Follow the Alpine Pass route across Switzerland

By Kurtis Kelly Special to the Trail-Gazette

he Alpine Pass Route begins on Switzerlands eastern border with Liechtenstein and heads westward across the middle of the country to Montreux on Lake Geneva. Known also as the Via Alpina, Swiss National Trail #1 is 220 miles in length, crosses 16 mountain passes, and gains and loses approximately 64,000 feet in elevation along the way. Backpacker Magazine rated the Altdorf-to-Adelboden section of this Route as The Worlds Best Hike in 2010. The Alpine Pass Route is the next program in the Estes Valley Librarys Our Wonderful World series on Monday, July 15 at 7 p.m. and held at National Park Village in the Rocky Mountain Opry Theater at 900 Moraine Avenue, next to The Other Side Restaurant. Admission is free and open to all. In September of 2011, Estes Park residents Linda and Pete Langer began in Altdorf, Switzerland and hiked 120 miles of the route over 19 days ending up just east of Montreux. The couples shortened trek took them through the most scenic section of the route, the Berner Oberland, and through the spectacular Grindelwald and Lauterbrunnen valleys. For many, images of Switzerland conjure the Grindelwald Valley, home to the iconic Eiger. One of the scenic highlights along the way was a trip on the Jungfraujoch Railway (the highest in Europe) through a tunnel blasted through the rock of the Eiger that allowed them to hike on the Aletsch Glacier, the largest in the Alps. The couple occasionally diverged from the standard APR to take a route that had more scenic appeal. One such diversion

Linda and Pete Langer hiked 120 miles through many scenic areas of Switzerland. was taking the climbers route to the base of the Eiger, where mountaineers begin their ascent of the infamous North Face. In all, the Langers enjoyed a spectacular trip capable of being repeated by any fit hiker. Mondays presentation will feature colorful photos of this visually inspiring region as well as insights and tips for those planning such a trip. Linda and Pete Langer retired to Estes Park five years ago from the west coast of Florida. As a prelude to full retirement, they quit their jobs in architecture and computer systems analysis, respectively, and spent six months living out of their car while hiking, camping, and backpacking from the Texas coast to the San Juan Islands of Washington State. This experience gave them a taste of what an adventurous retirement could be like. Then, after spending a test winter in Estes Park and meeting the many fascinating locals, the deal was sealed. The librarys Our Wonderful World series is presented as a learning and personal storytelling opportunity that celebrates magnificent destinations near and far. The library offers a special thankyou to the Webermeier family and the staff of National Park Village, as well as the performers of Rocky Mountain Opry, for their generosity in providing this Mondays event space. The location is a stop on the Brown Route of the free Estes Park shuttle. For more information on the Our Wonderful World series and other upcoming programs, contact the library at (970) 586-8116 or visit estesvalleylibrary.org.

A dizzy day
I, along our friends Ray and Connie, are getting on a plane and heading there. Its a good thing I have a sweetheart like Catherine, because on Sunday evening she had to take me to the Emergency Dept. at Estes Park Medical Center. I was dizzy, unable to track in a straight line, and nauseated too. The Emergency Dr. took a look in my ears, had the wax removed, maneuvered my head to help get over the dizziness, gave me a few pills to use until the pharmacy opened, and sent me home. I saw my own medical care taker yesterday and I have an inner ear infection. She gave me a prescription for ear drops and antinausea patches for behind my ear. They are working pretty well. Im still a little dizzy but Im able to get around without falling or running into things, and Im not nauseated any more. Since we had our cruise See RIDE, pg. 15

and motel paid for, bags packed etc. Catherine said we are going even if she had to push me around in a wheelchair. And Id have bet she would have done it. I have some relatives up there with a cabin we can stay in for a few days. They have been there for quite some time and it will be nice to have someone direct us toward things to do. Well be back in about two weeks. I have a bit more good news. I can officially call myself an author now. My book, tentatively called GHOST BEAR ISLAND, was picked up by a publishing company and it should be out in October or November. I got the contract all signed and sent back to them. Im pretty happy about it, thats for sure. Ill keep everyone apprised of the progress, and plan to have a book signing in Estes Park when its released. We had Skeeter visiting with us over the weekend. He has totally worn out his boots so we had to get him some new ones. He is four years old and a bit small for his age, but his feet seem to be about the normal size. We got him some new cowboy boots, with leather pistols on the uppers. I wasnt sure of how his mom might react, but it looks like everything is okay in that situation. His boots cost just about as much as a pair of my work boots. When he has them on, he adds a neckerchief, western shirt, white straw hat and puts spurs on his boots. Hes quite the little cowboy. RIDE EASY PARDS.Vic

The cataract surgery process and installation of multi focal lenses in my eyes was a wonderful enhancement to my life. Now I can see like a hawk!
Gary Shanafelt, Estes Park
hen you are an outdoorsman and cant see due to cataracts, you want help. For Gary Shanafelt of Estes Park, Dr. Kirk and his staff were top notch. Everyone was so helpful and concerned about my comfort, but Dr. Kirks surgical expertise was of most importance. I was treated with such respect and dignity, that I felt I was the only patient being served. This was truly one of the best medical experiences ever in my life. Now Gary is back to enjoying his outdoor pursuits of hunting, fishing, hiking and motorcycles. And, he can see better than ever, I can thread a needle, see distances and everything in between. Thanks, Dr. Kirk!

his week Ive decided to write about some Home Spun Research. My summer has brought in a number of activities that have proven to me that some basic healthy habits can honestly make your summer better. So my summertime Home Spun Research includes a sharp knife, regular strength training and taking a shower. Home Spun #1: This began with a watermelon and a cantaloupe, which just happen to be left on the counter for a number of days for everyone in the family to enjoy. For some reason I hadnt found the time to cut them up and my kids hadnt bugged me to the point of doing so on their request. So after around five or six days of moving those melons around on my counter, I finally cut them up and had them in a bowl in the refrigerator for all to enjoy. Lets see, Im thinking the bowl was consumed in approximately 30 minutes. So that means, five days in the unprepared state of consumption versus 30 minutes in the ready to eat state. This little home-spun research project just goes to show you that having the healthier choices available and prepared to eat, will give those raiding the refrigerator a healthier snacking choice. Home Spun #2: Opportunities are abundant for outdoor activities this time of the year. Hiking, golfing, kayaking, cycling have got my
