Chapter one- Not a fairytale. Its one minute after midnight, the darkness is thick and almost stifling. The only thing that seems to illuminate the cloudy darkness is my anticipation. The only sound that can be heard is my thumping heartbeat. Im excited, because its been a while. My palms are sweaty and my breathing gets shallower by the second. For a split second, I want to turn around and flea but Im hindered because I see her. She looks even more beautiful under the enchanting moonlight. Such elegance and grace are evident by her attire. Her evening gown clads her slender frame perfectly, the subtle pink hue compliments her blemish-less ivory skin and makes her glow. Her eyes, those blue eyes are gorgeous and I want to fall into them. I love how her shiny blonde hair glimmers and I want nothing more but to run my fingers through it. She is like a dream. A princess who stumbled out of a fairytale. I want to be her prince so badly that I emerge from my hiding place. I know what I came to do but if she just smiles I will go back into the shadows and admire her from a distance. She looks up when I show myself, her lips curve, and I think she is happy to see me but her curved lips are just a feature of her disgusting scowl. I can feel the tears burning my eyes and its a sensation that I am way too familiar with, its a sensation that I hate. I grit my teeth when her words start piercing through my psyche. I gave her a chance and she treats me so badly. She starts to approach me and I take a step when I remember that I hold the power. My fingers feel for my back pocket and my small fingers curve around the knife easily. When I reveal the blade she retreats and its the first time Ive felt this good in a while. I could feel the adrenaline and its pulsing through my veins. I feel weight free and I cannot control my breathing when her face is plastered with fear. She begins to run but with a single long stride I step on her elegant gown and she has nowhere to run, the princess has nowhere to run. She screams and I scream back for a completely different reason. I grab her shoulders and feel her body stiffen and I can see the rapid rise and fall of her beautiful chest. I dont want it to be over so soon, Im far from over and it excites even more. She still screams but as I plunge into her chest it withers into a mere groan, and then her eyes close and its the most alive Ive ever felt. I feel the weight of her lifeless body and I sit her down because now the real fun starts. I always wish that it never ends this way; the beautiful princess didnt give me a chance to be her prince. I step back and watch her lifeless body as I wipe the vibrant red from the knife. The familiarity of the sour aftertaste kicks in
3

faster than I remember. The adrenaline is gone and I could almost see my veins taint with black. The rain begins to fall and I only wish that it can fill me because Im emptyand cold. I wish she could fill me but shes gone. I had to take her away because shes not my princess.. and this is not a fairytale.

Chapter Two- Detective-babe. Shhh! Youre gonna wake her. Aven Brawley whispered to his partner Grey Hayward. Grey had been applying shaving cream to the only female detective on their teams face. He traced the white foam on her dark eyebrows and hairline and on the tip of her slightly tanned skinned chin. The two respected detectives giggled like school boys as they began to put streaks of the cream through her auburn red hair. Grey and Aven, even though good at their jobs, were extremely mischievous together. There was no case for the last couple of weeks and the two were dangerously bored with the case files on their desk. Kalista Jocosta had fallen asleep and without her partner there, the two had found an activity. Grey crouched in front of her as he continued to apply the foam. His beige striped shirt had been yanked out of his black trousers as he bent for leverage to get close enough to Kalista. That was payback for giving Susan my number, she so was creepy. Grey said leaning back on his desk. Last weekend, Kalista gave a patrol cop his number, mistaken that she was doing Grey a favor, he was the only one on their team without a social life. The precinct was especially quiet that Monday morning. Their last homicide was over a month ago and Captain Donovan made sure they were occupied with case files from their previous cases. Still, the grey walls of the precinct were especially bland. There wasnt any hustle of patrol officers or the crime scene unit throughout their precinct. Brown desk were stacked dangerously close to one another and at the far back was a holding cell that was rarely used although the Fremont precinct was usually busy. Nine a.m. was closing in when Captain Cole Donovan approached them. Aven was reclined on his chair neatly tucked under his meticulously neat desk opposite Greys unkempt desk. The men scrambled in front of their prank as their captain walked over. His face was round and he had wrinkled blotchy skin that told his age. His piercing glassy blue eyes looked from Aven too Grey. He was a tall but pudgy Irish man with bleach blond hair that had begun to recede and thin lips that only seemed to release obscenities. The man was a lunatic but a fierce leader and a law enforcement legend; it was his last year on the job before his pending retirement.

You two cant answer your damn phones, weve got a DB at Safeco Fields, and hurry up and where the hell is Jocosta and Evans? Captain Donovan asked folding his muscular arms. Grey and Aven looked at each other, exchanged a brief smile then they both stepped apart and revealed their master piece. Kalista was still peacefully asleep with shaving cream smeared all over her face. You idiots! Wake her up and get down to the fields, you knowto do YOUR JOBS! Sir! the two detectives said in unison, they nodded as the man walked back into his office, slamming his door in the process. We better wake her up. Aven said to Grey hinting that he do the honors. Grey clenched his jaw and nodded slowly until he realized what the senior detective was suggesting. No way, you know how devious Kal can be. Grey said to his partner who was already holstering his gun, ignoring his protest. Fine, but you owe me. Grey started to shake Kalista vigorously until she stirred in her sleep. What? she muttered as her head slipped off the back of her chair. Weve got a case babe! Aven told her as her almond shaped grey eyes opened completely. Her pale grey eyes were in complete contrast to the rich velvet color of her red hair. As she was fully awakened, her cheeks became their normal rosy red and her thick lips reformed to their natural pout. Kalista straightened up in her chair and wiped her eyes as her vision became clearer she noticed the smug expressions plastered to the faces of her colleagues. She narrowed her eyes from the partners back and forth. Aven although in his late forties had a youthful face with fewer stress lines and more smile lines. He had striking blue eyes that were often used to intimidate suspects and a full head of dusty brown hair that was always neatly combed in a buzz cut. Kalista had learned long ago not to ignore her instincts, but she shook off the feeling that they were up to something.

Im up lets go! her usually honey coated voice sounded raspy and sore. Uhh you might wanna wash up first, Grey gestured to her face trying to contain his laughter but to no avail, he hunched over on her desk laughing uncontrollably. What why . she asked flustered. Kalista felt her face and the white foam appeared on her fingertips. Okay cute, Ill get you bastards back. Consider yourself marked for death She said glaring at them, the two men found interest with the hard wood floors and looked down knowing how insidious the young woman could really be. She had played every trick on them known to man since she had been working with them for the last five years. Just some bullpen fun babe. Grey told her smiling as he holstered his gun and clipped his shiny badge onto his belt. She took out a mirror from the drawer of her desk and inspected the damage done to her face. She loved her co-workers to death but she could not wait to avenge her foamed face. Kalista went to the locker rooms to wash up and found her partner unpacking his things. He looked at her with questioning eyes only to receive a roll of her eyes which answered his question. The dynamics of their partnership was scary sometimes. Kalista and Adrian were in an on-going prank war with Grey and Aven. Well get them next time. Adrian told her as he followed her to the washroom. KalimEra, she greeted him in her native tongue. Where were you last night? I called you twice. Sorry mom, I was busy. He replied in a dry tone. This he gestured between them has been going on for five years now, I still dont speak Greek. AlEEthiaOh.busy with Vivian? Kalista teased him mercilessly about his relationship with the high school English teacher every chance she got. Something like that He held her hair back while she washed her face off of the cream. Adrian repeatedly told her to wear her hair up when she was on the job but

she was just as stubborn as he was and she almost always wore it layered on her back. Heard we got called out, cant say that Im gonna be missing the paper work. He told her while handing her a hand towel. Were headed to Safeco fields. Female DB. But thats all we know right now. Grey said from the door way of the washrooms. Lets go catch us a killer! Kalista said to her partner as she snapped his badge unto his belt. He cocked an eyebrow and smiled at her. I told you not to that ever again! Adrian shouted as Kalista skipped out of the locker room laughing mischievously. If it were one thing other than picking on each other, those four detectives were extremely good at their jobs. Seattle wasnt usually a high crime area but they had their brutal cases now and then. The team reported to Aven but Aven ultimately answered to the captain. Aven who was the senior detective had been promoted seven years ago from the White Collar unit. He was a strong leader and the only one on the team with a family. His wife, Francine was a darling and quite a looker with movie star blonde hair and green eyes, they had two beautiful twin boys who just had their eighth birthday. Aven and Grey were well matched. Partners in crime, oh the irony. They had each others backs in and out of the field and they had just worked from the beginning despite the age difference since Grey was only twenty-five and the youngest on their team. They dispersed in two cars as always and headed for the crime scene. So my anniversary is coming up and Im thinking diamonds. Aven said from behind the wheel. Dude, ever heard that you should never talk to your single friends about relationships. It just makes me dwell more on my single life its ridiculous. Grey your ridiculous man, Francine has asked you a thousand times if you wanted a set up. I bet she knows some really nice women. I dont doubt it but I really dont want to get set up with some divorced housewife. Id prefer to meet someone by fateat a bar.
8

Aven shook his head in disbelief. Sure if youre looking for one night stands, but youre gonna need someone to come home too, trust me the longer youre a cop the more youll want to feel something. I hear you Aven, but I still dont wanna be set up, okay. Fine! Oh were having a Bar-B-Que this Saturday. You know Im there. YeahI know. Grey was charmingly scruffy with shaved head that used to be a head of full blonde hair. He had large sympathetic green eyes and golden tanned skin. He stood only five foot six inches but held his one in comparison to six foot Aven and Adrian. He had been transferred from New York four years ago, and had automatically adapted to the life and flow of the bullpen in Seattle. There was one problem though, he blindly fell for Kalista who wasnt the least bit interested at the time. It almost destroyed him completely, he was captivated by her magnetic beauty as was everybody else in the precinct but they knew better, not to get involved with her. He had eventually gotten over it and now there was nothing more than professional respect and platonic love. The drive to Safeco Fields was unusually quiet; Kalista and Adrian always had something to talk about. She looked over at his profile, his stern jaw, pursed lips and furrowed eyebrows. His eyes were so dark brown they appeared black in contrast to Kalistas glassy grey eyes. His chestnut-brown hair was uncharacteristically tussled. His face was the type of handsome youd past on the street. He could blend in with the corporate world effortlessly. His normal ruddy complexion was now bleached and his warm smile was replaced with a painful grimace. That particular day, something was wrong, Kalista studied his face and it made her worry, he was obviously discontented with something which meant she was too. Adrian was the most optimistic detective in history. He made it his business to see the bright side of any situation, even if there wasnt a bright side he would still be alright with world. Everyone thought that their partnership wouldnt work because of their opposite personalities. Kalista had a darker sense of humor than Adrian but
9

they worked really well together. The detectives and captain had a talk with Adrian before he got settled; bottom line of their argument was to stay emotionally clear of Kalista. He didnt listen but he was able to keep his feelings platonic and there was no confusion. He had yet to tell Kalista about that conversation. Is something wrong Evans? No! he said keeping his hands firmly gripped on the staring wheel, his knuckles bleached white in the process. He turned to her momentarily and was caught by his expression. How about the truth this time. She said turning in her seat to face him. He smiled crookedly and looked over at her. Why do you even try to lie to me, Im guessing that thing with Vivian didnt go well. You could say that, she wanted to know if our relationship was going somewhere. So marriage... Basically, Im not ready and I told her that so she broke it off. SighnOmyIm sorry. Nah its all good at least I can move on now. Of course. What? Why cant you just be sad, youve been broken up with just be angry. No good has to come from it. Why are you so negative? I am not negative. Are too

10

The two would banter until the end of the world and they probably wouldnt notice the ground give away from underneath them. Their debate dragged on until they got to the Stadium, finding a parking spot next to Aven and Greys black sedan, the partners got out and began observing the scene. There was large crowd of people edging the yellow tape to keep them at bay. They all had camera phones photographing the deceased. The body was propped up against one of the seats near the first entrance. As Kalista neared the body she couldnt help but feel the patrol officers eyes graze over her. He raised the tape for her and gave her a smile. You in the right place babe? the young officer said with a smirk. Kalista would never be immune to the audacity of men in Seattle, although she had to deal with it her entire life, she would always have to keep her anger under control. Im sure. She replied calmly to the officer. He was average built with dark eyes and a blond mustache. Cause I could give you a ride to your photo-shoot. Im just kidding, are you the new medical examiners assistant or somethin? Kalista rolled her eyes and lifted her black blazer, her badge glistened in the sun and the officer bowed his head and allowed her to walk on. Adrian watched from a distance, taking deep breaths, if Kalista didnt handle it, then he would have taken on the job and it would have resulted with him being written up for assault. Thats detective babe to you! Kalista said from the other side of the yellow tape. Adrian walked on next to his partner focusing on the scene. The partners had too many heated arguments when Adrian would step in and defend Kalista. Kalista argued that she could take care of herself and Adrian argued that he had too because thats what partners do. Over time he had learnt that she was strong enough to fend for herself every now and again. As they approached the body, they saw both Grey and Avens faces and they knew this one was going to be horrific.

Chapter three The beautiful Debutante. The detectives walked closer to the body. It was a beautiful young blonde girl. The girl wore a stately candy pink gown, there was ornate embroidery at the sweetheart neckline and it flowed gracefully down her slender body. She sat in an undisturbed pool of blood. Her blonde hair was elegantly pinned up and she wore faint red lipstick that was smudged unto her chin. Kalista began observing the body just as the medical examiner and her new assistant arrived. Willow was only forty years old but it seemed that she had been the medical examiner since the beginning of time. She had an oval shaped face and creamy ivory skin. Her short golden- brown hair was bluntly cut at her chin, and she had hazel brown eyes which were usually lively but were sorrowful that morning. Willow, jumped out of the coroners van with a scowl on her face, she wasnt in the best mood but under her recent circumstances, she was doing really well. Only last month, she had lost her assistant, Rose. Roselyn Rose Garcia was twenty-five and fresh out of medical school when she begun working at the morgue. Willow had taken it very hard, Rose was HIV positive and died from tuberculosis. The two had been extremely close, Roses parents had died from AIDS when she was just thirteen. Willow had been a parent to the girl without even knowing it. Kalista had seen Rose as a little sister, she was innocent and eager to learn. The two could have passed for biological sisters because of their similar hair color and height. The event had shaken up the entire precinct. Willow, who wore a black pantsuit, trudged through the mass of spectators with a young man trying to keep up behind her. Kalista and Willow were very good friends and often saw each other outside work. But they hadnt seen much of each other because they hadnt had a homicide in a little over a month and Willow dealt with grief on her own. No one could tell if she was really okay or if she was bottling up emotions to later erupt when she was in the privacy of her home. How are you holding up? Kalista asked quietly as Willow crouched near the body. Im trying, Willow replied softly not making eye contact with her but gazing over the deceased. The young man followed Willow and crouched near body, only then did Willow realize she wasnt alone.

12

Sorry, Evans, Jacosta this is Byron Knight my new assistant. The young man smiled nervously and nodded at the two detectives. Its Brent Knightly actually. Kalista felt for the nave boy, he seemed meek and shy. Kalista and Adrian exchanged small smirks then returned their gazes to the body. They knew it was arduous for Willow to adapt to a new assistant but the boy seemed harmless. He had dirty blond hair that flopped in front of his face and hid his eyes. The first thing Kalista and Adrian observed was the white piece of paper folded in her hands. Kalista requested gloves from one of the CSU investigators and she picked it up. Scribbled in what appeared to be blood in quotations were the words Beauty is in the eye of the beholder or the person who took your life. This is strange, hey can you check if this is real blood. Kalista requested then placed the note in an evidence bag that a crime scene unit investigator held open. Thats creepy, Adrian commented as the investigator returned to the surrounding seats searching for evidence that didnt appear to be evident. We could be dealing with a psychopath, or just a creep. Kalista looked around the large but empty stadium, she noticed the absence of the victims shoes and purse and her torn dress at the ornate base. There was also a scuff of dirt near the rip in the gown. Willow tilted the body forward but there were no wounds, lesions or abrasions. The crime scene unit took pictures of the body face side down. While the M.Es turned the body over and begun examining. Grey and Aven came over to Kalista and Adrian after they interviewed the witness who discovered the body. They detectives stared down at the incredibly beautiful girl with pitiful eyes. Kalista was agitated even more when she noticed the zip of the girls dress unzipped at the top. Willow, do me a favor and check for recent sexual activity. Kalista said taking shallow breaths and pacing the steps. She immediately suspected a sexual assault. Willow looked up at them moments later and nodded her head solemnly. So the victim was found by a Faye Barton, Mrs. Barton was taking a jog when she noticed
13

something that didnt belong. She didnt touch the body just ran for help. She said she could tell that the body wasnt breathing and the victim was wet, she said there was rain last night and it must have been there since then. Could the rain have compromised or even eradicate any evidence? Thats the case or this guy is annoyingly meticulous. CSU isnt coming up with anything yet. Okay, Grey maybe you could get the weather report from last night and collaborate with Willow to find a time of death. We know she was there while it was raining so start with that. Aven told Grey who nodded and got on his phone, which had an app for everything. The patrol officers didnt find any ID on her. We have no idea who this girl is. Aven informed them. The body tell us anything yet? They all looked down at the victim. We could rule out robbery, that is some expensive bling. Where did this girl from? Grey asked noticing the girls tennis bracelet. Willow looked for injuries but found none until she pressed her hands over the girls heart and found a knife wound through the pink garment. She raised the bust line of the dress and found a neat knife wound.right over her heart. I got something, the wound is very precise, with one thrust the killer plunged into the heart. Ill know more when I get her on my table but this is the obvious sign of COD. Kalista couldnt help looking down at the victim. She died very gorgeousshe still died though. Shes so young and beautiful, its a damn shame. Habitually, she bit her inner lip and narrowed her eyes on the deceased. So the killer grabs her from behind, she tries to run but her gown gets in the way and he stumps on it ripping it in the process. Safe to say she didnt know her attacker. Kalista theorized. Wedding nearby maybe? Adrian asked. No I think we should focus on a debutante ball, its the season and she is way too dressed up for a wedding. Kalista clarified.

