9th Annual Don Gordon Memorial Golf Tournament August 26, 2013 Polo Golf and Country Club

Team Red Cross App Disaster Team Meetings Blood Drive Calendar

The Northeast Georgia Chapters Annual Don Gordon Memorial Golf Tournament is quickly approaching. The golf tournament is the Chapters only fund raising event each year, and we need your help to make this event a success! As many of you know, and some may not, the American Red Cross does not receive any funding from the government. We are wholly dependent on the generosity of our donors. Each chapter is responsible for raising the funds through financial donations to support the mission of the Red Cross, whether it is responding to disasters, collecting lifesaving blood, teaching skills that can save a life, or assisting our military members and their families. How can you help make our golf tournament a success? There are many ways to get involved. Do you know any golfers that would be interested in playing a round of golf to support the Red Cross and our chapter? Do you know any businesses that would be willing to support the tournament through sponsorships, or a donation of a gift to use as a prize or for the silent auction? Your skills would be most greatly appreciated in helping to fill all the player spots and sponsorship opportunities

Introducing. The Red Cross Business Council

The Northeast Georgia Chapter is pleased to introduce The Red Cross Business Council as a new opportunity for businesses to network with each other while engaging with their local Red Cross through education and broader awareness of the Red Cross mission. Businesses can become a member in Forsyth or Hall counties by supporting the Red Cross with a tax-deductible contribution at one of five membership levels. Additionally, businesses will have various opportunities to learn more about the Red Cross through our Four Pillars of Partnership while promoting their businesses at one of our quarterly meetings. For additional information on Business Council membership requirements and company benefits, please contact Daniel Holden, Development Officer at 404 -692-2304 or via email at daniel.holden@redcross.org.

Red Cross of Honduras

During an annual mission trip to Choluteca Honduras, Northeast Georgia Chapter Executive Director, Joni Smith, had an opportunity to visit the local Red Cross. They were friendly and welcoming, and it was exciting to visit a Red Cross office in a different country. Next year when I return, I hope to spend more time with them, with an interpreter, so we can share Red Cross stories stated Ms. Smith.

Summer Safety Tips:

Never leave children or pets in the car. Stay hydrated, avoid alcohol or caffeine. Avoid extreme temperature changes. Wear loosing fitting, lightweight, light colored clothing. Avoid strenuous exercise during the hottest part of the day. Check on family, friends and neighbors who do not have air conditioning, and outdoor pets. Protect eyes with sunglasses that absorb 100% of UV sunlight. Wear sunscreen with SPF of at least 15. Know the signs of heat stroke: hot, red skin; changes in consciousness; rapid weak pulse; rapid shallow breathing. If you suspect a person is suffering from heat stroke call 911, move the person to a cooler location, cool the body by applying cool, wet cloth or towel to the skin, or misting with water and fanning. Watch for signs of breathing problems, and make sure the airway is clear. Keep the person lying down.

American Red Cross Launches App to Recruit Volunteers

The American Red Cross has launched the Team Red Cross App, which allows people to sign up to help, get an overview on basic tasks and receive notifications about Red Cross disaster volunteer opportunities in their community. When people see an emergency happening in their community, they often want to help but may not know how, said Joni Smith, Executive Director of Northeast Georgia Chapter. The Team Red Cross App provides an easy and quick way for people to sign up to help the Red Cross and support their community. Once users download the app and create an account, they can learn about different jobs, such as working in a warehouse, handing out supplies, or assisting with feeding. When the Red Cross has a need for volunteers, the Team Red Cross App will notify users based on their location. Potential volunteers can instantly accept or decline the volunteer opportunity. The Red Cross is encouraging the public to download the app before a disaster strikes in Northeast Georgia so volunteers can help immediately. The app is free and designed for iPhone and Android smart phones and tablets.
