FROM THE EASNAC PRESIDENTS DESK

A Time for Action
by Salcor B. Quines In 2001, under the leadership of Dr. Conrado Miranda IV, who was also the EASNAC President (2000-2002), the PUC/AUP Alumni Association, USA, Inc. (Foundation) was incorporated. It is a separate and legal tax-exempt corporation run and managed by a duly elected board of directors and governed by its own by-laws. One of the reasons why this Foundation was organized is to have contributions and donations, especially from EASNAC members, exempt from Federal income tax under Section 501(c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code of 1986. During its inception, a goal was set to raise a million dollars in five years. Twelve years have past and still we are very far from reaching the goal. According to the Foundation Treasurer, Ramoncito Pugao, as of December 31, 2012, the balance in the account is $188,606.86, which includes the accumulated interests of $14,872.10, earned on all investments. Also, the financial statement shows that most of the funds are restricted. Due to these restrictions and other logistical reasons, the EASNAC Board of Trustees in 2010 recommended to the constituency that one legal tax-exempt alumni organization manage all the activities and projects of the PUC/AUP Alumni of the Eastern North America Chapter. The constituency, in session, approved this recommendation and immediately notified Dr. Irineo Pantangco, Jr., current President of the Foundation. In the three years since that vote, nothing has happened. The Foundations Board of Directions has taken no action. The EASNAC Executive Committee has taken no action. No action has been taken to unify these two organizations. It is time to take action! On August 24, 2013, the EASNAC Executive Committee will be holding their regular business meeting in Beltsville, Maryland. The Foundation Board of Directors will also meet at the same time in the same location. There is no better time to address this situation and implement the will of the general constituency. To that end I am calling a special conference to resolve this issue once and for all. I urge all Board of Directors and all Officers to attend the Business Meeting in August. It is time for the leaders of these two organizations to take responsibility for our

inaction. The resolution of this organizational issue has taken far too long. It is my belief that our failure to resolve this situation has severely hampered the ability of EASNAC to meet its stated goals. It is my hope that this will change.

Loma Linda University to open a medical school PH By Joseph Pimentel, AJ Press

LOS ANGELES -- California-based Loma Linda University on Tuesday, July 9, announced it plans to assist Adventist University of the Philippines with the development or a new medical school. Adventist University is a private Christian university located in Puting Kahoy, Silang, Cavite, Philippines. Loma Linda University is a Seventh-day Adventist university that focuses on health sciences located in Loma Linda, California. Loma Linda University officials said the international partnership is a way for the university to continue to foster higher education around the world. Since its founding, Loma Linda University has sent thousands of physicians, dentists and nurses to provide health care internationally, said Dr. Richard Hart, president of Loma Linda University, in a press release. As the Adventist Church develops international universities, we can expand capacity by assisting with health sciences education for health professionals around

the world, Hart said. The Philippine Commission of Higher Education recently granted Adventist University to open a medical school, which will make it the sixth accredited medical school operated by the Seventh-day Adventist Church. Loma Linda was the first. A team from Loma Linda will be working with the inaugural dean of the new medical school, Dr. Doris A. Mendoza. Mendoza is a former faculty member at the West Visayas State University College of Medicine. Mendoza has outlined a very modern medical education curriculum that will meet more stringent Filipino accreditation criteria, the press release stated. AUP intends to accept its first class of 20 students in June 2014 and will use Adventist Medical Center-Manila as its primary clinical teaching site. In addition, the new faculty at Adventist University will be enrolled in the online Master of Sciences degree program in Health Professions Education an inter-professional graduate program at Loma Linda University designed to prepare clinicians to teach in the classroom. Loma Linda University has a strong, ongoing history with Adventist University of the Philippines. Loma Linda School of Public Health assisted the Filipino university in developing its own College of Health approximately 30 years ago and LLU School of Dentistry also collaborated with AUP to develop in 2005.

Alums Here and There:

Happy 60th Birthday greetings goes to Dr. Placido Roquiz of Avon Park, Florida. His surprise birthday party was celebrated with a bunch of friends, colleagues and family while visiting in Riverside, California. His wife Nida engineered the surprise party. Placido was thinking they were invited to wedding anniversary only to be surprised. A supporter of AUP alumni, Dr. Emil Cornago recently passed away in New Jersey, and will be buried July 24th. Dr. Cornago and his wife Dr. Angie Cornago who predeceased him, were members of the First Filipino SDA Church in New Jersey. They are alumni members of the Manila Central University College of Medicine. It was through their associations with Adventist medical students from Philippine Union College that lead them to the Adventist Church. They have long-observed their decorum and life-style and friendship and when they immigrated to New Jersey, it led them to the Adventist Church where they met more PUC alumni members. Although they are non-PUC alumni members, they were constantly supporting the AUP alumni activities. We will again see Emil when Jesus comes. Members of the New York subchapter are once again involved with health expo and cultural activities, during Filipino gatherings in Ocean City, NJ. Tess and Robert Denosta, Nellie Wong, Ruth Ibanez, led other alumni members during their activity sponsored by the Philippine Consulate of New York. New Jersey subchapter president Sam Magsipoc was also present. The Nations Capital subchapter members based in Maryland and Washington, DC gathered together to meet with AUP President Dr. Frank D. Gayoba, who is visiting the United States for a General Conference meeting, July 23, 2013. The AUP president updated the membership on the progress of the AUP College of Medicine, scheduled to open in June 2014. Subchapter President Lloyd Yutuc, and Israel Castro led the other alumni members to meet with the president. The president will speak at the Central Filipino Church this Saturday, July 27th. Ronnie and Arleen Dato has two children attending the Adventist University of the Philippines. Daughter Rachel is attending the College of Dentistry while son Jason is taking nursing. Another alumna Fe Bustamante Salazar, has son Michael attending AUP too. They are members of the New Jersey subchapter.

agenda but just to bond together. But knowing how active their subchapter in EASNAC wants to be, they couldnt help if they talk about their scholarship program and how they want to run it. They talk about other activities, plans for the future, increasing their members participation in the annual Philippine Independence Day Parade for next year was what occupied their discussions. The coming health expo in Ocean City, New Jersey was also a topic since the New York subchapter was inviting the New Jersey group to have a joint activity giving a cultural exhibition and participate in a health expo sponsored by the New York Consulate of the Philippines. Food was plentiful and the sultry day picnic was relaxing and enjoyable.