14

I dont want to know how you know that. Grey teased pointing a finger in her face. We should also checkout missing persons from the last forty-eight hours; I bet someone is missing a well-dressed teenage girl. Adrian told them as they watched the body get loaded into the coroners van minutes later. We need to get an ID before we move any further. Aven told his team. Then lets get to it, Evans and I will check missing persons, find out if anybody reported a teenage girl missing recently. I guess Grey and I will check Willow for her finger prints and cause of death. Meet you guys back at the precinct after lunch or well call you when Willow is done. Kalista and Evans drove in agonizing silence and Adrian knew exactly why. Since Willow had confirmed recent sexual activity she had gotten into a mood. If it were one thing that Kalista really didnt like about her job was sexual assault cases and Adrian would feel helpless the entire time. He remembered exactly when it started. Kalista Jocosta downed another vodka tonic and laid her head onto the cool bar counter as the strain of the day fled down on her all at once. Her velvet hair cascaded in front of her face as she felt the rough bar counter come into contact with her flushed right cheek. Immediately after they had collared the murderer she had fled from the precinct, changed into cropped jeans and a purple t-shirt then came to the bar around the corner of her apartment building. Tears had welled up in her eyes and she was on the brink of being consumed by her suppressed emotions. She was way passed her usual limit but who needed inhibitions anyway she thought. The room had started to blur and she remembered why she didnt drink outside her apartment. She trusted the bartender and had known him for five years so she could have passed out and woken up safely in her home or on his couch. The last thing that she remembered before she finished her last drink was feeling a hand on her shoulder and everything had gone black as she dipped in and out of consciousness. She could see the dirty sidewalk flash in front of eyes, the warmth of her apartment and the comfort of her bed. The first thing she remembered when waking the next morning was freshly brewed coffee and the
15

warmth of another body next to hers. The first thing that came into her mind was that she had brought home a man and spent the night with him. She hadnt had a one night stand since college and the thought disgusted her. She opened her eyes and found Adrian Evans sitting up on her bed reading the newspaper. He was fully clothed in his suit from the previous day and his eyes were burned into an article he was reading, his usually tensed lips and furrowed eyebrows looked at ease. She gasped praying to God that she didnt sleep with her partner the night before as if things couldnt get more complicated. She shot up alarmed and scared as he noticed she was awake. Please.pleasewe didnt uh...you know . Uhwhat? Did we sleep together? Whoa no.no no. But I did carry you home just before you passed out in the bar, what the hell were you thinking Kal? Its a good thing I came to check on you, what would have happened to you if I didnt come? Uh, the bartender Harvey, a trusted friend would have taken me home like he always did when I over do it. Oh, still youve been off and even more snippy than usual lately. What do you want from me Adrian? Answers There was genuine concern in his eyes as his intense stare penetrated the protected walls she had built over the years. Kalista sat up on her bed that was now occupied by her partner of one year and a half. She winced in pain as the familiar effects of a hangover kicked in. She held her head for comfort but to avail. Theres a mug of coffee on the nightstand, your special coffee is really good. Kalista looked over at Adrian, it felt too comfortable with him in her bed, they had been getting along great and she found him easy to talk to too. She didnt share a lot about her personal life but felt that Adrian could have been an exception. She felt her chest tighten and the rise and fall of her chest accelerated as she mentally prepared to confess to him. She took the coffee off the nightstand that he had left for her and huddled her knees closer to her body,
16

Adrian watched helplessly as she began to cry silently. It was a coping mechanism; she did it every time she thought about her past and what she had been through. Pain and anger bottled up inside Adrian because he didnt want to believe what she was implying. Their last case had been a rape victim who hunted down her attacker and castrated him, it hadnt taken them long to find her and arrest her. There was some conflict because the young girl was destroyed by her attacker. She admitted it in the interrogation room that seeking revenge had made her even more jaded than before. I was sixteen, her voice was small and frail. She pulled her auburn hair on her shoulder and stroked it gently. No.nodont tell me. he said fighting back his own tears as he noticed the anguish she was in. I was a cheerleader until junior year and practice ran really late one night we were getting ready for a pep rally, the other girls on my squad werent really my friends so I would go home alone, the school was a block or two from my house so I would walk home after practice and reach in like ten minutes. I used to walk to and from school since I was ten. There was never troubleever. My iPod was in my ear so I didnt hear anyone walking behind me. Since nothing had happened to me I was never vigilant. I was pushed behind a Chinese Restaurant. He rapped me from behind. I remember the cold brick wall, the disgusting smell of the garbage from the restaurant. Sometimes I could still feel myself being pushed in the wall and struggling. I felt sick with myself. Every time I closed my eyes I would feel his disgusting breath on my neck. I couldnt get his raspy voice out of my head. He apologized when he was done and said I was just too beautiful to be left alone. I wasnt a virgin before that night but it took years for me to be intimate with anyone after that. I never reported it or even tell my mother until after college, I was too scared and embarrassed to tell anyone then I went into a really dark time after that. I began to cut myself, drinking I really got in with the bad crowd I thought my life was over and I never saw myself as beautiful again I thought it was a curse to be beautiful, the worst there was. He took years of my life away, I started seeing a psychologist and aside from him and my mom youre the only one who knows. Kalista began sobbing into his chest and he pulled her tighter hoping to ease some of the pain that she had inside. He definitely realized that she had a darker side to
17

her but he never imagined that she had experienced something like that and still be the woman who she was today. His stomach clenched up when she begun trembling and shaking. So you havent gone looking for your attacker? If I do then Im going to feel like that helpless 16 year old again. I cant go back to that place Adrian. I know what it would to me. Her tears continued to descend down her cheeks and Adrian Evans had never been more upset with a stranger than he did that morning. You couldnt have blamed yourself. Its not your fault that you have silky auburn hair. Or that your eyes are almost hypnotic, that they see through facades. You had nothing to do with your grace and poise and I wouldnt have you any other way. Adrian looked away from the window and focused on his partner who he knew was going through hell on the inside. Kal Adrian dont, Im going to be fine. Im here for you Kal. He told her only to have her accelerate the car and that was that. Trying to get through to Kalista was like using a desert fork to open a steel gate. He always tried and she always pushed him away. He wanted all of her but she didnt know that. Kal or babe as shes known in the bullpen was surprisingly good at her job. It was extremely hard at first, she was picked up right out of the academy and everyone thought it was because she batted her long eyelashes at the Captain. As if it wasnt hard enough for a young female detective. She had gained her respect as a detective though, by closing every case they spat at her. Her mother was a lawyer and now owned a private law firm for the rich and famous so there was always a sense of law enforcement when she was growing up. When she had been partnered with Adrian, he was a rookie and she had already gained so much respect she was reluctant to open up to him but he had proved himself worthy of her trust and he made it clear to her that he could hold his own in the field and have her back single handedly. The two were often teased about having a secret affair but in reality there were like familyalmost.

18

Back at the precinct, Grey was at his desk beckoning for them to meet him at the white board. Hey, we got an ID. Our victims name is Camilla Raisa. Heir to Raisa Inc, shes nineteen years old. Last night was Camillas younger sisters coming out party and Camilla had apparently ditched before desert. Her mother, Felicia Raisa, reported her missing late last night. Apparently she was the type to stay out all night but they had a rule that she always carry her phone. But we havent found her purse, she could have lost it if she ditched. Adrian said leaning on the nearest desk. Well her mother found her bag and shoes in the bathroom of the hall they rented out and everything else was there but her cell phone. So she must have intentionally ditched the party and carried her phone, I guess our killer took the phone with him or its around our crime scene somewhere but we havent heard anything from forensics so its unlikely. Do we know where she went after she left the party barefoot? Kalista asked Grey who was reading his little notebook. Well Safeco Fields is literally one block away from the ballroom that the Raisas rented out. Franco, Camillas dad, is out of the country and had been for the last week so Felicia and Desiree, her younger sister are coming in later. Aven has been with Willow for the last hour so well have cause of death in no time. What about the bloody note? CSU is still processing. Grey answered her as she bit her inner lip. The day had passed slowly; the crime scene unit wasnt back yet so they didnt have much to go on until they finally got the medical examiners report after four. The morgue was only ten minutes away from precinct so all detectives made it before five. Willow stood at the base of the slab while the detectives stood around the sides. Time of death was between eleven and one a.m. this morning. Cause of death, quite simple, she took a blade directly to her chest, it severed the coronary artery and she bled out within seconds, I could tell you this; your killer is strong and had
19

a pretty good idea how much force to use and exactly where to strike for her heart so they probably have medical training. Also there is some kind of abrasion on her neck, its fresh. Most likely caused by a necklace being ripped from her neck, see the pattern of the links. Willow pointed her gloved finger to the reddish-brown bruise around the victims neck. So the killer moved the body? Grey asked Willow. Thats crazy, maybe the stadium is a secondary crime scene. Grey said looking at his fellow detectives. I dont know Grey, that creepy note that was folded in her hand was probably blood. Aven challenged. Did you do a rape kit? Adrian asked on behalf of Kalista who stared at the lifeless body hypnotically. I did and there were no fluids, but I dont think it was rape. There was no tearing so most likely it was consensual and happened within an hour of her death. Kalista immediately lightened with the news. So the person who she slept with may have been the last person to see her alive? Aven suggested. Did the killer leave anything on the body? he continued drawing his hands into the pockets of his grey work pants. Well, Im not sure if its related but I found traces of some kind of black chalky substance. Id say it was charcoal but I sent it to the lab to be sure, I found it on her shoulder as if someone grabbed her from behind but I didnt get a printmust have worn gloves, also, our debutante wasnt exactly an exemplary character, her toxicology report came back positive for methylenedioxymethamphetamine or MDMA. Which is? Grey asked clueless. Ecstasy. Aven clarified and Willow nodded. Very good detective Brawley. It didnt affect cause of death but she got it from somebody and he may have been the last one to see her alive.

20

Another thing, if the killer ripped off the necklace he most likely took it with him right but we ruled out robbery. The victims tennis bracelet is worth a lot. The necklace must have some kind of sentimental value. Kalista said to the team. So it may not have been a random attack. It was personal maybe. Avens pager went off and he nodded at Kalista and Adrian. Jacosta and Evans the victims family is here, interview them and Grey and I will finish up down here. The detectives nodded and left morgue for the precinct. Felicia and Desiree Raisa sat very quietly in the corner of the interview room. They both wore skirt suits in bright pastels and although Kalista could tell they were normally snobby, they both looked vulnerable and that was enough for her sympathy. Mrs. Raisa was sobbing into a hanky and her daughter Desiree held on to her mothers hand. As Kalista and Adrian sat down she noticed how emotionally vacant Desirees eyes were. She looked more upset that her mother was crying than she was about her sisters murder. She grew up an only child but she knew the dynamics between sisters were complicated. Mrs. Raisa, Im detective Jacosta and this is my partner detective Evans. Were both very sorry for your lost. The woman sniffed and forced a small smile. Even under the tarnished make-up the woman looked very polished, with her shiny blonde hair tied in a knot and crystal blue eyes, she bared an uncanny resemblance to both her children only Desiree was a dark brunette. If its okay wed like to ask you some questions about your daughter. Adrian asked quietly. Its fine, if it helps find who did this to my princess. Adrian glanced at the woman once more before returning to his pocket sized notepad. Did Camilas behavior seem strange last night? No not strange, she obviously didnt want to be there. It was quite normal. Cam hated those kinds of functions. We barely got her to come down from school.

21

Which is? Kalista asked. Seattle Pacific, I had to beg her to come for her sister. Kalista looked over at Desiree who tightened her lips into a straight line. Did Camilla wear a necklace last night? Yes, she always wore it. It was from some club in high school. Kalistas gaze averted back to Desiree who rolled her eyes briefly. Mrs. Raisa, would you excuse us for a minute? Kalista asked as she took Adrian by the forearm and led him out of the interview room. What was that? I want to talk to Desiree alone, the girl looks like its just another day I think shes holding something back. Okay, Ill take Mrs. Raisa to sign the release forms for the body. You have about ten minutes tops. Kalista nodded. When they entered the room Mrs. Raisa had stopped crying. Kalista took her seat across from Desiree and Adrian kept standing. Mrs. Raisa we have some release forms we need you to sign, if you would come with me we could have them cleared up quickly. Mrs. Raisa nodded solemnly. Do you want me to come mom? Desiree asked eagerly as Kalista relaxed into her chair and stared at her intently. Thats okay baby. Ill be back soon. Adrian exchanged glances with Kalista confirming her suspicion. When Adrian and Mrs. Raisa left the room, Kalista let a minute pass by in silence as she observed the young girl. Desiree avoided eye contact for the entire minute until Kalista finally spoke. So were you and your sister close? Uhh, yeah we were. Like total best friends. Kalista nodded as she watched the girl look around the room.

22

Really, I dont have any sisters but when I was younger I had friends who did and they would always fight. Well not us. Desiree said loudly. She was too busy pissing people off to have time to fight with me. She mumbled under her breath. What do you mean by that? Kalista pressed on. She didnt think that Desiree was the killer; Willow said that the killer was strong and Desiree couldnt be more than ninety pounds. She did think that she knew more about her sister that her mother wouldnt say. Camilla was the meanest person ever. Am I upset that shes dead, yes. Am I going to miss her, no. She loved attention and our parents always gave it to her no matter what she would do. When I was younger she used to tell me that I was adopted because I was brunette and everybody else was blonde. She couldnt let me have my one night, I knew she was gonna run off and ruin my night. Did she tell you she was leaving? No, she began dancing on her table barefoot until I convinced her to go check her make-up. I followed her to the bathroom to tell her to knock it off and I overheard her on the phone with someone. She said she was leaving now and too meet her there. Do you know who she might have been talking to? No, I didnt care to find out. Im honestly happy that shes DEAD! Kalista was shocked at just how much Desiree resented her sister. Adrian and Mrs. Raisa came back within the next minute and they left after Adrian asked the final questions. It was pitch black outside when the detectives sat at their desk recapping the information they had just received when Grey and Aven came back from a coffee run. What did the family have to say? Aven asked his detectives. Well, they didnt know anyone who would want to hurt Camilla but from what the sister told me, Camilla was very nasty and didnt have a lot of fans. She
23

overheard Camilla on the phone confirming plans to meet someone, somewhere. We know the location, Safeco fields but what we dont know is who. Well we know that somebody supplied her with ecstasy and that she had sex right before she died. Could her dealer and her lover be one and the same? Grey asked. Its possible but I asked Mrs. Raisa when I took her to sign the release forms and she said she didnt know if Camilla was seeing anybody. She did however give me the name of Camillas roommate Chelsea King. She said if anyone knew what was going on in her life it was Chelsea. Aven sighed then looked at his watch. All right we could pick up in the morning, Jocosta and Evans you go talk to Chelsea King in the morning and Grey and I will check CSU. Goodnight guys, I-uh gotta go tenderize some meat for Saturday. Aven waved at his colleagues then headed out. Hey Kal, Grey she replied skeptically as she noticed the mischievous glint in his eyes as he gathered his keys and jacket from his desk. If you ever want to hook me up with some of your old friends from the most beautiful club in high school, dont hesitate. Kalista and Adrian giggled uncontrollably at Greys desperation. So is that a yes? Grey persisted. Good night Grey. Kalista said melodiously peeking up from the coroners report. He winked at her and left. Was that club even real? Adrian asked, Kalistas past was very vague. He knew why but there were a lot of things that she didnt share. Kalistas smile faded, As real as the air we breathe. High school was a different time for me. I was a different person. I was one of thooose girls. What girls? Adrian pressed on. He jumped at any chance she would be in a sharing mood. Kalista knew every detail about him, even the ones he didnt know about himself and he felt that every day he was learning something about her.

