The Riverside Run gave all who attended just what they were looking for. Everyone enjoyed beautiful weather, exceptional meals, gorgeous scenery and three days of the best roads in the country. To see more Riverside Run photos, log on to the Oregon Trail Chapter Facebook page. Check it out. Thursday, July 25th Shakedown Ride Thursdays check ride took the riders on a short loop around the valley to make sure everything was ready for Fridays ride to the beach.
After Thursdays shakedown ride, members returned to the River Bend Resort to enjoy good company, wonderful facilities, Norlenes cooking and cold beverages. Friday, July 26th Florence Loop Fridays ride took the group on a sightseeing tour west through the Coast Range, mill towns, and empty roads along picturesque rivers and streams.
Oregon Trail Chapter August 2013 Our first stop was Alsea Falls. A day use area for picnics, rest stops and hiking in the mountain foothills. We stopped for gas in the small coastal community of Waldport. After everyone filled their tanks, we saddled up and headed south to lunch at the Beachcomber Pub in Florence.
It was nice to get into the forest out of the sun for a cool down next to the stream. We were able to refill our water bottles with cool, fresh water from the faucet provided.
The Beachcomber serves a full menu and a wide variety of local beverages. The food, beverages and service were excellent. The Beachcomber Pub is an outstanding stop for any meal in old town Florence.
Alsea Falls recreation site is nestled along the South Fork Alsea River and the South Fork Alsea River National Back Country Byway between the small communities of Alsea and Alpine.
Alsea Falls
Oregon Trail Chapter August 2013 Pete Peterson, a longtime OTC member, arrived ahead of us to secure parking. We lined the street out front while filling the banquet room inside. In addition to securing our parking and eating spaces, Pete picked up the entire tab. Thank you Pete for the unexpected support. As the doors were open, many in the group went inside to explore the remains. It proved to be quite interesting as some items remained on the shelves from when it was open for business. The old store is a museum to Alsea history.
Alsea General Mercantile from long ago. Pete made certain everyone enjoyed their time in Florence.
After lunch, we followed a wandering track through little used back roads to the River Bend Resort for dinner. Norlene had prepared lasagna, several salads and a wonderful dessert for us. Saturday, July 27 th Marys Peak Loop Saturdays ride took the group northwest to ascend Marys Peak. On the way we covered several miles of deserted back roads, road along several small streams and trekked across littleused side roads. The route included dozens of spectacular views. The group stopped for a break in Alsea OR.
After resting up in Alsea, the group rode on to Marys Peak. Marys Peak is a mountain in the Coast Range just southwest of Philomath. It is the highest peak in the Coast Range and ranks eleventh in the state for prominence. On a clear day at the top of the peak, facing east, northeast, and southeast, one can see the cities and suburbs of the Willamette Valley, the volcanos Mt. Rainer, Mt. Adams and Mt. St. Helens in Washington, as well as Mt. Hood, Mt. Jefferson and the Three Sisters in Oregon. To the west, the Pacific Ocean is visible on clear days. Tom led us up the road to the summit that winds up the mountain to the visitor center. Shown below are a few members stretching their legs after several miles of nonstop twisties. The view from Marys Peak on a clear day is breathtaking.
The building in the following photo is located directly across from the current General Store in Alsea.
Oregon Trail Chapter August 2013 As you can see, the weather cooperated for us that day resulting in spectacular views in every direction. The photo below is looking east across the Willamette Valley towards the Cascade Mountains and Mt. Hood.
If you look closely you can see Mt. Hood in the distance.
After a short time enjoying the view, it was time to start back. A long decent off the mountain provided another opportunity to wear down the outside edges of our tires. Once back at the River Bend Resort, riders prepared for the awards banquet. Saturdays menu was BBQ Brisket, Pulled Pork along with the usual sides of beans, watermelon and salads. Awards Awards were handed out after most had finished their meal. Winners chose from a selection of glassware from the Club Store. Winners this year were: John Stanley: Furthest Ridden est 200 miles John Crawford: Furthest Hauled 406 miles Pat & Carol Smith: Oldest in Attendance
Pat Smith accepts his and Carols award for Oldest in Attendance.
Following the awards ceremony, a door prize raffle netted the lucky winners some great motorcycle-related products. Volunteers made the Riverside Run possible: Tom Krise Road Captain Pat Smith Chase Vehicle Norlene Wolbert Thursday & Friday Dinner Shannon Kelley Site/Banquet/Beverages Carol Smith Coffee / Snacks Gene Walker Prizes Think about adding your name to the volunteer list for 2014. The more that lend a hand, the easier it is for each of us. Active participation in club organization and planning meetings is what make our Road Runs the envy of Chapters everywhere. I mean, weve got Oregon to ride in.
Oregon Trail Chapter August 2013 Wed also like to thank our sponsors who contributed merchandise to our door prize raffle. Salem Harley-Davidson Cycle Country, Jim Smith Salem Honda/BMW Bills Motorcycles Plus To sum it up, members and guests rode through some of the most beautiful country on Earth. Along the way we learned a lot more about antique motorcycles and our fellow club members. Its at these rides where we all have the chance to reaffirm the common interest we share. If you werent there this year, dont miss next year.
