The distributions took place around Mogadishu and today we have gone beyond Mogadishu and we are in Afgoye. Our target today is to reach 5,000 Somali families. This is a donation to the Somali people. STORY: The Afgoye corridor just West of the Somali capital Mogadishu was once known for being the area with the worlds largest concentration of Internally displaced people , during Somalia years of Conflict. In 2011, Somali National Army (SNA) backed by African Union Forces in Somalia (AMISOM), pushed the Islamic extremist group al Shabaab out of the capital and other areas like Afgoye, but many of Afgoyes residents still remain in tented camps and struggle to get food and other basic necessities. As Muslims worldwide observe the month of Ramadan with fasting, often the Internally Displaced People (IDPs) have nothing to break their fast with. For this reason the United Arab Emirates Red Crescent set up a food distribution Centre and donated food in Afgoye. This Ramadan weve distributed over 23,500 Ramadan packages. The packages consist of different food items totaling up to 20 kilograms. Said Abdihamid Suleiman, the Head of UAE aid to Somalia. Mogadishu and the other areas liberated from the Al Qaeda linked extremist now enjoy relative peace and stability with the improved security. The African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops worked together with the Somali National Army counterparts to assistance in planning and coordinating the distribution with manpower and security. For many IDPs like Dahira, this holy month is like no other. Despite her handicap, she showed up to receive the generous relief donation. We havent received any food for a long time. Although the faltering al Qaeda-affiliated group still poses some risk to Somalias increasing stabilisation with its suicide bombings and explosives attacks, relief organizations have not been deterred from delivery of much needed humanitarian aid to the people of Somalia.