24

I was beautiful and I knew it, and I made everybody else feel bad because they didnt have my beautiful eyes or my full lips. She chuckled and shook her head and Adrian could see how much she regretted the person she used to be. Well youre not that person today. Adrian reassured her. Kalista met his eyes and the pain was evident behind her almond shaped orbits. Every day I think that if I was humble in high school then maybe Kalista froze mid-sentence as she tried to control the tears that threatened to escape her eyes. Adrian gently sat on her desk and touched the right side of her face. Her slightly tanned skin looked bleached and felt ice cold to the touch. Kal what he did to you wasnt your fault. Her restraint defied her and a lone tear slowly descended on her cheek. Wasnt it? He said I was too beautiful to be left alone. She said almost inaudibly as she quickly dried her eyes and returned her gaze back to the medical examiners file. Adrian returned to his desk knowing that she was done talking about it. It was agonizing for him; he didnt know that her past still haunted her that much. She had no peace and if it were one thing about Kalista, she didnt like to be pushed to talk about her past it was probably why he only had snippets of her life, because he would never push her. It didnt change the fact that he wanted her to lean on him, if she would only let him completely. Adrian flipped his keys into his hand and watched as Kalista sat motionless staring at the manila file in her hands. Kal its already after ten, you should get some rest. His words drew her out of her daze. I think Im gonna stay back a little and work on the case. Adrian watched her face intently and knew that this case was bothering her. He nodded then sat back down. What are you doing? Were partners; now tell me whats on your mind? Kalista gave him a small smile. She was constantly in awe of his consideration.
25

This entire case has got me in a knot. I want to believe that there was a primary crime scene but I cant find any evidence that the body was moved. Adrian we havent seen anything like this. The worse we dealt with was that schizophrenic guy who killed his wife and had tea with her every morning. This is moresomethings not right. I just have that gut feeling that its not just black and white. Well get him Kal, like we always do. Adrian reassured her giving her hand a squeeze before fixing them both a cup of coffee because it was going to be a long night.

26

Chapter four- Not the Swan Lake. Grace and poise, she glides across the stage with such ease. She brings tears to my eyes at one point. Its different this time because I like it. I feel light, like Im floating. Floating just like how she floats across that stage. The audience is dimly lit and the stage is illuminated with bright lights. She cant see me, no one can, no one ever does. I cant seem to look away and when the curtain is drawn I am enraged. I want to watch her dance forever. I wait outside forever, the night is cold and I didnt wear a proper jacket so Im freezing. But I still wait for her. The crowd gets smaller and smaller until its just me, like in my head. My eyes finally find her, I could never miss her. Her dark hair was pulled into a bun and it revealed her olive skin. I feel better tonight because of how I saw her tonight. Beautiful and graceful, like a white swan. I approach her and her dark eyes double in size. I think she is excited to seem but Im wrong again. She retreats as if Im a plague and she says bad things about me. This time is different because I dont regret it when I reach for her and plunge into her chest. She drops to the ground and I kneel beside her. I want to tell her Im sorry but shes gone. I want to cry because she looks so perfect, shes so beautiful but the things she saidthey reminded me of her. I long for her to wake up now, I want her to get and be beautiful and graceful again but I know its never going to happen. Shes isnt a swan and this is not the swan lake.

Chapter Five- Beauty is a short-lived tyranny. The next morning was a busy Wednesday. March was usually a slow month but everybody was working on this case that their best homicide squad couldnt solve. Kalista and Adrian had a very early morning despite their late night. They drove to Seattle Pacific to interview Camillas best friend and roommate after learning from Grey and Aven that the crime scene unit didnt turn up with much. The only thing they knew about the charcoal was that it was expensive and of really good quality but very common. The blood from the note matched the victims but it was the only trace found on the note. Chelsea king was tucked into the corner of her twin size bed with a hello kitty blanket tucked around her. It was either for comfort or warmth because of the misty rain outside. Adrian, who wore a navy blue suit and stripped tie, sat on the folded in chair that was placed under the white desk in the center of the small dorm room. The room was a soft yellow and had only one window near Chelseas bed. Kalista sat at the edge of the girls bed as she passed her a tissue from the box that lay on the floor. Chelsea, were you and Camilla close? Chelsea nodded briefly and smiled. Her brunette hair was pulled into a messy ponytail and her hazel brown eyes were puffy and red. Cam didnt have a lot of friends, some people thought she was a bitch but she loved life and nobody could get her down. Chelsea did you know anyone who would want to harm Camilla? Adrian asked the girl from the middle of the room. Like I said, she didnt have a lot of friends. A lot of people didnt like her but nobody would want to actually kill her. And what about relationships, do you know if she was involved with anybody? Well yes and no, Cam and my twin brother Brennan were going out but Cam said she was going to break it off with him. Apparently she had this mysterious new guy she was into.

28

Brennan, do you know where we can find him? You dont think Brennan did it, the guy adored Cam. He actually was her date for her sisters party. He might be at work; he works in the schools library. You said something about a mystery guy; do you have any idea who it might be? The young girl shrugged her shoulders and Kalista could tell she really didnt know who it was. Whoever he is, shes been talking to him nonstop over MySpace. Her laptop got a virus and she sent it to IT so shes been using mine. Chelsea we may have to take your computer for a little while. Take it. Cam was a lot of things but she didnt deserve to be murdered. The detectives finished up with Chelsea and went in pursuit of her twin brother. So Cam breaks up with Brennan and he kills her its ridiculous but he may have been the last one to see her alive? I dont think so; if its a crime of passion then the weapon would have been a weapon of opportunity unless this Brennan guy is a creep and walks around with a large knife in his man purse. I still wanna talk to this guy; he may have some insight into Camillas last days alive. Should be here. He said pointing to the small campus library. Kalista and Adrian were directed to the back of the library by the computers where they found Brennan King staring at a montage of pictures of their victim. This is guy is class A creepy. Kalista whispered to Adrian as they approached the victim. Brennan King? Kalista touched the boy gently on his shoulder. Im detective Jocosta this is my partner Evans. Brennan looked nothing like his sister. His face was longer and his brunette hair was five shades lighter than Chelseas. His eyes were dark and small and almost sunk into his head. Is this about Cam? he sobbed as his tears fell.

29

Why dont we take this outside? Adrian suggested when he realized they had an audience. As they walked behind Brennan both detectives noticed his sagged shoulders and bowed head. He was clearly genuinely grieving the loss of Camilla Raisa. Brennancould you tell us about the last time you spoke to Camilla? The frail boy took a few seconds before answering the question. Cam asked me to go to her sisters coming out party. She said it would make the experience less painful. I was excited.you know I thought-thought it was another big step in our relationship. I had never been in the same place as her family before. I was so stu-pid. Why? She dumped me! Brennan shouted. His eyes flared and he balled his fist. I was so angry; I followed her to the stadium and saw her banging tha. Wait a sec, you saw her with someone? Brennan nodded his head slowly. Would you be able to describe him to a sketch artist? Yeah I guess, I cant forget something like that. You guys think that that guy killed my Cam? Its possible. Youre gonna need to come down to the precinct with us. Lemme just tell my supervisor. Brenna disappeared into the library doors. You think the sketch will get us an ID? Adrian asked softly. I hope so. We need a break in this case and her mystery lover is our only suspect right now. Youve seen him I doubt he knows what ecstasy even looks like. Kalista sighed. And you do? Adrian called her on her tongue slip.
30

I do, its usually blue but comes in any color with a pattern that can vary etched on the surface. Detective, youve popped ecstasy? Adrian was grinning at his partner. In high school so that doesnt really count because everybody does stupid things in high school. She defended her honor with a smug expression. I didnt, PleaseI know you boy scout. Kalistas smile faded when her phone buzzed in her pocket and she read the text. I LOVE HOW YOUR HAIR LOOKS IN THE MORNING LIGHT. She instinctively looked around her surroundings but found no one suspicious. It wasnt the first time she had gotten attention form a secret admirer, it had been happening her entire life but she found the text chilling. She wasnt crazy about the idea that someone was watching her either. Everything okay? Adrian snapped her back to reality. Fine! The last thing she needed was Adrian in overprotected mode.

It was late that Tuesday evening when they released the sketch of Camillas mystery lover. Chelseas computer came up a brick wall. The lab technicians were able to trace the IP address but it was at a cyber caf and the manager could not shed light. This case was stumping on the precincts best detectives. That Saturday, as the sun warmed the skins of the detectives in Avens backyard they found themselves going over the case again. It was bothering everyone else just as much as it was bothering Kalista. So what do we have? Grey asked sitting back and bringing his beer with him. There were white tables with five chairs scattered around the large backyard. Paper plates and plastic cup were stacked on them with crumpled napkins and used straws.

31

Well the sister Desiree was jealous and angry at her sister. We have Brennan the ex-boyfriend. Adrian said finishing his potato salad. He was in love with her.the strongest motive I know of. Right Brennan claims to have loved Cam but that just may be the motive after she dumped him and finally her mystery lover and possible drug dealer, no one else who had contact with her that night supplied her with ecstasy. So it has to be him. Grey contributed. Well his face is all over the news, hell turn up. Somebody has to know him. Aven mustered, he wore knee high khaki pants and a grey flannel shirt. Come on, you workaholics. No discussing cases. Francine said as she wrapped her arms around Avens neck from behind and kissed his cheek. The woman was radiant and graceful, that evening her blonde hair was held up in a ponytail and she wore a white sundress with spaghetti straps. You heard the woman. Grey said finishing his beer and smiling at her. You know Grey, my friend Karen is here and she is newly single. Francine said pointing to a petite brunette woman in a yellow shirt across the yard. Shes cute. Kalista told him watching the woman from their table. Whats up with everybody tryna pimp me out? Their table immersed in laughter. I can find a woman on my own. Sure you can buddy. Adrian mocked him. Your sarcasm is not appreciated Adrian. Grey rebutted. Wow Kal, I love your dress. Francine complimented Kalistas mint green summer dress. It was strapless with a maternity band under the breast line and it ended above her knees with an ornate hem. Thank you. Kalista said warmly as she played with her low sided ponytail that lay on her left shoulder. Come on guys help me bring out the rest of the coolers before these women drag us into the conversation about shiny nail polish and we lose our man-hood. Aven said getting up from the table as the others followed him.
32

Kalista giggled as Francine pulled the chair next to her. The two women were very good friends despite the age gap. Kalista looked up to Francine. She was genuine and warm, things that Kalista valued in her friends. So how are you hon? Ive had better weeks. Kalista said giving her a strained smile. Big case huh, I could tell its bothering Aven too. Kalista nodded. How does he get through it? Honey, thats what Im here for. When youve got a real good man, the least you could do is be there for him wherever, whenever, forever. At least thats what I think marriage entails, its worked for the last fifteen years. Kalistas smile brightened up as she listened to the woman talk. You know Grey is looking for someone. I mean he tells Aven that he may be ready to settle down. You guys would make some really good looking children. Kalista laughed hysterically. There were so many things wrong with that sentence she thought. Grey and Inever going to happen. Kalista said shaking her head violently. Why not? Francine asked. I heard he has a thing for you. Francine said, well in tuned with the bullpen gossip. He did, when he just transferred but we talked it out and were just good friends. Ah. I hear you. Francine said unconvincingly. Besides, I would never go for someone who I work with. Big hazard. But if you had too, I guess youd prefer Adrian wouldnt you. Francine pressed on as they stared at the guys over the cooler with beers in their hands on the other side of yard deeply engrossed in a conversation. Thats even crazier. I love him too much to ever do that to him. Hes the perfect partner and going there would ruin everything. Hes my best friend and I know that I could never cross that line.
33

Francine smiled at the younger woman with narrowed eyes. What? Kalista questioned the womans peculiar look. I know that, and you know that, but does he? she said as Adrian met Kalistas eyes from across the yard and gave her a small smile. Kalista held his gaze and couldnt answer Francines question as she didnt know the answer herself. So tell me, whats the hazard of dating someone you work with. Our job is never easy and when youre in the field youre already terrified for your partners safety more than your own. What Im saying is if those partners were to become romantically involved it would amplify all those feelings and maybe even falter your judgment in the field. Speaking from experience? NoI just thought about it a lot. Kalista whispered, her eyes were already glassy. Come on, Francine coaxed as they walked over to them. Nice of you ladies to join us, so you guys gotta hear this joke my buddy told me last weekend. Grey said between chuckles. Okay so a ballerina Just as Greys joke was about to reach its inappropriate punch-line, Kalista heard her name and felt two small hands around her waist. It was one of Avens twin boys, Aaron. Kal, Aarons soft voice called. Yes. Kalista humored the boys as she got down to eye level with them. We picked these for you. Aiden said revealing the small bunch of flowers tied with a pink bow. Why thank you, Ill cherish them forever. She said smiling as she stuck her cheek out for two kisses that they gladly gave.

34

The yard was filled with awws at the boys gesture. They then ran into their fathers arms as the strong man picked up both of them in his arms. Looks like were raising some suave gentlemen. Francine said while laughing at her children. They looked a lot like their father except they had Francines blonde hair but it looked darker every time Kalista saw them. Grey took Aaron from Avens arms. Kalista is my girlfriend uncle Grey. Aaron declared. They all laughed at the boys confidence. The bar-b-q continued for several more hours, it was after seven when the party was well over when the detectives pagers rang. Aven was putting his children to sleep. Grey had just arrived home and was shedding his attire. Kalista and Adrian were at an overnight grocery store shopping like they did every Saturday. The night sky was especially dark that night when the team arrived in a suburban neighborhood. Maybe it was the murder or maybe it was just that chilly outside. They crossed the tape simultaneously and stood gaped before the bloody crime scene. Leaned against a tree was a young beautiful brunette girl positioned exactly like Camilla Raisa. She wore a white leotard and pinned unto her chest was a similar bloody note that was left on Camilla Raisa, except it read Beauty is a short-lived tyranny. As Kalista saw the bloody mess in front of her she felt dizzy and nauseous all at once. She had been in front of dead bodies for over seven years but this one threw her off balance almost literally. She instinctively grabbed Adrians forearm for support. Who the hell are we dealing with? Kalista asked Adrian breathlessly.

35

Chapter six- Killers and Profilers. Willow and Brent arrived ten minutes after Aven and his team did. They were just as shocked to see the crime scene. Five minutes after Willow begun, the questions came flying out the detectives mouths. Is it her blood? Kalista asked quietly still stunned from the horrific scene. Willow examined a neat knife wound over the victims chest. I cant be sure; Ill send a sample to the crime lab most likely, same precise wound as Camilla Raisa. Look at that, Brent said as he pointed to a branch of the tree. A large tote bag hung freely from the branch. Adrian beckoned a crime scene unit guy and borrowed gloves. In the bag was a change of clothes, a pair of jeans and a hooded jacket. Her wallet was also among the contents. Adrian took it out and identified the victim. Her name is Kerry Jackson. Shes twenty-two. This could be a serial killer. Grey reach out to the databases and see if anybody recognizes his MO, Adrian check with CSU they may finally have some forensics from the first scene. Kal youre with me. Lets go talk to the victims family and see if there is a connection between Camilla Raisa and Kerry Jackson. Willow are you good here? Aven asked the woman who was closely studying the body. Fine, Ill have something for you by the end of the day. The team scattered into their assigned task. It was now urgent because they all wanted to bring this killer to justice. They worked through the weekend and the Monday morning, they thought they finally had something solid, but they were in for a bigger surprise. Okay so what have we got so far? Aven asked at the white board with a black marker in his left hand. His dusty hair was tussled and his green tie was undone around his grey suit.

