, and English. I like making friends and sharing funny stories. I LOVE corny jokes. Come by the lab and say hi. It will be a lot of fun!

The next conversation hour will be Friday, June 28, from 12:10 PM 1:00 PM in SYMR 203 Sign up in Ambers office, SYMR 202, if you want to attend. Only 40 students may attend, and you must be on Ambers sign-up list to attend. This will be a great opportunity to meet American volunteers and practice your English. There will be free food and conversation games. Conversation Hour will be held on Fridays during the Summer term. Students must sign up each week to secure their spot for Conversation Hour.

The next meeting will be July 3, from 5:15 - 7:30 PM. We will be having our own ladies-only July 4th celebration. There will be free patriotic food! Bring your children and any of your women friends who want to join! Meet at the Eagle statue outside of SYMR at 5:15 PM on July 3rd if you need a ride. It is open for women of every level. See Amber or Katie in SYMR 202 for more information or if you have any questions.

You can view your assignment grades and class average any time you want to online at my.unt.edu. Starting Summer 2013, your teacher will not give you paper copies of your class grades and averages. SYMR 224 will now remain unlocked at all times so that students can pray at any time during the week as well as on Fridays.

Your mid-term grade report will be available for pick up during Week 5 on July 2, from 12:00 - 1:00 PM in SYMR 203. Bring your ID card. (No ID card, no report. Only YOU can pick up your grade report .) Reports that are not picked up on Tuesday in SYMR 203 will be available in the Main Office (SYMR 204).

Each week, Amber and Katie will make a Weekly Update video of important events and announcements. If you would like to star in one of the videos, please stop by SYMR 202 and talk to Amber or Katie. Volunteers will be entered into a drawing for a prize at the end of the term!
