CHAPTER II ANALYSIS OF THE pearl

A. Theme
The theme of this novel is the secret of Seris people murder. This was influence the human life around the coastal area. They never find the better life because they still dont find where their ancestor were and who killed them are. This question answered when Kino found The Pearl of the world.

B. SYMBOL
The symbol in this story is The Pearl that has meaning as an evil symbol. When Kino diving he found The World Pearl. It showed Kino who are the killers of Seris people were lost for a few years. The pearl is reveal the big secret hidden in Seris people for a long time.

C. Characters
The characters in this story are: Kino: Based on the main parts and roles of the story , Kino is the major character of this story. Kino has almost part in the story. The story begin from Kino was child until he live with Juana and has a child, Coyotito. Based on the normative value, Kino is a protagonist character. Kino responsible with his family, he realizes his role in his own family and takes full responsibility to do what is

necessary to fulfill his familys need, care with another people, quite man at harmony with nature and another people like with him. Based on the personal traits of this story, Kino is a flat character. His personality can be predicted. He want to make his family life better. Based on possibility to change, Kino as dynamic character, because Kino can be angry to his wife when his wife dont to hear what the Kino say after that Kino become be better after that, and Kino can do anything to protect his family and the pearl Kino for example can be kill people.

Juana: Based on main parts and roles of the story , Juana plays a minor character. She just tried to show her loyality to her husband with always accompany him along his journey. She fulfills her responsebility to keep her husband and child. Based on the personal traits of this story, Juana has a flat character. Her personality can be predicted. He always wants to be with her husband and child. Based on the possibility to change, Juana has a static character. She has the same personality along the story. Based on normative value, Juana is a protagonist role. She never shows the contradiction with another character in the story. When she knows that the pearl is evil she attempts to save her family by throwing it into the sea. The Doctor:

Based on the main parts and roles of the story, the doctor plays a minor character. He always show arrogance and lies. Based on the personal traits of this story , the doctor plays a round character. Because of his greed, he also tried to take the pearl from Kino. But actually it is not the only one his attention, he also tried to kill Kino. Based on the possibility to change, the doctor is a static character. He shows the same characteristic, namely arrogance and liar. Based on a normative value, the doctor plays an antagonist role. His characteristic is really contradicted with the protagonist. His greed make him try every way to get the pearl from Kino, include the way he try to kill Kino.

The Priest: Based on the main parts and roles of the story , he plays a minor character. The story is not focus him. Based on the personal traits of this story, the priest plays a round character. At first time Kino and Juana met him to treat their baby. He got angry knowing Kino came to the church with his wife and child without married. But at last he wanted to treat and baptize Kinos child because of his goodness.

Based on the possibility to change, the priest is a dynamic character. At the end of this story, it shows that the priest just try to exploiting Kino in order to persuade him to give him some money. Based on a normative value, he plays an antagonist character. All of his goodness at the beginning of this story is just to exploiting Kino.

Juan Thomas: Based on the main parts and roles of the story, he plays a minor character. But he always there while Kino was in the problem. Based on personal traits of this story, he plays a flat character. He always shows his deeply loyal to his young brother, Kino. He decides to accompany Kino in his plan to go to the North. Based on the possibility to change, he plays static character. He shows his goodness for Kino, Juana, and Coyotito. Based on normative value, he plays a protagonist role. Juan Thomas always supports Kino about the danger for keeping the pearl. He always tries to keep his brother from it.

The doctor servant : Based on the main parts and roles of the story, he plays a minor character. He works for the doctor with his wife and obeys all of the doctor commands.

Based on the personal traits of the story , he plays a round character. Because at the end of the story he want to kill the doctor because of his big greed. It was unpredictable. He will shoot the doctor by a gun if he want try to canceling Kinos plan to back the pearl in the sea. Based on the possibility to change, he plays a static character. Whatever the doctor do to him he just wanted to obey all of his commands. Based on the normative value, he is an antagonist. Because his willing to follow the doctors command is contradict with the protagonist.