36

Well forensics on our first victim, Camilla Raisa. Her clothes came up empty. Whoever this guy is, he is extremely meticulous. Forensics on Kerry Jackson the blood on the note was hers. The paper matches from both scenes but they have nothing to match it to. Adrian added from his desk adjacent to an unusually quiet Kalista. And what about the second victim? Aven continued to scribble notes onto the white board. Well Kerry Jackson was a dancer. The night she was killed she was in a showcase. We found her in a white leotard and tutu. That means she was killed right after the show because she would have changed. There was a change of clothes in her bag. The showcase was at the community center near the tree where we found her body. Weve confirmed that she did dance at the center. Grey reported. Kalista still sat lost in thought as she tried to put the pieces of the puzzle together. She found this especially difficult, there werent enough puzzle pieces and she was afraid that another woman might die before she would have enough to see the big picture. Kal talked to Kerry Jacksons family. There dont seem to be any obvious connection to Camilla Raisa. So we can assume these women were chosen at random but they did try to put it nicely that Kerry had an attitude problem kinda a bitch. Similar to what we heard about Camilla Raisa. She didnt have many friends either. Im gonna dig deeper and see if their lives overlap anywhere. Ill consult with a lab technician. Grey said. What are the missing pieces? Kalista finally spoke. Well Camillas mystery lover is still evading us. What do these girls have that the killer would want to kill them? Could we be dealing with a psychopath? Aven asked frustrated with the blank spaces on the whiteboard. Our two victims? What do they have in common? Theyre both really beautiful and had terrible attitudes. Was anything missing from Kerry Jacksons bag? Kalista asked as if in a trance.

37

No, but her ballet shoes are missing. Do you think our killer took it? Well he may be taking personal items from victims as his trophies. Camillas cell phone was missing and her mother said she always had her phone with her. I dont think this killer is done. In fact I think hes just begun. Kalista buried her face behind the CSU report once more and completely zoned out. Just then Captain Donavon submerged from his office with another man at his toe. He wore a crisp black suit with a baby blue tie inside. The stranger had an oval shaped face and a strong jaw line. He had short blonde hair that was neatly combed over and pale blue eyes. He stood around 64 and had deep dimples when he smiled. He stood next to the captain with his hands in his pockets. Detectives, this is FBI agent Mason Scott, he is a criminal profiler for the FBI. He recognized the MO of your recent DBs and will be working with you from here on. I expect that you give him your full cooperation. Captain said loudly hoping to get the attention of Kalista behind the manila folder. He shook his head and retreated to his office when she didnt respond. Listen, Im not here to take over your case. I look forward to working with you all. Masons voice was deep and sharp. Aven outstretched his hand and was surprised when the man said, Aven Brawley, I know. Its my business to know. You must be Grey Hayward, you Adrian Evans, and you Kalista Jocosta. Mason said shaking hands. Kalista finally surfaced when the man mispronounced her name. Its pronounced, Kah-lee-stah. She said placing the file on her desk and finally looking the stranger into his eyes. My apologies, he said almost transfixed by Kalistas beauty. His eyes squinted and his head tilted as he held her gaze, Kalista quickly rolled her eyes and looked away. She was very much over men and their stares; it happened every day when you looked like she did. Aven, Grey and Adrian watched the scene and knew exactly what was happening as it happened to all of them the first time they had laid eyes on her. Kalista was probably the most gorgeous woman they had ever seen. It wasnt just her look but her presence. She was confident but not arrogant and you could tell instantly that there was innocence and grace behind her eyes.
38

Her main attractions were her grey eyes. They held your attention and you could stare into them all day. Agent Scott, what about our victims caught your attention? Kalista said breaking the awkwardness as Grey tried to contain his laughter. Ugh right. I believe your killers hunting ground used to be Washington D.C. Late last year; there was a series of murders. Park Wu, a beautiful sushi chef. Dana Marsden a beautiful accountant. Kimberly Love, a beautiful bartender and Jada Fitch a beautiful sketch artist. We were stomped from the lack of forensic evidence. He killed four women then it stopped around Christmas time. And I guess it resumed last week. So Im thinking, if we work together, between you and me we can catch this killer. Aven nodded and looked around at his team who nodded their approval as well. Were in. He used a led pencil to write those bizarre quotes about beauty him using blood tells us that he is evolving and becoming more violent. Also we kept the story out of the tabloids and news because he wants to be famous, he wants us to take the time and come up with a ridiculous name for him. He wants groupies and people to write books about him and when we succeeded in stifling his attention the killings stopped. We were grateful that no one else was being murdered but it also hindered our investigation until it went cold.

Later that evening, approaching seven, Kalista, Adrian, Grey, Aven and Mason sat in the precinct analyzing every crime scene picture, autopsy report and witness statements from all the cases starting back from September of 2011. My team and I developed a profile. This is a male assailant, between the ages of twenty-five to thirty-five. He is most likely Caucasian and can blend into any setting without standing out. He may have a permanent job. Nothing too time consuming but it pays well. He is obviously very intelligent and has medical history. He stalks his victims before he kills them; he learns their habits and patterns. He is the most dangerous of killers.

39

Why is that? Grey asked, as they all listened intently, well all but Kalista who was transfixed by the crime scene photos. Because he is a chameleon, the victims pass him on the street without a second glance. He does not appear as a threat of any kind. So why does he kill? Well to answer that question, we focused on the victimology. Who does he kill? Women, Beautiful women. Now usually serial killers undergo abuse in their preadolescentto adolescent years. We think that he may have been bullied when he was a child. He was most likely an outcast in school. He was probably taunted by attractive people and more specifically scorned by beautiful girls. He hates alpha females and is jealous of their superiority. He feels inadequate in his everyday life and feels powerless, now this changes when he kills. He may have been rejected by beautiful women his entire life and it probably started with his mother. He kills to feel powerful; he kills out of jealousy, anger and disgust. Mason spoke with such confidence that even non-believers of profiling would believe. He accumulated his confidence from ten years on the job. Mason Scott was a celebrated criminal profiler in the FBI. This case had been the only one he couldnt crack which made him all the more determined to find the killer. Kalista remained quiet the rest of the night as she silently looked over the case files from the murders in Washington D.C. She wanted to be familiarized with the previous cases in order to move on. It was minutes to eleven when they decided to wrap it up and pick up early in the morning. Kal did you find something? Adrian asked her and the men rose from their chairs preparing to leave. Kalista looked up from her folder; her grey eyes were beaming with something that Adrian had never recognized, it was unsettling that he couldnt nag her expression. Honestly Im not sure. She said biting the cover of her black ink pen.

40

Hey you guys know where I can get a bite to eat? Mason Scott asked the locals. Yeah, Sashas diner its a couple blocks from here. Im actually heading there, you can follow me. Grey suggested. Ill join you guys. Adrian said as he put on his coat. Kalista sat where she was and started to scribble on a yellow post it. What about you, detective Jocosta? Mason asked her as she caught his eyes in the low light of the bullpen after hours. As Kalista opened her mouth to form the words, they came out of Adrians mouth before. She doesnt eat fast food. Adrian said and Kalista smiled and nodded her head. You one ofem gals who are health conscious arent yah? Mason pressed on. Kalista looked up at Mason with questioning eyes, she didnt know what he wanted from her, well she knew she just thought she had made it clear that she didnt want to go there. Shes allergic to everything. Grey said from behind Kalistas chair. He grabbed her shoulder and kissed the top of her head. Get home safe babe. Grey said being the first to leave. Adrian and Kalista looked at each other as they spoke with their eyes. He nodded at her and left at Grey heels. Everything? Mason asked and Grey slowed down. Eggs, peanuts, Grey begun to list. Nuts from trees, soya, Aven continued. Wheat, shellfish, gluten Adrian continued. The list goes on. Kalista said humoring her colleagues. Grey laughed and headed out followed by Adrian. Goodnight detective. Mason said softly as he followed the men outside. Aven stayed behind a little and gathered his belongings. He leaned against Kalistas desk before making his exist.
41

Youre on to something arent you? Aven said as he gestured to her clustered desk. I think I am. She said as she looked up to Aven. He smiled at her and nodded his head. I trust you babe, see ya tomorrow okay. Kay, tell Francine I said hello. Will do. Kalista was left in solitude. The only people in the precinct were the guards and a few uniform officers. She was focused on the crime scene photos, they were very similar to the cases now. Park Wu was found in her restaurant leaned on the bar counter, her note read To love beauty is to see light, consider your light out. Kalista sighed loudly and leaned back in her chair as her findings had started to make sense. Her light blue shirt was three buttons open and knee her high black pencil skirt was hiked up as she propped her legs up. She heard footsteps behind her and turned around instinctively to find Willow approaching her. The womans beautiful hazel brown eyes looked glassy and her short light brown hair was charmingly tussled along with her opened white coat that revealed a purple pants suit with a lilac shirt inside. Hey babe, still working the case. Willow greeted her quietly. Kalista didnt know her nicknames would catch on that quickly. She used to call everybody babe when she had just joined homicide. Yeah, there is an odd coincidence that I think I may have some insight in to. Then you follow it, this killer is needs to be caught. So Kalista looked up slowly at Willow with a smile, who looked amused with a mischievous sparkle in her eyes. What? Kalista questioned playfully. I heard theres a fed on the case. Willow said sitting on Kalistas desk.

42

So what? What do you mean so what? Is he hot? I bet hes hot, the feds are always hot. Well hes not hideous Kalista started as Willow released a little laugh and hunched over like a teenage girl gossiping. Do tell Blond hair, blue eyes, dimples, six foot four, I think. Well at least you dont work with him so it wont get complicated. Whoa whoa, whoa. Who said I liked him? And another thing we do work together, were working this case. That doesnt matter, we know he likes you. Look at you babe. And another thing, the case wont go on forever hopefully. When you find the killer you can have some fun. Seriously babe, you took the fun out of your work with your rule about not dating your co-workers. What have you got to lose? Youre right Willow look at me. The guy doesnt need to know my last name but looked at me like I was a piece of meat. Im just another beautiful woman Willow. Besides my pit bulls will never let him get that close. I didnt know you had dogs? Willow said oblivious to her metaphor. I meant Adrian, Grey and Aven. Willow nodded and released a small chuckle. Youre absolutely, right. You have a really good team babe. Theyre always gonna look out for you. Kalista smiled as Willow squeezed her hands and got up to leave. How are you doing? Really. Willow sighed and shrugged. Some days are better than others I guess. Get some rest babe. Dont count on it. Kalista called after the woman as she left.

43

Chapter seven - The beautiful detective. Kalista bought Willow breakfast the next morning. She didnt go home and got about an hour or two of sleep on her desk. She brought Willow breakfast and was searching for the woman when she bumped into Brent. Kalista knew she wasnt going to enjoy their meeting when she saw the spark in his eyes. It was a notion she had learned to recognize and evade. Detective Jocosta, can I talk to you for a moment. Kalista felt her stomach churn. She was labeled as the ice-queen. It seemed that there were an infinite number of men she had turned away. They didnt know her, they saw and well that was all that they need to do. Can I just say that you are the most beautiful woman Ive ever met. Brent was young and nave, she knew he hadnt been working with them long enough to learn that he should stay clear of her. Brent, I know what youre gonna say. Dont argue with me because Ive heard it all before. Dont go there okay, I beg of you. Can you see that Willow gets this? She placed the white paper bag in his hands and almost ran out of the morgue. That was probably top shelf of the most disturbing conversations she has ever had.

Kalista came out of from the locker rooms to find her colleagues settling in along with Mason Scott who wore a fresh green work shirt and black slacks. Kalista had to admit to herself that he looked very handsome. With them working on the case she hadnt really notice how good looking he was and intelligent. He nodded at Kalista and she smiled briefly at him which didnt go unnoticed to her colleagues. Kalista knew her colleagues cared about her but she didnt realize just how much. They always kept an eye on her without making her feel like she wasnt capable of taking care of herself because she was female. It did change the dynamics of their relationship, because she was the only female detective they worked closely with. She had a different relationship each of them. She and Grey had the most playful and relaxed relationship. She saw Grey like an ex-boyfriend who she became really good friends with. They were almost the same age and they were both big flirts. Aven on the other was her mentor who cared deeply for her as if she were his first

44

born child. As for Adrian their partnership was a constant struggle. It was becoming difficult trying not to fall in love with your partner. The more time they spent together and the closer they got, they were edging on dangerous ground. Kal tell me you didnt stay here the entire night. Aven scolded. As the senior detective and oldest he saw Kalista as a little daughter and was just as worried about her as if she were on of his children. Kalista looked back from the white board and smiled nervously. I wont tell you. Adrian looked at her and they both smiled as he handed her his coffee. Their eyes doing the greetings as Kalista accepted the coffee. I think I know how he chooses his victims. Kalista announced in front of the white board. Everyone in the room could see how sleep deprived and exhausted she looked. Her usual intense eyes looked distant and were tainted red. Her auburn hair was tussled into a messy ponytail instead of lazy curls on her back. Well? Mason Scott prompted. I searched deeper for a common thread and I think I found it after rudely waking the victims families and friends. Camilla Raisa and Kerry Jackson went to the same gym. Theres more you guys remember that club I told you about? The guys nodded only to have Mason stick his hand up and protest that he had no idea what she spoke of. Well back in high school, I found a small box inside my locker. It was a beautiful petite silver box. And inside it was this bracelet and note that said BEAUTY IS A GIFT THAT YOU BESTOW. JOIN US TBPC. The TBPC? Mason asked still clueless. The beautiful people club. Kalista said. Mason looked even more confused. Its this club that selects really beautiful people. I dont really know what else the club entails because I ignored the request, it was my senior year and I was over the whole beautiful thing but I do remember they sent me a link to their website where I found post from our two victims. Good job Jocosta. Mason said obviously impressed.

45

Kalista pointed at him and smiled. Gather around children. She joked as she sat at her desk and touched two keys on her keyboard. The website; its a way for the club members to be in touch with other clubs around the country. Now check this out. Kalista said as she pointed to the monitor which showed a picture of club PINK. Now look under it, some of the comments belong to our victims. Camilla Raisa and Kerry Jackson a.k.a heiress17 and balletluv13, their screen names, the club members hang-out spot is club PINK. Look, heiress17 said that she would be there and balletluv13 said she wouldnt miss it. Now this is the spot for Seattle but I bet that there was a different place for Washington D.C so I looked through some of the pictures and found THE LOVE NEST. Yes I know of it. Its a very popular longue in Washington. So you think he used to go there to choose his victims, stalks and kills them. Mason nodded his head at her and smiled. Detective Jocosta you just cracked this case wide open. He said to her and Grey shook her by the shoulder. Good job babe. He praised her. Maybe we should go there tonight, and interview the bartender and regulars. And well go without announcing that were cops. We dont want to scare the killer off. Agreed, but well see you back here around six, because you are going home to get some sleep. Aven commanded the young detective. Kalistas lips were about move to demand that she stay when Aven looked at Adrian who got up and jingled his keys in front of her face. Kal, Adrian said sternly and she shrugged and grabbed her jacket like a mischievous teenager. Fine Ill go. Come on Im driving. Adrian suggested as she followed him out. Aven shook his head as they left. So, Evans and Jocosta. Mason begun the conversation they all knew, they were going to have with him eventually.
46

Yeah Grey humored the man. Theyre an item? Grey looked at Aven and the men shook their heads no. Kalista and Adrian are a lot of things and their partnership is complicated but there not an item. Aven clarified. Mason nodded and left for Captain Donavons office. Grey leaned back in his chair and looked at Aven as the men laughed a little at the situation. Poor fella, has no idea what hes getting himself into. Aven said as the chuckle developed into a laugh. How could two people who are so right for each other be in so much denial? Thats Evan and Jocosta alright.

Kalista and Adrian drove in silence, mostly because Kalista was exhausted and dipping in and out of consciousness as her head relaxed on the head rest. He stopped abruptly in front of her apartment building and looked over at her sleeping face. He stroked her auburn hair and tucked lose strands behind her ear in an attempt to wake her up. Kalista stirred in her sleep as she felt a warm hand on her face. She opened her eyes and blinked rapidly as she found Adrians dark eyes staring back her. In their five year partnership she had never seen him look that handsome. His eyes were alert and his dark eyes glinted with something mysterious behind them. His sun kissed complexion glowed and look radiant under the sunlight of the early morning. And his lips, they were curved into a small smile as he stared at her intently. Youre home Kal, Ill pick you up five thirty okay. He spoke softly at her as if reading her a night time story. Kay five thirty, see ya then. She said just as softly as she drowsily got out of the car. Adrian blew his horn before speeding off back to the precinct.

