GRADUATION FILLED WITH JOY

COMMENCEMENT ADDRESS
By: Frederick Stecker, D.Min; Psya.D raduates, parents, family, faculty, and friends: I would like to reflect on this day (as all commencement speakers do), and to suggest ways for you to embrace the future. I would then like to ask you to consider what you might do for this school. Learning to live. When I graduated from military school that would have been the last thing that I wanted to hear at commencement; and I imagine that the last thing that you want to hear is that learning is a lifetime task. It is natural for us at each stage of life to think that we are competent and complete; we are, by nature, somewhat blind to the future. And so today I would like to plant some seeds about learning to live as they have come about in my own life and for you in embracing new possibilities for the future. Today is your graduation day; it is called commencement. Commencement means, to start, to begin, as in the order commence firing! Learning to live means living with the conviction that theres more around the corner and that it is better to live in hope and holy surprise. Part of your experience here at The Howe School has been geared toward helping you to step back, to ask questions,

and to learn critical thinking so that you can perceive truth. Living in hope, learning to question learning to live! Learning to live. Each day is a commencement; when truth confronts fear, miracles happen, learning to live is not about winning, but helping others win too. Learning is a gift. You are a gift to your family, your friends and to this school. One final note: I want you to keep in touch with this school. The faculty here at The Howe School has watched you grow, learn, struggle and succeed. They are invested in you; let them know how you are doing. And so we all say to you Keep learning and be well! ABOUT DR. STECKER Frederick Stecker, PhD, is an Episcopal minister and a student of religion and culture. He holds doctorates from Bangor Theological Seminary, Bangor, ME, and from The Institute for the Study of Violence of the Boston Graduate School of Psychoanalysis, Brookline, MA. Dr. Stecker is the author of: The Podium, The Pulpit, and the Republicans: How Presidential Candidates Use Religious Language in American Political Debate, a book about the convergence of politics, religion, and national identity in the United States since 1971.

VALEDICTORIAN SPEECH
By: Wesley Mykrantz
Years in Attendance: 4 Future Plans: Attend University of Toledo

ve seen a lot of people come and go over my four years at this school. All but two of the people in my class that started out with me are gone. Thats what makes it so special to be a part of this group right here, the class of 2013. Ive also seen a lot of teachers come and go, all of which I would like to thank for providing me with the opportunity to learn and give me the tools to become successful. I would also like to thanks my parents for sacrificing time, money, and other jobs to ensure I could stay at this school. If not for Howe I dont know where I would have ended up. And so after four years of hard work we can finally call ourselves high school graduates.

8th GRADE SPEECH

By: Brandon Barton
Years in Attendance: 1 Future Plans: Attend Howe in the 2013-2014 year

y new life and great future all began four years ago, on the first day I started at Howe. I chose to be here because it is a military school. Howe has taught me a lot: the rules and military system have trained me to be a leader, I learned how to shine my shoes, I learned how to make a perfect bed and I learned how to speak properly and respectfully to adults and leaders. Ive always thought about and imagined the day I would graduate, and now here it is, everything just went by so fast. Four years ago, my freshman class started with about 25 people, and now we only have 3 of us that have made it through the four years. Dont get too relaxed. Now we have found ourselves at a crossroads; the big step from high school to college or the real world. For all the underclassmen, good luck on the final exams next week, and to all the seniors, good luck with your college life and your future, I hope I will see you all again. Thank you!

his year has been a good one for the 8th grade class. I remember some funny times, like when some people in the company put mattresses in front of my door as a prank; the funny thing is that by the time I got up, they had gotten in trouble and were putting the mattresses back. We had bad times too, like in the winter when we were all in the company for such a long time and there were some fightsbut we made it through. Or sometimes in sports we were all tired and yelling at each other, but we all made it out alive. I made a lot of friends in the high school and middle school; there is no one in this school I can call an enemy. Im going to miss the seniors; I have made some good friends, and I wish them good luck in the future and that they will have a great life. Some of us wont see each other next year so Id like to say it was nice to live with all of you in Lima this year, and Id like to thank all my teachers, Mr. and Mrs. DeFelice and all my coaches. Thank you.
