ITH all the hype and anticipation he got from the De La Salle community during his rookie year in 2011, Arnold Van Opstal learned that living up to expectations was indeed a tall order. Taller than his 6-foot-9 frame can handle.
His 6.4ppg, 2.9rpg averages failed to impress fans who set high hopes on their Fil-Dutch/German prized rookie. And to make things harder for the then 18-yearold freshman, the Green Archers missed the Final Four bus. His sophomore year was far from impressive, as his scoring dipped to 4.9ppg, despite posting better at the boards with 5.2rpg. I guess Ive finally come to realize my strength in the post, said the third year International Studies major who upped his scoring and rebounding to 11ppg and 6rpg, respectively. My teammates have also learned to take advantage of my size and speed against some of my opponents. Arnold, or AVO to his fans, also credits his improved game inside game to former PBA superstar Jun Limpot, himself a former Green Archer who led his squad to three titles in the early 90s. I just worked and improved on my weaknesses from last season. Its more on the confidence side and I can say it is higher now than it was two years ago, he added. Despite having a new coach in Juno Sauler who was a last minute replacement right before the start of the season, Van Opstal said he and his teammates have adjusted smoothly. Ive been adjusting pretty well. It wasnt much of a change so it was pretty easy. Van Opstal said the Green Archers has tremendous respect for Sauler. We all respect him (Sauler) tremendously and we just follow whatever he wants. Hes an easy going coach, said Van Opstal. And with the influx of foreign big men, he is forced to beef up further for the intense physical play in the paint. I consider Charles Mammie (of the UE

Red Warriors) as the toughest one to guard. He just moves around a lot and hes pretty strong. Hes a beast off the boards. On the lighter side, fans have been wondering if his attention-grabbing basketball shoes have anything to do with his improvement. It was really my choice to wear pink, referring to his pair of Nike Kobe Air 8 System which celebrates breast cancer awareness. My girlfriend helped out with the colors and we decided to put some green on it as well. Regardless if the shoes are helping him or not, there is no doubt AVO is focused on boosting the Green and Whites chances of returning to the promised land.

Jeric Teng says fighting hearts will save Tigers R

OARING to help his Alma Mater get back to its winning ways, team captain Jeric Teng saw his return to the UST squad cut short after he had spasm in his right hamstring midway in the second quarter in their game against the NU Bulldogs last August 24.

IT is never too late to learn. Most boys knew how to play basketball approximately at the age of seven or eight. Some parents, however, are too persistent to mould their sons in becoming future athletes and so, they enrolled their boys to the best basketball camp in town. Through the years, these kids learn all the skills they need, keeping their fingers crossed that someday, they would be in a basketball court shooting hoops for the pride of their school. But College of Saint Benilde Blazer Paulo Taha has a different story to tell. He wasnt one of those boys who grew up with a ball in their hands. The worse, he wasnt exposed to this world. He was a complete stranger. Hindi talaga ako mahilig sa basketball at hindi rin ako naglalaro, said the 21-year old Taha. Despite his little exposure, that did not hinder the sport to give him a chance. He was handpicked and chosen by basketball itself. Little did he know that he was born with a natural talent. Fourth year high school lang ako nagstart maglaro [ng basketball], shared the Iloilo-native Taha shyly. Volleyball player talaga ako since first to third year pero nung na-try ko magalro ng basketball, sobrang nagustuhan ko siya agad. Never mind the fact that he has no basketball background at all. Never mind that he was a veteran spiker. Whats important for Paulo is where he is now, the things hes learned and the family he has made, all because of the sport. True enough, he is a living proof that it is never too late to learn something. All it takes is heart, a positive attitude and the right mindset. How was it possible? I worked on my work ethics and will na matuto. For sure, it wasnt easy. This season in the NCAA, the Blazers had there hearts broken by too many nailbitting matches in the first round. Its like a dry spell that they cant break and they even brought that