47

As promised Adrian picked Kalista up half past five. He smiled as he saw her approach the black sedan. She looked rested and rejuvenated. She wore dark denim jeans and an emerald sweater that complimented her dark hair, leather brown boots and her hair was cascaded over both shoulders and down her back. Adrian nodded his head when she entered the car, he loved her unique scent. Whatever blend of shampoo, body wash and perfume she mixed was unique and very Kalista he thought. You look better, he said as he pulled away from the curb. I feel better; Im finally at ease since we caught this case. I feel like weve finally caught a break you know. We have you to thank for that Ms. All-nighter. He looked over and smiled but she was transfixed by the evening glow of the sky outside her window. Lets just hope we get this guy before he kills again. Thank me when hes behind bars. Will do. Kalista and the others met at the precinct then left for club PINK together. They were in a cable van parked outside the club when Aven gave orders. Okay Adrian you take the side entrance and discreetly talk to some locals. Grey and I will be at the bar. Mason no offense but you look like a cop so you and Jocosta watch the front entrance and keep us updated. Why do I have to stay in the van? Im way more social than any of you. Kalista bragged as she pointed a finger at her colleagues. Well Ill try not be offended, anyway this guy is targeting beautiful women. I will feel a lot better knowing youre locked in a van. Aven said looking at Grey and Adrian who nodded their heads in an agreement. Dont do anything I wouldnt do kids. Grey teased. Well that doesnt leave me a lot of options now does it Grey. Kalista rebutted and received a chuckle from him. Go on before you attract attention. Kalista warned until the detectives left. Adrian looked back at her before they moved on.
48

He was worried about Kalista and Mason. He didnt like Mason Scott mainly because he was interested in Kalista. She rarely dated but whenever she did he would feel overwhelmed and jealousy. It wasnt for the obvious reasons but he had grown so close to her and had invested so much in their partnership he sometimes felt that she was his. Adrian was well aware that he was being selfish and unfair because Kalista would never get protective of him when he dated. It wasnt like he didnt try because he did, he tried and tried but he had fallen in love with Kalista. He had been warned by everyone but every day he worked with her, every time he pulled back another layer he fell even harder. She didnt make it easy for him either but it was none of their faults it just happened. It wasnt his fault that she knew him better than anyone else. The situation he was in was horrific but what agonized him the most was that he couldnt have her and have his job. He would have to choose and that wasnt a decision he wanted to make so he would stifle his feelings and pray that she wouldnt notice his change in behavior. Kalista passed the time looking over the crime scene pictures on her laptop, while ignoring the frequent stares of Mason Scott. She searched for a recurring face but didnt find any at least anything that stuck out at her. While Mason interrogated her about her diet she barely answered him about her special deliveries of organic and inorganic foods to dodge her allergies. Her phones buzzed in her pocket. As she read the text she could feel a familiar cold chill run through her body. It read I love the way your auburn hair looks in the evening. She was officially alarmed, was someone following her? Was it more than some random admirer or ex-boyfriend who had been keeping tabs on her? She made a mental note tell Adrian about the strange text. Hed know what to do like he always did she thought. The tension was thick inside the van and Kalista was uncomfortable under the gaze of Mason Scott. Three hours had gone by of Kalista deflecting Masons questions. They were both tired of the situation. Did I do something to offend you? Mason asked her looking at her with piercing blue eyes. Kalista frowned then her face relaxed into a small smile. Are you attracted to me special agent Scott?
49

Masons eyebrows cocked and he was at a loss for words as the confident agent flushed a bright red. Its okay its just a question. Kalista said calmly as she chuckled. Yes, Kalista nodded her head. So is everybody else agent Scott, why do you find me attractive? she asked only to answer herself before then man could speak. Because I have beautiful hair and gorgeous eyes, Ive heard it all before she trailed off as her eyes went distant. Mason could see something rooted behind the womens sad eyes but was determined to leave it alone because of past experiences when he would profile his past girlfriends. Im actually attracted to you because of your bluntness. Setting me straight about your name pronunciation, being forward about your beauty without the fear of coming across as arrogant or conceded and your intelligence you figured something out in a night that a group of esteemed criminal profilers have been looking for, for months. Call me old fashion but substance is way more valued than beauty in my books. Mason swore he hit the jackpot with the smile he received from Kalista. He guessed that was all she need to hear and that a woman as beautiful as herself would only be interested in a man romantically only if he saw past her breath taking eyes and sultry lips. So. You should stop by my place tonight; Ill give you my address. Kalista said as she scribbled on a small piece of paper from her notepad. Mason sighed heavily as she placed the small paper in his hands. She could see the beads of sweat making a slow descent down the side of his face. She laughed at his wide-eyed reaction. I didnt mean sex special agent Scott. I was going to cook you a healthy dinner but if you had something else in my mind. Kalista trailed off mischievously as she arched one eyebrow and teased the man mercilessly. He smiled at her when he noticed she purposely toyed with his masculinity. There was

50

a loud thud on the door and Mason slid it open to see Aven and Grey with a handcuffed boy whose hair fell in front of his face which made unidentifiable. Whos Kalista begun when Grey tilted his head back and Kalista was gaped as she recognized the boy from the sketch of Camillas mystery lover. What an odd coincidence that he was found at the same club that Camilla and Kerry Jackson were marked for death. Look who we found. Grey said hulling him into the back of the van. Tell him what you told us kid. Aven ordered him. Kalista and Mason got out of the van and Adrian joined them outside. They huddled around the young man. His ID read that he was Shane Wyman. Kay fine, easy aight. I know Camilla Raisa; she was aha good client and we kinda had a thing. She paid top notch for E. When was the last time you saw her? Adrian asked him. Sunday night man, we totally hooked up at Safeco Fields but we got interrupted, she was freaked out. She heard someone coming and ran me off before I finished the deed. She thought it was her mother or sumin why they pressing charges or sumin? the boy asked oblivious to seriousness of the situation. Camilla Raisa is dead; Adrian informed with disgust in eyes. Whoa I didnt kill nobody. She was hot though. Kalista shook her head and watched as Aven and Grey hauled the man off. One more thing, Kalista called after him before they put him in the car. Are you an artist? The boy shook his confused head. Kalista nodded and waved him off as he was loaded into the patrol car that arrived while they were interviewing him. Why did you ask him that? Mason asked from behind her. We found charcoal on Camilla Raisas body. Kalista said. She was clearly upset and annoyed. She had never been at such odds at work. Murderers could never get away, not with her on the case. This case had been bashing her every which way
51

and the emotional strain it was taking on her, she was ready to retire to her home to do shots of tequila. She always had her best ideas after a hang-over. She rubbed the knot in her neck and closed her eyes briefly. I think Im gonna go home, get a fresh pair of eyes. Adrian looked at her and smiled. Yeah okay go get drunk. He said taking off in the opposite direction. Kalista waved him off as the rest of the team dispersed.

52

Chapter eight - Cant leave you alone. Kalista settled in for the night, after a quick shower she changed into black sweat pants and an oversized t-shirt. Her hair was slightly damped from her shower and hung on her left shoulder. She ran a brush through her damp hair when she heard a gentle knock on her door. She expected to see Adrian; they often got drunk together during difficult cases but her visitor surprised her. Mason, she said his name softly as she remembered their plans. He looked her up and down and frowned when he realized she wasnt expecting him. He stood there awkwardly. Im sorry I forgot. Kalista said rubbing her head. Ive had a lot on my mind. Right, I should go He said softly before turning on heels only to have Kalistas hand pull him into her quaint apartment. He looked around the dimly lit room. The only light came from the crack of her bedroom door, and two bronze lamps on either sides of her beige sectional couch. In front of the couch was a brown coffee table with a bottle of tequila and a shot glass. On the far side of the room was a very large sound system mounted on a bronze space saver. There were drapes on the windows behind the couch; they were a deep earthy green. I like your space, its charming. He said sitting on her couch. Kalista nodded and smiled Thanks, I like earthy tones. If you havent noticed, let me get you a shot glass. He laughed from behind as she left for the kitchen. So Evans wasnt kidding, you really are going to get drunk. No he wasnt. she said handing him the small glass as she sat down next to him and began to pour into the glasses. I have a question for you. Hmm, she murmured from behind the glass as she downed her first shot. Where is your TV? he asked drinking his own shot then resting the glass down so Kalista could pour another.

53

I dont have one, I dont watch TV. I like music and Im rarely ever home. Really, well lets see what you got. He said taking his shot over to her sound system. He scrolled his index finger over her CDs. Alright, we got a little Bread, Fleetwood Mac, Frank Sinatra, Madonna, whoa what is this? he said picking out her backstreet boys CD. She covered her face and shook her. Ever heard of a guilty pleasure. She said as she downed another shot. Easy detective, he teased, rejoining her on the couch. Oh please, this is nothing. I was sorta a wild child for a while. While I was younger of course, the whole nine yards. Drinking, partying, I did it all until I woke up at least. She said as she trailed off and her eyes seemed distant. He studied her face for a while, he wasnt stupid she was a beautiful woman but he knew she was hiding a secret. Whether it was the normal guy inside him that wanted to know more or the trained profiler, he knew she was keeping something dark inside. He couldnt peel his eyes away from her, even in sweats and a t-shirt she was stunning. There is something unsettling about you Kalista. There is something behind your eyes. Kalista looked up from her glass and caught his eyes. Her grey eyes stared back at his blue ones and they seemed lost in time. Kalista was trying her hardest to conceal the pain that brewed within her and Mason trying to search her eyes for an answer. So why did you decide to become profiler? she asked averting her eyes from his and pouring them both another shot. I was a psychologist actually, I get bored easily and when the FBI picked up my success and recruited me, I was ready to move on so I did. I know some people have a story but I have none. What about you, detective Jocosta, are there no stories in your past? No event that changes the course of your life? he asked as he caught her inhale deeply. He felt sick with himself as he saw her eyes welling up with tears.
54

Oh gosh, Im sorry Kalista. I didnt know. Kalista smiled and shook her head stopping him mid-sentence. Its fine, I dont know if its the tequila or if Im just over keeping this secret. I was raped when I was sixteen. No I havent caught guy, no Im not looking. Some things are too painful to relive and if I go there Im not sure Ill be able to pull myself back. She said meeting his eyes. She really needed to stop drinking. She laid her glass on her coffee table, leaned back huddled her knees together as Mason processed the news. Kalista Im sorry, you shouldnt have to carry that baggage around. Its how I cope. Its all I know. She said her voice barely above a whisper. So is that why you became a cop? Kalista shook her head and turned to him. Then why? Kalista smiled and leaned into him. I have a thing for guns. His laughter erupted from his stomach and Kalista could see his eyes squint and head tilt back as he laughed heartily. You are complicated and simple at the same time, I dont think thats ever been possible. Before me Before you. Mason smiled brightly at Kalista. He thought to himself that it would be a lot harder to go back to Washington. It was only after eleven when Kalista was getting way too drunk to have a good looking man in her apartment. She walked him to door and was actually sad that he had to go. Well it was a pleasure getting drunk with you Kalista. Kalista chuckled and her head sunk only to have his hand bring it back up. Call me when your baggage gets too heavy. Anytime. Kalista nodded and watched him leave. It took her five seconds before she followed after him outside
55

her apartment door and push him against the wall. She brushed her lips against his lightly giving him permission. He kissed back almost instinctively and wrapped his arms around her slender frame. The taste of her lips was exactly how hed imagine the experience to be without the lingering tequila. He flipped them so he was now pinning her to the wall as the intensity of the kiss deepened, the need for air forced them to part but they could both still feel the heat between them. Leaning her forehead on his, she delicately unwrapped herself from him and headed back to her apartment lingering in the doorway to watch him walk away. She wasnt sure what had prompted her to do it but she was glad she did, if it were one person for her to start opening up too.it would be Mason Scott. Are you okay to drive home? Kalista asked him as he adjusted his brown jacket. Uh yes, I only had three shots. Kalista smirked mischievously. I wasnt talking about the drinking. She giggled tauntingly then disappeared behind the closed door. Mason chuckled to himself as he waited for the elevator. He kept thinking to himself that Kalista Jocosta had to be a dream. Kalista placed the half empty bottle of tequila back onto her wine rack and retired into her bedroom. She crawled under her blue comforter and tried to fall asleep. She thought aloud to herself, What the hell are you doing Kalista.

Kalista struggled to find her phone the next morning. Her eyes were barely open and there was that familiar pounding in her head that she knew so well. Rolling off her bed she found her phone under her it. Mm. She murmured into the phone. Morning sunshine, we need you down here. Shane Wyman said he remembered something and he only wants to talk to the hot lady cop. Adrian told her. Fine, give me half an hour.oh and Adrian, Have a cup of coffee waiting for you? Thanks. She hung up and steadied herself as she got off the floor and into her bathroom.

56

Nine thirty, Kalista ran into the precinct. Her hair in a messy ponytail, her navy blue jacket half buttoned up and her black heels undone. Incoming Grey teased while taking her bag from her and setting it on her desk trying to help her out. Kalista stumbled onto her chair and buckled her black heels. Where is Shane? she asked as she collected herself. Interrogation room two. Grey said. Kalista nodded her head and left with Adrian at her heels. Through the one way glass she could see Mason Scott sitting opposite the young boy. Shanes head was on the steel table and Mason sat comfortably with his hands in his lap. Kalista entered the room and the boy looked up and smiled at Kalista, who had never seen such terrible teeth. Shanes teeth were murky and deteriorating inside his mouth, she hadnt noticed it because it was dark the last time she had seen him. Detective Jocosta, Shane here has something to say to you. Mason said getting up and giving her his chair. I got it from here thanks. Kalista said smiling and Mason left the room. So Shane, what is it that you remember ..? Cam and I were video chatting, she was at a cyber caf and she got into it with some guy. I clicked off line because I had ahcustomer. Anyway I recognized him, I saw him hanging around Cam sometimes when we went to club PINK but Cam never gave him the time of day yuh know. I just thought he was weird. Kalista nodded and couldnt believe that the junky had broken the case wide open. It was in Masons profile that the killer had stalked the girls before he killed them. Do you remember the name of the cyber caf? Oh yeah totally, Picture This Caf, its a photo gallery too. Thank you Shane, you may have helped finding the killer. Kalista smiled politely.

57

One more thing, the boy called after Kalista as she left for the door. Even before Kalista turned to the boy she knew she would regret it. Are you free Friday night? Kalista was shocked by the boys audacity and the fact that her thought he would be out of jail by then. Kalista chuckled and left the room without another look. Kalista joined her colleagues in the bullpen, Adrian sat at his desk chatting with Grey whose chair was next to Adrians desk, Aven was on the phone and judging by his smile it was Francine and Mason was behind her. Okay so Shane said that Camilla Raisa had it out with some guy at the Picture This Caf. He recognized the man and said that he noticed him hanging around Camilla before. We think this could be our killer. Good Grey check if the cyber caf has a surveillance camera maybe we could get him on camera and get an ID. This could be a possible person of interest. Grey nodded and left with Mason through the precincts front doors. Kalista finally caught her breath as she relaxed into her chair she undid her hair and fell onto her shoulder in lazy waves. Im starving. Breakfast? she asked Adrian and he smiled up at her. Kalista dug into her bag for her wallet but couldnt find it. Damn it, I think I left my wallet at home because I was rushing this morning. Hey Adr. Adrian held up her keys and she laughed and took it from his hands. Wait crap I think the Sedan is in the garage. You may have to take a cab. Ill be back, Kalista said as she rushed out. She lived only twenty minutes from the precinct so she could rush home, grab her wallet and be back without missing anything. Taxi? Kalista asked as she proceeded for a vacant cab only to be approached by a man. Kalista wasnt in the mood to be cheerful but the mans sad eyes struck a soft spot and her sympathetic nature got the best of her. Excuse, this is my cab. His timid voice made Kalista feel even more for the stranger.
58

Sorry about that, go ahead. Kalista smiled as the mans face lit up. Youre letting me go? He sounded completely surprised. I change my mind please go ahead. Thank you. He opened the cab door for Kalista and smiled down at her. Youre a very beautiful woman. Thank you. She smiled at him. Of all the men that had told her she was beautiful she thought that the strangers was the most genuine. Kalista she pulled up in front of her apartment building; she ran in quickly and felt her body freeze up. Her door was unlocked and she instinctively reached for her gun that was at her desk in the precinct, she wasnt expecting to be gone for long so she left it. She had another gun but it was in a box safe under her bed. She stood in her doorway and peered at her ajar bedroom door. She remembered locking her door but she was in such a rush she could have been mistaken. Taking precaution she dialed speed dial number one. Hey Kal, miss me already? Adrians calm voice joked over the phone. Hey, my door was unlocked when I got home. I dont know for sure if I locked it this morning so just stay on the phone okay Im going in. No problem, Im sure its nothing. Adrians voice was calm but Kalista knew the rifts in his voice by heart and knew he was concerned. She made her way into her bedroom and gasped into the phone. Oh . The phone slipped out of Kalistas hand and hit the floor with a loud thud as she saw the mess over bed. In bold red letters were the words Beauty and folly are old companions, it resembled the note that was left on the second victim Kerry Jackson except on a larger scale. Kalista was flustered and froze before she scrambled for her phone the floor, she could hear Adrian screaming that he was coming. She heard the desperation in his voice. Her own throat closed up and she couldnt speak, she felt her eyes burning and tears flushed her face as she stood still watching the massacre in her room. Gaining some of her composure she checked her bathroom quickly only to find it empty. She picked up her phone again and saw that Adrian had hung up only to hear his voice calling her name ten
59

minutes later. His gun was drawn when he found her in her bedroom. Looking at the bloody note and then back to her she opened her arms and he came to her. He wrapped his arms around her tightly and she finally felt safe since she saw the message. She felt Adrian kiss her through her hair and saw Aven with his gun drawn too. He looked at the horrific message then back at Kalista, his face softened immediately. Adrian released Kalista then held the sides of her face and brought her eyes to his, he looked more terrified than she did. Are you hurt? he asked her. She shook her head then wiped at her eyes. What the hell is going on? she heard Aven say as he got on his phone. Aven and Adrian gave Kalista some time to calm down then they sat in her living room while CSU processed her bedroom and checked for prints on her door. Run me through it babe. I got home; the door was unlocked so I called Adrian and had him stay on the phone just in case. I mean I rushed out this morning and wasnt sure if was my mistake. My bedroom was door was cracked open and I remembered closing it then I saw it. Kalista was huddled in her safety position; her arms hugged her huddled knees. She felt Adrians hand rub small circles on her back and it was the most comforted she had ever felt. Lets get you out of here, and let CSU finish up. Adrian suggested as he got up and stretched his hand out for her. Kalista nodded and took his hand.

