Dear Readers,
We still need to get the Equal Rights Amendment passed in only three more states and North Carolina is one of them! Please write or call you U.S. Senators and Representatives and urge them to cosponsor the resolutions to eliminate the deadline and make the ERA part of the Constitution. We need three more states to ratify and North Carolina is one of them. Ask your friends and family to speak out for the ERA, Begin talking now with your state legislators. Explain why you support the ERA and urge them to support it when it comes up in 2015. Passing the ERA will make sex discrimination illegal in government wherever it exists. Over time, equality would be upheld in credit, wages, employment, insurance, education and sports, just to name a few. So please send out a clear message that discrimination cannot be tolerated and promote the ERA for our general welfare, Have a Happy and Safe 4 of July,

hat is the Message You Want to Share with the World? Your authentic marketing message it what you shout to the world about what you do, what your business has to offer and how you play BIG in your authentic space. When you are pursuing your passion and purpose, you should know how to communicate that to the world; however, some dont know how to or they get stuck on what it should say that attracts clients consistently. What you say and how you say it speaks volumes to your clients and your industry, so it should be simple, concise and come from the core of your soul about your business. The marketing message should also flow throughout your entire marketing, branding and communication strategies. When you know your targeted niche, (divine clients), you can speak directly to what they are in need of which captures them through an effective and soulful message. What you shout to the world should be strong and effective, yet
speaking with confidence that your business is a conscious-centered business that is heart-centered. The more concise your message is the better targeted it is, which makes the approach much simpler. When one is trying to find their authentic voice, there must be some self-discovery that should take place in order to experience and explore the true essence of who they are and what really is significant in walking out their purpose and how it relates to their business. Your purpose, passion and destiny are interconnected and they play out in your personal life and your business. But most significantly, you have a true authentic joy in what you bring to the experience, which is peace and harmony in your life and in your business. They both are interdependent on the other because your business is built on a solid foundation of your values that are intertwined in your lifestyle and how you live your life. You bring joy to both, which is ultimately living authentically because you are doing what brings you joy, peace
and happiness. When you can live in both worlds as authentically as you can, that says a lot because you cannot live your passion freely and be bottled up.

Your marketing message is in direct correlation with who you are and your purpose in what you provide and when you are serving in a capacity, you are providing exactly what you are supposed to, to whom you are supposed to serve. There should be no question about what it is that you do and you know you do it well. But the question becomes how do you know what message to put out there that would grab hold of your clients? The question consists of the following: grab it so there is a resonation with your offer and it will solve exactly what they are looking for. However, your marketing voice needs to speak their language and it is at the very core of your soul that creates an attachment, which pulls the client in to where they would want to see what you can do specifically for them. There are several people and potential clients that have similar challenges, yet they cannot articulate it, but when they hear it through your authentic marketing message clearly, then it will trigger what they are challenged with and prompts them to call you to inquire. What is the language that you need to speak to grab their attention?

Your marketing niche has to be refined and solve the anxieties of others and when you know that, you can consistently bring positive results over and over to the same problem. When you
make it your positioned brand and purpose, it can create a successful business. It becomes a process and you have to be willing to endure the process because it is not always going to come easily to you, but you should know that you are honoring who you are as you serve in your capacity.

