Newcomers Lu-Wow!
by Revae Moran, Social Committee
Many, many thanks to Madeline and Jack OMalley and their committee for the wonderful Newcomers Luau! Over 100 people, including 20 new members, attended this kick-off-the-summer party, which was a total blast. Attendees couldnt say enough about the delicious barbecued beef and ribs, and the decorations set a high standard indeed. Even the temperature out by the pool was a comfortable, Hawaii-like 75 degrees. The only thing missing was ten-foot surf rolling onto the beach. In a Beacon exclusive, we have obtained the two top-secret recipes of the two punch recipes that were served. See Page 11 for details. Committee members Leeza Bond, Gloria and Dave Curry, Carol Hamrick, Anthony Moran, Mario Moreno, Andrea Steierman, Mike and Lew Wetzel, Carol and Glen Whited all worked hard to pull off this event.

At the Newcomers Luau, new members had their formal introductions to the Club well, as formal as things get at MVYC. Christine & Alexis Stovropoulos (above) and John & Judy Cahill (below) were among some 20 new members in attendance. (Photos: George Holthaus)

Memorial Celebration For Lisa Winkler

MEMBER PHOTO GALLERY Okay, so you met a nice couple at an MVYC social event; you participated in an engaging and lively discussion; then, twenty minutes later, you drew a complete blank on their names. Or, you read an article in The Beacon about someone you think you know, but youre not certain. Dont you hate that? Sure you do. Thats why MVYC now has a new-and-improved Member Photo Gallery on the Clubs web site. Each photo includes the names of the members. The gallery will be in a password-protected page accessible only to MVYC members. So far, the gallery includes about 80 photos nearly a third of the Club. Thats a wonderful start. The more we get, the more useful it will be. We are also going to start asking new members for photos as part of the regular interview process. If your picture isnt in the gallery, lets get one! If you have a favorite, email it to Webmaster Mark Thompson (webmaster@MountVernonYacht Club.com). Or, find a picture of yourself on the Clubs web site and tell Mark which one to use. If you dont do computers, just contact Mark, or any member of the Board and well arrange to take your picture. Better still, track down Beacon Photographers George Holthaus or Russell Poe at a social event and ask them to take your picture for the gallery. Hopefully, this Member Photo Gallery will be another way that technology brings people together!
All Club members may submit pertinent articles, letters and notices for editorial review and possible publication. Submission by e-mail or diskette is encouraged.

As many of you already know, MVYC member Lisa Winkler passed away unexpectedly on May 29th. Our thoughts are with Steve and his family as they come to terms with this difficult loss. A memorial service will be held at the MVYC Clubhouse on Monday, June 28th from 4pm to 9pm. All are invited to visit any time during the evening. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to any charity. Memorial donations may also be made to the Mount Vernon High School Varsity Baseball Team, c/o Jim Linza, Mount Vernon High School, 8515 Old Mount Vernon Road, Alexandria, Virginia 22309. The Bosuns Whistle

Jim Hamrick, Commodore
The summer season has arrived, the pool has opened, boats have returned to the marina, sailing races are occurring on Sundays and the power boaters are rafting together almost every weekend. The Newcomers Luau was fun with twenty new members in attendance. Jack and Madeline OMalley and their committee did a great job, and everyone had a good time. Jim Borches, looking really great in his grass skirt, set a new standard for dress at this party. Jim needed a break from all his hard work getting the pool ready to open, and he was finally able to test the water with a little help from his friends. Steve Donock joined him and now needs a new cell phone. As we have come to expect, the county inspectors once again were able to find a minor problem with the pool, but allowed us to open anyway with a promise to

correct the deficiency. It seems that after some 40 years of operating without a top bar on the backside of the pool fence, we now must install one. During the first week of July, the front of the club will be landscaped. This project is possible thanks to a generous donation from the Garden Club. The plan should give us a good look for all seasons, and be easier to maintain. Thanks again to the Garden Club for their support and help with this project.

Jim Borches set a new standard for dress at the Luau ...

We still need to replace the ice machines in both bars with more reliable models. If anyone has any ideas, please call David Miskimens. The carpets on all floors have been cleaned and still look good after three years of use. We have a few small slips available in the marina. If you would like to rent one for a first or second boat, call John Leary to ask about availability. Please continue to place any driftwood removed from the marina in the dumpsters. This is particularly important around the launching ramp, as wood left on the grass can be a hazard to people launching their boats. Left: Jim Borches made a fashion statement with I am sad his smart-looking grass skirt. Was it a positive to report that statement? You decide. Below: In a dangerous Lisa Winkler game of one-upsmanship, Steve Donock hiked up his grass skirt to eyebrow level for the Cousin It passed away look. Vengeful fashion rivals later pushed him into after a sudden the pool, leaving him to flagellate like a hideous illness. Steve green jellyfish. (Photos: George Holthaus) and Lisa have been active in all aspects of the Club. Lisa will be missed by all who knew her. There will be a memorial service at the Clubhouse on Monday, June 28th, and all members are invited to attend. Our sympathies are with Steve and his family.