Back at the precinct, Kalista was at her desk staring blankly at white walls. She had a piping hot cup of coffee in her hands and Adrians jacket around her. She still felt a chill within her. She was sure that the hairs on the back of her neck had yet to lie down. Her eyes were puffy and red but she was out of tears. Aven was in the corner of his desk talking to Captain Donavan, she felt them watching her. Adrian was leaned against Kalista desk, lending his comforting presence and giving her the quiet that she needed. Grey and Mason came in with two boxes each of surveillance tapes.
60

Guess who scored big time, Grey trailed off as he saw Adrians hardened expression and Kalistas state. Whats going on? Mason said as his concerned eyes scanned over Kalista. Captain and Aven joined them momentarily. Kal found a bloody note in apartment. Aven informed them. What do you mean a bloody note? Grey asked, his instinctive nature seeping through the surface. Bloody note as in the one we found on Kerry Jackson and Camilla Raisa. Aven said sitting at his desk. What did the note say? Mason asked with furrowed eyebrows. Beauty and folly are old companions, Kalista answered him as she met his eyes. Jocosta, I want you off this case. Captain said quietly. He asked as a formality because he knew there was no way that Kalista would drop the case. Captain its okay Im fine I dont want some psycho killer after one of my best detectives. He rebutted. Scott, why is this guy coming after Kal? Grey asked. We didnt predict this; hes not supposed to reach out. This killer lurks in the shadows and observes. Maybe hes taunting us, catch me if you can. Or maybe he was singling her out...as his next victim. But why me, I dont even Kalista trailed off and set the coffee aside. There was no way she could consume anything. They all looked at her with knowing eyes, the beautiful detective it made sense. Kalista you fit the profile. Look at you. Aven said ruefully. You said you were recruited for the club werent you? Mason said.

61

Yes but I didnt accept it. And where did he even find me, Ive never been to club PINK. Last night was the first time and I was in the van for most of the night. Kalista argued. The killer may have been in one of the crowds around the crime scenes he would have felt the urge to re-visit the crime scenes. He could have seen you then. Adrian said leaving her side. Kalista lay back in her chair and sighed loudly. She thought to herself that it was happening again. Her beauty was a curse. I want a protective detail on your apartment. Captain said walking away not giving her the chance to protest. Kalista rolled her eyes and nodded. Guys Im fine, Kalista said reaching into her desk for her service weapon. She waved it in the air, See, Im fine. She placed the weapon down and turned to Grey. What did you guys come up with? Kalista asked tired of being treated like a child. She knew her colleagues cared about her a great deal but it was still hard to be smothered. We have all the surveillance videos from last week. Shane cant remember what day it was so we have to go through them all its ridiculous. Grey said giving a portion of the tapes to each detective. As Adrian begun on his first tape he peeked over his desktop to see Kalista. His eyes asked if she was alright and she gave him a reassuring smile. After lunch they were halfway through the videos and Kalista got a pleasant surprise. Kalista heard a stir in the bullpen and peeled her eyes away from the monitor to see her mother approaching; the impeccably dressed woman strutted in the bullpen. She was the splitting image of her daughter with matured features. She aged gracefully and even though she was nearing fifty, her beautiful glassy grey eyes were surrounded by seamless smooth skin. She wore only designer clothes and had a knack for fashion, more so than her daughter who couldnt be fazed by it. Kalista watched as the gorgeous woman turned heads as she walked into the precinct, the resemblance was evident but the woman looked like an older sister rather than a mother. Not many knew it but Kalista was Greek, even though Kassia tried her hardest to involve Kalista in their heritage Kalista wasnt interested.

62

Kassia Jocosta was born in Akron, Ohio to Greek-American parents Dorinda and Dimitri Jocosta. She was very free spirited and spent some summers in Greece with her family. Kalista was conceived in Greece, her mother had a fling with a Greek artist but he died in a fatal car accident before Kalista was born. Kassia wore a channel pantsuit with a waist coat over it; her auburn hair was lighter than Kalistas and was tied in a knot. Kalista Elise Jocosta, the woman addressed her daughter and Adrian laughed at the mother daughter interaction, he had met Kassia several times before and the woman was quite fond of him. Mason watched Kassia closely and couldnt believe the resemblance. Mother, Kalista said sitting up and hugging her mother. Dont mother me, why do I have to find out that some psycho killer is after you from a third party? the woman begun her tirade. Kalista looked around the room and the others held their hands up in surrender, it must have been the captain who told her Kalista thought. Even though Captain Donavan was happily married he was always attracted to her mother, but who wasnt? I didnt tell you because you worry too much. Signomy. Pos eesai? she apologized and asked her mothers wellbeing with puppy eyes. Kala, elante mazy mou. the woman replied requesting her daughter speak with her in private. No we could talk here, they dont speak Greek mother. Kalista said which got the attentions of the others as the women conversed a few more minutes in their first language. Laughter erupted from one of them every now then as they continued to ignore the others and converse. The two together were breath taking. Grey broke their contact and snapped his fingers. Adrian, what does this killer want with my daughter? her mother asked looking away from her daughter who raised her hands in surrender sat down. He is killing beautiful women, and he may spotted Kal at a crime scene.

63

Well thats no fair, why should my daughter be punished for being gorgeous. Kassia said stroking Kalistas hair. You know, its partly my fault. Her name is Greek for most beautiful one. Mom, dont you have court or something? Your right, I do have a case in a few. Call me every night until you lock the bastard up. Boys keep my girl safe? she said as the men nodded. Kassia kissed both sides of her daughters cheeks then left. You know you make me nervous whenever you speak Greek. Its unnerving. Adrian said from his desk. She laughed at his comment and was interrupted by Greys outburst. I found something; I think its the altercation. The detectives gathered around Grey and crouched down. On the monitor screen Camilla wore a candy pink summer dress and her blonde hair was pulled into a severely tight ponytail. There was no sound but they could see a male from behind he was short and wore a brown cardigan and grey slacks. He tapped Camilla and the shoulder and she yanked away from him. It appeared that Camilla was screaming at the man. Eventually she pushed his shoulder and walked out of the cameras view. The mans face was still hidden from camera. Grey is there any way you can get a clear shot of his face? Kalista asked Grey still. He turned to meet her eyes, Kal wow you smell really good. Grey noted aloud as her neck was close to his face. Thanks babe, Im using a new body wash...mint and lavender. ReallyI like it. Ahem. Mason interrupted Kalista and Greys banter. Im gonna get this video to our lab techs. Excuse me Ms. Mint & Lavender. Grey said as he squeezed his way pass Kalista who only giggled in response. I think we should pursue this man. Mason stood in the center of the detectives. Look how Camilla humiliates him; she had no regard for his feelings. I think I know why he does it.
64

Well. Adrian prompted as he leaned on his desk and quietly observed the way Mason Scotts hand rested on the back of Kalistas chair. He ignored the thought then but he knew something intimate had gone down between them and he wasnt sure how he felt about it at the time. The killer, we profiled that he has a menial job, he was probably bullied as a child and had been treated badly by women throughout his life. It probably started with his mother, it started with his childhood. She was probably gorgeous there are a lot of ways she could have ignored him and that has repeated his entire life. So he stalks the victims he pretends that he runs into Camilla and is appalled when she disrespects him he waits for the right moment when shes alone, stabs her through the heart and leaves the bloody note. Labeling her with the quote. What about Kal, why is he taunting her? That is the variable that doesnt fit into the profile. It could be he saw you at a crime scene and simply find you beautiful. You havent offended him because he would have tried to take your life. As far as Im concerned youre not in danger. What are you saying? Aven asked trying to clarify what they were all thinking. Im saying I think this could be our killer. He pointed back to Greys monitor.

65

Chapter nine - An Empty Castle. Im beginning to feel like myself again. And it feels good. Ive waited too long and now I cant be stopped. I havent given up hope though, one day shell turn around and be happy to see me. Maybe that day is today. Ive been waiting outside for half of the day, watching her through the window. She is exquisite; she has haunting raven hair and hazel eyes. She hardly smiles, like me. Its late afternoon and I cant wait any longer. I approach the house. It looks like a castle. Grand and royal. I approach the house and she spins around abruptly. I wait a couple of seconds for her reaction. Shes confused and I know it will only get worse from here. She tells me Im not suppose be here so I close in on her. She reaches for her phone but its too late because she already in my grasp. I knew this time would be different but my anger bubbles up like an erupting volcano and after she calls me a freak and demand that I let her go all I see is red. I cant stop myself after the first strike. It literally feels like Im floating outside my body and looking down at the massacre. Im panting when Im finished and begin to cry, not because I feel sorry, because I dont feel sorry. I dont bother to clean up I leave the knife sticking out of her chest and run through her blood needing to get as far away as possible. Im not confused anymore because I knew who I am now. Im empty, just like the castle.

66

Chapter ten - Hunted! Its the end of the week and everyone is frustrated. No one wants to go home because they would have felt guilty that the killer hasnt been caught. They were all seated in the bullpen, case files and empty coffee cups covered the detectives desk. Kalista was having an especially hard time, maybe it had something to do with the bulls-eye that was basically stuck to her back or maybe it was the way she identified with the victims. Sleep was a stranger by then and she basically ran on coffee much to her colleagues dismay. They had all tried to be there for her but there was no way they could understand how she was feeling. The only thing they were grateful for was the lack of murder that week. Mason said it was probably because the killer was fixated on Kalista. It was scary but that thought was her only solace. It was lunch that same Friday when Kalistas already depressed state would become a state of permanence. She had just finished an organic salad and sat at her desk while Adrian proceeded to throw his used napkins at her desk. She twisted in her chair and was now facing him. His eyes beamed with mischief and he flashed her smile that warmed her insides. With the gray clouds she felt had been following, Adrian Evans could still get her to smile. Kalista wasnt sure if she liked him having that power over her but she definitely needed it. Grey and Mason were out and probably held up at Sashas diner where Grey basically lived. Aven was in Captain Donovans office and had been since before lunch. Hazard of the job Kalista thought. Adrian had ceased his napkin throwing and was now randomly touching his keyboard. Kalistas phone buzzed to life on her desk. As she reached for her phone she knocked over a half empty cup of coffee onto Adrians adjoining desk. She muttered and apology as her gaze was averted to the phone. Adrian began absorbing the coffee with the same napkins he threw at her but froze his actions when he looked over at Kalista. She seemed frozen in time and if Adrian didnt know better he would have sworn that she was. He watched as the color drained from her face, she was now a chalky pale hue as she looked at her phones screen. Kal, he called out to her worriedly and watched knowingly that something was wrong as she gripped her stomach.
67

What is it? he asked again but there was no way she could hear him over her screaming thoughts. In a split second she covered her mouth and bolted for the bathroom but only made to a bin outside the lockers where vomited her entire lunch. Adrian was at her side when she rose up. She didnt speak but washed up in the locker room. Adrian waited for her at the door. Her face was still deathly pale and her eyes were out of sync with the rest of her face. I need to go home. She whispered to him, he noticed her eyes and didnt push. Okay, wait for me in the Sedan; Ill let Aven know youre not feeling well. Kalista nodded slowly. Adrians eyes followed her until she was out of the door. It looked painful for her to walk and breathe and that when he knew he couldnt let it slide and he would have to press for information. It seemed like the only she would talk to him sometimes but he knew she had good reason to keep thing private but he just wanted her to open up completely. The car ride was short but tense, Adrian could tell she was hurting and had no idea how to make things better. Kalista had spoken and it began to worry him. He parked in front of her apartment and she hadnt realized she was home. She sat still and stared blankly ahead until he nudged her by the shoulder gently. She looked at him then to her building, she still sat rigid and motionless. It was obvious to Adrian that she had intention of getting out of the car she he got out and helped her out. It was a bigger task than he anticipated as she could barely stand without his assistance. When they had reached the elevator she seemed well enough to stand on her own so Adrian released his possessive grip around her waist. The elevator dinged and he finally averted his gaze back to her and noticed her tears. Kalista was the only person he knew who cried silently. Kal he said softly and she looked at him with her hypnotic eyes. She couldnt speak her lips moved but there was no sound. She staggered to her door and violently jiggled the keys into the lock but her hands were shaking too much. The warmth of Adrians hands on hers seemed to melt the ice temperature coldness of her hands. He gently twisted the key in her lock and opened the door to her apartment. It was when her mood changed to frantic. She dropped her bag at the foot of the door, stepped out of her shoes and begun pacing her living room. Her blazer was shed next then she tied her hair up in a knot. Adrian stood patiently at
68

her door and gave her time to unwind knowing her to well. By the time her breathing had returned to normal, he was slouched on the floor but still leaned against the door and his head was cradled between his legs. I know who the killer is. Her voice was timid and barely above a whisper. He looked up at her and she was causally leaned against the kitchen counter. Her body was relaxed but Adrian could see the anguish on her. He waited for her to explain, it seemed like he ever did was wait on Kalista. Ive been getting strange text messages, I didnt put it together until today. She knelt in front of him and slid the phone into his hands. Kalista watched him intently as the words resonated with him. Isnt that what She began to sob again and nodded to the question. Its what my rapist said to me. Oh Kal, I dont what to say. He whispered but knew that nothing could change the agony that was tormenting her. He could see it in her eyes. You think the serial killer and your rapist are one and the same? It all adds up doesnt it, why he fixated on me. The message that scum was in my home. Adrian couldnt get to her fast enough but she bolted for her bathroom. The door was slammed shut but he sat in front of the door and listened painlessly to her vomit and sob. As he heard her gasp for air a lone tear rolled down his cheek and he was quick to wipe it away. He could no longer find the line where he ended and she begun so when she hurt, he hurt ten times more. He slid down to the back of the door and huddled his knees close to his chest. Kal you need to talk to me. He said through the closed door. She continued to vomit and Adrian winced every time he heard her gag. Minutes had passed and he heard her turn on the shower. He sighed, got up and went to her kitchen. He maneuvered around the small room like he had been living there all his life. He had been there so many times it was officially his second home. The first was when his apartment had been fumigated; he spent an entire week on her couch. The next occasion was the day after he had taken a life for the first time. Apart from Aven

69

he was the only who had killed during the line of duty. It had messed him up badly. It was one of the reasons why he was determined to always be there for her. He could remember how banged up he was. His hand was in a sling and Kalista had insisted that he sleep in her bed because he was injured. He tried, he really did but he couldn't slip into the dark realm of unconsciousness. When two o' clock hit and the bedside lamp was still on, she crawled into bed with him and held and rubbed small circles on his back until he had fallen sleep. When he woke up abruptly and snatched her wrist so tightly that it left it nasty purple bruise, she had rubbed his back and assured him that everything was okay. He fell asleep to her soothing voice and her gentle fingers rubbing small circles on his back. He had appreciated how selfless she was at that difficult time in his life and he wasn't sure if she knew. He heard her bedroom door open and he dropped two ant-acids in glass of water for her. She came out in a just football jersey. It hurt Adrian that she didn't think he'd be affected by it. Her toned legs were well showed off. He handed her the glass and she accepted it with a small smile. Her hands shook violently that some of the water toppled over her hand. Adrian cupped her hand and settled her shaking limbs. She averted his gaze and he followed her to the couch where she tucked her legs under herself and crouched unto the couch. He waited patiently for her and she knew he'd wait for her and took her time as she finished her glass of water. While she drank, Adrian looked at her skin and noticed it was red and blotchy. He grimaced because she had tried to scrub herself clean. She had told him that after her attack she had felt dirty for weeks. Adrian wished so much that Kalista would let him be there for her at least a quarter of the time that she had been there for him. There was always some kind of restraint and she would never let herself go for him. That hurt him more than anything. Thanks for everything Adrian, but you should get back to work. Kal, don't, there is nowhere else I need to be than here... for you. Don't push me away, I know you too well for that. Adrian, Kalista dropped the glass she had been holding and met his intense gaze. His eyes were pleading and Kalista knew for a fact that he wasn't going anywhere. I hate that youre seeing me like this. Her hands gestured to herself and Adrian frowned in disbelief.
70

You're kidding me right? Kalista Jocosta you don't have to be guarded around me anymore. Geez, Kal I've been your partner for five years. What more do I have to do to show you, that I'm here and I'm always going to be here. Adrian hadn't meant to make her cry, and she rarely did but she was excused. Her emotions must have been out of whack Adrian thought. I know that Adrian, I do. It's not you, I have my reasons. Everything I'm doing, I'm considering your feelings before mine. What's that supposed to mean? He asked quietly. Can we not go there right now? Fine, are you going to tell the others? I don't want too, I dont want them looking at me with pity like a victim! Kal you can't be sure it's the same person. Adrian that is too big of a coincidence. I know but I also know what it did it to you. The statutes of limitation ran out. What are you gonna do when you find him. She looked at him pointedly making sure her point got across without saying it aloud. His eyes widened in shock. No Kal Im not gonna let you go down that road. Its a dark place. I know dark places Adrian! She pulled away from his grip and begun pacing her living room. Her side table lamp shook with every stride she took. Ive been in a dark place for half of my life Adrian. You have no idea, you dont get over something like that in a day! I didnt say you would Kal but Im not gonna let you do it. Ive been there and its not something I want for you. Dont go down that road alone.