espite all its recent bad press and sluggish stocks, theres no doubt that Facebook is still THE place for businesses to be online. Over 1.6 BILLION people worldwide use Facebook. Even better, most teens have abandoned Facebook in favor of different social media sites. The average age of a person on Facebook is now 35. That makes Facebook even more of a marketers paradise. If you already have a Fanpage for your business, you could be wondering how to get more out of it. These advanced Facebook marketing techniques will show how to make your Fanpage work harder for you. Change the Cover Once, marketers knew the Facebook cover as the land of no. Despite having all that space, there was so much you couldnt do with it. You couldnt have contact information, calls to action, arrows pointing to the like button, or offers. Today, thats all changed.
In Facebooks most recent round of updates, theyve decided to lift many of the restrictions that plagued the covers. Of course, theres still a catch; the new cover cant be more than 20% words. The words can now say whatever you want; they just cant be the dominant feature. The Return of the App Third party apps are nothing new to Facebook. They are wonderful ways to snazz up your page, present offers, contests and more. Best of all, people can do all of this without ever leaving Facebook. Once, third party apps were a business best friend. Then Facebook decided that all apps had to have SSL certificates and the industry came to a screeching halt. Today, many app companies have recovered, but few individual business use apps. You can take advantage of this by adding fun, attractive apps to your Facebook page. Though there are many types of apps you can use,
16
the best ones are from your own autoresponder and the one from Static HTML. Static HTML is an Iframe app. That means you can insert any single webpage and make it look like its on Facebook. This is particularly useful for blogs, opt in pages, contests, offers and more. Any page from your website can be shown to your fan without your fan ever leaving Facebook. This builds up the know, like and trust factor. Its the most effective way to utilize your tab feature. Best of all, theres no individual SSL certificate required. Your Autoresponder If you already have an autoresponder service, it most likely has a built in app to allow you to integrate it with social media sites like Facebook. This enables you to collect the names of all your Facebook followers then market to them with emails. Its also insurance. When the crowd moves away from Facebook, youll still be able to reach out to your many fans. Ads are Advantageous Though everyone knows the power of Facebook is in the socializing, dont underestimate the power of ads. Ads can help you grow a Fanpage form 0 to 2000 people in under 10 days. Once you have more people to mar-
ket to, you will also have more people seeing your marketing efforts. At some point, your page will start growing exponentially. Then you wont have to buy any more ads for it. Marketing with Memes Memes are those pictures youve seen on Facebook with captions on top or underneath. A meme can also be a quote with any kind of picture. Memes are often funny with an unexpected twist or deep wisdom. They also have the best chance of going viral. Grumpy Cat The Most Interesting Man In The World and What I Think I Do are some of the most common memes. Though they look hard, they are easier than ever to create. There are many kinds of free and paid meme generators online. These generators provide you with everything from the pictures, to suggestions, to collections of popular, brandable memes. Poll Perfection Polls are not only a great way to engage your audience; they are also a great way to gather market research. For example, lets say you sold widgets. You have a new one coming out, but you dont know if it should be blue or purple. Using the polls,
17
you can simply ask your fans and make what they want. This works for any kind of service or widget. In fact, many businesses are finding this kind of research even better than the focus groups of yesteryear. Plus, polls often go viral. Theres an old saying in marketing that to get the most new clients, you go where they are. With over 1.6 billion people, most of whom are adults, Facebook is the place to be. Your
customers are already there. If youre there too, then these advanced marketing features can help you get more fans, delight your existing fans and have more people interested in buying your services later.

by Vilma Betancourt- ODay Resort on the wrong bus as we dispersed for the different restaurants for dinner and subsequently ended up at the Latin Restaurant with Erin and Debbie. Chapter 8 of the book has a section called Be Open to Serendipity. How appropriate is that? Meeting Sharon Hadary has changed my life forever. I attended her workshop the next morning and was very impressed with her presentation style. She has the gift of engaging her audience while discussing statistical information. All of the women in attendance had many questions and comments we wanted more time with our fearless leader. I left hungry for more information. In her childhood, Sharon was an avid reader (loved historical novels) and enjoyed writing. Her favorite classes were English and Social Studies/History. From an early age she was always fascinated by the history of previous civilizations and had a sense of how important it was to learn about them. As a young woman, Sharon was very active in her schools drama club although she was never on the stage as an actor. Rather, she worked behind the scenes as a stage manager: planning, mobilizing, bringing people together to achieve a goal: isnt that what leaders do? At the time, she did not know that managing projects and having them come to fruition is a vital skill that exceptional

Do you believe in serendipity? There I was, having tapas at a Latin restaurant in Palm Beach County, Florida, with two new friends (Erin Toung and Debbie Diaz) who were also attending the National Women Business Owners Corporation Decades of Excellence event. Approaching our table was our young waitress with a petite woman carrying a small suitcase. We invited our new friend to join our party and we immediately started questioning her about her business background. She very graciously and patiently answered our questions. Erin, Debbie and I were very engaged in the conversation with our new friend and then A Wall Street Journal article was mentioned and I, in my usual boisterous way, said that I had just clipped that article into my Evernote digital WBE binder. I then realized that this petite woman with whom we were sharing our meal, was one of the authors of How Women Lead, a book that I just happened to have brought with me to the conference. Imagine my excitement after discovering that I was sitting across the table from Sharon Hadary! Yes, I could not resist, and I asked her to autograph my copy of the book. And yes, I was star-struck. Serendipityindeed. That memorable evening I ended up leaving the PGA

