Timeline Sainsbury Supermarkets Ltd, Nairn Feb 2007 Jun 2007 Meeting with Highland Council officials to discuss

proposed planning application Outline planning application submitted ref 07/00099/OUTNA - 20m project to include 25000ft sales space supermarket, petrol station, 365 parking spaces, 25000ft non-food retail units (10000; 7500;7500), that would create 300 jobs. A supermarket development is being recommended for refusal by planning officials as it breaches the local Development Plan. Highland Council to decide next month. A Sainsbury spokesman said that more than 200 jobs (full time and part time) would be created. Highland Council Committee approves outline planning application for the 20m project. Pettifer Estates (Sainsburys agent) said that they would now consult with the community prior to submitting an application for full planning permission. Given that Highland Council had approved a planning application which was a significant departure from the Development Plan they had a duty to inform Scottish Government who subsequently called the application in for consideration. There would be a public inquiry. Pittifer Estates went into administration therefore there was uncertainty about project. Public Inquiry held. Scottish Government give go ahead for project. Full planning permission approved - 20m project to include 25000ft supermarket, petrol station, 365 parking spaces, 25000ft non-food retail units (ie. 3x units - 10000; 7500;7500). Completion Certificate issued , with the exception of the non-food retail units (25000ft)

Comparison between Sainsburys, Nairn and Redco Milne, Forres Sainsbury, Nairn 20m investment 25,000ft2 sales area 25,000ft2 non-food retail units (10000,7500,7500) 365 car parking spaces Petrol station Would create 300 jobs then Sainsbury spokesman said more than 200 jobs ( a mix of full time and part time jobs Forres Proposal 25m investment 35,000ft2 sales area 45,000ft2 non-food retail units (25000, 10000, 10000) 365 car parking spaces Petrol station Potential for 500 jobs ( a mix of full time and part time posts

General Observations Projects are very similar 25000 versus 35000 (ratio is 1.4) maybe a little simplistic Jobs created - Sainsbury claim over 200 for 25000ft 2 therefore 200 x 1.4 = 280 jobs needed for Forres project

Sainsbury did not build the non-food retail units therefore it would be interesting to find out how many jobs were actually created. I would be surprised if it was anywhere near 200 jobs created in Nairn.