71

He deserves to die for what he did to me Adrian. Tears welled up in her eyes and she had just about had it with the conversation. Her shoulders sagged and as she walked over to her door and held it open for Adrian. Ill see you tomorrow. She said but without mirth avoiding his eyes as he passed her. It was the only way she could turn him away, his eyes held such affinity for her she would always yield to them. He said nothing and didnt bother argue with her.

72

Chapter eleven - Bait! Sleep deprived and moody, Kalista walked into the precinct the next day. Grey was the only one there and she smiled softly at him as he approached her. We got something. The audio and visual guy got a clean enough shot of the guys face in the caf. Im waiting on Mason to get here, maybe he could use his FBI connections and use facial recognition on our guy. This is the biggest lead we have so far. Thats awesome, where is Mason by the way? Grey just shrugged his shoulders I uh left him a message about the picture but he hasnt replied. Okay, have you filled captain in? Grey nodded his head and looked back at the Captain Donavons closed door. Been in there with Aven for most of the morning. Are we in trouble? Kalista took off her jacket and stashed her umbrella under her desk. Just the opposite, I think he wants Aven to be his predecessor. Kalista smiled at the idea of Aven doing the captains job. Do you think hell take it? Kalista stared at the closed door. Grey just shrugged his shoulders Dunno, he fiddled with a stapler on his desk and Kalista averted her gaze to him with an arched eyebrow. You two know everything about each other, I think its creepy so dont screw with me. Is he going to take the job? Grey smiled and shook his head. You think were creepy you and Adrian are so in sync you breathe together. Grey said casually. Kalista and Grey chatted about the case going over theories that seemed useless until Mason Scott walked in. It was obvious he didnt get any sleep. Dark circles
73

lined his eyes and they were tainted red. His usual crisp suit was rumpled and unkempt that particular morning. He looked zombie like and walked languidly. Grey was the first to address him but Mason stopped him and stood in the middle of the precinct. He cleared his throat for an announcement just Adrian walked in. He looked at Kalista briefly before averting his eyes back to Mason. Ive been going over this profile for the last twelve hours. We need something to make him reveal himself. So far weve been stifling the press and keeping the murders out of the media so lets give him what he wants. Mason looked back at them with an intense gaze, his eyes fell on Kalista a while longer. You mean release the profile to the press? Grey asked trying to clarify the almost distraught profilers point. Not just release the profile, we hold a press conference and let Kalista address him. It may cause him to act out. Adrian shot up and approached Mason Absolutely not, forget it. Youll be putting a bulls eye on her back. Hell come after her. Adrians tone stung and Kalista wasnt keen on him making a decision that was hers. I dont like it either. Grey said slowly sitting on his desk. Their decisions seemed to enrage Mason and he ran his fingers through his hair exasperated. You dont understand, this may be the only way to catch him. He raised his voice and Captain Donovan came out of his office followed by Aven. Aven smiled at Kalista until he realized her perplexed expression. Whats all the damn commotion about? Cap he wants to use Kalista as bait! Adrian said dryly as if there was a sour taste in his mouth. What? Aven was now alarmed; he protected his team like a predator would.

74

No not bait. Mason covered his face with his hands and stormed out the precinct. What the hell is up his pants? Captain asked looking at Kalista. Kal you are not doing a press conference to provoke the killer. Dont tell me what to do. Women are walking around aimlessly and dont even know theyre in danger. I can identify with the victims. Men stare and harass us all the time and overtime you get accustomed and everyone becomes harmless. They dont see him coming none of you understand that. It felt like she had been pushed of the edge and she turned on her heels and left for her calm down corner, the locker rooms. She splashed the cold water on her from the tap and felt Adrians presence behind her. She wondered if he knew the solace his presence provided. She turned and smiled at him as her handed her a small towel. Im sorry for freaking out on you guys back there. He leaned against the lockers and placed his hands in his pockets. Its nothing, you were right we dont how it feels but that doesnt excuse you making rash decisions. Yeah I know Im sorry, I wasnt considering it. I guess Mason is just as desperate as we are about catching the killer. That doesnt excuse what he did. He wanted you to be some kind of bait and thats inexcusable. Kalista smiled at his pained expression. She approached him and placed both of her hands on his shoulder and forced him to look her in the eye. Its fine, Im fine so please calm down. She said with concern. Her features relaxed when his lips curved into a smile. Theres the Adrian I know. He met her eyes again, they were still inches apart and Kalista found his scent suddenly heady. It lit her senses on fire the intense way he looked at her. As if
75

understanding what his eyes wanted she slid her hands down to his chest keeping him at bay while she collected her thoughts. His nearness finally making the impression that hers does to him. She could feel the love he held for her oozing out of his pores. There in the locker rooms of the precinct Kalista was forced to make one of the biggest decisions of her life. While her mind was playing tug of war Adrian had already closed the gap between them and was cupping her chin with his hand. His touch was so gentle she didnt realize their skin were in contact until he spoke. Its me Kal, and its always going to be me. His eyes bore into hers and voice barely above a whisper. Her eyes involuntarily shut close before she looked up at him through thick eyelashes. We cant Adrian, youre too good for me. Shh Kal no. He lifted her chin so she had no choice to look at him. Tell me its not all in my head. It isnt. Do you feel that? He asked rhetorically closing what little space there was between then. She nodded her head but took a step back. You are the only thing constant right now. Please dont take that away from me. Im not taking it away from you. Take all of me Kal I wont ask for anything in return. I cant Adrian we cant. Warm tears rolled down her flushed cheeks and she took a step back from him and tried to breathe but his love smothered so much she tore out of the locker rooms and ran for the hills. Adrian still completely paralyzed by her rejection. Kalista ran past Grey and Aven all who tried to ask her what was wrong but she couldnt hear them over her screaming thoughts. She stumbled outside the precinct
76

and slowly descended the stairs because her vision was clouded by her tears. She crouched on the last step and cradled her face with the palms of her hand. It was barely a minute before she felt a hand on her shoulder. She knew it was Aven before she turned around, his cologne giving him away. She wiped her head back and Adrian and Grey were there too. She didnt look either in the eyes too emotionally drained. Babe, another body was found. She could hear the concern in his voice but couldnt respond when her thoughts were moving that fast. She found herself wondering if she had caused it but Avens hand snapped her out of it with a gentle shake. She averted her eyes to his and she stared blankly at him before she could hear what he was saying. Have you seen Special Agent Scott? She shook her head. Alright well go without him. Come on. He took off with Grey but walked back over to her as she and Adrian advanced into a staring contest. Aven knew the tension had blown up and didnt turn out well with one of them, his money was on Kalista. Okay Grey go with Adrian, Ill take Kal. Kalista found herself almost being dragged by Aven to his car. The address was a little out or the way but the long car rid was painfully quiet. No one wanted to get mixed up with When they got to the crime scene everyone was thrown back at the violence, Mason was there and looked more like himself. There was blood everywhere and the knife stuck out of the womans chest. Mason. Kalista called softly waiting for him to explain why the massacre was so different from the other methodic killings. I was afraid of this. Whats happened?

77

Hes evolved, something pushed him off the edge, he didnt clean-up or leave a note, he probably just fled. Hes at his most dangerous and Im afraid unpredictable. I cant tell you where hes going next. We need this guy, at this rate he can do anything. We need to start narrowing our suspect pool with your profile, why are you even here if we cant use the FBI resources, we dont have the databases necessary to catch this guy. Aven said pointedly. Ill see what I can do, Kalista will you ride with me? Kalista nodded and bowed her head as she passed Adrian. The three detectives were left with crime scene unit and Willow for a few more hours before they retired back to the precinct. So Adrian finally told Kalista huh? Grey said from beside his partner on their way back to the precinct. You picked up on that too? Course I did. How did you know you wanted to be Francine? Uh, Fran and I knew each other for years, we had a few mutual friends and mostly hung out in group settings. But there was this one night, we were going to a Bon Jovi concert and she wore one of their t-shirts. And something just clicked with me that I wanted to get to know her better. That was it. Youll find her soon. Captain Donovan waited for his detectives in the bullpen. His lips tightened in a straight line, making obvious that something was wrong. Cole, whats on your mind? Aven asked, he was the only who could address that captain as Cole. Where. Is. Mason. Scott? Hes on his way back with Kalista. Grey spoke noting the scowl on Adrians face. Were in trouble for trusting that son of a bi Aven got him off. Cole whats going on?
78

Mason Scott got suspended from the FBI eight months ago. Hes not an active special agent. What? That cant be, he had case files from the previous cases. Adrian was now rattled with anger. So is his profile legit? Grey turned to the captain. It is but he was taking off the case and suspended due to a mental breaking. He was personally invested in the case he was apparently involved with one of the victims, Jada Fitch the sketch artist. He was thrown off by her murder; his colleague said he was never the same. Whoa so this guy will do anything to catch the killer! Adrian was alarmed at the news. That psycho is with Kalista right now, he wants to use her as bait. They should have been back by now. Gogo now, Grey get on the phone with the crime lab have them triangulate Kalistas phone. Captain barked as the three detectives hustled out of the precinct. They rode in dead silence but the tension was thick in the air stifling them with the reality that Kalista may be in danger. I shouldnt have let her go. Adrian mumbled, neither Grey or Aven responded to him knowing it would be in vain. With their back-ups sirens blaring they neared the last known area Kalistas phone was on.

You identify with these women, you know what its like for women like you. Helplessly beautiful, you need to appeal to the killer. Its the only way well catch him, you have too. Masons voice throaty and desperate, his gun fixed at Kalistas head. She was knelt at the side of the road, the headlights of his rented car being the only thing illuminating the approaching darkness around them. Her hands were bound behind her back with her own handcuffs, clothes dis-shelved from the struggle and a darkened eye from Masons initial outburst. His camera phone hovered in front of her face.

79

Say it! He screamed psychotically at her. His pupils dilated and feet began to twitch. This isnt you Mason. You dont have to do this. Dont try and sympathize with me okay, I read the memo, in fact I wrote it. If another woman dies then the blood is your hands. I may not be a profiler Mason, if thats even your name, but provoking is a killer is the worst possible thing to do right. He may not even come for me, he can go on a killing spree. You said that he evolved and is unpredictable. Im not putting any more lives in danger. No! He began pacing. This is the only way, if we leak the video online the killer will see it, hell come for you. He wants you, hes obsessed with you. You Kalista! She flinched at his tone and froze with fair as he pressed the barrel of the gun to her temple. Now SAY IT! As Kalista mentally prepared herself for the inevitable, the gravely feeling she had when she was pressed against the ally wall when she was sixteen years old came back. She didnt have any closure. She didnt start a family of her own, never made it to Paris. She never told her partner how she loved it him to the point where it was painful. She never found her attacker. She had no closure. If it were the end for her she wanted to go out her way. She closed her eyes a one tear rolled down her cheek. What else could she do but cry? Mason Scott! Put the gun down! Kalista swore she was hallucinating, convinced that the desperation to hear his voice again had concocted his voice inside her head. But she heard it again, and it was definitely Adrians voice. Put the gun down, this can only end one way Scott! Kalista opened her eye, Mason still had the barrel of the gun fixed on her head. They were surrounding with patrol cars, the red and blue lights either signaling her freedom or demise she still welcome the distraction from the metal pointed at her

80

head. She looked at the anguish dripping from the eyes of her fellow detectives. Each with their guns trained on Mason. Let her go, you dont want to do this Mason. We know everything. We can work something, but killing Kalista isnt going to help. No, shes the only one who can stop him, dont come near me or Ill shoot. I swear Ill blow her brains out. Mason I know you loved her, I know what she meant to you. Adrians voice was calm and controlled as he put his gun away and approached Mason. You know about Jada? Yes we know, you loved her right. So much, she was everything and he took her away from me. She was so gorgeous, she she loved me too. I know buddy, you cant kill Kalista, shes like Jada too. She does remind me or Jada, their laugh and Jada had grey eyes too. You wouldnt hurt Jada would you? No, I would never hurt her. Then put the gun down. Kalistas chest relaxed as Masons hands lowered. She never saw it coming but he opened his mouth and pulled the trigger. It happened so fast the only sensation she felt was his warm blood splattered onto her face. Her tears fell warm and burned her eyes, she felt sick to her stomach and felt like she would vomit her entire insides. She felt numb and barely responded when Aven rushed to her side. Her skin ice cold to touch as Aven undid her handcuffs, the soreness broke her daze as she was led away from the body. She was mute for next hour, she sat at the back of an ambulance as the young paramedic tended to her bruised wrist and eyes. She could tell that they were worried about her, the three men stood a few feet away from her, all eyes fixed on her. Vision had cleared up but her eyes were still red and
81

puffy from all the crying she had done. Her throat closed up and dry she sat rigid and leaned against the door. Youre good to go detective. She looked down at her bandaged wrist and nodded finally moving. She slowly made her way over to them. Aven had already taken off his jacket and draped around her shoulders. I asked where he was going when he took a wrong turn. She began her voice barely above a whisper. They were all quiet and gave her the time she needed. He said he read the GPS wrong but when I persisted he punched me in the face. It must have been hard because I think I blacked out. When I woke up, we were pulled over and I was handcuffed. He was going to use his phone record me appealing to the killer. He was going to put it on you tube and hoped that the killer noticed. Your turn. Captain tried to reach out to the FBI about using their facial recognition when they informed him that Mason Scott wasnt an active agent, he was suspended. Had a mental break down, he was seeing one of the victims Jada Fitch the sketch artist. It sent him mad literally the hunt for the killer consumed him. Aven said looking carefully at Kalistas passive expression. I should have trusted him. She whispered as if speaking to herself. Its not your fault, we all thought he was an active special agent. Grey rubbed her shoulder but she shook it off. Thats not what I meant. She watched as the recognition appeared in their eyes then walked back to the ambulance without another word.

