Introduction Area and production Importance of bengal gram Statement of the problem Specific objectives of the study Scope of the study Methodology Location of the study Sampling procedure Other related aspects studied Results and discussion Overall adoption level of the Bengal gram growers Constraints faced by Bengal gram growers Suggestion of Bengal gram growers Summary, conclusion and implication

EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Bengal gram occupies 61.65 per cent area in India as compared with total Bengal gram area in world. Indias total Bengal gram production is 5.32 million tons from 6.10 million hectare area. To find out the market scope of pod resistant variety in market and adoption behaviour of the farmer the present study was planned and conducted. Looking to this fact, the present study was undertaken on farmer and distributor of Bengal gram of six potential chickpea growing dist. Of Maharashtra .objectives to study are to find out the market potential of chickpea in Maharashtra and scope of this new pod borer resistant in market and to assess its profitability for grower, distributor and organisation and then to ascertain the level of adoption of this new cultivar. India ranks 1 in the total production of pulses in the world. But in case of Productivity India ranks 112. This shows that India is far behind as compared to World productivity. It also indicates the potential in increasing the productivity. However, the major pulse crops grown in Maharashtra are Bengal gram, red Gram, black gram, etc. Among these pulse crops Bengal gram is the most Important crop in rabi season. The Bengal gram ( cicer arietinum ) also known as gram, chickpea, is one of the Most important pulse crop of Maharashtra especially in rabi season.

AREA AND PRODUCTION: In Bengal gram production is 69.13 per cent. Maharashtra ranks 4 in area and Production in the country. But in respect of productivity Maharashtra ranks far behind than other states. In productivity Andhra Pradesh ranks 1 (i.e.1274 kg/ha).The total area under Bengal gram in Maharashtra is 1423000 ha. And it is 12.40 Per cent of total Bengal gram area in India. Area in "00" ha, Production in "00" Tonnes, Productivity in Kg /ha.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY Bengal gram is the most important pulse crop in rabi season. So, we decided to conduct a survey for assessing the scope of new pod borer resistant cultivar in market because pod borer is the main problem for reduced yield ,this cultivar can proved to be very beneficial for grower to increase their yield and reduce cost of cultivation. To identify the potential market for chickpea in Maharashtra To find the scope of development of new variety of chickpea To identify major supplier for chickpea seeds in market Major bottlenecks in existing chickpea varieties and production constraints of chickpea Investment is worth for development of new and improved cultivar of chickpea or not?

METHODOLOGY The methodology indicated where and how the study is conducted and presented in this chapter. The chapter includes Information on Location of the Study This study was conducted in five potential dist. of Maharashtra. Namely, Nagpur, Aurangabaad, Jalgaon, Nasik, Ahmadnagar, pune Collection of Data The data was collected by personal interview method. The importance and Objectives of the study were clearly explained to all the Bengal gram growers before interviewing. Thus, with the help of the specially structured questionnaire data is collected Sources of Data PRIMARY DATA:-Farmers through pre-designed questionnaire and farmer interview ,Distributor and retailer through pre-designed questionnaire and interview ,KVK . SECONDARY DATA:-Deptt. of agriculture ,KVKS ,Last year sales of dealer and distributors Size Of Land Holding The size of land holding here refers to the total land possessed by every Individual bengal gram grower. In the present study the size of land holding was Measured in terms of acres of land possessed by the respondents. On avg. land available with farmer is 10-15 acre. CONSTRAINTS It was ascertained by asking open-end questions to the respondent farmers regarding the different factors, which were responsible for Non-adoption of, recommended Bengal gram cultivation practices. The responses About these aspects were recorded and percentages were worked out in order to Draw conclusions about market scope of our new pod borer resistant cultivar. SUGGESTIONS Suggestions were secured from the bengal gram growers to overcome the Problems faced by them in respects of production, management and marketing of Bengal gram. On the basis of their suggestions the frequencies were calculated And percentages were worked out. STATISTICAL METHODS USED In the present study the following statistical methods were used for analysing the Data and interpretation of the results. Percentage distribution, Mean, Standard deviation.

RESULTS AND DISCUSSION This chapter deals with the presentation, analysis and interpretation of data with View to draw meaningful conclusions regarding market scope of pod resistant cultivar and market potential of Maharashtra for chickpea. Results 1 primary tillage 2 improved varieties 3 Seed rate 4 Time of sowing 5 inorganic fertilizers 6 Pod borer 7 Avg. yield 8 Avg.area for chickpea 9 Avg.cost of cultivation 10 Avg. yield loss due to pod borer 11 Avg. expected price rise /kg of new cultivar 12 expected avg. adoption of new cultivar in 1st year Avg. Values Compiled One ploughing , 2-3 harrowing Phule g-12 ,Vijay ,Vishal , Virat ,Digvijay 20-21 kg/acre Time of sowing (15 Oct. To 15 Nov.) 1-2 bag/acre Malathion, endosuphan sprays( 1-2 spray) 6-7 q/acre 4-5 acre 5850 Rs./acre (for kabuli) ,3806 Rs./acre for desi 64% 39 rupees /kg 35%

Hence few points of concern are Expected overall adoption level of Bengal gram growers if cultivar perform good ( about 35%) Practice wise adoption of Bengal gram growers (30% use previous year seeds) constraints faced by the Bengal gram growers

CONSTRAINTS FACED BY BENGAL GRAM GROWERS The major hurdle in higher productivity of Bengal gram as perceived by the Farmer was attack of pod borer. The respondents aspired that researches in Cotton i.e. Bt cotton, on the some line bt. Bengal gram should be developed (90 per cent).

SUMMARY, CONCLUSION AND IMPLICATION The finding of the study are summarized as below Mostly farmer use new seed for chickpea production Mahabheej hold the major share for chickpea seed distribution Distributor and retailer get around 10-20 Rs margin per Kg of chickpea Pod borer and root rot along with wilt are major constraints for chickpea production Pod borer is controlled by spraying chloro spray Two to three irrigation are essential for better chickpea yield Govt. subsidy is major limiting factor for private player to come into chickpea business Seed replacement will increase with the arrival of pod borer resistent cultivar in market 4. The highly perceived constrains in adoption of recommended cultivation Practices of bengal gram, which were faced by the farmers were high cost of Seed (100.00 per cent), non-availability of improved seed (91.07 per cent), High cost of fertilizers (87.50 per cent), labour problem (91.96 per cent), Resistance of pod borer (100.00 per cent), high cost of pesticide (82.14 per Cent) CONCLUSION Majority of the respondents had land holding between 10 to 15 acre. Majority of the farmer were found in medium adoption level category. Major constraints faced by Bengal gram growers were high cost of seed increasing resistance of pod borer. Labour problem, non-availability of improved seed. SUGGESTION MADE BY RESPONDENTS Timely availability of improved seed Developing bt gram in line with Bt cotton. Availability of pod borer resistant cultivar