Coyotito or Juan Cayotito: Based on the main part or roles in the story, he is a minor character. He is Kinos son who innocence and ignorance. He always appear but the story not focus to his.

Apolonia : Based on the main part or roles in the story, she is a minor character, because the story not focus on her. She ia Juan Thomas wife. Based on the normative value, she is protagonist character. She is helpful, tolerant, and supportive of her husband and Kinos family. Based on the possibility to change, Apolonia is static character. There is no change about her characterization until the story end.

 The Dealers of pearl : The buyers of pearl there are three people. Based on the main part or roles in the story, the sellers of pearl is minor character because the story not focus on them. They are a slippery and only concern on their own problem that is how to trick the divers to get pearl in cheaper price. Based on the possibility to change , they are static character. There is no change of their characterization until the story end.

Silvano Based on the main part or roles in the story, he is minor character. He appear but the story not focus for him.

D.SETTING
This story mostly happened in the Mexican coastal village called La Paz, probably on the Baja Peninsula. That village is the settlement of The Seri people. This setting supports the content of this story that describes the occupation of Seri people as the pearl hunter in the sea.

E. Conflict
The conflicts are between man and man: The first conflict begins when Juana asked Kino to meet the doctor after knowing their children, Coyotito was bitten by a scorpion. The second conflict when Kino and Juana came to the church and met the priest to safe their son from the death, because the doctor can not help them. The priest got angry with Kino and his Wife because they have not ever married yet. The

third conflict between Kino and the doctor servants in the sea near the cave where he was hide with his family. He killed the servants when he tried to save his family.
F. Plot

BEGIN/EXPOSITION The exposition of the characters of the story begins when Kino went for sailing with the Seri

people. One of them told Kino that they ancestors were the musicians. Everything they do is always accompanied by music. He also told Kino that he must feel the music by his soul. Kino tried to feel the music by his soul. At night, he dreamed there were some people killed by the strangers. He told the dream to his mother whether they were Seri people that was lost. But his mother said that one day he will find the answers. That nightmare always comes to Kinos sleep until his adulthood. This stage shows the problems and the conflicts in this story is started. RISING ACTION / COMPLICATION Raising action of this story is started when Kinos son, Coyotito, was bitten by a scorpion. Everybody was panic. Kinos wife, Juana, asked him to call the doctor to treat their son, but Kinos did not do it. The reason is because the doctor will not help them as poor people, they do not have money to pay the doctor. Juana force to bring her baby to the doctor. The doctor did not want to help them because knowing the pearls is worthless. They tried to go to the church and asked the priest to baptize their son. CRISIS/ CLIMAX The climax of this story begins when Kino went sailing. He dive in the sea and heard music like what he heard when he was child. He followed the sound until he found the worthiest pearl in the sea and he found the pearl of the world.

FALLING ACTION When Kino, Juana and their son hiden in the cave because they hunted by killer which asked

by Dr.Karl. Kino found ancestors skeleton and stick. He remember his dream and want to avenge with kill the killer which has killed Kinos ancestor.

RESOLUTION/DENOUEMENT Falling action happens when Kino came to the village and told the information to the society

that their ancestor was found and killed by the gun. Kino realized that the pearl is caused problems in his life, such as evil, greedy, death. Kino decides to throw the pearl back to the sea.

CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION

I think this story tell about the struggle that opened that not affair or the death of people. Kino has destiny to know about the mystery the death of the people in his village with The Pearl. The things that happened to Kino in The Pearl, such as he to do anything to fullfil necessary of his family and protect them. And this story taught us about how people act. I learned that family is more important than money and dont become greedy with money, this life not everything about money but peace life from reading about him and his life. We disagrre with the ending of this story because Dr.Karl have not punishment from his habit, whereas Dr.Karl is trickster and greedy man.