82

Chapter twelve - Never alone. Kalista waited in the hospital parking lot for Grey. Just as her luck would have it her phone rang. Im fine mother. Youre fine? Kalista somebody tried to kill you, you did not sign up for this. Technically I did. Its not a joke. When you told me you wanted to become a cop I asked you if it was because of the assault. If thats why youre doing this then it needs to stop. Its not I said it back then and Im saying it now. My career has nothing to do with my attack. Leave it at that. I gotta Ma, Greys here. You know you dont have to look so happy, I just got out of the hospital. She said to Grey as he got out of the car with a smug grin. He lifted her in the air and hugged her tightly. What? You know the video feed from the cyber caf. What about it? We got a clear shot of his face, the FBI allowed us to run it through every database they have. It may take some time but this is a lead thats actually going somewhere. I feel like were on to something. Finally, I guess today wasnt all bad. You want to go home? Are you kidding me, we have a solid lead Im going to the precinct. Grey grinned and opened the front seat for her. Nice to have you back Kal. When they got back the precinct was fairly empty, the light in the captains office was still on and a few detectives lithered the bullpen. Adrian wasnt there, she was thankful, the tension wouldnt be stifling.
83

Looks whos back. Aven grinned at her but gave her a tight hug. You scared the crap out of me babe. Im sorry, I promise Ill try and avoid getting kidnap by rogue FBI agents. Oo sarcasm will get you nowhere my Greek goddess. He smiled at her before heading back to his desk. So where is the picture, I wanna see this guy whos been stalking me. Grey handed her the folder, Kalista had always wondered if she would recognize her attacker if she saw him again. It was dark when she was attacked, she had buried the memory for the last ten years but she felt nothing when she saw the picture. She recognized the man, but not as her attacker. I know this man. She said and Aven and Grey looked up at her words. Are you serious, from where? He was outside the precinct, the day my apartment was broken into. He stopped me for I entered the cab hes the suspect. He seemed harmless. We need to go back to the profile, this guy was just a suspect. We have nothing conclusive that hes the killer. Aven being the only level headed one in the room. Are you serious, could there really be a coincidence that he stops Kal on the streets the day she gets a creepy message in her apartment? It has to be him. We cant find him until the FBI get back to us. Wheres Adrian? Kalista finally asked. Hes in the bunks getting some sleep. Why? I just needed to talk to him about something. She said nonchalantly as she looked back the photo in her hands. She thought she would have felt different but she felt nothing. She didnt know the man in the photo. Had she suppressed the memory so much that she could recognize her attacker? She looked at Grey and Aven both looked busy but it was coming out like a word vomit.

84

Can I talk to you guys about something? They looked up at her then exchanged looks with each other. Are you quitting? Are you pregnant? Guys! Im not quitting and Im not pregnant where did you get those ideas? Is this about you and Adrian? Aven looked at her with a smile. She shook her head. Not even that, in private it. The alarms in their heads came on at her expression. The nervous way she played with her hands and the choked out way her words coming out. She took them to an empty interrogation room and explained that she was attacked when she was sixteen, the recent text she had been getting and her theory that the killer and her rapist may be one and the same. Her thought was finished as watched clenched fist and sharp jaws as they processed the news. We got the information back from the FBI. Go do your jobs get this bastard off the streets. Captain closed the door and the detectives shuffled out. Without giving Kalista feedback on her confession. The detectives entered the captains office in a single file line; Adrian was the last to show. Kalista looked his way briefly before averting her eyes back to Captain Donovan. His name is Patrick Dorset, an insurance clerk. He has a history with medicine, but was rejected from med school twice. Hes thirty two years old, take down his address. Go bring him for questioning, hold your cards, we have nothing conclusive on him yet. Ride with me? Kalista looked at Adrian who nodded his response. Kalista and first date jitters, she didnt know if it was the close proximity with Adrian or the impending visit with her supposed rapist. I told Grey and Aven.

85

Thats good, they deserve to know. His voice didnt betray anything but Kalista was thankful for the normalcy of the conversation. Did you see the picture? Yeah I saw it, how do you feel? Nothing, thats the problem, apart from him stopping me on the street it doesnt feel the way I thought it would. Listen about before, I shouldnt have put you on the spot. Its fine, well talk about it. I promise I just dont think its the right time, when this whole mess is over. Okay. Okay.

Apartment 12C, Kalista stared up at the building as the other detectives got out of their vehicles. She wanted to walk up the stairs face the man head on but she couldnt, her body froze and familiar helplessness crashed over her like a tidal wave. I cant do it. She said to Adrian who now stood next to her. I cant do it, I cant believe it. Her shallow breathing got even worst to the point where she had to grip her chest. Kal you need to breathe, breathe. Adrian placed his hands on both her shoulders trying to still her heaving chest. Whats going on? Aven voice came from behind Adrian. Minor panic attack. I cant do this again, Im sorry I cant go in there. Just get him. She looked at Aven for permission even though she already knew he wouldnt let her do something she wasnt comfortable with.

86

Go back to the precinct, well handle it. You didnt do anything wrong, this doesnt make you a weak person. Kalista and watched them walk into the building. Its when she noticed that Adrian hadnt gone with him. She found it a little depressing that she didnt have to ask him to stay, he already knew. She had always felt like Adrian hadnt given her and given up so much for her and she couldnt have an honest conversation with him. Guilt ridden she turned to him and carefully looked at his stoic features. I dont deserve you. He looked at her stunned for a minute and watched her walk away without another word. Kalista paced the small locker room, drilling her black bots into the cemented ground with ever thud accompanied by a sighed. She couldnt function like a normal, things were progressing t fast, shes have to time to manage what was going on; she didnt like having no control. Kal, Adrian stood in the doorway casually. Hands dug deep into his pockets and head bowed. We need to talk. Hes here? Get this, in his bedroom were drawings of his victims in charcoal. Adrian nodded and allowed her to walk ahead of him. Patrick was being hauled into the interrogation room. The minute he saw Kalista he froze and his eyes were fixed on hers. The trained observers noticed the exchange and Kalistas felt her knees give away. Adrian gripped her sides and she felt light headed. Thats him, hes the one who stopped me on the street. Come on Kal, you could do this. Youre not that scared sixteen year old girl again. You grew up into a, strong, confident and beautiful woman. He cant hurt you anymore, youve already won. One reassuring look from Adrian and she was able to move. On shaky stem legs they both stood outside the interrogation room as Grey and Aven danced around the suspect.
87

The man sat stoic with bloodshot red eyes, his hands firmly planted on the desk. He hadnt said a word since he arrived, completely ignoring all their questions. Why did you kill those three women? What do you have against detective Jocosta? He sat for four hours completely still. Kalista grew weary, on top of recent sleep deprivation their suspect was stone cold wall. Adrian stayed by her side the entire time sending worried glances her way every few minutes. I want to talk to the beautiful detective, with red velvet hair. Now! Grey and Aven left the room moments after the man spoke in hours. The lump in Kalistas throat grew double its size as she stood really the man. Behind light green eyes was a brewing darkness that he blinked away several times. His balding head of salt and pepper hair had been brutally pulled back in vain of hiding the balding. His pasty skin was prematurely wrinkled and the bags under his eyes told he probably only got a few hours of sleep for the week. If she didnt know what he was capable of, she might have felt pity for him but he no, he was a killer. You dont have to do it you know. Yes I do. Composing herself behind the door she opened the door and sat across from the man. His eyes beamed and came to life as she sat down, a small smile tugged at the sides of his lips. Whats the matter with you? You killed three womeninnocent. They werent innocent! He screamed back slamming his fist on the cold metal table. They werent innocent. The blonde, she made fun of me to my face in the cyber caf. Theyre all the same. They use beauty to get what they want then they stump on you, because they think that Im nothing. Im nothing, thats what my mother told me. She was beautiful you know, like a movie star. She was beautiful like movie star and she said I couldnt be her son because I wasnt beautiful enough.

88

Im sure your mother didnt say that to you. She didnt have to, I saw it in the way she looked at me. She looked at me with pity. Is that why you killed those women, because they reminded you of your mother? No, no, I killed them because they wasted their beauty. I couldnt help myself, once I started I couldnt stop. I couldnt stop. And what about me? You, you were different, Id never hurt you. Youre so beautiful. He reached out his hand t touch her but she flinched away. I love you! He got up and pushed the steel table away from him. I love you. He screamed hysterically. I love you! He ran into the mirror smashing his head against it in the process. Adrian and Grey rushed into the box to restrain while Kalista shrunk into the corner of her of her room holding herself and keeping her tears at bay. Time to go babe, time to go. Aven held Kalista and her head fell to his shoulder in a loud sob. Her slender body shivering beneath his with her violent sobs. Its okay, its over. She nodded her head making it bounce on her shoulder. He led her out of the room sending looks over at Grey and Adrian over his left shoulder. Its over Kal. We got him. Grey said shaking Kalistas shoulder. She sat motionless at her desk feeling empty and not satisfied with answer she got. He attacked her because he loved her? It made no sense but she couldnt exactly get into the head of a serial killer. We are celebrating tonight for sure, Afi s pub lets go. Aven announced while loosening his tie. Lets do it, Kal are you up for it? She looked up still glassy eyes at Adrian. Nonot tonight. You guys go have fun.

89

Okay, Grey go tell Willow what were doing. Grey left the precinct and followed by Aven. How you doing girl? I dont know yet, I think its still setting in. Go home get some rest well talk tomorrow. Thanks Adrian. She placed her hands on his forearm. For everything. He nodded his head and walked out behind her.

Willow! You here? Grey ducked his head into the morgue. He carefully placed one foot in front of the other, he still hated being surrounded by dead people after hours. Willow, yo, were going to Afis pub to celebrate. The creep confessed! He called out again. This time he stepped into her office. Trying to wipe her moist eyes Willow turned her head when he came in. Hey whats wrong? She shook her head but couldnt speak because of the lump in her throat. Dont say nothing, people dont cry for nothing. She released a frustrated sigh as Grey walked closer to her desk. Some days are better than others. She finally said. Come here. He stooped down to the level of her chair and wrapped his arms around her shoulders. He felt awkward at first, he had the least intimate relationship with Willow out of everyone but she fell into his arms and conformed to his body. Im sorry. She said as he released his grip on her. Dont apologize, its fine. Are you sure youre okay? Ill be fine. Thanks Grey. He caught her eye a smiled at the sincerity behind them. Of all the years he had worked side by side with Willow, he had never noticed the different shades of brown her eyes were. What? She asked when she caught him staring.
90

Hmm, nothingwell just thatuh you have beautiful eyes. Thanks, so the pub? Yeah, sorry I phased out. Why dont I drive you? Id like that. After holding someone while they cried, there arent a lot of barriers to hide behind. He placed his hand at the small of her back and walked her out. Opening the car door for her she smiled in response. Hmm, thats new. He whispered to himself as he walked to the next side of the car.

Aven and Adrian were the first ones at the pub. Dimply lit, reeking of alcohol and cigarette smoke just the way they liked it. Sitting in their usual booth at the back of the bar they order a first round of beers for the others while they waited. You think shes going to be okay? Adrian asked over the corona bottle he was nursing. Shes strong, but how do you even begin to feel normal again after facing your attacker after so many years. I know, its shaken her up. You knew? She told me after the Daniel case, I knew something was up when I found her passed out at the bar. You love her. Aven wasnt asking he just stared knowingly at the younger detective. Worst part is I dont think Ill ever be able to get over it. Then dont. I cant do anything if she doesnt feel the same way. Who says she doesnt feel the same way? I just know it, if she did then she would have done something about it.
91

This Kalista were talking about, if you think shes worth it then fight for her because Im telling that girl is in love with youmore than you know. What do I do? First thing, you dont let her go through this alone. You think shell have me? Dont give her a chance not to, go to her. Adrian looked back at Aven, the hesitancy falling into the hand he held his car keys. Ill see you tomorrow, if she doesnt kill me before. She wont. Aven chuckled at the nervous wreck that was Adrian. Whered he go? Grey asked as he and Willow slid into the booth across from him. Hes going to tell Kalista that he loves her. Its about time. Willow said beckoning a waiter. What its been like two years? Grey asked. Longer, Im sure those two were destined to be together the minute they started working with each other. Aven said while texted Francine that he would be home early.

92

Kalistas shoulders sag she finally felt like she could release a breath she had been holding for the past weeks. As the strain of the case fell off her shoulders she took her phone out and called her mother. Hey, we caught the guy! So its over? Yeah its over. Thats good news sweetie. Lunch tomorrow? Of course, Ill talk to you later Im exhausted so Im gonna try and get some rest. Okay. Kalista staggered into quiet apartment. The case still lingered on her mind, she hadnt been able to leave it alone. She felt like the case had taken everything from her, she had lost a little bit of her sanity and her best friend. She changed from her suit into a soft cotton dress. Her hair remained tangled in natural curls on her back. Too winded up to sleep she turned on her music system but kept it low as she looked for something to cook. As she sauntered over to her refrigerator there was a soft knock on her door. She thought it would have been Adrian but was surprised to see a food delivery man. His brown uniform was name tagged with Paul. He had a scruffy beard and dark eyes. She leaned in her doorway as he took out a clip board. She felt his eyes on her and for some reason it bothered her, she felt like she knew him. Wheres Antonio? she asked softly as she signed her name on the dotted line. Sick day. Poor fella couldnt get out of bed. Kalista smiled at the man and opened her door wider as he wheeled in three boxes. She walked ahead of him and opened the top box, her mouth hung open because the box was empty. She looked up and noticed he had locked the door behind him. His expression was ominous but still with mirth. Youre more beautiful than I remember.

93

Kalista was frozen with fear and her skin begun to crawl with disgust as his eyes scanned over her body hungrily. She knew that voice anywhere, it had hunted her for the last ten years. She gripped the counter for support and begun planning her escape route. She could scream but she wouldnt be heard over her music. But as he approached her, her body went into over drive and she took up the first thing her fingers curled around. It was a coffee maker, the glass shattered against her door and it managed to slow him down she continued pelting him with kitchen appliances and finally a Pyrex dish smashed into his head. He stumbled backwards and she ran for her bedroom door locking it behind her as she dove for her safe. She took her gun out and felt a bang on her door. Open the door. Kalista I love you. Struggling to get her breathing under control she leaned back against the door and tried to remember where her phone was. She cursed because it was still on her couch. Okay Kalista, breathe. She hadnt had a panic attack in over ten years and as timing would have it her heart hammered in her chest. All the training in the world couldnt prepare for it. She felt herself boxed in a scared sixteen year old as her attacker hovered over her tauntingly. He didnt stop banging on her door and sooner the impact became louder and she realized he was gonna break it down.

94

Kal? Adrian felt his heart plummet from his chest to his stomach when he found Kalistas door open. Her kitchen was trashed and appliances were scattered over the floor. Kalista! He called again drawing his own gun from its holster and moving toward her bedroom. When he kicked the door down he saw Kalista a mass of tangled red hair, smudged eye liner and flushed cheeks. She stood over a greasy dark haired man with a beard. His eyes trailed to her fixed gun over his shoulder to her gun trained on the mans head. Had she had a melt down? Kalista what are you doing? She looked from the barely conscious man up to Adrian, eyes blazing. Hes the man who raped me. You told me not to go down this road alone. She said softly, eyes averted back to man on the floor. Then dont do it alone. He walked behind her, dropped his own gun and wrapped his hands around her right hand trained at the mans head. His fingers sought through hers and rubbed her trigger finger sensually before clamping it down on hers. They fired two shots into the mans chest, they both watched as the life seeped out of him. Kalista sighed in relief, the bottled up tension held in her chest for the last two years escaped in the air around him. Leaving the atmosphere rejuvenated. Howd you feel? He asked, hand still glued to hers, body pressed against her back. I feel free. She almost gasp as the words left her mouth. Im glad. He tipped her chin with his fingers guiding her lips to his. They both knew that things would never be the same again.

Epilogue- Invaded Justice. What do you think of this one? I looked back at the man I knew as Bruce. His dark mustache was his trade mark. No, dog bowl out front, porch light. I dont know about you but I dont want to get caught. Youre good. Thats why Im here right. Bruce nodded his head and kept driving, through the suburban neighborhood. Then I spotted it, two stories, no porch light no dog in view. A heavy shadow casted over the house by the slight forestry that surrounded it. It was perfect. This is it. I told Bruce, he stopped a few houses away. My hands tightened around the crowbar in my hands. The adrenaline begun to coarse through veins. This is what I lived for, the rush the high, who needed drugs when there was this. Lets do this. Bruce got out of the car, pulling the black mask over his head. I pulled mine over my head and jumped out the van. He left the engine running for a quick getaway. Stealth wasnt my strong suit, I broke the glass with the crowbar and unlocked the door myself. Bruce stood behind my back watching the streets. Lets go have some fun. A toddler like joy warmed my insides and I ascended the stair case opening the door to master bedroom. I left Bruce to take their valuables, hes nothing but a low life thief. I was a professional. I flicked the light on and watched as the confusion and fear washed over the faces of mom and dad. I pulled my mask off, I wanted them to see me, thats how I liked it. I swing for dad first, he wasnt fast enough. His fingers were barely around the golf club before my crowbar smashed into his head. Woo! I scream because this is what I live for. Mom next, she was heading toward the door, probably to protect the kids but Im not gonna hurt the kids, I have no

business with them. I swing for her and it clashes with her back making her cry out in pain. Shh, mom, youll wake the kids. I struck her again, with more force, the death blow I call it. I look over at Dad because theres no way mommy can survive that. Hes incapacitated by the pain but hes awake and he witnessed everything I did to mom. Sorry Daddy, Ill be gentle I promise. Its the last thing I say before I slash him against the face because its personal. Hey man, you done up there, lets bounce. Bruce calls from downstairs. YeahIm done. Because I am done, its overon to the next