leaders must possess, she was not aware of that type of language, as she is now. Children sometimes think of leaders as individuals who are charismatic, at the forefront, i.e. teachers or the President of the United States people who are very important, she says. Are we born to be leaders? Can we learn to be effective leaders? What does it mean to be a leader? In my conversations with Sharon I have learned that being a leader does not necessarily mean being the first in line, waving the flag or being in a position of authority. She tells me that as we mature, the perception of leadership becomes a more robust concept for us.
Sharon spent twenty years working for IBM where she received a world class education. During her last five or six years at IBM, she worked in New York while her husband and her home were in Washington, DC. After traveling extensively for so many years, she began to consider her options as she wanted to be in one place and spend more time in DC, strengthening her bonds with her family and her community. During a downsizing at IBM, she accepted a buy-out offer from them. Shortly after her retirement from IBM she began to seek employment at what she hoped would be another large company in the DC area. She actually enjoyed working at a big corporation. Serendipity really means to be flexible and open to new things you did not originally think were a part of the plan and to be willing to go down that path and see what you can learn from it, says Maria Coyne, Executive Vice President, Consumer and Small Business Segment Head, Key Bank Member, Executive Council at KeyCorp as quoted in How Women Lead. The book teaches us that serendipity in business means staying nimblegive yourself the freedom to experimentdevote time to thinking strategically about your business. During her search for new employment, she met the women who were starting the Center for Womens Business Research (the Center), a non-profit.
32
Since Sharon did not have any fundraising experience she was not a candidate for the Center and she did not want to run a non-profit. They agreed that she would work there, part time, for three month, to help them get started and put in place all the processes and procedures - strengths she developed during her tenure at IBM. As life would have it, she was its Executive Director for twenty years.
They met and subsequently worked with a gentleman who was already pulling information from the Census Bureau reports. They asked him to breakdown the data by gender, which he had not done before. Initially he thought there would be no differences between the genders, but the data proved otherwise.

The Center received sponsorships for their research in some cases because the sponsors were impressed with their ability to get headlines when they communicated the data to the public. Research can be very difficult to communicate. At one event, after Sharon presented a report with statistical data, the audience applauded. Another speaker at the event told her that she is the only person she knew that could get applauded for presenting statistics. Sharon and her staff had mastered the skill of presenting numbers that had meaning and the audience loved the data. The Center is now run at Babson College and works on a global level. Sharon says she has lived her life in increments of twenty years: 20 years at IBM, 20 years running a non-profit and the third twenty years are being spent taking everything she learned in the first forty years and synthesizing it: writing, speaking and teaching about womens leadership. She is now an Adjunct Professor in the Doctoral of Management Program at the University of Maryland University College. She loves to teach. Her mission, she says, in her third twenty years is to get the word out about women as leaders so that women understand and value their strengths and to give them the practical knowledge they need to get ahead and to achieve their aspirations. Through her book,

We are grateful to the women interviewed for the book for dedicating the time and energy to share their stories. Sharon and Laura Henderson wanted to take all the new research that is available and compile it so that they can share it with women that aspire to leadership and who want to make a difference. It is their mission to share the experiences of highly successful women so that we can all learn from them. No picnic or potluck is complete without potato salad. Whether its served warm, cold, creamy, cheesy or with a splash of vinegar, the dish is a true American cookout classic. Potato salads are easy to make and even easier to pack full of flavor. Craft your own potato salad by cutting a delicious, Idaho potato into cubes with the skins still on. Boil in water for about 8 to 15 minutes, then check for doneness by piercing a cube with a fork or skewer. If the fork goes through the potato with little resistance, drain the potatoes and return them to the pot. Add your favorite dressing and
Potato Picnic Salad
Yield: 6 to 7 servings For the Salad Dressing 1/3 cup red wine vinegar 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/4 teaspoon pepper 1 clove of garlic, chopped 2/3 cup olive oil For the Salad 3 pounds Idaho potatoes, about 7 medium 1/2 pound cooked green beans 12 cherry tomatoes 2 hard boiled eggs, peeled 1 cup cooked corn kernels 1/4 cup minced celery, about 1 stalk 1/4 cup pitted black olives 2 tablespoons fresh parsley, chopped
ingredients while the potatoes are still warm. Warm potatoes more easily absorb the delicious dressing. These decadent dishes are best eaten the day after theyre made to give the flavors time to meld. When youre ready to serve your potato salad, keep it cold by placing your serving dish in a larger bowl filled with ice. Family meals are always better with delicious, flavorful potatoes. Always look for the Grown in Idaho seal to be sure youre buying genuine Idaho potatoes. For more recipes for salads and other potato dishes, visit www.IdahoPotato.com.
For salad dressing, combine vinegar, mustard, salt, pepper and garlic in a large salad bowl. Whisk in olive oil and set aside. For the salad, bring 2 quarts of water to a boil in large saucepan. Cook unpeeled potatoes in water for about 15 minutes until just fork tender. Drain potatoes and cool immediately under cold running water. While potatoes are cooling, cut green beans into 1-inch pieces; halve cherry tomatoes and quarter eggs. Combine beans, tomatoes and eggs with cooked corn and celery in bowl with the salad dressing. Peel cooled potatoes, then cut into 2-inch pieces and toss with the dressing. Sprinkle salad with olives and chopped parsley just before serving.
