Explore the homefront and soldiers' camps, with so many activities we needed a month+ to pack them in. August 1-September 2, 10 am-5 pm.
Caldwell Hall: Mini-workshopMake a pinkeep. Small supply fee required. German Area: Help roll bandages for battlefield surgeons at the Schulz farm. Crossroads Village: Make a thaumatrope, a Civil War-era toy at Harmony Town Hall. Norwegian Area: Take in a history lesson at the Raspberry Schoolhouse. Caldwell Hall: Mini-workshopMake a cockade to decorate your lapel. Small supply fee required. German Area: At the Schulz farm, mix up cookies to send to soldiers on the front. Crossroads Village: Write a message using Morse code at Harmony Town Hall. Norwegian Area: Write a letter to a soldier using pen and ink at Raspberry Schoolhouse. Caldwell Hall: Mini-workshopMake a housewife. Small supply fee required. German Area: Help roll bandages for battlefield surgeons at the Schulz farm. Crossroads Village: Sew together pieces for a quilt at the Sanford home. Norwegian Area: Help with the camp cooking at the open fire at Fossebrekke farm. Crossroads Village: Make a map to take home at Harmony Town Hall. Norwegian Area: Card wool to fill wound cushions at the Kvaale farm. Caldwell Hall: Mini-workshopCreate your own 1860s needle book. Small supply fee required. German Area: At the Schulz farm, learn about bloodletting and folk medicine in the 1860s. Crossroads Village: At the Sanford house, fill relief bags to send to Civil War soldiers. Norwegian Area: Help with the camp cooking at the open fire at Fossebrekke farm.

ThursdaySunday, August 1-4 Mourning the Civil War Dead Catch our Vintage Base Ball game on Saturday, August 3 at 1:30 pm SaturdaySunday, August 10-11 Secrets of the Civil War Caldwell Farmers Club Hall: Make a tussie mussie, a small flower bouquet used to keep unpleasant smells away. Crossroads Village: Take part in mourning rituals at the Sanford home. African-American Area: Stop at the United Brethren Church to decorate the Civil War soldiers graves. Norwegian Area: Help with our camp cooking at the Fossebrekke house. PLUS! First Sunday of the Month Garden Stroll with Marcia Carmichael, historical gardener and author of Putting Down Roots @ 1:30 pm August 4 in the Sanford garden. Marcia will be available to sign books afterwards. Caldwell Farmers Club Hall at 1 pm: Hear Caroline Quarlls talk about escaping slavery. Presented in cooperation with the Kenosha Civil War Museum. Crossroads Village: Decipher Morse code messages at Harmony Town Hall. Norwegian Area: Read letters to soldiers at the Kvaale farm. PLUS! John Zimm, editor of This Wicked Rebellion: Wisconsin Civil War Soldiers Write Home will present on his book on Saturday, August 10 at 2 pm and sign books afterwards from 3-5 pm. Crossroads Village: Concerts at 1:30, 2:30 and 3:30 in the Village Grove by the Regimental Volunteer Band of Wisconsin. Norwegian Area: Stop in at Raspberry Schoolhouse to sing patriotic songs from the 19th century. African-American Area: Hear the organ at the UB Church and join in singing patriotic hymns. Throughout the siteGone for a Soldier: This is your chance to learn firsthand what a soldiers life was like. Enlist in the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry and explore life as a member of the Iron Brigade, the famous Midwestern soldiers who wore Hardee Hats and made their mark in battles like Second Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. Experience camp life, take part in drills, and see rifle firing and artillery demonstrations. Caldwell Farmers Club Hall at 2 pm: Hear Cordelia Harvey talk about her work with the Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. Presented in cooperation with the Kenosha Civil War Museum. Crossroads Village: Help the Soldiers Aid Society pack a box for a Civil War soldier at the Sanford home. Crossroads Village: Bring an item for a modern day soldier to help us pack our own box for Wisconsin soldiers overseas. Norwegian Area: At the Kvaale farm learn and try basic knitting, a skill women used to fill soldier boxes with practical items. German Area: Visit Schulz to help make kuchen for packing in a soldiers box during the Civil War.