On Your Mark
Mike MacNair, Swim Team by Ellen MacNair
What better way to spend your Saturday morning then watching five-year-olds Lauren Thomas and Thomas Wise being cheered by their fellow team mates of ages 5 to 17? Even better to see their face when they receive a third-place ribbon! The success of this little swim team is greater than the points received it lies in the team building spirit shared among this great group of swimmers.

New coaches Brooke Sober and John Gullickson seem to be getting down to business as many swimmer are dropping time in double digits! Jack Kneteman dropped 13 seconds in his IM, sister Megan Kneteman dropped a total of 27 seconds in four events, Greg Wise dropped 10 seconds overall, and Rachelle Nelson had personal bests in both free and back. Cara Spivak took down last years 9/10 25-meter butter fly record with a time of 22.23! Both Greg and Dan Muir have contributed heavily to the team before heading off to New Hampshire. Team Captain Meghan MacNair, Wyatt Floyd and Mike Knettman are doing a great job with team spirit. Upcoming meets include the always-fun rival meet against Mount Vernon Country Club on July 6th at the Country Club. The Springfield meet is on June 26 at home.

Membership News
Bart Hewitt, Membership
I love that magic word, "reciprocity." Evelyn and I spent a week at Deep Creek Lake in western Maryland. We took our sailboat and needed a place to launch it. Down the road from our rented cottage we found the Turkey Neck Yacht Club, and I boldly trespassed in and met a nice young man very good looking, like Ruckman, only taller. I told him I was a member of MVYC and asked if I could use their ramp. "You bet!" he replied, "You have RECIPROCITY!" Even though my doctor had never told me that, I was glad to have a place to launch. So I had launch at the Turkey Neck Yacht Club. Har. Speaking of Nancy, our July anniversaries include some notable Nancys. Nancy Leary joined away back in 1972. Don & Nancy Niebuhr came in 1981, and Jim & Nancy Lawler wandered in around 1982. Plus you have your non-Nancy members Jack & Janet Ferris who found us in 1977 and that rascally Don Waller who dropped by in 1984. John & Linda Donelan figured it was a good idea in 1987. It is still a good idea. And wouldn't you know, we have more new members to welcome! This month we welcome Gary and Betty Jean Hall as well as Wayne and Maureen Mason. The Halls live on Scotland Road, and the Masons live on Tarpon Lane. Look for them at MVYC events. Our membership now stands at 228, two short of the cap, and I expect we will welcome two or three more new families by this time next month. One reminder if you change your address, or phone number, or email address, be sure to let me know so that you can continue to receive the Beacon and MVYC notices and other important stuff. 2, 4, 6, 8 - you, too, can reciprocate.

New Member Spotlight

New Members: We would love to introduce you by publishing a few paragraphs describing your family. Please contact Marge Skelly (mmskelly@juno.com or 703-360-8374) or Membership Chair Bart Hewitt (Hewitts.House@Verizon.net or 703-550-6023).

Christine and Alexis Stovropoulos have lived in the Hollin Hall area since 1993. Christine is a lifelong resident of the Mount Vernon area, and Alexis is originally from Pennsylvania. He has worked for a local developer, Eakin-Youngentob for the last nine years and now is the manager of their customer service department. Alexi loves power boating, and it has rubbed off on the rest of the family. Christine has been self-employed as a transcriber for local court reporting companies since the birth of their daughter, Zoe. Christine enjoys reading, needlepoint and cooking. Zoe is currently a first grader at Waynewood Elementary School. She also attends Saint Katherines Greek School in Falls Church. Zoe loves school, dancing, swimming, and her black lab, Jessie. They are looking forward to enjoying the pool and the many activities at MVYC and making new friends. Chris, Nancy and Matt Moscoso have lived in Alexandria for about 18 years. They finally found a house this spring on Dougue Creek just so they could be closer to MVYC. Chris and Nancy grew up in North Carolina and are true Tarheels. Chris is the founder and CEO of a small high-tech defense contracting firm. He hopes a larger firm will buy him out so he can just go fishing every day. Nancy is a VP for Merck and a strong supporter of Chriss boating habits. The whole family enjoys boating and all water activities. Chris is a power catamaran nut and will try to convince you of the advantages of his odd looking boats. Matt is the star of the family. He will be starting second grade next year and enjoys all sports but especially soccer, baseball and swimming. Dad also makes him fish a lot which he claims to enjoy, although he is strictly a catch-and-release man. They also have a wonderful dog named Sam (Samantha) who likes swimming, boating and fishing in that order. Sam follows Matt everywhere. They all look forward to spending more time at MVYC this summer and making new friends.

around 10ish. Dont worry, the next day is the 4th of July, a holiday! This is going to be FUN. Get a crew and bring some refreshments for the evening cruise and get-together after on the docks. Flyers are posted in the Clubhouse. Also, please mark your calendar for the July 10 Alexandria fireworks. Unfortunately, the Old Town docks are still messed up from the hurricane, so well watch the weather and plan for a raft-up.