curse with them in their first second round game against UPHSD Altas. Masakit, he shared. Pero tapos na yun we cant do anything about it. Time to move on and improve more in our upcoming games. Even with the series of unfortunate events, he is hopeful that the future still looks bright for them. According to veteran Taha, the key is to adapt to the new system that they have and be more disciplined. Kaya namin to. Nasa adjustment period pa din kasi kami pero para sa akin, mas kailangan na,in ang sistema na meron si Coach Gaby, he added. Paulo has two more years with the Blazers and his battle isnt over yet. E came a thousand miles away from the Philippines just to play basketball, and from being an unknown cager, he is now one of the UAAPs stars and the go-to-guy of the Adamson University Soaring Falcons.
For Jericho Cruz, who once donned the colors of the Rizal Technological University Blue Thunder before transferring to the Falcons lair, the UAAP changed his life. The UAAP changed my life kasi dati parang di ako pinapansin ng mga ibang coaches, said the 3rd year BSBA Marketing Management student and a former UFC regular. Nasa RTU pa lang ako parang gusto ko ng maglaro sa D-League. Ngayong nasa UAAP na ako, parang nagkapangalan ako kahit konti lang, ang daming nagpapa-pictures pero dati hindi naman ganun, he added. Despite the attention he is getting, Cruz keeps his feet on the ground and just overwhelmed while promising to be a better player. Overwhelming, pero dahil doon lalo akong nagwo-work hard and nagpu-pursige, quipped the 6-foot-1 prolific wingman, who is averaging 15.9ppg, 4.6rpg, 3.4aspg and 1.2spg in a season full of promise for Adamson but is now turning into a season in tatters. The sophomore Cruz was born in Pasig City but raised in Saipan for almost all of his life but returned to this basketballcrazy country where Adamson head coach Leo Austria spotted him when the Falcons played the Blue Thunder in the UniGames in Dumaguete City, Negros Oriental. JONATHAN Greys story would have been entirely different today if not for that chance he took inside the school gymnasium in Taft Avenue a few years back. The 6-2 Grey, College of Saint Benilde Blazers wily swingman is not the typical athlete who tried out his luck for a spot on the varsity team or the one who is heavily-recruited from the province. Grey was just an ordinary student of Benilde until he had the chance to play with CSBs players in the NCAA, eventually, leaving them in awe with his quickness and ability to break down the opponents defense. Estudyante lang ako ng Benilde, naglalaro lang ako sa school, intrams, parang ganun tapos nakalaban ko yung mga players ng team dati like sila William Johnston and Anton Sevilla, said the Bian, Laguna native. Tapos ayun, sabi nila mag-try-out daw ako and nagtry-out ako, pero nung first year ako hindi ako nag-try-out, nung 2nd year ako nag-try out and kinuha nila ako. Sa six (players) na nag-tryout ako lang natira, swerte lang talaga, added the 21year-old Grey, who began playing basketball since he was in Grade 3. Fast forward three years and now Grey is in his 3rd year with the Blazers, where he is one of the dependable players of head coach Gabby Velasco along with skipper Mark Romero and Paolo Taha. St. Benilde, this seasons NCAA host, began their campaign with five straight loses but regained its bearings back and won its last three to tote a 3-5 record and stay in the sixth spot in the team standings. INDING a different angle to the same story. This is the challenge to the courtside reporter for UP Fighting Maroons Bea Fabregas.
I keep it (the reports) positive because I sincerely believe kaya ng team. Kapag pumupunta ako practice at nakikita ko sila, makikita mo na kaya nila eh. Kaya talaga, she says. She adds that there was a shift in her relationship with the team. Last year, most of the players were veterans. They were the ones who did their best to make her feel at welcome. This year, most of the players in the lineup are rookies. She has become the ate to them. They would go out of their way to ask if she needed anything from them. I dont want to play favorites. I love all the rookies, but the one who really approached me was Andre Paras. He was really, really nice. He was the first one to reach out, she says. She adds that she now has the confidence she didnt have last year. The production team would tell her that she knows what shes talking about, she just needs to be confident enough to smile infront of the camera.
