UPDATE

(April 2004)

The update mainly reflects changes as a result of BS 7671 : 2001 (2004). This list of non editorial changes is provided to help trainers and lecturers, and in case you wish to update any printed versions of the book which you may have.

Preface and Scope,

Amend first paragraph, third line: some of the requirements of BS 7671 : 2001 inc Amd No 1 2, Requirements
Figures 1a, 1b, 2, 3a, 3b, 5 and 7,

Conductor colours changed, red to brown and black to blue.

2.2 Certificates, Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate,

Add new paragraph: The certificate may also be used for the replacement of equipment such as accessories or luminaires, but not for the replacement of distribution boards or similar items.
2.6.2 b Identification of non-flexible cables and conductors,

Replace Table 51A with Table 51 (twice).

2.6.2 c Identification of flexible cables and cords,

Replace Table 51B with Table 51 (twice), replace 514-07-01 with 514-04-04, replace 514-07-02 with 514-04-05, add new links 514-05-01 and 514-05-02.

2.7.9

Protection by separation of circuits, Tests between SELV circuits and other circuits ,

Amend paragraph 1, third line: conductors of the SELV circuit and those of other circuits and the protective
2.7.9 Protection by separation of circuits, Electrical separation,

Amend paragraph (iv): operation of the protective device must be verified by measurement of the fault loop impedances (i.e between live conductors) to the various pieces of connected equipment,. These values can then be compared with the relevant maximum Zs values given by Regulation 413-02-08 (Tables 41B, 41C and 41D for 230 V systems), with reference to the type and rating of the protective device for the separated circuit. If protection is provided by overcurrent devices, the appropriate value of loop impedance given by Regulation 413-02-08 (Tables 41B, 41C and 41D for 230 V systems) shall be determined. Although these tables pertain to the phase/protective conductor loop path, and the measured values are between live conductors, they give a reasonable approximation to the values required to achieve the required disconnection time.
3.9.1 k Comments on individual items to be inspected, Marking and Labelling,

Replace link 514-08-01 with 514-01-02, add new link 514-01-03. Also add new paragraph (vi): (vi) Non-standard colours If alterations or additions are made to an installation so that some of the wiring complies with the harmonized colours and there is also wiring in the old colours, a warning notice shall be affixed at or near the appropriate distribution board with the following wording: 514-14-01

CAUTION This installation has wiring colours to two versions of BS 7671. Great care should be taken before undertaking extension, alteration or repair that all conductors are correctly identified.

4.2 Instrument accuracy,

Add new paragraph at the end: The accuracy and repeatability of the earth loop impedance measurements at low values is limited by inherent instrument errors and the occurrence of mains transients (and spikes), interference and also close vicinity to distribution transformers. Traditionally in analogue instruments this corresponds to making measurements very near to the zero point on the scale where inaccuracies and non-repeatability are not at all evident with this type of electromechanical movement.

Section 5 Forms,

Replace Suppliers facility with Distributors facility (three times), Replace Inspection Schedules with Schedules of Inspections (three times), Replace Test Result Schedules with Schedules of Test Results (three times).
Section 5 Forms, Schedules of Inspections

Add new note:

LIM to indicate that, exceptionally, a limitation agreed with the person ordering the work prevented the inspection or test being carried out

Section 5 Forms, NOTES ON SCHEDULE OF TEST RESULTS

Add new note to *6:

(R1 + R2) need not be recorded if R2 is recorded in column 7.

Section 5 Forms, NOTES ON COMPLETION OF MINOR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION WORKS CERTIFICATE

Amend Scope:
The Minor Electrical Installation Works Certificate form is only intended to be used for additions and alterations to an electrical installation that do not extend to the introduction provision of a new circuit. e.g. Examples include the addition of a socket-outlet or a lighting point to an existing circuit (Regulation 741-01-03), the relocation of a light switch etc. This Certificate may also be used for the replacement of equipment such as accessories or luminaires, but not for the replacement of distribution boards or similar items. Appropriate inspection and testing, however, should always be carried out irrespective of the extent of the work undertaken.
Section 5 Forms, MINOR ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION WORKS CERTIFICATE, GUIDANCE

Amend Scope:
The Minor Works Certificate is only to be used for additions, alterations or replacements to an installation that do not extend to the provision of a new circuit. Examples include the addition of a socket-outlet or lighting point to an existing circuit, or the replacement or relocation of a light switch. A separate Certificate should have been received for each existing circuit on which minor works have been carried out. This Certificate is not valid appropriate if you requested the contractor to undertake more extensive installation work., for which you should have received Aan Electrical Installation Certificate would be required in such circumstances.