The Mattawoman raft-up was a gas! We had 13 boats show up and over thirty people and 3 dogs! The weather was perrrrrfect and we danced the night away on the foredeck of Chris and Dianes boat! Check out the website for some of the photos, thanks to Russell Poe. The MVYC Parade of lights tour is in a few days. Grab some Christmas lights, or run to Home Depot or Wal Mart to get a rope light or two of the red, white, and blue variety. String them along your mast, railings or any other vessel appendage. If you dont have a generator, pick up a DC to AC inverter. All you need is 200-300 watts to run a couple strings of lights, and your engine alternator will keep your vessel charged as we motor through the night. I did some testing last month and it works! Decorate your boat and show up for the event. We will probably get into position at Buoy 67 around 8:30pm. Then we will head North, parade past the Mount Vernon mansion waterfront and make our way to Mockley Point and then return (8 miles round trip). An easy pace of 4 5 knots will get us back to MVYC

Second Annual

Heres the plan:

1. Decorate your vessel with as many red, white and blue lights as your electrical power system can handle. Even if you dont have a generator, use a DC-to-AC inverter! Make sure your connections and attachments are safe.

2. Get a fun crew to join you, charge your batteries, and bring some refreshments, since well be out there for an hour and a half on a beautiful evening. 3. Sign up with David Miskimens or Brian Burke. 4. Meet us in Dogue inlet, west of Buoy 67 at 8:30pm. 5. We will use the VHF radio to stay together and align our parade (Channel 69)

6. The tour will start as it gets dark, probably around 8:45pm and we will motor, single file, at approximately 4-5 knots. This should run your engine(s) at a speed that will keep your battery(s) charged. We will mix the sail boats with the power boats to make an interesting profile. The course is about 8 miles round trip and should take about 90 minutes. 7. We will tour the Maryland shore northbound to a spot near Mockley Point, then turn and follow the Virginia shore back to our marina. We will have vessels with radar and GPS to keep us clear of buoys, other boats, and shallow water. Well be in radio contact with all Captains during the tour. We should arrive back at our marina around 10:30pm.

More hosts and helpers are needed call Marge at 703-360-8374. Upcoming events include the Youths Pool Party on Sunday, July 18th at 6 pm (ages 8 to 18) hosted by Cara Spivack, and the 2nd Annual MVYC Parade of Lights on Saturday, July 3rd. Dont forget the all-day 4th of July Festivities including a softball game at Grist Mill Park, hot dog lunches served poolside by the Swim Team, fun and games at the pool, and picnicking all afternoon and evening on the Point. Finally, dont miss the End-of-the-SummerSeason Potluck on Sunday, September 5th (Labor Day weekend) at 6 pm on the Point. Bring your whole family, something to barbeque, and a side dish to share. This party will be informal and held only if the weather permits! The calendar lists MVYC events for July and August. As you will see, there is a wealth of events from which to choose. See you at the Club! interest in continuing All-Member Potlucks in the Fall, please contact Juliette Clark. We need hosts for these events if we are going to continue them. Tentative dates are September 25th, October 30th, and November 27th (the last Saturday of each month). The October party will be very special, with a bonfire and Jack OLanterns at the Point. (costume contest anyone?) These parties are easy to host, so if youre new to MVYC, this is a great way to meet people and learn how to run a party. If just three more people volunteer, then we have an AllMember event guaranteed for each month in the Fall! (Contact juliette.clark@eds.com, 703-360-9803)

Family-Friendly Activities Continue

by Juliette Clark, Social Committee
This summer, the All-Member potluck nights have morphed into no-host splash parties. As is our tradition, the only sweat at this party is from the heat of the day, rather than by the party planning. If you are in town on July 31st and August 28th, come down to the pool at 6:00 PM for an evening relaxing by the pool. Bring a cooler, and something to share if you like; motivated people can organize a pizza or wings order after everyone arrives. Set up the poolside tables, bring down paper goods from the

kitchen, and you have an instant party. There is a flyer in this issue with more information. Reinstating another MVYC tradition, the Social Committee has authorized a Kids-Only pool party on July 18th. Hosted by Cara Spivack, this party features pizza, soda, and most importantly, no parents. (Kids aged 8-18 are welcome, and chaperones will be present.) Members that grew up in the Club have fond memories of kidsonly parties at the pool. Well try this event with a new generation and see how it goes. Check out Caras flyer on page 10 for details. The Beacon wont be published again until September. If there is
