The palace was no more than ruins and the guide explained to us the layout. At one end was the king's room and at the other end the Queen's. In addition there were 17 more rooms numbered 1 to 17, each of which had doors connecting it to the other rooms adjoining it. In order to visit the queen, the king had to pass through these rooms but the path he took always followed an ascending order of numbers. The king had offered a bag of gold to any one who could work out the number of different paths that the king could take but there is no record in history of anyone claiming the same. "Seems it was a kingdom of fools" said the guide, "because it ain't all that difficult". If you were the guide how many solutions you have? Ans: There are atleast 748 solutions. The numbers in brackets denote the no. of ways to reach that particular room.

A movie in the making, shows a rich landlord taking his sweet heart to the Taj Mahal in his majestic coach pulled by six horses. Useful technical data is follows A. Circumference of front wheels 2.5 m B. Circumference of rear wheels 2.75 m C. Number of radial arms in each wheel 12 D. Speed of coach at the time of shooting 18 kmph In what direction would the coach wheels appear to be moving when the scene is projected on to the screen? Solution: Front wheel stationary Back wheel rotating backwards Reason: If the number of projections per second is sixteen or less , the average human eye notices a flicker on the screen . In order to ensure that even the extra sensitive human eye get the feel of continuous smooth motion without any flicker , 24 projections per second has come to stay as the standard rate in motion pictures. Let's now analyze the scene in the light of this fundamental knowledge. 18 kms an hour corresponds to a speed of

5m/s. Thus the front wheels go through two rotations every second and, as a result, each radial arm in the front wheels advances through 30 degrees in successive projection every radial arm would advance to the position previously occupied by the leading it. To the eye there would be no difference in the successive images of the front wheels. Consequently, the front wheels would appear to be stationary. The rear wheels, being slightly bigger, go through somewhat less than two rotations (20/11 rotations to be precise) every second; so, each radial arm in the rear wheels advances through slightly less than 30 degrees in successive projections. Thus, in each successive projection, every radial arm would advance to a position slightly behind that previously occupied by the one leading it. To the eye it would appear that the radial arms are slowly moving in the opposite direction. Thus the rear wheels would seem to be rotating as if the coach was moving backwards at a slow speed (corresponding to 1.8 kmph). The forward movement of the coach would be simulated by the background moving in the opposite direction. However, this, coupled with the stationary front wheels and the rear wheels rotating backwards, is bound to produce a very unrealistic effect. Indeed, a technically poor shot.

1. What do you think is the maximum possible no. constructed using 4 digits(obviously not 9999). Ans: 9^(9^(9^9))) 2. A three letter word resembles POT, DAY and FRY in an odd number of letters and TOY, TRY and CRY in an even number of letters(zero also counts as even). If resemblance implies identical letters at the same position, find the word. Ans: FAT 3. Here some Alphabet series... What can be the next one in this series? SSS SCC C SC SSSS ___

(Clue(?): The 'S's are not the 'S's and the 'C's are not the

'C's. The 'S's have something to do with the S's and the 'C's have something to do with the C's). Ans: SSS Expl: The S's denote the straight lines and C's the curves. So the above series denotes the alphabetic series with A having 3 st. lines (in paper), B having 1 st. line & 2 curves and so on. 4. One more series What can be the next nine alphabets in this series? (Don't get confused with the previous question) O,T,T,F,F,S,S,E,N Ans: T,E,T,... Expl: The series is formed by taking the 1st letter of the series One,Two,Three etc. here u have upto 9 and the rest starts from Ten 5. The Case of the Missing Digit A friend of mine asked me to write down any multidigit number. But, he put a condition, the number should not end with a zero. I put down the number 96452. Then he asked me to add up the five digits and subtract the total from the original number. I did and here is what i got: 96452-26=96426 He then asked me to cross out any one of the five digits and tell him the remaining numbers. I crossed out the 2 and told him the rest of the digits. I neither told him the rest of the digits. I neither told him the original number nor what I had done with it. Yet he told me the exact number I had crossed out. How do you explain it?

Ans: for any no. the no. - sum of its digits is divisible by 9. so if u remove any one of the digits then u can find it out by finding the remainder by 9.

6. You know that the travelling time between trichy and madras is 7 hours. Assume that there is a bus every hour starting from trichy and madras. If you start at 9 a.m how many buses will you encounter in the journey. Ans: 15. Expl: u'll be meeting a bus every 1/2 an hour with one in trichy bus stand and the final one in madras bus stand. Taking the relative velocity into consideration u'll be meeting 15 buses.
