More if the server has more than 16 GB of RAM

Options for Upgrading and Migrating


Upgrading to Windows Server 2012: Can upgrade from x64 editions of Windows Server 2003, Windows Server 2003 R2, Windows Server 2008, and Windows Server 2008 R2. Can only upgrade to same or higher edition. Requires same processor architecture.

Migrating to Windows Server 2012: Must migrate from x86 version of Windows Server. Can use Windows Server Migration Tools feature.

Add a server role or feature.

List the tools available from Server Manager.


Open the Start menu. Log off the currently logged on user. Restart Windows Server 2012

Switching Between Server Core, Full, and Minimal Server Interface Options
You must have access to an installation source to convert

from Server Core to the full version unless you have already installed the necessary components.

You can install Server Core from sconfig.cmd

You can remove the full version from Windows Server

2012 by removing the following features: Graphical Management Tools and Infrastructure Server Graphical Shell
